[02:28] after installing ubuntu server 11.4 i get these errors. On reboot the file system /boot is corrupted. When i repair this disk with knoppix cd it says it was uncleanly unmounted. after repair it boots normal. But after a reboot i gives the same error. The error message is Cannot write bytes: pipe error. Basicly it does not unmount /boot correctly. Then i installed Debian to see if it was a [02:28] software issue. But the i get about a similar error. When Debian shuts down it says something like this: cannot unmount file system failed. So it seems it is some sort of same issue.. idears ? [02:53] i'm guessing hardware problem or kernel bug, but you need to check dmesg [06:15] Morning [07:26] morning all [07:48] good morning everyone. [10:20] is nothing sacred? [10:20] and a dog did a poo on my doorstep last night :( [10:20] friend of mine works for a company where _people_ poo on the doorstep regularly [10:21] in east london? [10:21] popey: microsoft cambridge :) [10:21] ? [10:21] not quite sure where he is [10:21] We have people who poo on the walls here in the office [10:21] He hasn't been caught for >4 years now [10:21] (or she?) [10:21] dna testing? [10:22] * MooDoo is going to beat all of you, i'm getting a device in 4 weeks that will poo EVERYWHERE and at ANY TIME [10:22] i thought the netherlands were a civilised place [10:22] s/device/baby :) [10:22] lol [10:22] oimon: it tends to be [10:22] loads of my local shops got trashed last night :( [10:25] MartijnVdS: they put poo on the walls of the toilet or the office? [10:25] MooDoo: You mad fool, I'd of thought by your time of life you'd know what cause them and how to prevent it ;) [10:25] oimon: toilet [10:25] oimon: (stall) [10:26] look for a guy that looks like this: http://dilbert.com/strips/comic/2006-11-20/ [10:26] morning guys and gals! [10:27] \o andylockran [10:27] morning [10:27] howdy howdy howdy [10:28] soo [10:28] :) [10:28] are there any lightning talk slots planned for oggcamp? [10:31] Leprechaun giving a lightning talk: http://i.imgur.com/Taqwt.jpg [10:35] MartijnVdS: quick video question - i remember speaking to you about deinterlacing.. [10:36] i ripped and encoded a dvd and made a new dvd, in order to combine 3 short dvds into 1. but the final result was "wobbly",, especailly with horizontal movement of the chracters - did i miss a step? do i need to deinterlace? [10:36] davmor2: well i did advise her to take a shower ;) [10:36] MooDoo: hahaha [10:46] oimon: I think you need to deinterlace, yes [10:46] oimon: http://www.100fps.com/ [10:48] didn't think it would be necessary when ripping from a dvd [10:48] oimon: that page explains everything you ever wanted to know about interlacing, deinterlacing methods, how and why [10:48] oimon: depends on how the DVD was mastered (and the video on it encoded) [10:49] what a pain in teh butt this is :( [10:49] oimon: Read 100fps.com, then with everything you've learned adapt ffmpeg command line :) [10:49] oh ffmpeg? i just use handbrake, handles all this for you [10:50] i did use handbrake [10:50] OK toggle the right switches in handbrake [10:50] same thing really :) [10:50] you just have to know what each switch does :) [10:52] took me hours...gonna have to do it all again :( [10:52] decomb, set to auto, does everything for you :) [10:52] So popey you bought MS office why exactly? [10:52] oimon: tip: set it to do the first 5 minutes only [10:52] oimon: then check if it worked [10:52] davmor2: because I need it for work [10:53] contrary to what most free software advocates believe, OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice are nmot 100% compatible with Microsoft Office. [10:53] popey: so why didn't work provide you with a copy? [10:53] popey: in which way? [10:53] :O shocking [10:53] davmor2: I _am_ 'work' in this case [10:54] * popey is employed by a company he owns [10:54] ooh, rich kid eh :P [10:54] lemonade stands don't bring in much dough [10:54] windscreen wash sir? [10:54] gord: LibreOffice doesn't come with WordArt though! [10:54] MartijnVdS: there are a boat load of small things, macro set etc that don't work the same in OO.o/LO [10:54] gord: or Comic Sans [10:55] popey: well there is your first mistake asking, just wash the windscreen and stick out your hand [10:55] heh [10:55] thats where I have been going wrong [10:55] davmor2: embedded objects work badly in OOo [10:55] moin [10:55] okay, after half an hour i think