rebeltazI am trying to find a Linux OS that can run on a 400Mhz laptop with 256mb RAM and is able to run Banshee. I tried DSL, but it's repositories were no longer available and I could not get banshee to compile from source. What are the requirements for xbuntu and will it run on the system I need it to run on?02:38
knomerebeltaz, you might be able to pull it off with your system02:39
rebeltazI assume that xubuntu uses less resources than ubuntu? I tried ubuntu, but it was just to slow.02:39
knomeyes, a bit at least02:40
knomeit's really all about the application choices02:40
knomewell, a big part of it is02:40
rebeltazI'll remove as much as possible once it's installed ... can't hurt to try I guess02:40
knomebtw, we're using gmusicbrowser as our default player in xubuntu, have you tried that?02:40
knomethere's also the minimal cd02:41
knome!minimal02:41
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want (the installer is like the one on the !Alternate CD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD02:41
knomewith minimal, you can install those exact packages you want, nothing else02:41
rebeltazI'll take a look at gmusicbrowser right now and the minimal cd sounds perfect!02:41
knomexubuntu is using the shimmer layout in gmb: http://shimmerproject.org/project/gmusicbrowser/02:42
knomebut the layout is actually completely customisable...02:42
rebeltazgmb does random? will it do random playing only the songs that are unheard? will it play songs over a networked drive?02:44
knomeyes, you can set the playmode to random and add whatever filters you like02:45
rebeltazcool.. thanks. I'll try this tonight.02:45
knomeover networked drive shouldn't be a problem either :)02:45
rebeltazi see the download for the alternate.. how do I get the minimal?02:48
rebeltazof 10.04lts02:48
knome32 i suppose? ;)02:49
knomehttp://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/mini.iso <- right here02:49
ochosirebeltaz: about your gmusicbrowser-questions: yes, it does shuffle and various weighted random modes. you can also combine that with a filter to only hear unheard songs. and over a networked drive yes, if it's something you mount normally (e.g. no daap-client)02:49
rebeltazwow what a link!02:50
rebeltazthank you ochosi02:50
ochosirebeltaz: np, if you need help with gmusicbrowser feel free to ping me later (if i'm available)02:50
knomeme too, same if-clause02:51
knome;)02:51
rebeltaz;-D .... thanks guys - off to screw up... I mean fix... a computer.02:51
rebeltazso... I get to Downloading Release Information (I think is what it says) and then that box goes away and it just sits there...03:22
rebeltazI downloaded and ran 10.04 minimum install. I get through the detection of the wireless card, give it the details, give the computer a name and select the mirror. it says that it is downloading "Release Information?" and then that box goes away and that is where it stays. Please help!  ;(03:33
orngjce223<orngjce223> I'm following the notes that someone had to set up their tablet in Ubuntu, but I think XFCE will have better performance for this old thing so:03:40
orngjce223<orngjce223> http://andynaz.altervista.org/immagini/ubuntu_tecnologie_assistive.png03:40
orngjce223<orngjce223> "For this go to System → Preferences → Assistive Technologies and check the option "Windows passwords as normal windows"."03:40
orngjce223<orngjce223> Is there a similar gksudo/gksu preference in xfce?03:40
knomeorngjce223, please do not flood the channel03:40
orngjce223Huh. I remember "flood" being more than four lines03:40
* orngjce223 finds rules again03:40
knomerebeltaz, did you try the main mirror?03:41
orngjce223Sorry03:41
rebeltazactually, I guess it just took a while (like ten minutes!)... while I was waiting it came back up and continued...03:42
knomeorngjce223, what is that setting supposed to do?03:42
knomeorngjce223, there isn't anything about passwrods in the accessibility settings in xfce03:42
orngjce223It's supposed to turn all gksudo and gksu calls into windows that /don't/ grab the entire screen03:42
orngjce223So one can use the onscreen keyboard or similar program to enter the proper password03:43
knomeorngjce223, right, gksudo will not be fullscreen in xubuntu03:43
orngjce223Huh03:46
orngjce223Synaptic grabs the entire screen when you put in the password though I'm not sure what /that/ call is03:47
knomethat's something else03:47
knomehmm03:48
knomeactually03:48
knomeit looks like when running from GUI it DOES go fullscreen03:48
knomei think you can do an alias from 'gksudo' to 'gksudo -g'03:49
knomewith the -g option, it won't go to fullscreen03:49
orngjce223Okay03:51
orngjce223Thanks. I think.03:51
orngjce223I'll probably just stick around in here though, ubuntustudio is probably going to start running on xfce so I should probably be learning more by osmosis03:53
knomefeel free to03:55
knomegot to go to bed now. see you later everybody!04:00
=== foresto is now known as foresto2
forestoHi, all.  I just installed xubuntu natty, and the gdm theme (xubuntu-gdm-theme) has somehow stopped showing up.  The background is black instead of showing xubuntu-greybird.png, and the panel bar is light gray with what must be a default button instead of showing the red/orange button with the power icon on it.  I wonder if someone here can help me figure out why.06:07
forestoJust to make sure I'm sane, I installed it again in a vm, and the gdm theme looks fine there.06:08

jarnosHow do you change panel's theme? Changing window manager style does not have an effect in it.11:28
knomejarnos, no, it's in the gtk theme (settings->appearance)11:28
jarnosknome, I can't set panel in 3D style in xfce 4.8. Windows-buttons seem to be flat no matter what I do.11:39
knomethat might be some murrine issue11:40
jarnosknome, I don't understand. What is murrine?11:43
knomejarnos, murrine is the gtk engine11:43
jarnosknome, at least you can get some panel features visible by changing panel's Alpha towards zero.11:51
knomemm.11:52
jarnosknome, such as Notification area's frame and Window Buttons' handle (if set).11:53
jarnosIs Session Menu logout supposed to save session or does it follow setting of Action Buttons?11:56
