RoAkSoAxkirkland: ping?00:08
=== zz_ng_ is now known as ng_
KM0201riddle me this:  My NAS, I can access the samba share no problem at all.  I can reboot the NAS 50x, no problem... Give it a second, and I can get right back on my shares... the second I reboot my Laptop (running lubuntu 11.04).. i can't access the share... i can browse to it, then I get failed to retrieve list from server, specified location is not mounted, but when i ssh my server, the location is mounted01:36
swimfinsdns?01:38
KM0201i honestly don't know.01:39
KM0201clarify your question, and i'll try to answer it01:39
swimfinsdid you try accessing via ip address or dns name?01:39
KM0201um, i just go to Networks, Navigate to my Share, and then click on the folderr, and i get the message above, so I assume, DNS name is the answer you're looking for01:40
KM0201the strange thing is.. it sees the server, and it lets me double click the server name, but as soon as i try to access a folder, i get the not mounted, etc.. error01:40
KM0201how would i access the share via IP?01:41
swimfinsso when you reboot your laptop, all other clients can't access?01:41
KM0201i've honestly not checked other clients, when I reboot my Laptop, i can no longer access the samba share, even though i can browse to the "Top" folder, then i get the message its not mounted01:42
KM0201lemme see if one of the other machines can real quick.01:42
swimfinson ubuntu, I suppose that you could do the equivalent of a mapped drive for samba access01:42
KM0201how would i do that?01:42
swimfinswhen does it let you back on, or does it at all?01:42
KM0201it doesn't01:43
KM0201thats the thing01:43
swimfinsI'm not sure, one sec01:43
KM0201ok.. appreciate the help by the way01:43
KM0201lemme go see if i can get on from another pc, brb01:43
swimfinsokay.01:44
KM0201now this is weird, all of a sudden, its letting me on the share01:44
swimfinsstrange01:45
KM0201i bet mmy server has been on like 15min01:45
KM0201*sorry, laptop01:45
swimfinsto see what shares are available, you would use the smbclient command.01:45
swimfins/usr/bin/smbclient -L host01:46
KM0201on the server, or host?01:46
swimfinsafter a reboot, try by hostname and then by ip address01:47
swimfinsyou might just need to add an entry to /etc/hosts01:47
swimfinson the laptop01:47
KM0201Connection to host failed (Error NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME01:48
swimfinsit could also be that it took that long in order for the nas to advertize01:48
KM0201i just got that, but i can browse the share no problem01:48
KM020120min?01:48
swimfinsno, it shouldn't... what kind of nas?01:49
KM0201it's just a box i built01:49
swimfinsok01:49
swimfinsdid you try with the ip address?01:49
KM0201so /usr/bin/smbclient -L ipaddress    right?01:50

KM0201session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE01:50
elz89Anyone here know anything of fuppes. I have used it as part of FreeNAS, but now I run ubuntu on almost everything in my home network, but I can't get 'fuppes' working from the GetDeb Apps PPA? I'm not sure what information I would need to provide in order to help diagnose the problem. I have tried looking for log files but no luck.01:50
ScottKelz89: You should ask someone from getdeb.  Their package aren't done by the Ubuntu developers.01:52
KM0201swimfins: now why would i get that error, if i'm not having trouble browsing/usign the share.. once it finally got on, i can watch a movie on the share, etc.01:52
swimfinsnot sure, I just figured that should work.  Does your client have an lmhosts file?01:53
swimfinswhat client is it?01:53
KM0201it should i would imagine, where is that located on ubuntU?01:53
swimfinssorry, kind of rusty here, one second.01:55
KM0201swimfins: someone juts suggested something to me, i wanna see if thats part of the issue, brb, gonna start my laptop.01:57
swimfinsany luck?02:01
elz89ScottK: Do they have a channel?02:01
KM0201now that was interesting02:01
elz89found it :-)02:01
KM0201someone in another channel, suggested it might be because I have Guest set to "YES" rather than requiring someone to log on to the share (password/username)02:02
KM0201so i edited smb.conf, changed that to no, restarted samba on the server, then restarted my laptp02:02
KM0201and i'll be darned, i got on in 5sec02:02
swimfinsexcellent02:02
KM0201but.. why would tha tdo that?02:02
swimfinsbecause it was confused as to how you wanted to login02:03
swimfinsjust a guess02:03
KM0201hm02:03
KM0201any idea on what i could change, to allow me "Guest" login? is that sometihng in smb.conf02:03
Patrickdksomething with you somehow02:03
PatrickdkI have guest in many shares, and it works ok02:03
KM0201Patrickdk: yeah.. i'm not disputing that02:03
swimfinsboth guest and credentials at the same time?  Is that what I heard?02:04
Patrickdkyep02:04
Patrickdkon mine, users get read/write, guest gets read only02:05
* elz89 thinks #getdeb is a little too quiet to get an answer before bed :-(02:06
jmarsdenKM0201: If you do something like      egrep -v '^#|^;|^ *$' /etc/samba/smb.conf |pastebinit -b http://paste.ubuntu.com      others could see your smb.conf and might have more clue what you are doing differently?02:08

