rabcthanks unit193 that worked00:18
Unit193rabc: Glad I could help! Starting the core or the version check?00:19
rabcdont know if core or not tho00:20
rabcrabc@rabc-OptiPlex-GX280:~$ lsb_release -a00:20
rabcNo LSB modules are available.00:20
rabcDistributor ID:Ubuntu00:20
rabcDescription:Ubuntu 11.0400:20
rabcRelease:11.0400:20
rabcCodename:natty00:20
rabcgonna try reboot with iso again and check that its 100% https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation/CheckISO_CD00:22
Unit193If you just installed (NO program changes), you should be able to run dpkg -l |grep lubuntu-desktop00:22
rabcyea thanks but i wanted to reformat to ext4 and reinstall a clean lubuntu due to corrupt dual boot xubuntu00:23
rabcdont know if the iso has reformat option00:23
rabcmaybe the iso is corrupt that why https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation/CheckISO_CD00:24
Unit193You can "Use Entire Disk"00:24
Unit193You're bioterror, you know everything! :P00:24
bioterrorwhat00:25
rabcit just takes me to command promt with iso thought would be gui and refomat option00:25
rabci love the lubuntu ive installed now its the best of all ive tried over the last year and half with machine so gonna stick with it and try and get clean install00:26
Unit193rabc: If you're feeling the initiative, you can do a mini install :)00:27
rabcis that ubuntu minimal iso then lxde?00:28
Unit193!mini00:29
ubot5The Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want (the installer is like the one on the !Alternate CD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD00:29
Unit193Then you would install lubuntu-desktop00:29
rabcthanks unit193 ill check out if theres reformat option with the minimal cd but i love to try everything, loveto learn thanks thank00:31
rabc!Alternate CD00:32
ubot5The Alternate CD is a classic text-mode install CD. It supports a wider range of hardware than the !LiveCD, and can also be used as an upgrade CD. http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/alternative-download#alternate - See also !minimal00:32
Unit193rabc: IIRC, there is no AltCD for Lubuntu 11.0400:34
Unit193rabc: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/GetLubuntu00:34
rabck thanks00:41
rabcah thanks unit123 sounds like the 11.04 32 Bit from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation/MinimalInstall is the one for me but wonder will it give me option for reformat00:46
rabcone way to find out ;)00:48
Unit193Just select "Use Entire Disk" (And Command-line Install while you're at it)00:57
linuxman410have they decided light gm or lxde for lubuntu 11.1001:29
=== rabc is now known as draioch
=== draioch is now known as rabc
PhosphenesDoes lubuntu 11.04 have python2 installed by default?02:57
rabcback again sry i got the minimal iso booted and it went to the end but when final reboot ended up with a blank screen, wondering where i went wrong im now using another pc and trying again im at the [! software selection] bit and wondering what options do i need if any to avoid the black screen at the end02:58
PhosphenesNevermind, it does02:59
rabcthere is options for ubuntu/mythubuntu/kubuntu and edubuntu desktop but none for lubuntu should i just continue or have i used the wrong or corrupt mini.iso03:03
PhosphenesLubuntu isn't listed in mayn things yet because it only recently became an official ubuntu ditribution (May I think).03:04
PhosphenesYou can install ubuntu here and then install the lubuntu desktop through the console afterwards03:05
rabck thanks ive continued it, so if it works this time after reboot and no black screen  i go to terminal and do "sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop"03:07
Unit193rabc: At that black screen, hit CTRL+ALT+F1 and type sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop03:09
PhosphenesMight be CTRL+ALT+F2 instead. That's what it is on my computer. Try both.03:10
Unit193Forgot about that...03:10
rabc\o/ thanks so much unit193 + phosphenes so there is hope for me yet03:10
rabcfinal rebboot done i hit CTRL+ALT+F2 took me to a blue screen (was expecting terminal) should i CTRL ALT DEL and try again03:16
rabci left the mini.iso cd in and its back to the first screen with install command line install etc can i go to command line install and try the sudo command then03:19
rabcor take cd out reboot andCTRL ALT F2 or does it matter03:20
PhosphenesIf its installed take the cd out03:21
rabcat command promt after login so must be ok: which one is best: sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop OR sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends lubuntu-desktop03:24
rabcfrom https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp03:24
rabcthink theres a mistake in that section its confusing to me anyways03:25
Phosphenesuh, I'd just use sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop03:26
rabck thanks phosphenes03:26
PhosphenesOr use the link bioterror gave earlier03:26
Phospheneshttp://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purelxde03:26
PhosphenesAnd remove all the base ubuntu stuff when you're doing it03:26
PhosphenesFirst code on there03:27
rabcu mean the sudo apt-get remove acpi-support acpid adium-theme-ubuntu ,,,,,,,,, command03:27
