cjohnstonGreetings, I installed the daily last night. When I get to the login screen, I click on my username, and then I just get a background and a mouse.. No toolbars, no enter password, nothing.. Any ideas?01:46
cjohnstonIf I ctrl alt f1, I get a terminal and can login through that.. I ran update and upgrade to no avail01:47
cjohnstonI just found out that if I click on my username is when it goes blank, but I can select other, type in the same username, password, and then it will log me in02:01
snadgedoes someone know off hand if the xorg-edgers ppa version of libva/libva-dev is patched for xvba support?03:11
antiheroArgh, any idea why my gdm says "failed to load session Ubuntu"?09:19
jbichaantihero: gdm or lightdm?09:33
antiherojbicha: gdm. Looking at .xession-errors it seems that glx isn't loaded. I've done nvidia-xconfig and now it fails to load X as apparently my nvidia module isn't loaded09:36
antiheromodprobe nvidia fails to find the module09:36
jbichayeah, there are problems with the Nvidia drivers09:37
antiherojbicha: In that they entirely don't work? I'm sure I did have it working at some point.09:37
jbichaI uninstalled xserver-xorg-video-nouveau and reinstalled nvidia-current to get my wife's computer working09:37
jbichabut that may not be the "right answer"09:38
jbichaantihero: yes, the nvidia drivers worked until fairly recently09:38
antiheroAre ubuntu working towards using nouveau then?09:38
antiheroI'll reboot09:39
jbichabug 811701 maybe09:40
ubottuLaunchpad bug 811701 in nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) "Nvidia driver unfunctional in oneiric since 2011-07-17" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/81170109:40
jbichaI think nouveau is loading itself too early even if blacklisted by the Nvidia drivers09:40
antiherojbicha: Aye, I remember a similar problem when a nvidia related module loaded early in order to provide a high res console, and preventend the actual nvidia module loading.09:42
antiherolol apparently I'm running out of battery (I'm on mains)09:42
antiheroThe new settings panel sucks, where is appearance settings etc?09:43
jbichaantihero: that's a GNOME 3 design decision09:45
jbichayou can change your background but for other stuff, you may want to install gnome-tweak-tool09:45
antiherojbicha: That's pretty unfair to all the countless theme creators :\09:46
penguin42hmm a new unity-panel-services crasher today11:39
penguin42yofel: How's KDE being for you in +1 ?13:08
yofelnice, but for you everything that somehow uses kate, or has an embedded texteditor should be broken at least13:09
penguin42hmm not sure I use any of those13:10
* penguin42 only has this <--- machine on +1 at the moment which is Gnome, and am thinking doing that machine ----> which is mostly KDE13:12
penguin42unity-panel-services is quite unstable on Gnome at the moment13:12
IdleOnewhy is reqonk defaulting to Catalan when the rest of the system is in English?14:15

nperryDoes lightdm still use xsession files?14:37
Ampelbeinnperry: it should14:38

jakubohi, is there a way to reset volume and input settings in pulse audio?15:46
jakuboor rather output15:49
BluesKajjakubo, both input and out can be turned up full with,  alsamixer -V all15:55
jakuboand if alsamixer isnt working?15:56
jakubopulseaudio seems to be autonomously15:56
penguin42jakubo: paman15:56
BluesKajjakubo, if alsamixer isn't working then your pulseaudio won't either , pulseaudio get's it's signals from alsa afaik15:57
jakubohow does pulseaudio store its output settings?15:57
jakubobesides, its alsamixer thats not working not alsa itself15:58
BluesKajjakubo, install pavucontrol , that will hold your settings, but alsamixer has to be working15:58
BluesKajtype alsmixer in the terminal , make sure there's no M in the boxes at the bottom of the ctrls15:59
jakuboi tried with pavucontrol16:00
BluesKajpulse audio is just another layer soundserver , it needs alsa to work16:00
penguin42one more turtle on the pile16:01
