=== emma is now known as em [07:20] morning all [07:21] \o AlanBell [07:59] hello all [08:24] Morning === denny- is now known as denny [09:32] morning everyone. [09:33] morning [09:33] morning MooDoo [09:35] purchasing a external cd drive today...hope they are cheapish :D [09:42] MooDoo: I have a liteon one that was about 20 quid. [09:42] StevenR: where did you get that one from? [09:42] (usb, dvd re-writer actually) [09:42] ebuyer iirc [09:43] http://www.ebuyer.com/172850-liteon-etdu108-8x-dvd-rom-usb-external-slim-optical-drive-retail-box-etdu108-01 [09:44] it's usb powered with a standard A -> mini-B cable [09:44] ok thanks :D [09:44] :) [09:45] not very happy with ebuyer/city-link at the moment [09:45] hi [09:46] GirlyGirl: hi [09:46] mfraz74: how come? [09:46] hi GirlyGirl [09:46] MooDoo: ordered a hard drive yesterday for delivery today, checked earlier and something has rescheduled it for monday instead [09:46] mfraz74: have you contacted them? [09:47] tried to contact city-link, but was on hold for ages. ebuyer aren't open today [09:47] mfraz74: how far is the city-link depot from you, couldn't you go pick it up? [09:48] about an hour away and no car today [09:48] booooo [09:48] Taxi! :) [09:48] it may not be at the depot [09:48] it is at the depot [09:49] what time did it arrive at the depot? [09:49] arrived thereat 6.20 got rescheduled 2 hours later [09:50] it says "Thank you for your rescheduling request." [09:50] yeah, goods are loaded onto delivery vans at around 5:30-6:00 [09:50] so the lorry didn't arrive until it was too late [09:50] yes, you've paid for saturday delivery and not got it. i've had this kind of thing from citylink [09:51] the website makes look like i've rescheduled the delivery [09:55] mfraz74, the depot staff helpfully rescheduled delivery on your behalf. [09:55] * GirlyGirl is deciding whether to spend money repairing her car bodywork or buying herself a nice new laptop [09:56] new laptop of course! [09:57] I'd go for the car [09:58] I think I'll take the laptop, since the car moves like it should (except for a bit of constant steering) [09:59] GirlyGirl: what's going to be the cheaper option? and is your life at stake in the car ;) [09:59] or maybe balancing for the car and a laptop [10:01] laptops are SOO last millennium. tablets are where it's at! [10:01] MooDoo: both cost around the same.. no the car is safe, just dented, I smashed it pretty bad [10:02] directhex: nah not so interested in a tablet [10:02] GirlyGirl: you're not also known as Rowan Atkinson are you? [10:02] mfraz74: Why would that be lol [10:02] GirlyGirl: have you seen what he's done to his car? [10:03] mfraz74: yes, he rightedoff his mclaren f1. [10:04] nah mine's not so bad! and no f1 for me [11:31] * penguin42 yawns [11:39] * GirlyGirl thinks penguins are lazy [11:41] and stuffed with herring. [11:41] GirlyGirl: I'm not going to argue with that [11:43] given it's nearly 1pm, I've been up less than an hour and am still in dressing gown :-) [11:45] penguin42: You must be used to it, the south pole is always dark at this time of the year [11:45] GirlyGirl: Nod [11:45] GirlyGirl: Although Manchester isn't quite that bad [11:50] * popey is also still in dressing gown :D [11:50] i'm going to have a shower, i think === odysseus is now known as Guest38439 [13:08] for all the electronicy type people out there, would it be possible to make a magnetic USB charging cable? [13:08] you know like the cables you get on laptops which are held in magnetically so if someone trips over the cable it just falls out [13:08] not really. usb requires more of a contact than that [13:09] thought it might do, but I wondered if the requirements would be lower for just power with no data [13:11] usb doesn't work that way. [13:11] then it's not usb :) [13:12] the whole point is that usb is universal; you can plug any usb device into it. If this magic socket requires shorter plugs or something then it ain't usb ;) [13:12] spose :p [13:12] what you could do is make a very short usb-to-azelphursb connector, and then put an azelphursb socket on your laptop [13:13] look inside a usb plug. power happens on the 2 long lines - ground on the left, +5v on the right [13:14] also, liisten to directhex, since he has the skillz [13:18] hehe [13:18] sounds like it would be easier to bypass the usb charging and just go straight to the battery [13:25] http://ask.slashdot.org/story/11/08/06/0127201/The-Mathematics-of-Lawn-Mowing [13:26] * penguin42 hands jacobw a goat [13:26] * jacobw nutures the goat [13:27] i'll definately be following the research next time i mow a lawn [13:37] yes.. move in a circle from the inside out.. [13:38] except adjusted to non-circular laws :) [13:38] lawns* [13:51] Any enGB translation admins around? [14:28] hi [14:28] hi GirlyGirl [14:29] hi GirlyGirl [18:02] Aloha [18:15] [Laura Czajkowski] Ubuntu Ireland August Geeknic - http://www.lczajkowski.com/2011/08/06/ubuntu-ireland-august-geeknic/ [18:15] [Laura Czajkowski] One Week to OggCamp See you there - http://www.lczajkowski.com/2011/08/06/one-week-to-oggcamp-see-you-there/ [19:21] hi [19:22] hello [19:22] * popey hugs Myrtti [19:35] How much is a london olympic ticket going to be [19:35] all gone [19:36] AlanBell: Really, what was the pricing [19:36] aproximate [19:36] huge range, from £20 to £x000 [19:37] where are you coming from? [19:37] I'm not interested in the Olympic ticket, was just curious [19:38] because the UK allocation was done in a lottery, other country allocations might have some left [19:40] iirc GirlyGirl is in Scotland [19:40] So probably more expensive to get to (that) London from there than from say Paris [19:41] look at the logo here http://www.aftemplates.