gamerchick02welp. gonna be sticking with the open-source drivers.00:34
rick_h_yay?!00:35
gamerchick02well, considering they don't spike my cpu up to insane amounts, i guess.00:36
gamerchick02though cleaning my fan seemed to help a little bit.00:36
snap-lIs this with Unity?00:42
gamerchick02yeah.00:43
gamerchick02i've had an issue with the binary driver since Natty beta00:43
gamerchick02switched to the OS one, and it works. except for games, but other than torcs, i don't play resource heavy games.00:44
gamerchick02and i can get torcs for windows.00:44
snap-lYOu might wnat to check the vsync setting00:59
snap-lI had to turn it off to get any kind of performance on my machine.00:59
gamerchick02vsync?01:00
gamerchick02i'm running a dual monitor setup01:00
gamerchick02ok01:04
gamerchick02i'll download the new driver and futz with it tomorrow01:04
gamerchick02i'm off for some TV01:04
gamerchick02this is making my head hurt01:04
gamerchick02later!01:04
greg-gformatting a 2 tb harddrive takes a long time!01:06
rick_h_greg-g: hah, I bet01:13
greg-gbut it'll be so nice when I have 2tb in RAID 101:17

jrwrengreg-g: nice 2 - 2TB... I have mind in LVM with some mirror and some nonmirror13:22
snap-lWondering if I should get some more 2TB drives and do the same13:23
snap-lmy only concern is heat buildup13:23

greg-gjrwren: yeah, this enclosure I got has a "SAFE33" and "SAFE50" setting where 33/50% of the space is RAID1 while the rest is not13:35
greg-gsnap-l: yeah, I don't have that worry since I don't use a desktop anymore, this is an enlosure13:36
snap-lgreg-g: Ah, you got an external enclosure13:36
snap-lGood deal13:36
jrwrenO_O interesting.13:36

jrwrendid you look at synology?13:39
jrwrenoh, you attach to this thing with esata? cool.13:39
greg-gnope, didn't see synology. I kind of gave up on the NAS as I just really need an as-needed connection13:40
jrwrenanyone have joe landman's email address? his blog and business website are down.13:51
jrwrenor... can anyone else get to scalableinformatics.com or scalability.org ?13:52

rick_h_scalability.org that is13:53
jrwrenok, my end then.13:54
jrwrenrick_h_: can you help me out with a vim map command?13:55

snap-lgreg-g: Throwing your hat into a @bkuhn conversation. Brave man. :)13:55
rick_h_so guessing they used , as leader?13:56
rick_h_yea, just ,ic in a row will match it and run it13:57
rick_h_builds an if() block it looks like13:58
rick_h_snipmate ftw vs that for sure13:58
rick_h_have to be in command mode for it to work13:58
rick_h_but builds if, and moves cursor back to the () part13:59
jrwrenthat is what I thought, but I can't get it to run in command or insert mode :(14:00
rick_h_well map is only command, runs here for me when I try it out14:00
rick_h_just as comma i c14:01
rick_h_have to hit it in a hurry to get it to fire14:01
jrwrenok, now in 1 vim it does.14:01
jrwrenmaybe...14:01
jrwrenok... i was doing something wrong. thanks.14:01
rick_h_if I have double keys I usually try to use the same key14:01
rick_h_,cc is my close quickfix and ,c to open it etc14:01
rick_h_but yea, snipmate works in insert mode and can do some nice fancy templating like that14:02
rick_h_and you can provide multiple points to enter text in the template14:02
jrwrencool, i'll check out snipmate14:15
gamerchick02Ok. Updated my driver manually from the alpha ppa (I grabbed the driver version I needed from a list). Updated and everything looks decently swell, except for the fact that my standard vga cable now doesn't work. i'm using a HDMI converter... SDHC or something to HDMI. It's a big white port on the back of my monitor.14:45
rick_h_dvi probably14:46
gamerchick02I'm watching top closely to see if xorg runs away with my cpu. right now gwibber is eating it for lunch, but that happens every so often.14:46
gamerchick02thanks, rick_h_14:46
gamerchick02i can't remember what it's called14:46
gamerchick02but everything works swell in windows 7.14:46
gamerchick02gotta hand it to the devs on 7; they made using a second monitor easy peasy. not so much with binary drivers in ubuntu.14:47
jrwrenuse windows7! :)14:47
gamerchick02moral of the story? clean your fan, update your drivers (even if manually) and switch out cables before you have an aneurism.14:48
gamerchick02for games. i can't be a gamerchick without it. :-P14:48
gamerchick02also, i'm still begging for jobs. if i say i can't use windows, they'll look at me like i grew 47 heads in front of them14:48
gamerchick02and promptly skip over my application.14:48
greg-gsnap-l: re @bkhun, I just think limiting blog comments to identi.ca is short sighted and not useful, especially for an important issue like the harmony agreements14:56

