Hurraycool, Im Dling now thanks01:28
HurrayI'm really new to linux, why do you all use xubuntu?01:29
knomeit's quite light, it's pretty conservative with xfce, and easily configurable01:29
Hurraywhat is xfce?01:30
knomexfce is the desktop environment in xubuntu01:30
Hurrayinteresting01:30
Hurrayand do you use this as your main OS?01:31
knomeyes, exclusively01:31
Hurraycool01:31
Hurrayyou ever get a virus?01:31
knomeno, there is pretty much no viruses in linux, and even those will need you to do something sub-optimal, that is, inserting your root/sudo password in a wrong spot01:32
Hurrayis there any way to check your system for viruses?01:35
knome!info clamav01:35
ubottuclamav (source: clamav): anti-virus utility for Unix - command-line interface. In component main, is optional. Version 0.97+dfsg-2ubuntu1 (natty), package size 123 kB, installed size 592 kB01:35

GridCubeit should play using the totem plugin01:39
GridCubeyou do need the restricted extras to be installed01:39
knomeor if not, use the mozilla-mplayer package01:39
Hurraysudo apt-install totem?01:39
GridCube(as a last option you could try the vlc plugin, but i don't really know if thats a good idea)01:40
GridCubeHurray, totem should be already installed on your system01:40
Hurrayso how do i make totem work?01:41
GridCubeyou just need to end installing the restricted extras as knome said to you earlier01:41
GridCubeopen a termina and write:01:41
GridCubesudo apt-get install xubuntu-restricted-extras01:41
GridCubethen put your password01:42

DerpadongHow do you add a theme to xfce and use it?03:10
orngjce223You download the theme folder and stick it in /usr/share/themes03:20
Derpadongand then?03:23
orngjce223Then it shows up in Appearance properties and you can add it03:24
orngjce223the theme has to be properly formed of course03:24
orngjce223But it works03:24
David-Aorngjce223: alternatively you can place the theme folder in /home/[username]/.themes/ (does not require sysprivileges and remains after a reinstall)03:29
orngjce223Ah03:30
orngjce223's cool03:30
orngjce223That's where I put it when I didn't have /home/[username] to work with though03:30
David-A* orngjce223, i mean Derpadong03:30
orngjce223(which is, making a Remastersys-based distro via /etc/skel)03:30
orngjce223Heh03:31
orngjce223's fine03:31
DerpadongSo which one will show it in themes?03:33
David-Aorngjce223: ok, thats just different ways of maintaining a config over reinstalls. I tend to do have as much adaptions as possible in /home, and let the system be as much distro default as possiple (plus installed packages).03:35
orngjce223Mmhm03:35
orngjce223Derpadong, either will work03:35
orngjce223.themes is if you back up /home, scattering your own files across the filesystem is rather less maintainable but I do it.03:36

JumbiShrimpAnyone any good at configuring display drivers in xubuntu?03:48
David-AUsed to be, not any more, but shot, whats the problem?03:51
David-A!ask03:51
ubottuPlease don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)03:51
JumbiShrimpI have a Dell inspiron 2600 laptop.. 128 meg of ram and i'm trying to run a low resource intensive GUI. But I cannot get it to display video.. I have tried following instructions that deal with the I810 chipset03:53
David-AJumbiShrimp: When playing video, do you get a blank window, or an error message? Sound? What instructions did you use? (Web-address?)04:00
JumbiShrimpDavid: It will just give me a white screen with no output.. Audio works but i cannot see what i'm doing... http://life-of-brian.com/2009/12/installing-ubuntu-linux-on-a-dell-inspiron-2600/04:03
David-AWill you get a consol (full screen terminal) if you press Control+Alt+F1? From there you can login and look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log if X had trouble initiating? Especially when loading driver "i810" or "intel". (Just a hunch, I dont really know what the problem is)04:12
JumbiShrimp Well it ends in "Fatal server error: no screens found"04:20
David-AJumbiShrimp: can you find the log lines where it loads drivers (intel or i810) if a driver is missing?04:23
JumbiShrimpThis is what i found "(II) LoadModule: "intel"04:29
JumbiShrimp(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//intel_drv.so04:29
JumbiShrimpdlopen: libpciaccess.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory04:29
JumbiShrimp(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//intel_drv.so04:29
JumbiShrimp(II) UnloadModule: "intel"04:29
JumbiShrimp"04:29
David-Afor xubuntu 10.04 "intel_drv.so" is in package "xserver-xorg-video-intel", have you installed that package?04:34
JumbiShrimpLet me download that04:36
David-AJumbiShrimp: download? no, install! (you know apt-get, synaptic, or software center)04:38
JumbiShrimpsorry thats what i meant04:39
David-ADavid-A: good :)  i'm a bit jumpy, will soon go to sleep04:41
David-Aand talking to my self04:41
David-Aagain04:41
JumbiShrimplol, well it seems that it has made no differance.. same problem same thing in the log file04:46
JumbiShrimpThanks for all the help.. I must be off to bed04:52

tdignanSo in the regular ubuntu distro, a utility is included that allows you to exceed 100% volume with pulseaudio (increasing the amplitude)17:11
tdignanbut I cannot find that tool in xubuntu.. I don't really care whether I have it, but I need to amplify the volume, it's way too quiet17:11
tdignanhow can I adjust the pulseaudio master above 100%?17:11
charlie-tcaThat tool could be installed, but have to find out the name and install it yourself.17:14
charlie-tcaI do not know what it is.17:14
tdignanyeah, I know how to install packages :( my problem is the same as yours.17:15
tdignanNo idea what it's called.17:15
charlie-tcaTry pavucontrol, but I don't think that is the same tool17:15
tdignanyeah, I am installing it17:16
tdignanthanks man.17:16
tdignanwon't let me exceed 100%...17:17
tdignanhmm17:17
GridCubetdignan: try the gnome sound thing17:35
tdignanGridCube: what is it called?17:56
tdignanI don't want to pull in all of gnome.17:56
tdignanThat's why I'm using xubuntu :/17:56
tdignanI don't like unity ,or gnome 3.17:57
GridCubeno its the gnome sound configuration17:57
tdignanwell, except for on my netbook ;)17:57
GridCubei can't recall its name :(17:57
tdignani'll check on my netbook later.17:57
orngjce223The way I would solve that problem is by installing a software amp and then using JACK to send everything through it, but /that/ is not a solution since it requires extensive configuration and real-time kernel.17:58
tdignani think i'm going to buy some better headphones/speakers ;)17:58
tdignancross-platform solution17:58
orngjce223Hehe17:58
orngjce223Yes, or a hardware amp17:59
orngjce223But again, not a solution since I work with "semi pro" audio and you probably won't17:59
GridCubetdignan: try gnome-volume-control18:00

philipballewalright. seemes easy enough21:36
charlie-tcagood luck with startx, usually with Xfce, you want to use startxfce4 to get all the pieces starting21:37
