[00:03] Did you guys download the "base-files" recommended update from Update Manager? How important is it? [00:03] earthling_: whats up? [00:03] hi holstein [00:03] i usually look over the upgrades and take them [00:04] it doesn't have any linked project page [00:04] me too [00:04] linked project? [00:04] from Launch Pad or CVE [00:04] etc.. [00:04] i disable the update manager, and auto whatever [00:05] i just run sudo apt-get update, and apt-get upgrade or dist-upgrade when needed, and google what i need [00:05] so you download all the recommended and important security updates? [00:05] http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/base-files [00:06] earthling_: unless i dont want/need one of them for some reason [00:07] that page is from hardy heron version? that was the last time it was updated? [00:07] http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/base-files [00:07] I see it has a lot of versions [00:07] http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/base-files [00:07] it wont change in function [00:08] http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/base-files [00:08] I'm using lucid [00:08] me too [00:08] it says "essential" so I guess its pretty important [00:08] well, its essential :) [00:09] yep :) [00:09] thx [00:09] have you thought about updating to 10.10? [00:09] hmmm... sure [00:10] I'm happy with lucid, wonder if the next is better [00:10] am i going to? [00:10] nah [00:10] i might install 11.10 on my netbook [00:10] and i install ubuntustudio testing images often for all versions [00:10] it does seem to slow down sometimes for me, I log out and log in and it speeds up [00:10] I see [00:11] testing images is that like booting from a usb drive? [00:12] well, it could be... but i need to install them locally to test JACK with audio hardware [00:12] for the most part, its gotta be on metal [00:13] so its like dual boot system? [00:13] partitions [00:13] sometimes i can get away with that, but i have a spare box [00:39] do programs need to be closed when I use Update Manager? [00:40] I remember on windows it always said to close programs when installing new programs [00:41] no. you dont [00:41] earthling_, when it is installing updates no closing id required. maybe in some special circumstance, but nothing i have seen. [00:42] interesting [00:42] earthling_: he is correct, you can have programs open when installing, now when updating or upgrading a package like say firefox, you will have to restart firefox but that is it [00:43] I see [00:43] but that is only after you have installed, and only to get the new features/patches [02:16] is there a way when installing ubuntu to select the packages i want to install when installing. I want to have a somewhat minimal. one task install on a old laptop [02:16] philipballew: you could make your own live CD with something like UCK or remastersys [02:17] philipballew: or install minimal without GUI and go from there... easiest way is to install server edition... [02:17] yeah, in the alternate installer theres a CLI only option [02:17] it has 128 mb of ram [02:17] i plan to upgrade soon though [02:18] want to find the one that will make the computer run fastest [02:19] try http://zenix-os.net/ [02:20] looks intresting [02:21] +1 for zenix [02:21] never heard of it [02:22] can laso look at bodhi in that case... [02:22] currently it has debian cli only on it [02:26] philipballew: what does? [02:26] the lappy with 128 of ram ^^ [02:29] philipballew: if zenix isnt your fancy you will want to check out lubuntu [02:29] will lxde run on that little ram? [02:29] might not [02:29] philipballew: lubuntu can [02:30] philipballew: feel free to join the #lubuntu and #lubuntu-offtopic channels to chat it up with them [02:30] but without slowing down all the time? [02:30] philipballew: depends on what you will be doing [02:30] philipballew: you cannot expect a 2GB ram performance with only 128 mb [02:30] playing music [02:30] philipballew: you got 128 of ram... [02:31] i can up it if i decide its worth the 20 bucks [02:31] philipballew: if playing music all you will be doing then why even install an entire OS? [02:31] here is what i wanna do. [02:32] philipballew: go with a minimal install, install fluxbox IF you really need gui and use a cli based music player [02:32] have a machine hooked up to a external hard drive with all my music and play the files from there [02:32] or say ssh