gamerchick02why the everloving hell won't the damned binary drivers just FUCKING WORK?!?!?!?!?!17:17
gamerchick02*rage rage rage*17:17
gamerchick02i've got a g105m in this pangolian.17:19
gamerchick02other than xorg eating my cpu after 4 hours, it runs just fine.17:19
gamerchick02I've been having this problem ever since i started running the natty beta. i have to keep reverting to the open-source ones. which are fine, but kind of run like crap.17:21
gamerchick02snap-l what was that setting you were talking about last night?17:23
snap-lvsync17:23
gamerchick02ok17:24
gamerchick0281C? NO FUCKING WAY. this should not be running that hot.17:24
gamerchick02sync to vblank?17:24
gamerchick02 is that it?17:24
gamerchick02i don't have a vsync, snap-l, but i have "sync to vblank"17:26
snap-lYeah, turn that off17:26
snap-lMight help things a bit17:27
snap-lotherwise the GPU waits for the screen to redraw17:27
jrwrenIE9 dev tools you mean?17:27
gamerchick02ok17:27
gamerchick02do i need to do a reboot for that to take effect?17:27
snap-lShouldn't need to17:27
jrwrengamerchick02: wait... its a system76 that is acting weird? call them for support! that is why you buy system76 :)17:28
gamerchick02it's way way way past warranty17:28
jrwrenpan5 ?17:28
gamerchick02and yes, this is a pangolian17:28
gamerchick02yes.17:28
jrwrenthat is waht I have... but I run windows :)17:28
gamerchick02well, i dual boot.17:28
jrwrenyou still might ask in the forums. they could probably tell you if certain nv revisions are better than others.17:29
gamerchick02snap-l, there's also something called "allow flipping" under open gl.17:29
jrwrenlike maybe g105m sucks with nvidia drivers xxxx but is ok with yyyy17:29
gamerchick02i've kind of been talking to myself in a thread.17:29
gamerchick02my computer's totally slowed down to a crawl so getting FF up will be impossible.17:29
snap-lgamerchick02: Not sure what that would do17:30
gamerchick02i updated to the most recent driver off of the alpha ppa and i have better and longer use now than i did before17:30
gamerchick02i'll disable it.17:30
gamerchick02ok, disabled sync to vblank and disallowed flipping.17:31
gamerchick02i'm going to reboot regardless because this speed is impossible to use. and 81C for my gpu? really? shouldn't be getting that hot.17:32

snap-lrick_h_: It's a work machine. I'm not pushing it. ;)17:36
gamerchick02well, 71C is better than 81C, but it's not anywhere near the 61 I was getting before.17:37
gamerchick02my fan doesn't sound like it's about to make my laptop take off. that can only be good.17:38
jrwrenwhy would'nt I run stable?17:38

