chaituGreetings All. Am trying to change my desktop theme and when I choose a new theme, I dont get a option to apply it. Can someone help me please?02:01

negaduckchaitu: Sorry how are you changing the theme?03:02
chaitusystem settings03:03
chaitusystem settings -> advanced tab ->desktop theme details03:03
negaduckRight ok what did you change?03:04
negaduckchaitu: Just clicked on one of the options at the top or you went into more detail ?03:05
chaituonce i click on desktop theme details, it gives me new window which shows the current theme03:06
chaituthen I click on drop down box and try changing it03:06
chaituit doesnt change anything03:06
negaduckchaitu: Ah what version of KDE are you using?03:07
chaituone sec nega03:07
chaitunegaduck, *03:07
chaitu4.3.503:07
negaduckoh03:07
negaduckoh my :)03:07
chaitulol i know..pretty old03:08
negaduckOk I'm using KDE 4.7 so I wouldn't be able to confirm or deny that03:08
negaduckare you on LTS?03:08
chaituumnn sorry..whats lts?03:08
chaitulet me look up03:09
chaituI know these silly questions might be irritating03:09
chaituoh long term support?03:10
chaitukde.org does not show any03:12
chaituah wb lol..thought you were around03:12
chaituI don't see anything for 4.3.5 lts on kde.org..03:13
negaduck!LTS03:13
ubottuLTS means Long Term Support. LTS versions of Ubuntu will be supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server. The current LTS version of Ubuntu is !Lucid (Lucid Lynx 10.04)03:13
negaduckDNS died03:13
chaituyeah..I dont think its supported.03:14
chaituwill download latest version of this distro and install it I guess03:14
chaitunegaduck: one more question please. what do you do for your fonts on linux? I mean, browsing is not the same as on windows...is there any distro which has nice fonts in linux too? does kubuntu have any fix?03:15
negaduck!fonts03:15
ubottuFont installation basics here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FontInstallHowto - No fonts in Flash? Install "msttcorefonts" (from !Multiverse), "gsfonts", and "gsfonts-x11". No fonts in MPlayer? see !MPlayer. For the official ubuntu font, see: http://font.ubuntu.com/03:15
negaduckchaitu: Might help if you have a /home partition for the jump03:16
chaituwow looks like you guys have seen lot of newbies. nice thanks a ton03:16
chaituI have home../home03:16
negaduckchaitu: is it on it's own partition?03:18
chaitunegaduck: once you implement whats written in that file, will fonts on browsers and websites look like windows?03:18
chaituyes negaduck03:18
chaitu17 gb of home03:18
negaduckchaitu: Wonderful :)03:19
negaduck not so much a newbie :)03:19
chaitulol I played with this for sometime..like installing awn and those desktop effects apps..other than that..not much03:20
negaduckNeat how have you liked the playground so far?03:21
chaituI like it...its just that my browsing experience is not up to the mark..like how it looks on linux..03:22
negaduckchaitu: try chromium when you upgrade. It pulls in it's own fonts and so on03:22
negaduckbut people like tweaking their own fonts alot03:22
chaituafter trying all that apps about desktop effects, I dont think I want them once I download the latest version of kbuntu..am good with default03:22
chaitui see03:23
chaitunegaduck: if i can ask you one more question, I was suggested that we dont need /home partition and one large / will do just fine. is that true? I mean..every linux book has /home while installing that I read03:25
rwwchaitu: I don't have a separate /home and have never regretted this, so...03:26
chaituI see..but wouldnt your / folder has somany folders and confuse you with folders you create? like /pics, /music and so on?03:27
chaituhave* heh03:28
negaduckchaitu: You don't need it but I don't see a downside to having one03:28
negaduckchaitu: If you have a single / partition you will still have a /home directory03:29
rwwchaitu: It looks the same either way. The difference with a separate /home is that /home goes to a different partition underneath. Pictures still go in /home/username/Pictures if there isn't a separate /home partition...03:29
negaduckit looks the same. Just if you format you lose all the data in your /home as well03:29
rwwI think negaduck explained that better ;)03:29
chaituooh..I get it. cool03:29
chaituand 10 gb for / is good enough, right?03:30
negaduckShould be03:32
negaduckI've never had mine that large and I've never run out of space03:32
negaduckand I install a ridiculous amount of rubbish03:32
chaituI have mine as 5 now but it says no space to upgrade to the latest version03:32
chaitu78% used..am not sure if all those desktop effect progs I installed did not take much space..03:33
chaituaight guys. I will download and install the latest version and come back.03:39
chaituThanks a bunch for your help. You guys really help newbies like me try things out.03:40
chaitucheers03:40
negaduckCheers!04:02

gigenieks5. step:09:52
gigenieks"sudo grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sdX"09:52
gigenieksi should put sda OR sdc??09:52
gigenieks...09:57
yofelgigenieks: usually you put grub into the MBR of the device that's used as boot disk in BIOS10:00
yofelusually sda10:00
yofelor put it on sdc and mark that as boot disk in BIOS10:00
yofelI personally am happier with grub and the windows boot manager being on 2 different disks10:01

