ubuntuuk-planet[Andrew] GtkAction  HowTo and Why - http://whyareyoureadingthisurl.wordpress.com/2011/07/17/gtkaction-howto-and-why/17:13
AlanJenkinshey guys, anyone know the best way of forcing a package to uninstall via dpkg?17:14
AlanJenkinsgot a package that has a removal script that keeps becoming a zombie17:15
AlanJenkinsso never completes17:15
AlanJenkinsany recommendations?17:15
directhexAlanJenkins, you can remove the removal script, if you're desperate17:18
AlanJenkinsyeah looks like that may be the only way17:18
AlanJenkins=/17:18
gyyroghello17:18
AlanJenkinswhere do they normally hide directhex?17:18
directhexit's in /var/lib/dpkg/info/$packagename.prerm17:18
AlanJenkinskk17:18
AlanJenkinsi'll move it to a diff name and try that17:19
gyyrogI need some advice. I am a UK citizen that has lived my entire life in the states. I am interested in moving to the UK and working for a while.17:20
gyyrogWhat is a good source to find IT related jobs out there?17:20
AlanJenkinsok that worked nice one directhex17:21
AlanJenkinsjust had to rm -R /home/NX and userdel nx afterwards in place of the prerm script =)17:22
AlanJenkinsthen just rm'ed the script after17:22
AlanJenkinsfyi looks like nxserver free edition doesnt play well with ubuntu 11.04 (didnt in my case anyways) =)17:22
DJonesgyyrog: There is a linux jobs mailing list, bt I'm stuggling to find a link for it17:24
gyyrogI have some apple certifications now. Is there much call for that out there?17:24
gyyrogIn the US we have a lot of headhunter/placement services. Has anyone had a good experience with ones over there?17:25
DJoneshttp://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/ Worth keeping an eye on, no idea about about apple cert's, not something I've noticed being spoken about, maybe somebody else might have an idea though17:26

gyyrogIt was the only job I could find out of school17:29

shaunowent nuts & left :)17:32
gyyrogThats what I am in the process of17:32
gyyrogIt is beautiful up here, but little diversity of culture and next to no IT jobs17:33
shaunoworked in a coffee shop on the other side of the bay for a few years.  moved back to europe at the first semi-sensible chance that came up17:33
shaunoIT-wise you either work at the hospital, the tribe, or you leave17:33

AlanBell!ask | dude_18:28
lubotu3dude_: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)18:28
dude_AlanBell, lubotu3 thankyou for your hospitality. i'm new to irc and have been in some hostile channels before now that turn thier noses up at giga-noobs such as myself lol.18:36
dude_hello i'm having some trouble with xchat. could someone please help me? thank you18:36
dude_oops18:36
jacobwwhat trouble are you having with xchat?18:36
dude_I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 in Gnome 2.x and the tray icon has recently vanished. I have checked the box in >preferences>alerts but it still isn't there. i've also tried sudo-apt remove xchat. and autoremove after that. and i've deleted the .xchat from my home folder, reinstalled it and still it doesn't show. thanks18:37
jacobwyou might not have a notification area on the panel18:41
jacobwthe 'app indicators' applet is seperate from the notification area applet18:41
jacobwtry adding a notification area to the panel18:41
dude_ok i'm going to try logging in and out to see if the changes worked18:49
dude_wish, i would like to thank you. that was the solution. another recommended me adding xchat to a whitelist using gconf-editor>desktop>unity. i had tried that but it was crass. your solution worked without it18:54

AlanJenkinsanyone have any experience setting up neatx on ubuntu server 11.04?19:31
GreenDanceHi, I would like to run some server side commands, I was hoping to create a web interface to do them, but I've been told doing the commands via a web interface is very insecure, so would it be better to do them just via ssh instead?20:44

dotwaffleI'm fed up with my overheating Macbook Pro, and looking to get a new laptop. I'm assuming most laptops are now pretty much Ubuntu compatible out of the box, any recommendations? I'm more after looks than features, though playing 720p MKVs would be nice.21:08

reaper4334Hey, has anyone here any idea on how to change MAC address of a wireless adapter using Broadcom drivers?21:48
zleaper can you change a mac address21:48
oracologyreaper4334: try doing it through gnome network manager?21:48
zleapi thought it was hardwired in21:48
oracologyzleap: you can spoof it i think.21:48
zleapah21:49
reaper4334oracology: Thanks, I'll give that a try now. I tried using ifconfig but with no luck21:51
oracologyreaper4334: verify through network manager afterwards. good luck ;)21:53
reaper4334oracology: unfortunately didn't work. even though the router has no address filtering, once I've changed it I can't connect21:59
oracologyreaper4334: ah damn. try restarting?22:00
reaper4334I did :( I had the same problem with the terminal method using ifconfig, it seems it's just an issue with the drivers22:01
oracologyreaper4334: ah sorry mate. i tried :(22:01
reaper4334oracology: thanks anyway, if it weren't for my stupid hardware your solution would work :P22:01
