[17:19] simply putting updates in a cron job [17:20] i usually just update the LTS, and go with it [17:20] or, using cron-apt, o/c ;) [17:20] holstein, was that for me? [17:20] sure :) [17:20] the LTS needs updates now and then? I was thinking something like a weekly cron-job [17:21] sure, but... the user still needs to be educated [17:21] "why do i need to restart?" [17:21] why is my browser saying it needs to restart? [17:21] ^^ that kind of thing [17:21] i usually either just leave the update system the way it is, and wait til they figure out how to use it [17:21] OR, just turn updates off [17:22] Observe that this tool may be a security risk, so you should not set it to do more than necessary. Automatic upgrade of all packages is NOT recommended unless you are in full control of the package repository. [17:22] from cron-apt's man page [17:22] i mean, we're not talking about some *major* security compromise (typically) that an update is needed to patch on a desktop machine [17:22] flash often needs updating [17:22] set up an ssh server on her pc and update it ur self every now and then lol [17:23] kristian-aalborg: *needs* ?? i would argue your sister doesnt *need* flash [17:23] and some app or other... can't remember which... was having trouble at some point [17:23] holstein, you are obviously an only child ;) [17:23] yeah, you can ssh in, or even something like teamviewer [17:23] coalwater, perhaps not too awful an idea [17:24] good 'ol fashioned education is really the way to go [17:24] I'd like to lock myself out of /home/, though [17:24] heres how, and why to update sis [17:24] i mean, thats really the majority of the issue with all OS's [17:24] holstein, yeah... but, I'm thinking I should make it as easy as possible [17:24] users error and neglct [17:25] its not hard to tell her press update whenever the update box pops up [17:25] neglct spling? :P [17:25] kristian-aalborg: sure, but does she drive a car? does someone come put gas in it for her? [17:25] i mean... its general maintainence [17:25] yeah [17:25] I'd just like to sweeten the transition from Win [17:25] and, its *way* easeir in linux with package management and repositories [17:26] having an ssh backdoor might be useful, tbh [17:26] kristian-aalborg: well, its now windows... personally, i think you can turn the updates off, and do them for here every year or so, and be more than secure [17:26] its not* windows [17:27] I was thinking getting an old box, put Lubuntu on it [17:27] for your sis? [17:27] yes [17:27] might be just fine [17:27] also, I'd put some of the Tux-stuff on it for the kids [17:28] personally, i started having a really nice experience in linux when i started giving the best hardware in the house over to it [17:28] and a reasonable media player [17:28] I'm thinkning something like an Optiplex G whatevs - not a piece of (deleted) [17:28] i see that kind of thing in the #ubuntustudio channel all the time "ive got a P2 with 64mb's of ram, and im trying to make a pro audio recording... what gives? linux sux?' [17:29] BUT, you really can breathe new life into older hardware... [17:29] holstein, that would be piece of cake - debian sans X and the proper programs ;) [17:29] kristian-aalborg: im talking about for your sis though [17:30] I put Lubuntu on a 2003 Optiplex with 512 megs of memory recently... it ran very well [17:30] so something in that range [20:56] can i have an external hard drive not mount as root? [20:59] relevant?? http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/allow-normal-user-to-mount-linux-partitions-usb-stickpen-device.html [21:00] AFAIK, if your user has rights to mount things on the system... [21:04] i need to copy my music to my laptop. and the external mounts as root [21:04] i might just chmood them later and change the permissuins [21:04] *permissions [21:07] philipballew: Depends on what filesystem it has. [21:12] If it has a filesystem that supports standard unix permissions, like the ext* filesystems, you need chown(1). [21:14] ... or use autofs as per holstein's suggestion. [21:15] Opened it but forgot to read it at first :/ [21:25] geirha, well im copying it to my laptop. ext4 i believe. maybe 3? sorry. i had to step away as it is lunch time in california [21:35] Right, then you either need to use chown/chmod to give the files and directories you want to copy, the correct permissions [21:35] Or try the autofs solution holstein linked to [21:43] i just copied them to my laptop. whenever they finish im gonna have do something like that to change the entire permissions on my entire /Music foloder [21:44] philipballew: you'll need to do something, thats for sure [21:46] Are you copying the files as root, then? [21:46] no. i am not [21:47] holstein, geirha i beleive this workshttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=628884 [21:48] http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=628884 [21:48] sure.. that changes permissions [21:48] there we go :) [21:49] just not sure if thats necessary [21:49] It depends if you're doing the copy as your user or as root [21:58] im logged in as me now === yofel_ is now known as yofel