rabcdoes it matter which one is first03:28
PhosphenesCopy and paste the entire line on that page03:29
Phosphenesinto the console03:29
rabcyea thx but do that after sudo apt get install lubuntu..... or before03:31
PhosphenesIt includes that on the end of the code, so you don't need anything else03:31
PhosphenesAfter that do a sudo apt-get dit-upgrade03:31
Phosphenesdist-upgrade*03:31
rabcthx phosphenes aah so u only need the command link from http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purelxde and no need for sudo apt get install lubuntu03:33
Unit193--no-install-recommends was the correct answer03:34
Unit193sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop --no-install-recommends is the easy way to do it03:34
Phosphenessudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop is on the end of the code from that link. But I'd do whatever Unit193 says because he's probably more experienced than I am03:35
rabcyea thanks unit193 phosphenes ii cant copy the whole command from that http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purelxde link into my other machine03:35
rabcanyways03:35
Unit193If this is a mini install, you shouldn't need it >_>03:36
Phosphenesoh lol03:36
rabcno worries im learning fast here and really grateful for the help03:36
rabcso its sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends lubuntu-desktop03:36
Phosphenesrabc, that should work03:39
PhosphenesActually, other way around sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop --no-install-recommends03:40
rabcshit too late i put in "sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends lubuntu-desktop" copyied it exactly from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp03:42
Unit193That's fine then03:42
rabcpheew03:42
Unit193Both will work03:43
rabcu guys/gals have some patience dealing with noobs like me ive been at this for about the last 15 hours03:44
MK``haha it doesn't matter03:45
MK``parameter order like that is fine03:46
rabck thx everything is done but done back at command promt should i reboot or is there another command to use04:06
diyttoHai04:06
diyttoIm playing a video in vlc but randomly my processor usage jumps up to max and I can't do anything04:07
rabc"every is done but now back at command"04:07
diyttoShould I use a different player?04:08
rabcgonna try a reboot04:08
Unit193rabc: Yep, that's what you do!04:09
rabcthanks god already done it04:09
PhosphenesFor future reference, you can do ctrl alt f7 to get out of the console04:10
Unit193diytto: Watch a video and have (h)top running to make sure it's VLC that spikes04:10
rabcthx04:10
diyttoUnit193: Can i get it from synaptic?04:10
diyttoI cant do anything atm04:10
diyttoIts frozen completely04:11
diytto._.04:11
Unit193diytto: htop you can, top is already installed (They are terminal programs)04:11
diyttoOh ok04:11
diyttoHold on04:11
diytto:p04:11
diyttoUnit193: Will it keep a log?04:12
Unit193Nope04:12
diyttoWell ok04:12
diyttoIll try it04:12
rabc\o/ yea im in lubunu thx soooo much unit123 phosphenes04:14
PhosphenesNo problem, I just started with it recently too so I know your pain.04:15
rabcfor all the help ill make a donation when i get a few pounds together any link to donate pls04:15
Unit193rabc: I actually don't know where to point you on that one...04:17
PhosphenesI don't think lubuntu specifically takes donations, but you could donate to ubuntu04:18
Phospheneshttp://www.ubuntu.com/community/get-involved/donate04:18
PhosphenesOr linux04:18
Phospheneshttp://www.linuxfund.org/donate/04:18
diyttoLinux :)04:18
Unit193I'm sure LXDE has one too04:18
diyttoIs there a way for lubuntu to use my swap partition?04:19
diyttoI have 2GB allocated for that04:19
PhosphenesWrong link for the linux donation, I think this ones right04:19
Phospheneshttp://www.linuxfoundation.org/participate/linux-donate04:19
rabcyea thanks will do ill will prob hang around and maybe learn some things from time to time here also thanks again bye o/04:19
diyttoI guess the better question is how can i get lubuntu to use my swap partition :p04:21
diyttoUnit193, Phosphenes ^ :s04:22
PhosphenesSorry, I'm not good with partitioning04:23
diyttoOh04:23
diytto:(04:23
PhosphenesAre you installing from scratch?04:23
diyttoNo04:23
Phosphenesoh04:23
diyttoI partitioned it on install though04:24
diyttoI already have the partition04:24
PhosphenesAs long as there is a swap partition it should use it04:24
Unit193diytto: Terminal command sudo blkid04:24
diyttoUnit193: What now?04:25
Unit193Open a terminal and type    sudo blkid    to see if it will "see" the swap04:26
diyttoIt does04:26
diyttoUnit193: It sees it. Does that mean it is using it?04:28
jmarsdendiytto: What does swapon -s     say >04:28
diyttojmarsden: /dev/sda2 partition 2445308 0 -104:29
jmarsdenThen yes, it is using it.04:29
diyttoOkay cool :)04:29
diyttoUnit193: Oh sure, now that i run htop it works04:33
diytto:/04:33
Unit193I fixed your problem :D04:34
diyttoLol04:35
diyttoMaybe04:35
diyttoIt might have been overheating actually04:35
diyttoThats my first bet04:35
wildbathmm, anyone installed lxde / lubuntu have idea why "ALT+f2 or W+R " work only once ?08:59
Neosanosource_lxrandr.py12:41