into my desktop and just grab them [02:32] yeah, mp3blaster, something ncurses or CLI [02:32] i have csum [02:33] philipballew: my suggestion still stands [02:33] philipballew: dont even bother installing an entire os [02:33] you could have speakers hooked up to it, and run a player in screen, connect and reconnect via SSH [02:33] what exactly would you do [02:33] or stream as an ssh share or whatever... [02:33] im gonna plug the laptop into my home speakers [02:33] you dont *need* x for any of that really [02:34] cli would give me some good geek cred [02:42] philipballew: do a debian minimal install and just play music, if you go trying to make your music available to others within your home than that 128mb is not going to cut it [02:42] philipballew: dont go installing no webserver to allow webinterface playing or nothing like that [02:42] philipballew: although having your own streaming music server does rock [02:42] true. i can up the ram to 6 hundred somthing [02:42] * stlsaint set one up! [02:43] philipballew, might tonight [02:43] * philipballew might tonight [02:43] philipballew: if you do you will have to up the ram, i would suggest at minimum 1GB [02:44] and thats not worth it [02:44] holstein: thats only if a actual music streaming server is setup [02:44] old ram like that can cost more, you could spend 80 bucks getting that up to 1gb [02:44] or more [02:44] philipballew: if your staying local than 128 will be fine [02:45] i got my eeepc 1.6Ghz with 1gig of ram for $150 [02:45] US ^^ [02:50] holstein, how? [02:51] philipballew: ?? [02:51] holstein, the netbook. haha? [02:51] its a good deal [02:51] OH.. used [02:51] im just sayin, you dont want to spend *any* cash on an old laptop [02:51] stlsaint, well good enough for me, ebay has it for 24 [02:52] not when they are bascially giving away atom netbooks these days [02:52] but not sure if that even worth it [02:52] they now come with ubuntu pre installed [02:58] hello :) [02:59] hey folks would somebody mind giving Semitones_tea a hand [02:59] i believe he has a xorg issue but i must leave [02:59] I got referred here by #lubuntu, I seem to be stuck with a weird xorg issue that keeps me from using my computer [02:59] as stlsaint says :) [02:59] Semitones_tea: oh hey do you have a usb drive that works? can your computer boot via usb? [03:00] Semitones_tea: if so that boot a linux live cd, mount your computers hdd, edit your xorg.conf, (first make a backup of it to xorg.conf.old or .bak) [03:00] stlsaint, only if I use PloP from a cd, I'm afraid. It is a rather old computer [03:00] Semitones_tea: oh :| [03:00] Semitones_tea: are you dual booting this system? [03:01] stlsaint, it has two hard drives, but I think only one operating system [03:01] plop is awesome :) [03:01] it is [03:02] Semitones_tea: i dont know what plop is but you need to find a way to get into a livecd/usb [03:03] i must go now, sorry to leave like this [03:03] stlsaint: you can boot a CD with plop on it, and access USB media to boot it [03:03] that's ok, thanks a lot for all your help getting me started [03:03] on older hardare that doesnt USB boot :) [03:04] Semitones_tea: i would try booting an older kernel [03:04] Semitones_tea: ok well you need to get into that live environment and mv xorg to a backup or rename it basically [03:04] you can also try the recovery kernel [03:04] so then you will not have a xorg.conf but instead you will just have xorg.conf.bak then reboot [03:04] holstein: cannot get grub [03:04] you'll want to do what stlsaint suggests before breaking the current xorg [03:05] yeah? [03:05] thats odd [03:05] Semitones_tea: in that case, i would test the hard drive [03:05] maybe run fdisk [03:05] Semitones_tea: post the error you were getting [03:05] it has xorg written all over it [03:05] ok hold on I'll go start it [03:05] for all this stuff, you'll need a live CD though [03:05] yep [03:05] the cd drive worked until not long ago [03:06] alright im out [03:06] alright, thanks stlsaint :D [03:06] holstein, do you think the cd drive could be misconfigured in BIOS? [03:06] Semitones_tea: if you cant boot some live media, you'll have a very challenging time [03:07] Semitones_tea: is this a laptop of desktop? (i think desktop as you said two drives) [03:07] it is a desktop, a Gateway P3 [03:07] good [03:07] so you're only a couple bucks away from an optical drive [03:08] oh awesome :D [03:08] where can I get one? [03:08] they