snap-lhttp://radar.oreilly.com/2011/07/7-reasons-to-use-java.html17:54
snap-lI called out #2 on this list as bullshit17:54
snap-l"@edd Seriously? IDEs do not take the pain of Java away; they mask it like anesthetic. Eventually it wears off, and the pain is still there."17:55
gamerchick02lol, snap-l17:56
gamerchick02and unchecking those bits seems to be helping A LOT with my slowdown woes.17:56
gamerchick02thank you, snap-l. i appreciate it.17:57
snap-l"@edd And the other "reasons" for using Java (Everybody's doing it, and eventually you will too) are cop-outs.Peer-pressure is not a feature"17:58
snap-lgamerchick02: No problem17:58
rick_h_meh, using tools that exist is good if you need them17:58
rick_h_I mean, solr == java, if I want the best fulltext, I'll do java and use solr17:58
gamerchick02peer pressure is not a feature. if i succumbed to peer pressure, i'd probably be smoking right now.17:58
gamerchick02hah.17:58
gamerchick02i've never done anything in java.17:59
gamerchick02to me java is coffee. mmmmmm... coffee17:59
gamerchick02i managed to suffer through one semester of PASCAL which was a total waste of my time.17:59
snap-lrick_h_: That's different. Using Java because it's useful for a task is sane17:59
snap-lIt's like saying that crack is great because other people use crack18:01
rick_h_it's like saying "eventually everyone needs to get rid of some crack, so make sure you know how to use it"18:01
rick_h_thus java18:02
rick_h_eventually you'll want to hadoop, solr, jenkins something18:02
gamerchick02say no to crack.18:02
gamerchick02wow, now that my computer is behaving, i feel more zen18:03
jrwrenjava is dead.18:09
jrwrenadopting java is like adopting cobol.18:09
rick_h_long live the JVM!18:09
jrwrenonly you get oracle suing you if you do something too cool with it.18:10
jrwrenhey... what is wrong with PASCAL??? :)18:10
jrwrentruth about solr and lucene though.18:11
jrwrenand hadoop and jenkins.18:11
rick_h_twitter is getting rewritten in it18:11
rick_h_you know it's all over google18:11
jrwrenyup18:11
rick_h_it's not dead yet for sure18:11
jrwrennetflix is largely java18:12
snap-lJava is great glue18:12
snap-ljust like COBOL18:12
jrwrenglue?18:12
rick_h_psh, it's currently being used to replace the glue18:12
rick_h_it's the workhorse18:12
jrwrenthose things rick_h_ mentioned are not glue, they are the system.18:12
rick_h_yea, there's a reason I keep coming back to really needing to go back and relearn some java18:13
jrwrennah, don't learn it.18:13
snap-lOK, not glue, but rather int he infrastructure18:13
jrwreni mean, maybe enough to read it when you need it.18:13
jrwrenbut not write it.18:13
rick_h_how else to write for android?18:14
jrwrenoh.18:14
jrwrentrue.18:14
rick_h_or a solr parser plugin18:14
jrwrenscala for that :)18:14
BlazeixI'm curious about the lambda expression support coming to java18:14
BlazeixI love the support that C# has for it18:14
snap-lI'm sure it'll be as useful as Regex in Java18:14
gamerchick02jwren, i'm a mechanical engineer. pascal was painfully boring for me. it literally made me cry because I didn't get it.18:15
snap-lie: a tacked-on hacky mess.18:15
rick_h_yea? I mean I find myself using lambdas in python more than before, but still not that often18:15
brouschandroid: phonegap18:15
gamerchick02i've never had a class make me cry out of frustration.18:15
jrwrendepends on what you were trying to do with the pascal, i guess.18:16
jrwrenyou a matlab guru?18:16
rick_h_I'm getting disillusioned after using jquery mobile18:16
rick_h_as much as I want to believe in web on mobile...18:16
jrwrenI'd hate to use java after using C#. its large steps backwards.18:16
snap-lTurbo Pascal was pretty slick18:16
gamerchick02jwren, only for system modelling. and i haven't touched it since 2004 so...18:16
jrwrenas for regex? what is wrong with regex in java?18:17