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Free-Expense-Report-Template.png [19:41] haha [19:41] excellent [19:41] http://www.aftemplates.com/free-expense-report-template.html [19:41] cmes from there [19:44] not sure who to report it to [19:44] why report it? [19:44] ubuntu logo [19:45] yes [19:45] why report it? [19:45] looks like a perfectly good use of it [19:45] fair enough [19:45] I'd rather they used the up to date one :D [19:45] maybe we should ask them to do that [19:45] :) [19:46] * czajkowski is tryng to find a template for expenses online [19:46] I just use a spreadsheet [19:46] with your nice new spreadsheet application [19:46] Microsoft Excel? :) [19:46] heh [19:47] I nearly typed "I just use an excel spreadsheet" :D [19:47] popey: Office for Windows or for Mac? [19:47] windows [19:48] so you need another copy for each of your macs ;) [19:48] ooo pizza here [19:48] good timing dominos man! [19:54] * mgdm shakes his fist at popey [19:54] Now I want Dominos [19:55] * GirlyGirl asks opey for her share [19:58] * StevenR has chicken, peppers and pasta :D [20:28] Evening [20:29] hi [20:29] hullo [20:29] lo [20:32] * daubers has mended the clothes drawers, thus completing his manly duties for the day [20:36] *sigh* Why do people assume _everyone_ uses MS Outlook [20:37] "Please use the “vote” facility above to let us know by answering yes or no." arrived in my gmail [20:38] The real comedy ones are when they attempt to recall messages they shouldn't have sent [20:40] Also, Apple inverting the scroll motion in Lion is blasted annoying [20:40] Heh [20:41] Also! Might finally get to meet the people at Reading Hackspace tomorrow \o/ [20:44] Cool [20:51] * StevenR has painted part of a ceiling [20:51] StevenR: \o/ [20:52] daubers: without a) getting paint in my hair b) destroying the ceiling c) falling off the ladder and d) smashing anything [20:52] StevenR: \o/ \o/ [20:53] a few more coats and it should blend in nicely [20:53] StevenR: but now the furniture is all covered in paint? [20:53] StevenR: I watched my dd and his friend plaster a roof once by using stilts, that was immensely impressive unti they tripped up :) [20:53] MartijnVdS: nope (bathroom, so easy to wipe down the few splatters) [20:53] daubers: eep. [21:25] stupid osx [21:28] lol [22:18] hey guys, having a weird trouble installing 11.04 on a core 2 duo... "boot error" from the BIOS [22:18] using a USB flash drive [22:18] (no CD drive) [22:18] I know the USB flash drive works, because my laptop boots into it... I'm just baffled as to what's up [22:19] is there a BIOS thing I should be changing that could be locking it out? [22:22] according to this, it should be okay (however that does mention 8.04 though, not 11.04): http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/dg35ec/sb/CS-029515.htm [22:26] HazRPG: are you camping for oggcamp? [22:26] AlanBell: Hopefully yeah :) [22:27] AlanBell: If its still okay with you? [22:27] yup [22:27] can you send a mail to alanbell@ubuntu.com [22:28] what shall I put in said mail? [22:28] actually, never mind, you are on the list already [22:29] oh the oggcamp list? [22:29] yeah I have a ticket already :) [22:29] hmm? [22:29] the "people in my garden" list [22:29] oh ^_^ [22:30] AlanBell: you got many staying at yours? [22:30] I know me and brobostigon are :) [22:31] (if I haven't already, again much thanks for offering to put me up in your garden :)) [22:32] gosh, looks like 7 :-/ [22:32] think I am full [22:32] AlanBell: you did take me off the list? [22:32] Wow! Got enough space for all that? [22:32] dutchie: yes [22:32] cool :) [22:32] well :( really [22:32] HazRPG: maybe [22:33] 6 for saturday/sunday [22:33] AlanBell: all sorted on the networking front? (I heard mention about worries about wireless for the conf?) [22:33] StevenR: that is popey's thing really [22:33] apart from the AV Lan [22:34] I see [22:34] Ooo, there's LAN? [22:34] one way or another there will be some wireless [22:34] Should I be bring my laptop with me? [22:34] HazRPG: just a gigabit switch possibly not connected to anything [22:34] AlanBell: hehe. Wireless design is fun :) [22:35] heh, even if we just bridge a few android phones together, and use them as AP's ... there will be wireless! [22:35] yup [22:35] reasonable mobile broadband there, we tested in the rooms [22:35] \o/ [22:35] and kick ass wireless N broadband in my garden [22:35] my laptop is so going to be made fun of so much this weekend :( [22:36] 34MB down \o/ [22:36] AlanBell: FTTC or VM ? [22:36] FTTC [22:36] wow score! \o/ [22:36] * StevenR has that too [22:36] and if it is totally dry, power to the tents :) [22:36] better down then me! [22:37] (I has 8Mb down) [22:37] otherwise charging stuff indoors [22:37] cool :) [22:37] AlanBell: How many people are you getting in your garden? [22:37] going to need to dismantle a 14foot diameter trampoline on the friday and reassemble Sunday morning [22:37] penguin42: 7! [22:38] * penguin42 imagines something like out of a refugee camp [22:38] little bit concerned about space [22:38] Don't worry, I'm only little... so I won't be taking up much space :) [22:38] AlanBell: If you give them strong enough coffee they won't need to sleep [22:39] if needs be, I'll be outside with an umbrella tied around my sleeping bag :P [22:39] could bring my 4 man tent, which can easily house about 6 skinny people