i am done with this album that is nothing but different chiptune versions of axel f [10:55] gord: next up: http://www.demoscenetimemachine.com/ [10:56] popey: I knew you were, so you're company bought you a copy of MS office then ;) not you :) wash your hands of it and move on :) [10:58] popey: so here's the biggy, did you buy the MS version, Mac version, and are you running it on Microsoft of in wine? [10:59] I bought the Windows version which I am running under Windows. [10:59] on bare metal [11:00] popey: Fair enough, I was going to ask how it ran under wine if that was the case but now I shall not :) [11:00] Anyone have a Android phone that they don't want in here ? [11:00] i wonder how nice it would with virtualbox under that cool native mode [11:01] i'm not curious enough to spend the money on ms office to find out though ;) [11:07] diplo: No! however if you go to the orange shop you can pick up a reasonable pay as you go one called the San Francisco for a £100 if that helps [11:08] Ooh I'll take a look ta davmor2 [11:09] gord: what's that decomb thing you mentioned? a separate app or part of handbrake [11:09] oimon, park of handbrake [11:09] oimon: it's a processing flag in your favourite transcoding app [11:09] gord: parking brake? :P [11:10] diplo: it doesn't have the fastest processor in the world, and you can upgrade it by rooting and using blade upgrades if orange haven't yet for your info [11:10] gord: ah, found it hidden away [11:10] * daubers waits for the microwave to go *ping* [11:11] decomb has off, custom, default. [11:11] daubers: Rig it to go "Awoooga!" next time :) [11:12] Basically just want to get started, really don't want another contract :/ [11:12] If i could find a second hand desire / something similar I'd go for it [11:12] i love that you can now upload photos to ubuntu one folder from android :) [11:12] diplo, the android sdk does have an emulator y'know [11:15] heh, again something I want to try, but actually want a physical phone. [11:15] handbrake doesn't support ripping to divx anymore :( [11:15] Had *old* Nokias for a couple of years now [11:15] diplo: http://shop.orange.co.uk/mobile-phones/san-francisco-from-orange-in-grey [11:15] Just found one on ebay near end of auction for £21 [11:15] oimon, right, because divx is awful.. just use x264 :) turn off a bunch of options if its too slow [11:16] i have a dvd player that plays divx, would save me a lot of time encoding [11:16] so... you are ripping a dvd to... put on a dvd? [11:16] to play in your dvd player? [11:16] yes, to combine 2 dvds i need to rip+encode then do it again [11:16] Just keeping an eye on it, nice to have a cheap phone till I have some spare cash to afford a decent one [11:17] actually it's 3 short dvds [11:19] sounds like a lot of work [11:19] why not just carry 3 dvds? [11:19] and give your cpu a rest [11:20] cos my son likes to watch button moon, but the dvd's are really short, so often nothing else gets watched on the dvd player so best practice to put everything on one dvd. besides the dvds are getting scratched and flung around the room [11:20] heh [11:20] Button Moon :D [11:20] * popey starts singing [11:21] * oimon is sick of the tune by now [11:21] We're off to button moon, follow mister spoon.. button moooooon, button moooooooon [11:21] i just ordered bagpuss [11:21] he has good 70s taste [11:21] my son is now in to the wiggles and imagination movers, oh yeah and iron maiden :) [11:22] popey: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gu0o6u1VmGE though I preferred http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HI9rXx88YsA&feature=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UE7WrEidvyY personally [11:22] DM for when he's older [11:22] he's only 1 atm [11:23] there should be a channel dave for kids [11:23] oimon: If they start showing sharkey and george, I may have to get a TV licence [11:25] MooDoo, Iron Maiden \0/ saw them in Cardiff last week [11:25] First time in 19 years! [11:29] Myrtti: no lightning talks on the schedule yet [11:29] sky news live requires silverlight...what? bye then [11:31] AlanBell: aw. I've been toying with the idea of a short talk, don't have enough to say for a full slot... I doubt I'll have courage to do the presentation anyway, so no harm done [11:36] you could propose a lightning talks slot [11:39] o/ [11:41] seen the hitler gnome3 vid? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-moXUALZtw&feature=youtu.be [11:43] *yawn* [11:43] yes [11:43] all over G+ [11:44] lol i keep forgetting to look at g+ [11:44] tired meme [11:44] indeed [11:44] G+ is where meme's go to die [11:44] heh [11:44] google don't even bother emailing me about g+ stuff anymore. i'll check it again next week [11:45] I never turned off the emails [11:49] wow my g+ is pretty bare right now [11:52] anybody have recommendations for using loads of terminal windows together? ive always got 10+ open and tabs is ok, but there must be something better [11:52] dogmatic69, terminator [11:53] nice [12:02] terminator could do with some tabs too [12:03] it does do tabs [12:03] i think [12:03] nope [12:04] no context menu [12:04] no ctrl + t [12:04] ctrl-shift-t [12:04] ah [12:04] nice [12:04] why they hide it... :/ [12:04] because tabs are evil :) [12:04] so how does terminator compare with byobu? [12:05] different purposes [12:05] it doesn't :) terminator is a terminal emulator [12:05] byobu is a screen thingy [12:05] this terminator ~= the normal terminal [12:07] so would I use byobu in terminator? [12:07] maybe [12:08] * AlanBell installs to find out what this thing is [12:08] byobu is just a bit of a UI for screen [12:09] yeah, trying to figure out what terminator is [12:09] terminator is split screen terminals [12:09] you can have 10 in one window [12:11] basically if you use one terminal window, gnome-terminal should be fine, for those of us that regularly use multiple terminal windows, terminator is a great fit, its so easy to make/remove terminals :) [12:12] unless you also need those terminals to be slightly bigger than a postage stamp - then it's rubbish [12:13] AlanBell: http://oi51.tinypic.com/67uqzs.jpg === denny- is now known as denny [12:28] not i just have 3 tabs open with everything <3 [12:29] omg [12:30] open one term for each box, group them together. type command once, works on all in the group [12:31] I am getting lots of emails from Standard & Poor's about their big "downgrading America" thing [12:32] must log into the newsletter preferences console I rewrote for them and turn it off [12:34] haha, everyone in the office is wanting terminator now [12:34] they all on mac's === bag_ is now known as mr_bag [12:37] Terminator will run on any modern OS with Java 6 or later. [12:37] hmm i'm wondering if that's a different app with the same name [12:55] yeah, oimon there are two [13:05] same with unity [13:06] google for "unity" and you get some 3D framework for mobile phones(?) [13:06] MOO! [13:07] DOO! [13:08] POO! [13:08] what what! [13:08] FOO [13:09] MooDoo: are you going to rms? Local mirror downloading [15:55] list [15:58] what was the drop-in replacement for sendmail [16:02] exim is one [16:03] i think it was postfix [16:03] will try it and see [16:03] what does uptime mean with 100 days(!) [16:04] (!) <--- o.o [16:06] Not seen that before [16:06] But it might mean that it's been so long, there is bound to be a kernel update you should have rebooted for [16:06] logged into 4 servers, in htop only one says (!) after the days [16:07] it is the longest of the 4 [16:07] cztab! === cypher is now known as czajkowski [16:10] just thought of a new game [16:11] wait till friday afternoon, get a copy of terminator, open a terminal for each server, using broadcast -> all do 'sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade' [16:11] should be fun :) [16:20] hi guys i've just installed Natty using wubi and I've decided I no longer want to use Windows [16:21] is it possible to remove windows from my system at this point? Or will I need to reinstall Ubuntu using a live cd/usb? [16:21] i would do a total reinstall so it's native to the drive, will be quicker as well imho [16:22] Ok cheers, will that mean I will need to reconfigure everything when reinstalled? Or is it possible to do a back up of some sort? It took me a couple of hours to get my wireless adapter working and I don't want to have to do it again lol [16:23] JimmyEatFood: There's a question on http://wubi.sourceforge.net/faq.php about moving the install to a dedicated partition [16:23] so you might be able to avoid reinstalling [16:24] * MooDoo wasn't aware of that, thanks :) [16:24] links through to this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=438591 [16:25] thanks :) [16:27] cheers for your help [16:27] bye === GentileBen is now known as mangochutney === mangochutney is now known as OmNomSequitur === cypher is now known as czajkowski [18:11] London is looking a bit broken at the moment :( [18:13] yeah :( ,dont think it will stop soon also [18:16] London is broken? :P [18:16] How will we ever survive lol [18:52] loving how all the riots in London are right on top of where I used to live, and that we moved away from there because the area was going downhill :D [18:52] smart move was smart. [18:55] Azelphur: so now you're lowering the tone of where you moved to instead right ;) [18:55] :D [18:58] I see the Cambridgeshire guided busroute is finally opened [19:07] AlanBell: aye [19:08] AlanBell: 2 roads either side of us are seemingly being efected. [19:21] czajkowski: yikes, scary stuff [19:31] Why are large groups of people stupid?? [19:56] this is terrible [19:57] AlanBell: hmm? [19:58] the live coverage from Gotham City [20:00] * funkyHat happened to be in London on Saturday night. Luckily missed all of the violence though [20:04] Oh, more rioting? [20:23] You guys are awesome [20:23] I'm watching London on TV [20:23] keep it up! [20:24] obvious troll is obvious (popey/alanbell) [20:26] bacta :( [20:28] Sad [20:39] is there anything out there about the shooting of the guy that triggered it all? [20:40] not yet [20:40] IPCC are awaiting ballistics reports AIUI [20:46] At least the police are doing the sensible thing by keeping it contained and letting it burn itself out [20:47] rather than go in on a baton charge and make it worse [20:49] very concerning [20:49] I hope non of you London livers are in any risk [20:52] birminhgham too apparently [20:52] that appears much more minor [20:53] so far [20:53] yes, I hope that doesn't escalate [20:53] I'm shocked by it all [20:53] proves the utter yob/moron gang culture that sits in our country [20:54] in some ways it would be better if the police tackled them, showed them they can't get away with it [20:54] :/ [20:54] they are trying to [20:54] beat the hell out of them [20:54] you can't take that stance [20:54] I would have if I lived there ;/ [20:55] hamitron: Based on the trigger, that would make it much worse [20:56] hamitron: Ever read "Night Watch" by Terry Pratchett? [20:56] that trigger is just an excuse [20:56] there are lines you don't cross when protesting [20:56] burning peoples homes and not respecting others property is one [20:57] hamitron: Problem is, if you go in batons raised, you'll make it worse. These kind of things you bottle into an area and let it burn out. You have to show that the police and people on "the other side" are people too, not people behind riot shields coming at you with batons [20:57] daubers: no [20:58] and look how the soft approach has naught the younger generation of gangs they can do as they please on street corners [20:59] if I lived somewhere, with a riot, I'd expect the police to hit them hard [20:59] http://yfrog.com/h8rzsjmp wow [20:59] hamitron: Great scene in Night Watch where there are mobs attacking Watch houses through out the city, and the main character avoids it at his watch house by opening the door, lighting the lamps and sitting outside with a mug of coffee [21:00] as much as I love coffee..... [21:00] ;) [21:01] hamitron: It's more about stopping people thinking of "Us" and "them" and of thinking of everyone as a person with a family/dependants and what not [21:01] well, I still think the fear of something happening would make a lot go home [21:02] but tbh, our police force isn't built for that [21:02] hamitron: Fear is a rubbish way to press a point :( It's what causes these things to start with [21:02] I don't agree [21:02] people loot because they think they can [21:02] ;/ [21:03] * daubers has always believed that violence incites violence [21:03] mmm [21:03] I hope some of the rioters die [21:03] needs to be soft but firm [21:04] er... right [21:04] that didn't come out quite as clearly as i intedede :) [21:04] intended [21:04] :D [21:04] they should all be shot :P [21:05] Seeker`: only with rubber bullets, I'd agree..... but imagine the paperwork :-o [21:05] what mushrooms have you people eaten [21:05] bah, carrying a weapon is an invitation to be attacked [21:05] I've got a friend who is a police officer, was in Tottenham on saturday night [21:05] suddenly the comments went all weird [21:06] took a couple of bricks to the face / head [21:06] Ick [21:06] I have precisely no sympathy for a group of chavs who are taking an opportunity to go and