gigeniekssudo grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sdX10:03
gigeniekssdX = whatever I choose10:03
gigenieks?10:03
yofelwell, you can use /dev/sdc - but then make sure you use  that disk as first boot disk in your BIOS boot order10:05
gigenieksI dont get it I have both Kubuntu and Windows on 1 hdd10:06
gigenieksso i need to set that hdd10:06
gigenieksin bios first10:06
gigenieksanyway!10:06
gigenieksright?10:07
Shirakawasunagigenieks: you'll find out soon enough with guess and check which one is right :).  You can edit grub dynamically by hitting 'e' when grub loads, if you fail and need to change sda to sdc10:09
Shirakawasunagigenieks: the basic idea is that you install windows, then boot to a linux live CD, then chroot and grub install.  Follow a good guide for doing the chroot and grub install.  Gentoo and archlinux have excellent docs on this, though they may not apply to grub2.10:10

ubuntu4shaneok, this is very frustrating, I rebooted, after 5 or 6 or 7 days running, and my keyboard isn't loaded?? or something, I can't type, and mouse isn't activated either.  IT isn't hardware because keyboard works in grub menu, I tried booting older kernel, recovery nothing works14:22

LinkmasterI've been trying to monkey around with GRUB to make it show a booting option for my newly created Gentoo installation[made in a chroot environment], though I didn't install GRUB using the gentoo. I run 'update-grub' and it 'sees' the gentoo installation, but when I reboot, I don't have an option to boot into it.17:04
yofelLinkmaster: are you sure you updated the grub.cfg of the grub installation that you boot with?17:06
Linkmasteryofel:  I believe so..I don't really play with grub too much, so I'm not exactly sure17:07
ib-mobile_something is wrong with configuring printers on my system.  When I try to add a printer, I'm only given they type other and it doesn't seem to do anything.  I've had printing working on this machine before so I'm not sure what happened.  I'm trying to setup a remote cups printer17:08
yofelLinkmaster: check if it's listed in grub.cfg, if it is then you should see it on boot17:09
genii-aroundLinkmaster: I suppose it also might matter where you chrooted to and did the install... like, a subdir in some partition, or the root of a partition, etc17:09
ib-mobile_I'm thinking reinstalling the print configuration tool may be the answer, but I'm not sure what package that would be17:09
Linkmastergenii-around: I know I was chrooted in the correct place, I had an empty partition, and mounted it via  /mnt/gentoo  and I did all my work from  /mnt/gentoo17:10
Linkmasteryofel: this is my partition setup: http://pastebin.com/zmBUs97f17:10
yofelok, but your grub installation with have it's prefix set to /boot from ubuntu, so you need to update the grub.cfg *there*17:11
LinkmasterI have an unfinished windows on sda1, sda5 is gentoo, sda6 is  /  for kubuntu, sda7 is  /home  for kubuntu, and sda8 is my swap17:11
yofelthe grub setup in gentoo will probably be ignored unless you run grub-install from there17:12
dlpI am having some seriously funky issues with KDE and XDMCP.17:12
=== dlp is now known as [dlp]
Linkmasteralright...let me mount gentoo, chroot in there, and install grub from there. Hopefully it won't bork kubuntu, since I doubt I'll have internet in gentoo until I set it up17:12
yofelLinkmaster: wait, can you run update-grub in KUBUNTU first?17:13
yofeland then pastebin /boot/grub/grub.cfg?17:13

Linkmaster^Thats why I know its there, and thats also why I'm so confused, since on restart, grub will show the stupid windows, but not gentoo17:17
yofelhm, the os-prober section only has XP though in grub.cfg17:18
[dlp]http://imagebin.org/16498317:19
LinkmasterI see that..how do I go about adding gentoo into it?17:20
[dlp]Interesting thing is... it flips at some point while KDE is loading.17:20
yofelno idea how os-prober manager other linux systems, or /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober manages it17:20

