Neo31Hello, please I need some assistance for UGJ packaging. I already started to learn packaging but I don't know where to find software to be packaged. (I can only package software for now) and I may learn applying software patches and package updates.07:07
RhondaUGJ?07:17
Neo31Ubuntu Global Jam07:17
RhondaJust found it in google. :)07:18
Neo31good :)07:18
RhondaDebian has a "request for packaging" list which contains software that people would like to see packaged but noone has picked up yet.07:18
Neo31can you pass a link please, Rhonda?07:19
RhondaGo to http://wnpp.debian.net/ and look there. :)07:19
RhondaRFP is the requests for packaging, RFA means Adoption, and RFH is looking for help07:19
Rhonda… but there is a legend right below the selections I just notice %-)07:20
Neo31:)07:20
Neo31I compiled 0ad before :)07:20
Neo31I guess that's something I could start with07:21
RhondaPlease read the corresponding bugreports, some either might have started already with it, or it was too troublesome licensewise. There should be hints or traces of that in the corresponding bugreport.07:26
Neo31good, now I got from where to start. can you tell me where to upload the packages (if those are debian packages can I package them on ubuntu and upload to debian) otherwise is there some similar link to ubuntu packaging07:27
Neo31yes Rhonda I switched to ffmpeg-gui, it has been left for a long time. may be I can do something with that07:27
Rhondaubuntu packaging isn't so much different than Debian packaging - and you can upload them to mentors.debian.net07:30
RhondaBut for Debian you need to not only produce the source package but also a binary one - that is meant to have a fuzzy feeling that people have at least test-built and potentially even tested it07:31
nigelbActually, I like the proposal of decommisioning revu and using mentors.debian.net for Ubuntu and debian to encourage packages going to Debian directly.07:31
RhondaPlease use lintian from Debian for checking the result, lintian in Ubuntu is different in some aspects.07:31
Neo31sorry, I've got busy with somethings. I hope I can get back soon. so Rhonda do you recommend packaging using debian directly? can I package something from debian to ubuntu otherwise?07:42
RhondaIt is suggested to package for Debian and let it sync to Ubuntu.07:50
RhondaYou get the second distribution "for free". :)07:50
Rhonda… and not only a second one but all the other Debian derivatives, which is much better for the overall free software eco system.07:51
RhondaYou have to do the work anyway, and pushing it to Debian instead of Ubuntu (if one has a responsive sponsor, that is), is the better net gain.07:52
Neo31ok, I got it. so it will be easier and better to package directly for debian. but just to know, there are people to package from debian to Ubuntu right? can you tell me how that works?08:00
geserNeo31: the (source) packages get copied from the Debian repository to Ubuntu08:05
geserand only touched by Ubuntu dev if necessary (e.g. doesn't build, patches, library transitions, etc.)08:06
Neo31ok geser so we can copy debian source packages and build them for Ubuntu! right!?08:07
Neo31can you tell me from where I can get these packages and how I can make sure their are not yet packaged and where to submit?08:10
* Neo31 is sorry for asking a lot of questions08:10
geseryes, that's how it done but you might check if any freezes (in Ubuntu) apply that stop that copying08:10
Neo31ok, I will get back to this as soon as I get done with some work here08:14
Neo31thanks a lot08:14

RhondaNeo31: The syncing from Debian happens automatically until the freeze sents in. Then a sync request is needed, and later in the release process even freeze exceptions. Should be covered on the wiki if you follow the links to the release schedule of a specific release.08:19
Neo31Rhonda, according to this ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PReleaseSchedule ) I can work on importing packages to Ubuntu in december?08:24
Neo31LTSDebianImportFreeze08:24
RhondaIf they haven't synced for whatever reasons, yes.  And then there are merges, when there are differences (needed)08:25
jtaylorwtf08:25
jtaylorin semantiks configure script is some 80k binary data08:25
jtaylorrest is python08:25
Neo31hum, I guess I would just start with some packaging training this time since it is the first Ubuntu Global Jam for my loco. and may be do some packaging for debian (for that you have recommended using debian because lintian is different?)08:29
Neo31I guess that may be the best we can do for september :)08:29

oier_Hi, after upgrading with errors to Oneiric (see bug #828759) I get debsums errors on every apt operation (bug #809924). I tried upgrading banshee and firefox after the faulty Oneiric upgrade but since apt exited with the debsum errors they are unusable since then because they freeze on startup.13:22