nick stuff [21:06] or then this is a sign for me to go to bed as it's past midnight here and past 22 there [21:07] nn Myrtti [21:09] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weGEv_BhjNw [21:09] all i can think of is coffee now [21:09] :/ [21:09] ty daubers [21:10] brb [21:11] i am not getting a lot in info on the following point: is it (black british) cultural specific, or is it just nasty people doing what they do best? [21:11] Catbuskris: it is a load of young (say, under 25) people taking an opportunity to grab new TVs and sports clothes [21:11] i mean the BBC were specifically interviewing the head of the _black_ british police association, but they only asked him if this was an economically motivated riot, not racially [21:12] under the banner of being concerned about the police actions of the past few days [21:12] the original shooting which "triggered" it was under operation trident I believe [21:12] i'm under 25: why aren't they a bit more like me? honest question: i'm very sheltered i guess [21:12] and operation trident was set up to investigate gun crime in London's black community [21:13] The areas of london that it is occuring in are quite poor [21:13] i don't see it as legitimately racially motivated if the black dude in question shot a copper first... [21:14] well, thats the question [21:14] we don't know what happened yet [21:15] Closest we have is a rumour that the bullet found in the police radio was a hollowpoint, which is the same type of round that the police use [21:16] but that isn't confirmed, and even if it is, doesn't mean that it came from a police gun [21:19] the current stuff is crime motivated, hardly any of them will have any idea why it started [21:19] yep :/ [21:22] guys i'm a simple man, please: what are the implications of this bullet being a hollowpoint@ [21:22] are you implying the guy the polic shot was a policeman??? [21:23] its rumour and speculation [21:23] neither is healthy [21:24] (in this instance) [21:24] Catbuskris: the papers are trying to imply that it might have been a bullet from the police officer's gun that was embedded in the radio, not from the guy that was shot. [21:24] But nothing is certain until we see the IPCC report [21:25] oh well jesus, that's serious but very easily verifiable [21:25] they do that shit in CSI: Miami all the time; ballistics, you know? [21:25] presumably the guy had a gun with his prints all over it, and the bullet came therefrom, and the taxi driver/ a zillion other people saw it happen [21:26] just as a reminder, can we try and keep the conversation around this up to our usual high standards [21:26] * hamitron steps aside so as to not lower it [21:26] ;) [21:28] the CSI stuff actually takes more than half an hour, the show would be a bit dull if they did it real time [21:29] https://twitter.com/#!/marcreeves/status/100662595048050689 [21:29] erk [21:29] https://twitter.com/#!/alanbell_libsol/status/100663324018089984 [21:29] the before picture [21:30] http://houseofreeves.co.uk/ unsurprisingly unresponsive / slow [21:32] * daubers heads to bed [21:32] Night all [21:33] AlanBell: wonder how long till the google car drives down there for an update [21:33] ;) [21:39] wow, that shop isn't half alight [21:46] I can't quite believe what I'm seeing on the news [21:50] I've put my tv in a box, since it is useless with no channels ;) [21:50] I guess some will say I'm lucky [21:50] because it doesn't sound good [21:50] :/ [21:53] bbc news online :) [21:53] Guys, there's ##londonriots for a reason. [21:54] Meanwhile: https://yfrog.com/kk1nincj [21:55] Seeker`: got more important things for me personally, like compile a linux distro [21:55] I know that sounds selfish [21:55] :/ [21:56] jpds: I quite liked this: http://twitpic.com/633vk4 [21:56] Whoops, wrong one [21:56] http://twitpic.com/633c2d [22:03] good night everyone, sleep well. [22:49] owner of that store talking on BBC now [22:53] apparently in nottingham city centre now [22:53] blimey [22:54] wish the BBC news guy would shut up [22:54] sounds like he is trying to make the store owner depressed [23:15] that's a pretty common feeling i have, [23:15] "anyone who isn't dressed up as a hoodie as i am is likely to be mugged" [23:15] Unfortunately the BBC is the best I seem to have on the ground, so to speak [23:49] 0045: West Midlands Police confirm that a police station in Holyhead Road in Handsworth, Birmingham, is on fire.
