[01:22] <_marx_> ping holstein [01:23] _marx_: yo [01:23] im out at the gig right now [01:23] just checking in :) [01:23] <_marx_> thought you might be [01:23] <_marx_> ping me in the am [01:26] am? [01:26] like morning? [01:26] i dont do mornings ;) [01:26] i should be on around noon [01:26] maybe a bit earlier [01:27] <_marx_> yes, i grok that we have different mornings [01:28] <_marx_> i meant your morning [01:30] <_marx_> see i'm going to bed in about 20 minutes :) [01:33] * _marx_ trying to get used to unity [01:33] <_marx_> and still just doesn't get it [02:38] _marx_: i got a minute right now [02:39] im using gnome still, and im planning on using XFCE [02:39] thats what ubuntustudio is going to [02:39] unity will get better as soon as customizations kick in [02:39] which'll be soon [02:40] i think the idea of it is great, and im glad ubuntu has its own thing [02:41] im not planning on using it [02:41] i was a little dissapointed when i actually tried unity and gnome3 [02:41] i feel like its a bit more of a duplication of effort than is necessary [02:53] * BugeyeD updating lapdance to 11.04 now, will see what this unity thing is all about. assuming it will run on my 2005 centrino hardware. [02:53] unity is rock bottom on the one desktop machine i tried it on before; i don't build boxes with nice graphics because i'm accustomed to staring an an xterm. [02:54] every update thus far has broken video for me, so i fully expect more of the same. [03:03] unity is actually pretty light weight [03:03] not like LXDE light... but light-ish [03:04] and theres a 2d version i havent tried yet [03:04] i'm sure the 2d would be required in my case [03:05] gotta go find something else to do ... what few hairs i have left are getting ever more grey watching the upgrade process ... [03:06] yeah... i spent about 24hours waiting one 11.10 to upgrade, and now its not booting ;) [03:23] mine came back. video looks ok so far, so i'm a little shocked. [03:24] 'ubuntu' complains that i don't have hardware for unity, and sends me to 'classic mode' which is just gnome. [03:24] also have 'netbook edition 2d' which appears to be what i was running before - probably something i installed myself and is left over from prior to the upgrade. [03:24] yeah, you need to install unity2d afterwards [03:33] holstein: yup, 'unity-2d' did it. seems to be a decent thing to include by default. [03:34] well, you would think it would default to unity2d instead of gnome [03:34] i think thats the idea going forward [03:34] those are really 2 totally different things though [03:34] i cant imaging them maintaing them both for very long [03:34] yep. thanks for the pointer. probably wouldn't have googled it, would have just gone without. at least now i get to see it. [03:34] i think it'll just be normal unity, and you'll have to tweak if you dont have 3d [03:35] they look and act the same though AFAIK [04:01] where are the prefs? trying to figure out keyboard shortcuts and can't seem to find my own arse ... [04:02] BugeyeD: hang on... [04:02] of course. found it *right* after i asked ... [04:03] it shows up under 'all apps' [04:03] http://www.webupd8.org/2011/04/ubuntu-unity-keyboard-shortcuts.html [04:03] i was using that when i was trying to stay in unity for a bit [04:03] i hope i'm missing something here - that's an unintelligent way to get there [04:04] i just set that as my wallpaper [04:04] heh [04:11] looking a lot like osx [04:11] not a bad thing from a desktop perspective. [04:19] the background image thing is a good idea, but some of the hints don't appear to work for me, such as auto-tiling and such. [04:19] BugeyeD: they could be different from 2d to 3d [04:20] which would be just slackness i think [19:18] <_marx_> holstein: is it mid-morning yet? [22:40] * _marx_ has log files going back to '07