KM0201http://pastebin.com/mRGsRpVN02:10
KM0201loose the last \  sorry02:10
KM0201jmarsden: when i set guest ok=   to no.. it seems to have resolved the problem, but then of course, everyone needs a password to access the share.02:11
jmarsdenAre both server and client in the same workgroup (MSHOME) ?02:12
KM0201negative02:12
KM0201at least i don't think my client is in HOME02:13
KM0201how would i check the work group my laptop is under?02:13
KM0201nothing revvealing in smb.conf?02:16
jmarsdenwell, I don't like the force user stuff, but I don't think that should be causing the issue with guests...02:16
KM0201jmarsden: i just went off a "samba walkthrough" i read, and it said to use that.02:17
KM0201so i did.02:17
jmarsdenWhy do people so often follow random documents from the web...?  man smb.conf, read the official Samba docs, learn this stuff, *then* set it up when you know what you are doing :)02:18
KM0201jmarsden: well, unfortunately, i was kinda pushed into learning ubuntu server, so..02:20
jmarsdenSo now setlle down and take your time and learn it right :)02:20
KM0201i probably will, i might even buy a NAS solution, i didn't like the idea of that, but maybe its a better idea.02:20

lickalott*yes?02:29
KM0201ok, well yes, i know thats there.. that seems to be what was causing my original problem.. i had it set to Yes, and it would take like 20min for my laptop to have access to the share.02:29

KM0201brb02:31

lickalottjust stop and restart the process/service02:31
KM0201lickalott: well, the problem would manifest itself, when i rebooted my laptop02:32

Delerium_Xptical, And a a DNS domain pointing to your static IP?03:25
elz89I am in a similar situation to Xptical, but I don't have a static ip. Instead i have my domain forwarded to a dyndns address.03:27
XpticalGodaddy has a single A record pointing to my IP and a CNAME for www pointing to @ (or the a-record)03:27
Delerium_Xptical, And this server is at home?  If so, be sure your ISP is not blocking some ports03:28
XpticalIt's at home, but it's a business connection.  ATM, I think the only thing blocked is outbound SMTP03:29
Xpticalfor obvious resons03:29

XpticalBut a simple phone call will open that port03:29
Delerium_Indeed, Xptical, so, maybe you should setup a simple website at first to sea if DNS / IP works well03:29

jane--hi, if i have a domain withsome registrar like godaddy.com and i want to shift to a new local registrar in my place (after or before a year) is it possible?07:04
jmarsdenjane--: Not exactly a ubuntu-server question, but yes, you can transfer domains from one registrar to another.  Exact process depends on the registrars concerned, but it's not supposed to be difficult to do.07:06
jane--jmarsden how will the new registrar confirm that iam a legitimate user? and how the old registrar be satisfied that its me who changed the domain registrar?07:08
jmarsdenjane--: This is *not* a ubuntu-server question... please try to stay on topic here.  Only you have the login for the old registrars system.  So you can prove you are you to them.  You can set the status of your domain to allow transfer requests, then use your new account at the new registrat to make a transfer request.  Most likely you will get email from the old registrar for extra confirmation you are allowing the change, and then... it07:11
jmarsden happens.07:11
jmarsdenAll the details vary, depending on what "security" measures the two (mainly the old) registrar have put in place.07:12