phschwartzHi all, I am having an issue with a deb that I have build. The package has a post-install script that sets up the software that needs to run along with 2 deps, libicu and expect. If libicu is not installed, it will fail before the post-install as expected, if expect is not installed, it will fail after the post-install and set the status to iU even though all configuration for it is now done.19:43
phschwartzWhat would cause the actions taken when the deps are missing to be different?19:43
sorenphschwartz: Can you post the output of "dpkg -I yourpackage.deb" on a pastebin somewhere?19:44
phschwartzsoren: Let me see if I can get it grab it.19:45
sorenphschwartz: The "pastebinit" utility might be useful.19:46
phschwartzsoren: behind a firewall on the dev system so not able to use it :(19:46
sorenphschwartz: E.g. "dpkg -I whatever.deb | pastebinit"19:46
sorenphschwartz: Ah, ok.19:46
pdtpatr1ckQuestion .. I keep getting this .. what's the remedy please19:47
pdtpatr1ckhttp://pastebin.com/yhgmLgS719:47
pdtpatr1ckehh looks like i had to be one level down ..19:50
pdtpatr1ckbut now i'm getting this19:50
pdtpatr1ckhttp://pastebin.com/7QZGAkM719:50
jtaylorpdtpatr1ck: your control file may not be correctly formatted, probably a missing empty line between the source and package paragraph19:53
jtayloralso the orig.tar must be in the parent directory19:53
pdtpatr1ckjtaylor, it looks like this one here19:54
pdtpatr1ckhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide/PackagingOverview19:55
phschwartzsoren: Install with libicu not installed. http://paste2.org/p/162148719:55
sorenphschwartz: Nono. dpkg -I (capital i).19:55
phschwartzsoren: Install with expect not installed. http://paste2.org/p/1621484 Lines 5 through 31 are my post install.19:55
phschwartzah, let me do that. Didn't realize I did with lowercase19:56
jtaylorpdtpatr1ck: exactly like that one?19:57
phschwartzsoren: http://paste2.org/p/162149419:57
sorenphschwartz: Can you do the same for hpccsystems-platform-community_3.2.0-1rcnatty_amd64.deb, please?19:58
phschwartzdamn, see what happens when I have too many builds in the same dir, I use the wrong one. lol19:59

phschwartzone sec19:59
phschwartzsoren: http://paste2.org/p/162149620:00
sorenphschwartz: Um.. No.20:01
soren Package: hpccsystems-platform20:02
sorenphschwartz: Wrong package :)20:02
jtaylorstrange seems ok20:02
phschwartzsoren: no that is of hpccsystems-platform-community_3.2.0-1rcnatty_amd64.deb20:02
phschwartzsoren: community_3.2.0-1rc is the version tag20:03
phschwartznot sure why it isn't looking formated right in the -I20:03
sorenphschwartz: Er..20:03
sorenphschwartz: The version is after the first underscore.20:03
phschwartzsoren: hmm, didn't know of that req. Would it cause and issue for the package?20:05
sorenIt's not a requirement.20:05
sorenIt's just how they're built.20:05
sorenHow are you building these packages?20:05
phschwartzStarted from generating from cmake, then went dpkg-buildpackage as cmake was acting up (very large c++ cmake project)20:06
cjwatsonI would be inclined to call that a requirement even if it technically isn't20:09
cjwatsonand the policy manual at least says that underscores are disallowed in versions20:10
phschwartzcjwatson: do you have the url for the policy manual handy by any chance?20:11
cjwatsonmy browser is closed right now, but just google for Debian policy manual20:12
cjwatsonshould be the first hit20:12
phschwartzas it was, ty20:14
sorenphschwartz: Can you share your debian/control?20:20

sorenThat's it?20:41
sorenThat's the whole thing?20:41
phschwartzyeah, seems to look like it got clobbered20:41
phschwartzThat might be the issue20:41
phschwartzlet me verify20:41
sorenThat would do it.20:41
sorenWell... It would do *something*.20:41
soren...and it wouldn't be good.20:41
phschwartzyeah, that is whats in it.20:42
phschwartzLet me run the regen scripts and see if it fixes it20:42
phschwartzah had to scroll down, Files: is the only other thing in there, and it is a really long list of them20:44
phschwartzall in this format20:45
phschwartz32f34ca39e7854bbc3db7d7b434b16bb  opt/HPCCSystems/sbin/configmg20:45
sorenIn debian/control?20:47
sorenNot sure how you got into that mess, but that's probably where your problems stem from.20:47
cjwatsonsounds like you copied debian/<whatever>/DEBIAN/control (or some other control file from a *binary* package) into debian/control21:02
cjwatsonlfaraone: I don't seem to have got that mail.  What address did you send it to?21:04