are cheap new [03:08] new egg? [03:08] but, i see them at the charity shops all the tiime [03:09] time* [03:09] Semitones_tea: if you were near me, i literally have a stack you could go through [03:09] i have one... but shipping defeats that purpose [03:09] i am in ca myself [03:10] ebay has good ones [03:10] eh... id just keep an eye on the charity shops [03:10] ok I'll see what I can find [03:10] any IDE optical drive will work? [03:10] if you are looking in the righ trash can, you'll find one ;) [03:10] yeah [03:11] haha [03:11] it helps if you know that guy who fixes everybody's computers. he'd have some [03:11] hold on, I'm going to restart and tell you the error message [03:11] * philipballew wished i wasnt that guy [03:11] lol [03:12] IT's all good! [03:21] hey so how do I disconnect the IDE ribbon from the cdrom drive? [03:21] I have another one I can slide in [03:22] stlsaint: just carefully really [03:22] try and pull it out straight, and all at once, so you dont bend the pins [03:22] hold the sides [03:23] but, if its bad, you can learn from a mistake on it ;) [03:23] i can't really get a good grip :p [03:23] i just yank it out [03:23] but, i have IDE cables, and extra drives [03:24] where you get them holstein ? [03:25] pulling on the ribbon seemed to work :P [03:25] philipballew: i strip dead machines [03:25] nice.! [03:26] yeah, comes in handy [03:30] well i swapped in a new cdrom, bios still says it can't detect a cd rom [03:30] maybe the bios is wrong? [03:30] semitones_: ive seen them where you can set the IDE channels to auto [03:31] you'll want that [03:31] its challenging because all the bioses are quite different [03:32] ok this is the error I get: x session: unable to launch "startlxde" X session -- "startlxde" not found; falling back to the default session. (okay) [03:32] semitones_: so, you are getting to grub then [03:32] you might just have it hidden [03:32] hold shift [03:32] or press after bios [03:33] yeah, you should be able to hit control+alt+F2 [03:33] control+alt+F7 should get you back where you are [03:33] but, that might get you a terminal window you can work in [03:33] "ide controler" was set to primary, I changed it to "both" [03:33] semitones_: thats not too bad [03:33] still not getting to grub, virtual terminals still don't work [03:34] trying to boot again with 'both' [03:34] semitones_: you wont see LXDE errors like that unless you are getting in [03:34] at least, thats what i think... [03:35] http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=142&t=69364 [03:35] sweet now it finds the cd rom :D [03:35] http://www.forumubuntusoftware.info/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=5553 [03:35] holstein, that's why it's so weird that I can't get a virtual terminal! [03:36] semitones_: i think you have grub hidden [03:36] I think so too [03:36] hit the shift key while booting like philipballew says [03:36] holding shift is supposed to start it, but that hasn't been working [03:36] after the bios splash just start tapping it [03:37] you can boot a live CD and unhide it [03:37] I got the live cd to start though, so I'm going to unhide it that way [03:37] semitones_: you need to *not* mess around too much in there [03:37] is chroot still the preferred method? [03:37] i dont think this is a serious issue [03:37] i think you could do more damage than good trying to mess about too much [03:38] holstein, how does reinstalling lubuntu from the live cd sound to you :p [03:38] semitones_: fine, a little overkill though [03:38] doesn't solve the mystery I'm afraid, but I'd be happy with it [03:39] IF reminstalling is an option, then, i would try some more serious things before you wipe [03:39] holstein, ok how about unhiding grub first [03:39] try unhiding grub, and going to recovery, and making a differnt user account [03:39] try checking for ugrades [03:40] if you're OK reinstalling, then, you really cant break anything too bad... [03:40] most folks freak about reinstalling... [03:41] I don't think there's much on this hard drive, so I'd kind of like a fresh start actually [03:41] would take less time [03:41] yeah, id mess with it a bit for educationaly purposes... in case it comes up again, but not too long [03:42] educational* [03:43] semitones_: good luck [03:43] philipballew: o/ [03:43] * holstein is outty... GN all [03:44] gnite holstein, thanks a bunch :D [03:54] if i'm copy a bunch on my desktop over ssh