neil_sladeHello. It is very early here in The UK, but hopefully someone somewhere else is online and can help me.04:25
neil_sladeI have tried using the irc ubuntu with Pidgin. In general it works well enough, but when I minimise Pidgin I do not get any notifications of chat activity. So some discussions last night went unnoticed.04:27
Unit193You can change settings in Pidgin to get sound04:30
neil_sladeI am now giving Xchat another try. Ideally I want something that I can minimise that will not bother me with messages if someone just logs in and logs out again without sending a message, but I would like to know about any chat activity as soon as it happens and to not overlook anything. I have set the notification options in Xchat. I now need to minimise it and find out whether or not I am alerted to new messages when xch04:32
neil_sladeat is minimised to the system tray. Is there anyone who can send me a few test messages in a few minutes? Thanks for your suggestion Unit193, but I keep my speakers off most of the time, and if I am listening to music maybe Pidgins sound could be missed anyway. I need visual notifications that cannot be missed even if I am typing or moving between web pages at the time.04:32
neil_sladeI will minimise Xchat  now. If I do not notice and reply to your messages then I apologise, but for this test I must leave Xchat minimised for some time and see whether or not I am alerted to chat activity. Maybe some of you could just type test message for neil a few times. Thanks.04:37
Unit193neil_slade: You should get this04:43
neil_sladeThanks Unite193, but I think I will have to find another way of connecting to irc. I went away fora few minutes to make a cup of tea. Here in the UK I am having breakfast before going to work. I saw no notification of your message before maximising Xchat back to my screen. I will have to leave this for now and try and find something that will do what I want. What i really need is a program that can be minimised, but it's n04:52
neil_sladeotification messages stay on top of all other windows and stay there until cancelled. Pidgin and Xchat do not do what I want, I must keep searching. Thanks Unit193, I will disconnect in a few minutes and finish getting ready for work.04:52
M0hineil_slade: Added something to your alert notifications in settings?04:53
Unit193There should be one in the icon bar for Xchat04:54
neil_sladeYes, I've already enabled every alert setting I can find in Xchat. Thee was still nothing on my screen telling me about your message when Xchat was minimised. I had to maximise and read the message for knowing it was there.04:55
M0hineil_slade: you are in which version? 11.04 ?04:55
neil_sladeYes, 11.0404:56
M0hiare you using any docky? like AWN or some others?04:56
neil_sladeThanks for your help Unit193 and M8hi, but I must disconnect now and get ready for work.04:57

pmackinneyQuick admin question- Running Ubuntu 10.4, I've set an alias for root in /etc/aliases, and I've tested that mail sent to root goes through, but I never get any system logs. I'm used to the root account getting a daily log summary. How to do this in Ubuntu?17:39
bodhi_zazenquiet today =)18:10
Demon002Has anyone managed a 11.04 Wubi install on Raid, if so do you know where the tutorial can be found?19:31
nghalionhelloeveryone21:50
nghalionI have a problem in Ubuntu. where can i ask related questions?21:54
holsteinnghalion: this is a decent place... if you want, give the /topic a look and go for it :)21:56
nghalionit's the first time for me here. and don't know exactly how things work21:57
nghalioni had a problem that i googled for but found nothing. (maybe i didn't search right)21:58
nghalionso i thought maybe i'll find my answer here21:58
nghalionam i in the right place to troubleshoot ubuntu?21:59
nghalionif not can someone please tell me where to ask21:59
urlin2unghalion, no matter waht channel getting to the point with an actaul question will be best served.22:00
urlin2uwhat22:00
holsteinnghalion: sure... if you want, when you join a channel check out the /topic22:00
holsteinyou can literally type "/topic"22:01
nghalionthanks22:01
holsteinhere, for example, you will see the part about "Please do not wait to ask questions, simply ask"22:01
nghalionnoticed that now :)22:01
holsteinnghalion: no worries, and its pretty relaxed here22:02
nghalionya it seems like it22:02