Neosanoa typo, right?12:41
Neosanonext line has it too12:42
phillw-virtualI would assume so!12:45
Neosano^^12:45
Neosanoso where should I report it?12:47
phillw-virtualubuntu-bug lxrandr should bring up the reporting system12:49
Neosanobah, my brain brain is fucked enough with trying to set up dual monitors13:05
phillwit's okay - I'll report it for you if you want.13:06
NeosanoI did it already13:07

phillwNeosano: I've just confimed it. A quick fix for one of the team (I hope!)13:08
Neosano:)13:08
Neosanostill this typo doesn't affect me (probably)13:09
Neosanowhat should I do to make dual monitors work13:10
NeosanoI want them to be configured when I login13:10
phillwNeosano: while they look into it, you can try 'old' way we used in 10.10 to see if that will get you running... http://forum.phillw.net/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=8413:11
Neosanophillw, says something about xorg.conf file, huh?13:16
NeosanoI'm pretty sure it dissapeared few versions ago13:16
bioterrorNeosano, buy me another ViewSonic VP2030b and I'll investigate this dual screen ;)13:19

phillwyeah13:26
Neosanoscreens*13:26
Neosanobecause lxrandr tries to setup them the way it wants, I guess13:27
phillw1st time i've seen lxandr bug repoted :(13:29
Neosano... using dual monitors for a year, I want to bash lxrandr with hammer!!!13:29
Neosanoa simple "left-of" button in lxrandr can be so useful13:30
Neosanoor even a simple edit box for custom commands :|13:31
phillwi don't have dual monior either, those posts were from the people who got it working in 10.10 :)13:33
Neosanowell, maybe it's bad to throw such things directly here, but13:34
Neosano#!/bin/bash13:34
Neosanosleep 213:34
Neosanoxrandr --output VGA-0 --off13:34

Ahmuckyou can power off when "system is halted"14:22
amadeothis panelpc is a piece of shit and the kernel support is shotty at best14:22