dupondjeWhat would be the best place to report a bug in Intel Wireless driver ?16:02
jakuboi asked for it before... ill recapulate16:03
jakubosound is there put very quiet although all pulseaudio bars ar up to 120%, alsamixer saays there is no mixer device, it seems that my chip CM-6501 is seen as USB and maybe has some oss mixer which is obviously deprecated, at least the alsa site says so. sound has been working quite well until i changed the output to analog stereo and then back to analog speakers. any idea?16:03
jakuboi just want to get back to where it was, ... for now, i tried to purge pulseaudio and pulseaudio utils, nothing changed after reinstall16:04
jakuboand pulseaudio hangs sometimes, but thats a different story16:05
BluesKajjakubo, install alsa-utils16:05
jakuboplease DO read my posts16:06
jakuboim sry, my fault16:06
jakuboit is installed16:06
BluesKajno need to purge , the utils gets taken out with pulseaudio16:06
jakubobut not the configurations obviously16:07
BluesKajthen, sudo apt-get install --reinstall alsa-base , them alsa-utils ...your audio driver conf files have stripped with the purge16:08
BluesKajerr  them=then16:08
jakubotreid that the last time aswell16:09
jakubomy driver conf files did "what"?16:11
jakubousually pulse audio is treated as a card in alsamixer on its own isnt it?16:13
babilenHi all. Would oneiric be the suite that new packages should be based on? Which mirror contains oneiric if that is the case?16:17
bjsniderjakubo, the userland config files are in hidden directories in your home directory, such as ~/.pulse16:22
jakubook thx16:23
dupondjeNobody around with a "Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230" ?16:23
bjsniderthe guest account doesn't use those files so you might try logging in as guest and testing sound16:23
babilenIs oneiric available on the mirrors?16:23
bjsniderif sound works as expected in the guest account it's a userland problem16:23
jakubook ill try16:24
jakubois anyone else not able to logout properly?16:26
bjsniderdoes _anything_ work on that system16:27
bjsniderdoes the frigging mouse pointer still work16:27
jakuboactually yet, everything else16:27
jakuboi got the logout problem on my laptop too16:28
jakuboi guess thats something with light dm16:28
jakuboits rather quiet on the guest account too16:30
bjsniderwell then it's probbaly an oeniric bug16:30
bjsniderunless it's bad hardware16:31
bjsniderbut you can test that with an older livecd16:31
bjsnideroneiric _is_ alpha software at this point16:31
jakuboyou think its bad hardware if i triggered itvis pulseaudio configs instantly?16:31
bjsnideryou don't have any right to demand stability16:31
jakuboi didnt i just ask for advice how to set things back16:32
bjsniderwell, the easiest way is to clean install natty16:32
bjsnideryou can get that done in 15 minutes16:32
jakubonot if you are having a software raid set up16:33
jakubobut i would be too lazy even if i didnt16:33
bjsnidercopy your home directory to an external backup source like a hdd16:33
bjsnideror you could report a bug and wait for a fix to be released16:34
jakubothere are bug reports on the net... there have been for years actually...16:35
jakuboat least for the alsa driver16:38
BluesKajbjsnider, is there command to dircect dd to use mulitple cpu cores while copying to iso ..one core is at 20% and the other at 95% while copying and the reslts were fine on one disc but total pixellation on another16:51
BluesKajcorrection on=from16:53
penguin42what was the dd command you used/16:53
penguin42they really shouldn't use much CPU16:54
yofelyou want to increase the blocksize, uses more memory but less CPU17:04
BluesKajI just used  bs=1024, means byte size I think17:09
yofelblock size, 1024 would be 1KB, if you're copying an iso $((1024*1024)) == 1MB would be faster17:09
yofeldefault is 512 bytes which takes ages for that amount of data17:10
bjsniderwould the seek/write cycle of the drive be the biggest choke point in dd?17:13
bjsnideri mean is the cpu time iowait?17:13
