Pegasus_RPG | hello. I'm trying to install lubuntu on a pentium 4 256mb system and it hangs completely when I try to start the installer. I can boot into the live environment just fine but starting the installer causes it to lock up hard so that i have to cycle power. Any ideas on what I can try | 21:31 |
Pegasus_RPG | ? | 21:32 |
bioterror | !mini | Pegasus_RPG | 21:32 |
ubot5 | Pegasus_RPG: The Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want (the installer is like the one on the !Alternate CD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD | 21:32 |
bioterror | and after that sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop | 21:32 |
Pegasus_RPG | ahh ok good idea | 21:32 |
Pegasus_RPG | (do I not have enough RAM or is this an APM issue?) | 21:32 |
Pegasus_RPG | And can I tell it to look at the lubuntu USB key for packages instead of having to download them all again? | 21:33 |
bioterror | Pegasus_RPG, APM was replaced with ACPI back in the years | 21:35 |
silverarrow | hi | 21:35 |
silverarrow | anyone clever with freezing issues? | 21:35 |
bioterror | hard to gues what could be the problem for the freeze, 256MB should be enough of RAM, as 192MB is minimal | 21:35 |
silverarrow | I play TV clips from isohunt, and gnomeplayer freezes, not just the player but the entire system | 21:36 |
bioterror | silverarrow, check your RAM | 21:36 |
silverarrow | no, 1GB | 21:36 |
silverarrow | cpu is debatable | 21:36 |
silverarrow | but it is a new issue | 21:36 |
silverarrow | weird thing is, it never freezes during playing, or if I stop during play, it only freezes if let play to stop by it self | 21:37 |
silverarrow | anyidea? | 21:37 |
silverarrow | or too quirky ? | 21:37 |
silverarrow | even for you boiterror? | 21:38 |
Pegasus_RPG | hrm, if I yank the USB stick during the "freeze" I suddenly see the console with squashfs complaining | 21:39 |
Pegasus_RPG | but if I don't there's no activity on the stick | 21:40 |
Pegasus_RPG | ah well, to the mini CD | 21:40 |
silverarrow | weird? | 21:41 |
silverarrow | pegasus_rpg, you freeze too? | 21:41 |
silverarrow | or rather your computer | 21:41 |
Pegasus_RPG | when trying to install lubuntu, yes | 21:42 |
Pegasus_RPG | but now I'm using the mini CD | 21:42 |
Pegasus_RPG | ugh, how can I tell it to use the packages on the other USB stick? I have multipleUSB ports | 21:47 |
silverarrow | I installed from a regular cd? self burned | 21:47 |
Pegasus_RPG | my internet connection is slow | 21:47 |
silverarrow | it should detect only USB in use? | 21:48 |
Pegasus_RPG | I should say, I'm using the mini CD image on a USB stick | 21:48 |
silverarrow | oh I see | 21:50 |
silverarrow | anyone clever with terminal after freezeup? | 22:08 |
silverarrow | when freezing; I press F1, then I manage to login and get to a sort of terminal screen existence on the puter | 22:09 |
silverarrow | I manage to fill in "sudo reboot" and it does, | 22:10 |
silverarrow | is there a better way to enter the ordinary desktop environment? | 22:10 |
bioterror | yes | 22:12 |
bioterror | sudo service lxdm restart | 22:13 |
bioterror | and next time, check logs | 22:13 |
silverarrow | where are they? | 22:13 |
silverarrow | the logs I mean | 22:13 |
bioterror | same place as always | 22:14 |
bioterror | !filesystem | silverarrow | 22:14 |
ubot5 | silverarrow: An explanation of how files and directories are organized on Ubuntu, and how they can be manipulated, can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LinuxFilesystemTreeOverview see also: man hier | 22:14 |
silverarrow | are you trying to be clever or something? | 22:14 |
Pegasus_RPG | new question: is an lubuntu install portable to different hardware? that is, if I set up a system then take an image, then push it to a system with different hardware, will it boot? (Assuming the same CPU class of course) | 22:14 |
bioterror | Pegasus_RPG, should be as evdev handles most of the things and lots of drivers are included | 22:15 |
bioterror | Pegasus_RPG, and I've used usb pendrive | 22:15 |
Pegasus_RPG | ok great. I'm preparing for a site-wide deployment | 22:15 |
Pegasus_RPG | with PCs from 1997 through 2003 :) | 22:16 |
Pegasus_RPG | And I'll be using Windows DEployment Services to push the Linux images. How's that for rebellious? :) | 22:22 |
Pegasus_RPG | (Reason is we have some Windows XP systems too) | 22:22 |
Pegasus_RPG | incase anyone's curious, I did test using Likewise-open earlier today on Lubuntu and it worked fine | 22:24 |
phillw | Pegasus_RPG: with post 1997, you should be fine with 11.04, only the earlier stuff needs 10.04. | 22:24 |
Pegasus_RPG | the oldest are 586-class Celerons with 64MB RAM | 22:25 |
phillw | Pegasus_RPG: lubuntu cannot run on 64MB :( | 22:25 |
Pegasus_RPG | I was afraid of that | 22:25 |
phillw | Pegasus_RPG: "A Pentium II or Celeron system with 128 MiB of RAM is probably a bottom-line configuration that may yield slow yet usable system with Lubuntu. It should be possible to install and run Lubuntu with less memory, but the result will likely not be suitable for practical use." | 22:26 |
Pegasus_RPG | So DSL for those boxes then ;) | 22:26 |
Pegasus_RPG | I have more that meet the spec | 22:27 |
phillw | Pegasus_RPG: even zenix needs at least 80-90 MB, that is nearest non-*ubuntu official, release that I know of that works well. | 22:28 |
bioterror | bs | 22:28 |
phillw | I do not know what pepermint needs, which is a lxde variant. | 22:28 |
Pegasus_RPG | yeah, so Damn Small or Tiny Core for those I guess | 22:28 |
bioterror | phillw, still drop off that openbox and use fluxbox or something else | 22:29 |
bioterror | and you will get to 50MB | 22:29 |
bioterror | it's not magic | 22:29 |
Pegasus_RPG | or I could just reinstall the Windows 98 they shpped with muahaha | 22:29 |
bioterror | all the openbox features just requires some RAM | 22:29 |
bioterror | Pegasus_RPG, or you could just recycle that hazardous waste ;) | 22:29 |
Pegasus_RPG | that's probably the smartest thing to do | 22:30 |
silverarrow | Pegasus_RPG, getting those old systems to work is fun | 22:30 |
Pegasus_RPG | I just hate to throw away stuff that still works | 22:30 |
Pegasus_RPG | (for some definition of "works") | 22:30 |
phillw | bioterror: Write a 'how' to' some time, you know that we do community re-spins :) | 22:30 |
bioterror | Pegasus_RPG, scavenging metal from those is not a bad | 22:30 |
* phillw can we move this convo to #lubuntu-offtopic :P | 22:31 | |
bioterror | phillw, take ubuntu mini, install fluxbox and wicd for example | 22:31 |
Pegasus_RPG | sorry | 22:31 |
silverarrow | well, I added a bit of ram to a computer, and a new hard drive, and it runs just fine, with one exception, I cannot watch online TV, too weak cpu | 22:31 |
bioterror | if you're using desktop computer, wicd is not needed | 22:32 |
bioterror | if I ever get raspberry pi into my hands, I might make a spin | 22:33 |
silverarrow | ? | 22:34 |