_johnnycan anyone tell me how disk size works in a software raid 5 (mdadm)? say i buy another disk and want to add it. if it's the same model i'd think nothing of it, just wondering.. if it's a differend brand and the size is slightlight higher/lower than the others, what would happen?12:30
patdk-lapit would or wouldn't work :)12:32
patdk-lapit must always be the same or larger12:32
patdk-lapso if your paranoid about that, you should normally subtract 1% or so of the disk size when you create the partition mdadm uses12:33
RoyK_johnny: if it's smaller, it won't work. if it's larger, it will work12:33
RoyK_johnny: but new drives have standardised sizes - older/smaller drives may vary a bit12:34
_johnnythanks guys12:34
_johnnyso it would basically just tell me i can't add it12:35
_johnnyright?12:35
_johnnyand similarly if i add a drive which is twice the size, it'd only utilize half of it (short of parititioning etc)12:35
RoyKright12:36
_johnnyok, thanks :)12:36
RoyKalso, if you have a RAID with 1TB drives and replace them with 2TB drives, you should be able to grow the RAID12:36
patdk-lapafter all are replaced12:37
RoyKyeah12:37
patdk-lapuntil they are all replaced, it's just dead space that can't be used (without partitioning), but then if you partition it, you couldn't grow it12:37
RoyKI wouldn't recommend using partitions for a data RAID12:38

_johnnythe reason i'm asking is, i have 5 slots, so offline is not a big deal for me. just wondering if that's how you'd go about replacing (or how _I_'d go about it anyway)13:14
RoyKyou get hotswap chassises for internal mounting (3 x 5 1/4" slots) quite cheap13:14
RoyKand for hotswap to work, you need a sata controller with hotswap abilities13:15
RoyKand hotswap support in the driver..13:16
bernhard1After installing Ubuntu 11.4 server i get errors when booting. I have this issue on several disks (new and old one). It gives errors on the filesystem /boot . rdev/sda1 mountall fsck /boot [344] terminated with status 1 then: cannot write bytes: broke pipe (many times)then it boots to prompt and i can login: So i repair the hd with Knoppix cd. It says the /boot was unmounted not not13:17
bernhard1cleanly. then it repairs. When i repair sda1 with the knoppix cd with the command fsck /dev/sda1 it is fixed. So the server boots fine. But once the server is shutdown once it will startup again with these same message: mountall fsck /boot [344] terminated with status 1 cannot write bytes: broke pipe Any clue how i can fix this ????13:17

_johnnyi haven't even begun to look at raid controllers yet - partially because i have no pci/pci-e support in my current server :p13:24
_johnnyjust finished sync check. no errors. yay13:24
RoyK_johnny: neither pci nor pci-e?13:36
_johnnyit's a small media center. just usb and e-sata13:37

pukeko hi - i have been migrating users to a new ubuntu server -- moved smb.conf and smbpasswd but am having problems connecting as a "user" -- getting check_ntlm_password errors in the logs ... is there some other file i need to migrate ?13:38
RoyK_johnny: not quite your average SC847 :P13:38
RoyKpukeko: can you pastebin the logs, please?13:39
RoyK!pastebin13:39

Doonzhey guys. I have a Hardware Raid Array that was 9tb. I expanded it to 12tb. How do I go about formatting the last 3TB into its own partition. This has to be done through the cli13:41
pukekoif i do a smbpasswd -a and reenter the smb passwd its cool , but i don't want to do that for all my users13:42
RoyKDoonz: if you have an ext[234] filesystem on it, just resize2fs13:42
RoyKDoonz: if you have a partition on it with a filesystem, that partition needs to be extended first13:42
StevenRRoyK: "own partition"13:43
RoyKown?13:44
Doonzyeah13:44
StevenRDoonz: you want a new partition for that 3TB, rather than extending the existing?13:44
DoonzSteven i tried extending using gparted through the live cd13:45
RoyKDoonz: do you have a partition table on that raid?13:45
Doonzand it failed13:45
StevenRfdisk -l /dev/raiddevicenamehere in a pastebin please13:45
Doonzhttp://pastebin.com/8SfFsaUX13:47
StevenRare you using LVM?13:48
Doonznot on that drive13:48
Doonzsda is an lvm drive13:48
RoyKDoonz: you'll need to extend the partition or create a new partition for the new data13:48
RoyKDoonz: that should be possible with parted and possibly with gparted (but as you said, it failed). Before using parted, make sure you have a good backup, in case something goes bad13:49
Doonzyeah im going to have to wait till i get home13:50
Doonzi have a new 12tb array that im going to bring online when the cable get hear so i can make a back up of the current array to it13:50
ScottKelz89: No idea.14:27
sw0rdfishis this the best way to join two .avi files in a vps, guys?14:29
sw0rdfishhttp://ubuntuhowtos.com/howtos/merge_avi_files_with_mencoder14:29
sw0rdfishusing mencoder?14:29
bericHello. I need help with remastering the installation. I need to have sun-java6-jdk preinstalled but can't find a decent way to enable the partner repository. Can anyone tell me how to do it ?14:29
RoyKsw0rdfish: I guess both mencoder and ffmpeg could do the job14:38
sw0rdfishRoyK, well when I googled "merging .avi files ubuntu" mencoder showed up at the top and it looks fairly simple to use :)14:39
RoyKmencoder is a bit more userfriendly than ffmpeg, yes14:41