holsteinbut, the busy channels can be noticably more strict, and for good reason22:02
nghalionstrict in what way?22:02
nghalioni thought this is to learn more about ubuntu22:02
holstein!ask | nghalion22:03
ubot2`nghalion: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)22:03
holsteinnghalion: like.. you might get that in a channel22:03
holsteinagain... no worries, its part of the learning process to see what its like on both sides22:03
nghalion!ask | nghalion22:04
ubot2`nghalion, please see my private message22:04
nghalionthank u ubot222:04
nghalionand sorry for cothering22:04
nghalionbothering*22:04
holsteinnah, thats what ubot2` is for22:05
nghalion:)22:05
holsteinyou can query that bot and ask questions22:05
holstein!grub22:06
ubot2`GRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager since 9.10 (Karmic). Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - For more information and troubleshooting for GRUB2 please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 - See !grub1 for releases before Karmic (9.10)22:06
nghalioni sure will22:06
holsteinanyways.. whats up nghalion ?22:06
nghalionwell22:06
nghalioni recently resized my HDD (ubuntu installed on it) and now the mount point shows as /sdb instead of /media. this cuzed problems with folder links and similar stuff.22:08
holsteinwhat changed?22:08
holsteinwhat is expecting /media?22:08
holsteinyou can always mount partitions as /whatever22:09
nghalionfor example: one of my drives was located in /media/storage now it's /media/sdb622:09
nghalioni can change that how?22:09
holsteinyou can always just mount it over at /media/storage22:11
holsteinim not sure how or why it has changed22:11
holsteinthis has to be an extra drive or partition22:11
holsteinnghalion: why dont you run something like this in a terminal22:11
holsteinsudo fdisk -l22:12
nghalioni did22:12
holsteinand paste bin that here...22:12
holsteinhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/22:12
holsteinand you can let me know what is what, and whats doing what, why22:12
Unit193If he has pastebinit installed he can do   sudo blkid |pastebinit22:12
holsteinUnit193: :)22:13
nghalionthanks for the tip unit19322:14
nghalionok done22:14
Unit193holstein: Didn't someone say somthing about s/fdisk -l/blkid/ anyway?22:14
nghalionhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/679247/22:19
holsteinnghalion: biab...22:30
nghalion?22:31
nghaliondidn't get u22:31
holsteinnghalion: im back now22:36
* holstein looking22:36
holsteinnghalion: so... sda is windows, and sdb is linux22:36
nghalionya22:36
holsteinyou say you resized something? what?22:36
nghalionplus a NTFS partion with linux22:36
holsteinyeah?22:37
holsteinwheres that?22:37
holsteinsdb6 ?22:37
nghalionya22:37
nghalioni added an extra partion and deleted it later22:38
nghalionso i thought everything went back the way it was22:38
nghalionbut i ended up with this problem22:38
holsteinwhat problem?22:38
holsteini guess im just not sure what the deal is22:38
nghalionthe naming problem22:38
holsteinyou have a couple 'red flags' for me22:38
holsteinyou have linux install on an ntfs paritition22:38
holsteinand im still not clear on what the naming problem is22:39
nghalionok22:39
holsteinif that directory exists22:39
holsteinyou can mount that partition to it22:39
nghalionya it does22:39
nghalionu know22:39
nghalionit's not a big deal22:39
holsteinyou can set that up in /ets/fstab if you want22:39
nghalioni'll try that22:39
holsteinnghalion: i wouls start from the beginning and really think about what is where and why22:39
holsteinwould*22:39
nghalionsure22:40
holsteinespecially now since you are arguably at the beginning22:40
nghalioni'll try to resolve it22:40
holsteinyou could blow out all the linux partitions, get windows where/how you want it22:40
nghalionif i need anything i'll sure get back to u22:40
holsteinand reinstall, and not be out anything but 20 or 30 minuts22:40
holsteinminutes*22:40
nghalionbut reinstalling will wipe ubuntu out22:41
holsteinsux to get too far down the road and realize you got the disk in a way that you dont like :/22:41
nghalioni dont want that now22:41
nghalionif that's the only way22:41
nghalioni'll do it later22:41
holsteinnghalion: sure.. you dont have to, im sure you can sort it out :)22:41
holsteinif i cant help, we'll find someone who can22:41
nghalionthanks a million holstein appreciate your help greatly22:42