snap-lIt's not first-class?18:17
jrwrenhow is it not first-class? no language support? all library?18:17
rick_h_it's all class!18:17
snap-lIt's a library18:17
snap-lhttp://download.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/essential/regex/test_harness.html18:17
jrwrenC# has no regex support in language, but I love the .NET regex library18:17
jrwrenpattern and matcher objects are different than .NET's Regex and Matches objects.18:19
jrwreninteresting difference.18:19
jrwrenI can do things with .NET Regex that I don't know how to do with perl re.  .NET regex is a lot like python re AFAICT18:21
jrwrenoh nevermind... I can while (m/blah/) in perl... same thing.18:21
snap-l;)18:22
snap-lPerl is the swiss-army chainsaw when it comes to regex18:22
snap-lI think you could probably build Twitter out of Perl's regex18:22
jrwrenlol18:23
jrwrenor any similar regex.18:23
jrwrenbut they are also SSLLOOWW :(18:23
snap-lhttp://www.infoq.com/articles/twitter-java-use18:24
rick_h_ok, everyone ready for today's "Daily stupid thing from NC Dude!!!" ?18:24
rick_h_http://paste.mitechie.com/show/0cjGS2Fs5JIi0pk5AI1u/18:24
jrwrenRDY?18:24
jrwrenOK18:24
snap-lI love these stories about how such and such company is migrating from blah blah18:24
jrwrenrick_h_: its probably good advise to not use "return" like that :)18:25
snap-land the blah blah haters all trumpet that it's because blah blah sucks and froo froo is awesome.18:25
rick_h_jrwren: you think? lol18:25
rick_h_crap, I better rewrite some code18:25
snap-lWhat the fuck?18:26
rick_h_what's funny is I've had to get him to fix code that used list = xxx.query()18:26
rick_h_dude, in python list() is a function18:26
rick_h_len = xxx18:26
rick_h_nope, that's a functino as well...quit using those varaible names18:26
jrwrenhahaha... redefining list... and len... awesome.18:26
rick_h_this time he got bit. So that's why he needed an IE JS debug tool18:26
rick_h_*sigh*18:26
snap-lGranted, you caught me doing that as well18:27
snap-lbut I'm pretty sure I wouldn't use list = ...18:27
jrwrenany IE or specific IE?18:30
jrwreni like the comments by Matt in that infoq article.18:30
jrwrenI don't recall the last time I read an infoq article that was worth reading.18:31
gamerchick02IE is evil.18:31
gamerchick02(i don't have anything to contribute to this discussion but that. :-P )18:31
jrwrenIE9 and greater are actually OK.18:33
jrwreni mean, yes, deficient in some areas, but at least they render and support reasonable CSS18:33
jrwrenand now you can say "upgrade your IE" instead of trying to support shite IE618:33
jrwrenso you can just target FF or chrome and if it doesn't work in IE... oh well! upgrade your IE! :)18:33
gamerchick02good point, jwren.18:34
gamerchick02but i still prefer firefox or chrome(ium)18:34
jrwrenFF FTW!18:36
jrwrenI've never heard of a "Personal Media Player"  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16855334001&cm_sp=DailyDeal-_-55-334-001-_-Product18:37
jrwrenweird.18:37
rick_h_jrwren: well this was IE8 that he was debugging/etc in18:39
snap-ljrwren:  I think it's just a brain-dead tablet.18:39
gamerchick02it's like a large form psp without the gaming ability.18:42
gamerchick02hah.18:42
jrwrennot a tablet, no network18:45
rick_h_not even wifi?18:45
jrwrenno18:46
rick_h_then throw it away18:47
rick_h_it's useless18:47
gamerchick02it's basically a portable media watcher18:48
jrwrenagreed18:48
jrwrenits like an Archos of 7 years ago.18:50
brouschjrwren: we have something like that for the car18:56
gamerchick02hah. yeah.18:56
brouschi rip stuff to a particular format, put it on SD, and my son can watch it in the car18:56
jrwreninteresting.18:57
brouschthe one i have is pretty durable and came with a car power adapter and sleeve to mount it behind a seat18:58
brouschyou can't get them any more, not that you'd want something with a 7" screen 480x27218:59