jo-erlenddoes Lubuntu come with Network-manager installed by default?14:51
amadeoi believe it comes with nm-manager14:52
amadeo*network manager14:53
silverarrowjo-erlend, it does have a network manager, much like ubuntu14:53
silverarrowI'm in lubuntu now14:54
jo-erlendsilverarrow, "a network manager"? Let me rephrase. Does it include nm-connection-editor?14:54
silverarrowhmm14:54
silverarrowI cannot figure out where to check for it14:58
silverarrowperhaps it doesn't then14:58
silverarrowis it a problem to install manually?14:58
jo-erlendsilverarrow, do you know how to open a terminal?14:59
silverarrowyes14:59
silverarrowbut I am crap with commands14:59
silverarrowI fuzz lol15:00
jo-erlendsilverarrow, can you open a terminal and type nm-connection-editor and see if you get a dialog?15:00
silverarrow** (nm-connection-editor:1560): WARNING **: nm_connection_list_new: failed to load VPN plugins: Couldn't read VPN .name files directory /etc/NetworkManager/VPN.15:01
silverarrowand a network applicatoin popped up15:01
jo-erlendsilverarrow, did you get a dialog on your screen? A window?15:01
jo-erlendgreat.15:01
silverarrowa bit like this one15:01
silverarrowhttp://www.kiwwito.com/uploads/images/full/652ed52a6a7543ca570d14f40677d79d860ebb6d.png15:01
jo-erlendsilverarrow, right. If you click on the network icon in your panel, do you get a menu such as this? http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Screenshot-2.png15:02
silverarrowyes15:03
jo-erlendgreat. Thank you. :)15:03
silverarrowI don't notice much difference from the one in Ubuntu15:04
silverarrowbut I haven't had Ubuntu in months now15:04
silverarrowI have lubuntu on two laptops, one very old minimal spec model, and one newer,15:06
jo-erlendsilverarrow, the indicators are available for gnome-panel, xfce4-panel, unity-panel and lxpanel at least. That's a very good thing. :)15:07
jo-erlendI didn't know if they were included by default though.15:07
silverarrowthe old one 700MHz cpu, the newer one 2,6 MHz cpu15:07
silverarrowis there an option for easy network manager other than the default?15:08
jo-erlendthere are others, yes.15:13
jo-erlendwicd, for instance. But network-manager is recommendable.15:14
jo-erlendnetwork-manager also notifies other application when network status changes, so that they can act properly. Your email client won't complain about being offline, etc.15:15
jo-erlendis there only one iso for lubuntu?15:28
phillwjo-erlend: nope, there is a wole little familiy of them :)15:32
phillw*whole*15:32
jo-erlendoh, ok. I could only find one download on the website.15:32
phillw!topic15:33
ubot5Please read the channel topic whenever you enter, as it contains important information. To view it at any time after joining, simply type /topic15:33
jo-erlendhmm. Ok. Why is there only one iso available on the website?15:34
phillwjo-erlend: I do not maintain the website :P I help look after the wiki area.15:34
jo-erlendI'm looking forward to testing it. I've just downloaded the iso and creating a vbox guest. :)15:39
phillwi am just updating my 11-10 alpha115:39
jo-erlenda1 is way too early for me. :)15:39
phillwthere is a known gremlin in the a1.15:39
* phillw goes and checks the wiki area to ensure it is noted15:40
jo-erlenddoes lubuntu use zeitgeist?15:40
phillwwe follow the ubuntu ethos.15:40
amadeofigured it out15:40
jo-erlendphillw, what does that mean?15:41
amadeoif anyone was wondering I had to make the kernel output to a logfile only not console15:41
phillwjo-erlend: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_(philosophy)15:42
phillwamadeo: congratulations on getting it done :)15:42
amadeophillw, thanks, its a hack way around it but hey, it works15:43
jo-erlendphillw, hmm... But Lubuntu obviously doesn't use all the software that Ubuntu does.15:43
phillwjo-erlend: no, it does not. The software chosen is low resource usage. However any one can install anything from the main repo if they so wish. (I know some people cannot live without FireFox)15:44
jo-erlendyes, I know that.15:44
jo-erlend was wondering if Lubuntu uses zeitgeist by default.15:45
phillwI have a full LAMP server on mine :D15:45
phillwjo-erlend: from what I can see it is gnome based. I'm not sure just how much of the gnome library it would want to bring in as depedancies.15:47
phillwgive me a couple of minuites, just firing up 11.04 in VB15:48
phillwjo-erlend: it wants to use about 1MB of disk space and dowload 175k - looks pretty lean.15:51

jo-erlendI don't know how much memory it uses though. If it's not too much, then it should be included. It really rocks.15:52
jo-erlendapplications need to be aware of it though.15:52
phillwmemory is a really tight requirement!15:52
jo-erlendyes, I know. On Xfce, there is a plugin to enable gnome-panel applets to be used on xfce4-panel. Is there anything similar for lxpanel?15:55
phillwI'm not familiar with the applets, sorry.16:01
AmberJphillw, there?16:33
phillwAmberJ: present16:33
AmberJphillw, I poked you a couple of days ago about lxde menu unable to find and add some of my apps...16:46
AmberJIT was ktouch at that time...16:46
AmberJbut somehow magically after a few reboots, Ktouch appears in my menu now...16:47
AmberJBut I'll like to have separate entries for all libreoffice programs (writer etc.)...right now it just shows single libreoffice entry16:48
AmberJIn future I may find more such instances so thought that it was worth asking...16:48
phillwI can try putting libreoffice onto my 11-04 for you and see what happens16:56
phillwI've not seen the finished list of apps for 11-10 yet.16:56

Unit193amadeo: 1. Download Theme 2. Extract to ~/.icons 2.1 Create the folder .icons if it does not exist in your home folder. 2.2 It is a hidden folder so hit CTRL+H to view hidden folders. 3. Open up a Terminal and type in   sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme   5. Choose the newly installed theme by entering the right number representing the new theme. 6.
