Pegasus_RPGhello. I'm trying to install lubuntu on a pentium 4 256mb system and it hangs completely when I try to start the installer. I can boot into the live environment just fine but starting the installer causes it to lock up hard so that i have to cycle power. Any ideas on what I can try21:31
Pegasus_RPG?21:32
bioterror!mini | Pegasus_RPG21:32
ubot5Pegasus_RPG: The Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want (the installer is like the one on the !Alternate CD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD21:32
bioterrorand after that sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop21:32
Pegasus_RPGahh ok good idea21:32
Pegasus_RPG(do I not have enough RAM or is this an APM issue?)21:32
Pegasus_RPGAnd can I tell it to look at the lubuntu USB key for packages instead of having to download them all again?21:33
bioterrorPegasus_RPG, APM was replaced with ACPI back in the years21:35
silverarrowhi21:35
silverarrowanyone clever with freezing issues?21:35
bioterrorhard to gues what could be the problem for the freeze, 256MB should be enough of RAM, as 192MB is minimal21:35
silverarrowI play TV clips from isohunt, and gnomeplayer freezes, not just the player but the entire system21:36
bioterrorsilverarrow, check your RAM21:36
silverarrowno, 1GB21:36
silverarrowcpu is debatable21:36
silverarrowbut it is a new issue21:36
silverarrowweird thing is, it never freezes during playing, or if I stop during play, it only freezes if let play to stop by it self21:37
silverarrowanyidea?21:37
silverarrowor too quirky ?21:37
silverarroweven for you boiterror?21:38
Pegasus_RPGhrm, if I yank the USB stick during the "freeze" I suddenly see the console with squashfs complaining21:39
Pegasus_RPGbut if I don't there's no activity on the stick21:40
Pegasus_RPGah well, to the mini CD21:40
silverarrowweird?21:41
silverarrowpegasus_rpg, you freeze too?21:41
silverarrowor rather your computer21:41
Pegasus_RPGwhen trying to install lubuntu, yes21:42
Pegasus_RPGbut now I'm using the mini CD21:42
Pegasus_RPGugh, how can I tell it to use the packages on the other USB stick? I have multipleUSB ports21:47
silverarrowI installed from a regular cd? self burned21:47
Pegasus_RPGmy internet connection is slow21:47
silverarrowit should detect only USB in use?21:48
Pegasus_RPGI should say, I'm using the mini CD image on a USB stick21:48
silverarrowoh I see21:50
silverarrowanyone clever with terminal after freezeup?22:08
silverarrowwhen freezing; I press F1, then I manage to login and get to a sort of terminal screen existence on the puter22:09
silverarrowI manage to fill in "sudo reboot" and it does,22:10
silverarrowis there a better way to enter the ordinary desktop environment?22:10
bioterroryes22:12
bioterrorsudo service lxdm restart22:13
bioterrorand next time, check logs22:13
silverarrowwhere are they?22:13
silverarrowthe logs I mean22:13
bioterrorsame place as always22:14
bioterror!filesystem | silverarrow22:14
ubot5silverarrow: An explanation of how files and directories are organized on Ubuntu, and how they can be manipulated, can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LinuxFilesystemTreeOverview  see also: man hier22:14
silverarroware you trying to be clever or something?22:14
Pegasus_RPGnew question: is an lubuntu install portable to different hardware? that is, if I set up a system then take an image, then push it to a system with different hardware, will it boot? (Assuming the same CPU class of course)22:14
bioterrorPegasus_RPG, should be as evdev handles most of the things and lots of drivers are included22:15
bioterrorPegasus_RPG, and I've used usb pendrive22:15
Pegasus_RPGok great. I'm preparing for a site-wide deployment22:15
Pegasus_RPGwith PCs from 1997 through 2003 :)22:16
Pegasus_RPGAnd I'll be using Windows DEployment Services to push the Linux images. How's that for rebellious? :)22:22
Pegasus_RPG(Reason is we have some Windows XP systems too)22:22
Pegasus_RPGincase anyone's curious, I did test using Likewise-open earlier today on Lubuntu and it worked fine22:24
phillwPegasus_RPG: with post 1997, you should be fine with 11.04, only the earlier stuff needs 10.04.22:24
Pegasus_RPGthe oldest are 586-class Celerons with 64MB RAM22:25
phillwPegasus_RPG: lubuntu cannot run on 64MB :(22:25
Pegasus_RPGI was afraid of that22:25
phillwPegasus_RPG: "A Pentium II or Celeron system with 128 MiB of RAM is probably a bottom-line configuration that may yield slow yet usable system with Lubuntu. It should be possible to install and run Lubuntu with less memory, but the result will likely not be suitable for practical use."22:26
Pegasus_RPGSo DSL for those boxes then ;)22:26
Pegasus_RPGI have more that meet the spec22:27
phillwPegasus_RPG: even zenix needs at least 80-90 MB, that is nearest non-*ubuntu official, release that I know of that works well.22:28
bioterrorbs22:28
phillwI do not know what pepermint needs, which is a lxde variant.22:28
Pegasus_RPGyeah, so Damn Small or Tiny Core for those I guess22:28
bioterrorphillw, still drop off that openbox and use fluxbox or something else22:29
bioterrorand you will get to 50MB22:29
bioterrorit's not magic22:29
Pegasus_RPGor I could just reinstall the Windows 98 they shpped with muahaha22:29
bioterrorall the openbox features just requires some RAM22:29
bioterrorPegasus_RPG, or you could just recycle that hazardous waste ;)22:29
Pegasus_RPGthat's probably the smartest thing to do22:30
silverarrowPegasus_RPG, getting those old systems to work is fun22:30
Pegasus_RPGI just hate to throw away stuff that still works22:30
Pegasus_RPG(for some definition of "works")22:30
phillwbioterror: Write a 'how' to' some time, you know that we do community re-spins :)22:30
bioterrorPegasus_RPG, scavenging metal from those is not a bad22:30
* phillw can we move this convo to #lubuntu-offtopic :P22:31
bioterrorphillw, take ubuntu mini, install fluxbox and wicd for example22:31
Pegasus_RPGsorry22:31
silverarrowwell, I added a bit of ram to a computer, and a new hard drive, and it runs just fine, with one exception, I cannot watch online TV, too weak cpu22:31
bioterrorif you're using desktop computer, wicd is not needed22:32
bioterrorif I ever get raspberry pi into my hands, I might make a spin22:33
silverarrow?22:34