BluesKajok , so , M  =1024*102417:13
bjsniderif your cpu is up at 90% is most of it iowait?17:13
BluesKajone core is ar 95% , the other is only at 20% ..wouldn't sharing the load be more efficient17:14
BluesKajiowait?17:15
bjsnideryeah, input/output wait17:15
bjsnidermeans the cpu is waiting for hardware to give it info it has requested17:16
BluesKajyofel what's blocksize command ..I have the man page open but... count=BLOCKS , .what size ? ..speed isn't necessary just accuracy17:24
penguin42if it's showing a core at a % it's not normally iowait17:35
* penguin42 would use bs= at least 2048 on an iso to a drive; CDs basic sectors are 2k (for data)17:35
yofelBluesKaj: no, bs= is blocksize, you don't need count= if you're dd-ing a fiel17:36
yofel*file17:36
BluesKajok, yofel thanks , looks like the disc is problematic ...not dd17:39
=== jacob_ is now known as jacob
BluesKajodd tho , when I play the disk , it works fine , but when I try to dd or cp , it's totally pixellated and unwatchable18:10
BluesKajthe first disc in this set dd 'd  fine to an iso , the 2nd plays ok , but seems uncopyable18:13
BluesKajanyway k9copy worked , copied the 2nd disc to an iso without a hitch18:44
bjsnideryou shouldn't need any extra software to copy a disc to an iso, just right-click and select copy disc18:48
penguin42BluesKaj: Is it just data or is it video/audio ?18:51
BluesKajvideo/audio18:52
penguin42DVD?18:54
BluesKajbjsnider, the playback on vlc was totally corrupt on the 2nd disc iso with dd and cp , the first disc dd to iso, plays fine ...go figure18:55
BluesKajpenguin42, yeah dvd18:55
bjsnidermaybe the disc was still encrypted. maybe libdvdcss2 couldn't grab the key18:55
penguin42BluesKaj: None-data discs are a bit special; their sectors are actually different sizes for the audio and video data; I've never tried dding one directly18:56
BluesKajthis pc is our media server , so i'm copying  our fav dvds to the hdd,18:57
BluesKajpenguin42, well, this packaged set , Cream at the Royal Albert, the first one dd > iso and plays fine on vlc , dd-ing the 2nd iso wasn't playable ...rather odd, no ?19:00
penguin42indeed19:01
* penguin42 prefers Clapton when he was playing alone19:01
BluesKajk9copy seemed to do the trick on the 2nd , anyeay19:01
BluesKajanyway19:01
BluesKajpenguin42, well for my generation , the Cream reunion was historical19:03

dsdaleHey folks, I think there might be an issue in numpy's distutils that needs to be patched for 11.10. In /usr/lib/pymodules/python2.7/numpy/distutils/system_info.py, the default_x11_{lib,include}_dirs are pointing to nonexistent directories, and should be changed to21:30
dsdale   default_x11_lib_dirs = libpaths(['/usr/lib/X11', '/usr/lib'], platform_bits)21:30
dsdale    default_x11_include_dirs = ['/usr/include/X11', '/usr/include']21:30
micahgdsdale: that doesn't sound right, considering multiarch21:32
dsdalewell, /usr/X11/lib and /usr/X11/include don't exist21:33
micahgdsdale: oh, that's definitely wrong :)21:34
micahgdsdale: can you file a bug for this?21:34
dsdalesure. Could you please provide a link?21:35
micahgdsdale: ubuntu-bug python-numpy21:35
dsdaleSorry, that doesn't mean anything to me21:35
micahgdsdale: you can just run it on the command line21:36
dsdaleah21:36
micahgit'll open up launchpad with some information about the package21:36
dsdalethanks21:36
dsdaleTraceback (most recent call last):21:37
dsdale  File "/usr/share/apport/apport-kde", line 36, in <module>21:37
dsdale    apport.fatal('Could not import module, is a package upgrade in progress?  Error: %s', str(e))21:37
dsdaleNameError: name 'apport' is not defined21:37
micahgugh, I guess apport is broken as well21:38
micahgyofel: any ideas ^^21:40
yofeldsdale: works for me, does 'apport-cli python-numpy' in konsole fail too?21:42
dsdaleno21:43
yofeluh, now that's fun, from the trace it seems that an import error happens, but before apport is loaded, then the error message tries to use the not-imported apport and that call crashes too21:44