[dlp]Anyone ever seen anything like it?17:21
Linkmasteryofel: oh wonderful, I'll get to it...17:21
[dlp]Mouse input is fine (i.e. responds to where things "should" be).17:25
Linkmasterhow do I find the UUID of a partition?17:25
[dlp]All plasmoid contents appear inverted.17:26
[dlp]Linkmaster: sudo blkid -o list17:27
yofelLinkmaster: 'sudo blkid' will tell you17:29
LinkmasterYeah, I found it17:29
Linkmasteryofel: http://pastebin.com/GcYX0Q6E17:31
yofelthe kernel an initrd images are wrong, the search line probably too17:32
Linkmasteryofel: I don't know how to properly edit those..17:36
yofelme neither, though the UUID on the search line should probably match the root one, and the kernel and initrd images are the ones from gentoo17:39
yofelif you did something wrong with the gentoo kernel setup it might explain why os-prober fails to add it17:39
draikHello everyone18:00
draikI had an issue with my 10.10 upgrade to 11.04 and lost my configs.18:00
draikI can't recall how I got HDMI audio to work.18:00
draikI have HDMI through nVidia driver and would like audio from the same output. Would someone be able to tell me where I could look? My Google-fu appears to be lacking since I can't find the article that helped me last time (in 10.10)18:02
draik!hdmi18:04
BluesKajdraik, open alsamixer and make sure the digital ctrl is turned up18:05
draikBluesKaj: When I get into alsamixer, HDMI isn't the default card. When I choose my HDMI card, S/PDIF (all 4 of them) are set to "00"18:08
BluesKaj00 means they are turned on ,18:09
BluesKajwhich player are you using ?18:09
draikWhen looking at PCM, I notice that I have 01-03, 01-07, 01-08, and 01-09. I recall that 01-07 was the one that I need.18:09
draikI'm trying Pandora and VLC18:10
BluesKajVLC works for me but I use coax digital out for my audio out , no hdmi inputs on my receiver, and I use dvi to hdmi adapter cable to my tv . VLC/tools/preferences/ audio output settings have to be matched to the dev=X settings in phonon18:13
draikBluesKaj: Perfect. Now I have VLC playing audio. Now I have to look into Pandora.18:15
tdnSometimes, after a while audio just stops working. Both in vlc, smplayer, audacious, Flash, etc. A reboot fixes this, but how can I solve the issue? Is there any way to get sound back without rebooting?18:16
tdnI use Kubuntu 11.0418:16
draiktdn: I recall having that issue back in 10.04. IIRC, there is a file you can alter to save your config after rebooting.18:17
tdndraik, the alsamixer state, maybe?18:18
draikAh, yeah. That's what my search just came up with right now.18:18
tdndraik, I was hoping to have sound back without rebooting.18:18
tdndraik, I havent changed anything in alsamixer though.18:19
BluesKajtdn, setup alsmixer sothat your audio works to your satisfaction , then  open another terminal and do,  sudo alsactl store18:19
tdnBluesKaj, but why does the sound suddenly stop working?18:21
tdnBluesKaj, also, I am not sure this is a mixer problem. For example, if I try to play a video with sound in it with mplayer, mplayer stops video playback, because it cannot find audio dev.18:22
BluesKajtdn, that command should store your alsamixer settings , and if you have pulseaudio installed that could be the culprit18:22
tdn[AO OSS] audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: No such file or directory18:22
tdnBluesKaj, I have pulseaudio. That is the default, right?18:22
tdnhttp://paste.adora.dk/P2111.txt <- list of installed '*pulse*' packages18:23
BluesKajyes, but unless you have a fancy pci soundcard , ot use pavucontrol with PA , it's mostly redundant18:23

draikBluesKaj: I think you solved my Pandora issue with that one.18:24
tdnI do not know what pavucontrol is. Appearently not installed.18:24
tdnYou think PA is redundant?18:24
draikWHen I got into KMix, I see that my Playback Streams is set to "ALSA plug-in [Pandora]: ALSA Playback"18:24
BluesKajdraik ,I haven't used pandorsa ...dunno anything about it18:24
BluesKajpandora18:24
BluesKajtdn, PA=pulseaudio ..it's just asoundserver that depends on other backends to run18:26
BluesKajit runs as a layer on top of alsa... I don't need it18:26
tdnBluesKaj, ok. Can you play sound in flash while listening to music in audacious and viewing video in mplayer, etc?18:27
BluesKajtdn, don't think so...never tried that because my setup doesn't require that18:29

tdnBluesKaj, I still do not understand why my dsp device disappears: [AO OSS] audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: No such file or directory18:33
tdnHow does this happen?18:33

tdnBu tright now I would like to just have sound back :)18:34
tdnBluesKaj, no changes to config nor updates installed.18:34
tdnBluesKaj, it just happens once in a while. Sometimes while watching a movie.18:35
tdnBluesKaj, it is extremely annoying.18:35

stevethepirate_here is my question (btw, ya'll are the same) - I am looking in  /etc/init.d/plymouth   and I have a question about upstart-job.sh and its use of plymouth19:48
stevethepirate_INITSCRIPT="$(basename "$0")"19:49
stevethepirate_does this line store the value of the name of the script that called plymouth in INITSCRIPT?19:50
yofelsince you run initscript themselves, that would return 'basename /etc/init.d/plymouth' i.e. 'plymouth'19:51
yofelsince that's what you want to run19:51
Picistevethepirate_: yes19:51
yofelupstart-job.sh then takes care of starting the plymouth service as defined in plymouth.conf19:51
Picistevethepirate_: as you can see there are a number of scripts in /etc/init.d that are all symlinked to /lib/init/upstart-job19:51
yofeler, /etc/init/plymouth.conf19:51
stevethepirate_Is this for all files in init.d?19:53
stevethepirate_they are all symlinked?19:53
yofelfor all files that are symlinked, not all are19:53
Picistevethepirate_: Take a look yourself.19:53