josePhoenixHello all15:16
sw0rdfishhi15:17
josePhoenixHow can I install PHP without installing apache2? I tried --no-install-recommends but it still wants to install apache215:17
sw0rdfishI think sudo apt-get install php5 should do it15:18
sw0rdfish and do you really want to avoid installing apache2?15:18
sw0rdfishjosePhoenix, ^^15:18
josePhoenixYes, I'm not using apache215:18
josePhoenixWhen I try apt-get install php5 it says it will also install "apache2-mpm-prefork apache2-utils apache2.2-bin apache2.2-common libapache2-mod-php5"15:19
josePhoenixAh, installing php5-cli seems to do it15:23

FreezingColdAnyone know?18:50
josePhoenixHey all19:00
josePhoenixWhat's the most widely used server monitoring software? Something that can restart daemons if they hang, show status, etc19:01
Bilge>hanging daemons19:03
BilgeYou're doing it wrong19:03
josePhoenixWell they haven't done that19:04
BilgeThis isn't #windows-server19:04
josePhoenixBut I'd like to know if they do :P19:04
jmarsdenjosePhoenix: There are many, nagios, zenoss, zabbix, monit ...19:05
josePhoenixjmarsden: I was looking at nagios and monit. Mainly asking here to find out if anyone knew about their relative strengths and shortcomings19:06
josePhoenixHave you used any/all of those?19:06
JanCplus several commercial solutions too19:06
jmarsdenI've used nagios a lot anf zenoss a little, plus some commercial ones.19:07
jmarsdenjosePhoenix: It depends what you already know and what you want to monitor... nagios is a decent place to start for general purpose network monitoring, although learning to configure it can take some time.19:08
StevenRmonitoring is work, too. It's not something you can just install and expect to just work.19:09
josePhoenixI have a kind of unusual setup, where a front-end server proxies to a few different services managed by different users. I was hoping to find some monitoring solution that could bring together status information for the different services and not require me to manage a monolithic config as root19:09
StevenRjosePhoenix: maybe try something like icinga or centreon then (nagios+frontend)19:09
josePhoenixStevenR: naturally. I'm hoping to avoid work later on by doing this work up front :]19:09
StevenRjosePhoenix: exactly :)19:10
* StevenR does alot with monitoring at work19:10
JanCwhich one to use might also depends on whether you need to support certain proprietary OSs etc. ;)19:11
josePhoenixCan I specify the individual services in a user-owned config file, then have nagios load it? Or something along those lines?19:11
StevenRjosePhoenix: icinga and centreon all you to manage the config via the web19:12
StevenRat least centreon certainly does19:12
josePhoenixWell my provisioning script creates a skeleton for each service with some config files, so it would be a good place to put a skeleton config file19:13
josePhoenixthough if users can break the monitoring daemon with bad syntax or something I guess I wouldn't want to load their config files19:14
StevenRjosePhoenix: that's what centreon protects against19:14
StevenRit's quite hard to break it via the web interface, but it does a config check before a restart as well, just to be sure19:15
josePhoenixHmm.. well I'd like to automate it as much as I can19:16
StevenRwe do that too.19:16
StevenRI'm not sure how, but our prov system automatically adds hosts to centreon19:17
josePhoenixReally, I'm just lazy. I don't want to edit things in the web interface if someone adds a gunicorn server that they want to monitor or something19:18
josePhoenixMaybe I can use some shell script and sudoers to keep improper config files from being saved19:20
josePhoenixIt's more of a sanity check than anything. I don't think someone will try to do something malicious with nagios, but I don't want them to break it by accident ;]19:21
StevenRjosePhoenix: script the restart, so it won't restart if the config is wrong19:23
StevenR(nagios can do a check-config-is-sane thing)19:24
josePhoenixhmm this guy sounds like he has it figured out http://www.standalone-sysadmin.com/blog/2009/07/nagios-config/19:24
josePhoenixOkay, I'll start reading up on nagios config files. Fun afternoon xD19:25
josePhoenixThanks for your advice StevenR19:25