from my laptop. while the files are copying, can i exit ssh session or while that stop the copy prossess? [04:00] does my hard drive absolutely need two jumper pins for it to be the master one [04:00] do you only have one? [04:00] yeah [04:00] it is all the way on the right [04:01] well I had two hard drives [04:01] but I took out the old one that was "master" [04:01] now the BIOS doesn't know I have any hard drives [04:02] can you change the bios? [04:02] hold on i'll try [04:02] okay [04:02] never done this before myself [05:08] philipballew, hey looks like it is installing fine now. Thanks for all your help! [05:10] semitones, no problem! what did you do? [05:14] I just had to restart and enter bios setup a few times [05:14] I don't know if I changed anything really [05:14] it's installing lubuntu right now [05:15] I'm trying to convince my dad that lubuntu will be easier for my aunt to use than windows 98 [05:18] what does your aunt need to do? [05:19] type letters and print them, as far as I can tell [05:19] no internet [05:20] well libre office can do good then right? [05:21] yeah [05:21] he thinks that she'll run into problems and nobody where she lives will know how to fix them [05:26] you can fix it though? [05:26] semitones, ssh, remote desktop? [05:40] no internet :p [05:40] but yeah I could help them over the phone [05:46] who doesnt have internet [05:54] how can i tell if i'm running unity or the older version? [05:54] ['04rfvg [05:55] system [05:55] about ubuntu [05:57] quiXotic, open a terminal and type: [05:58] lsb_release -a [05:58] or just hit system about ubuntu lol [05:59] but hes running unity most likely [05:59] system is not an option [05:59] if he has tool bar on right its unity lol [05:59] left [05:59] w/e [06:00] but i was gonna let him figure that out! [06:00] :) [06:01] okay i did and it said no LSB modules are available [06:02] and no i dont have the tool bar on the left [06:02] trying to get the launcher working, mainly [06:03] " lsb_release -a" without quotes [06:03] whats not working? [06:04] did, same msg [06:04] the launcher is the only thing i've noticed/wanted. looking at it on the ubuntu site [06:05] whats your desktop look like now [06:06] task bar is on the bottom, show desktop button the left side, workspaces/trash on right [06:07] top sections looks the same as other screens ive seen [06:12] do a screen shot and email it to me. [06:12] ill tell you alot [06:12] philipballew@ubuntu.com [06:13] oops, just logged out and saw ubuntu classic was selected, selected unity and now i have what i want :) [06:13] thats good! [06:14] unity blows [06:14] i like it [06:14] actually i like it a lot better [06:14] and ive seen it for about 35 seconds [06:17] i like how i can accsess the terminal quicklt [06:20] so do i [06:20] i hit a button [06:20] on docky [06:22] i just used ctrl alt t [06:22] but then again i love my keyboard shortcuts [08:32] has anyone ever herd of a way where i can power things on and off via my computer [08:33] like my lamp next to my computer, i wanna turn that on and off via my desktop [09:51] Running Natty on X86-64. I must have deleted my home folder, this is the scenario. It was an ordinary file between my other files not hidden not ./ so I thought this is strange an I deleted It, and that is where my woes began, Logging in I get this:-1st screen:- could not update ICEauthority File/home/user//.ICEauthority. 2nd screen:- There is a problem with the configuration server (usr/lib/libconf2-4/gconfig-sanity-check-2exited with status 256) 3rd [09:51] screen _:- nautilus could not create the following required folders:/home/user/desctop/home/user/nautilus, Before running nautilus, please create these folders, or set permissions such that nautilus can create them. Help would be greatly appreciated. [09:54] ina_, I can't really answer your questions, sorry... You might want to ask in #ubuntu, there's a lot of knowledgeable folks there. One problem I cannot seem to solve though. I have an Acer Aspire laptop and a 17" monitor attached, in portrait mode for documents. When I start the laptop, the menu offering win7 or ubuntu opens on laptop screen and when I click on ubunti it changes to 2nd monitot and laptop stays blank. I went into monitor settings and got resolution and orientation on [15:03] 2nd monitor [15:03] correct but the laptop remains stubbornly blank. nothing I change seems to make a difference. Any ideas?
