[06:44] I'm the Application Architect [06:44] okay then, i am going to pretend like i know what that is while i search google [06:45] I oversee a bunch of things not directly related to development, but necessary for it, like our version control systems, making sure applications run efficiently, and a number of other things [06:45] I also do development of non-money generating systems [06:46] basically, I'm like a developer with a good dose of sysadmin thrown in [06:46] morning Kilos [06:46] morning superfly that was quick [06:47] hi kilos [06:47] you like a buddy pounce in pidgin [06:47] found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_Architecture [06:47] hi magespawn [06:47] magespawn: yeah, that's part of what I do [06:48] bit like the architect in the matrix [06:48] yep [06:48] cool [06:48] matrix the moviws? [06:48] movies [06:49] i would like to come play around with your hardware some time [06:49] yes kilos [06:50] oh my . thats all supposed to be fantasy. must i start worrying [06:51] it is sci-fi not fantasy. it is a fantasy, maybe [06:51] where is a safe place to hide [06:51] hehe [06:52] neo isnt here to save us [06:55] neo is a program [07:16] neo is in the matrix [07:16] o/ [07:16] lo oom Kilos [07:16] lo superfly, magespawn [07:17] lo nuvolari [07:17] lo Maaz [07:33] sup nuvolari [07:35] howdy nuvolari [07:39] lo Squirm [07:41] hello === Squirm2 is now known as Squirm [07:47] wow it's windy today [07:59] good morning [08:00] hiya inetpro [08:00] cocooncrash: ping [08:00] inetpro: pong [08:00] cocooncrash: do you still use akregator for reading RSS feeds? [08:00] inetpro: Yes [08:01] ohey, it's cocooncrash! [08:01] * inetpro has some issues with akregator [08:01] it doesn't like RSS2 produced by sharepoint [08:02] superfly: :) [08:03] cocooncrash: I was hoping that you perhaps found something else [08:03] inetpro: Haven't had a reason to really [08:03] inetpro: But there are plenty other feed readers out there [08:04] cocooncrash: I still like akregator as well, except for this issue [08:05] it doesn't authenticate properly and then ends in a crash [08:07] what other rss readers do you guys use? [08:13] inetpro: twitter :-P [08:14] superfly: eish! [08:14] superfly: I need something that will tell me when an internal user has updated his internal blog [08:15] inetpro: I use akregator as well, so I don't know, I'm afraid [13:25] I need passkey-agent to pair my cellphone with my netbook, because I'm not running KDE or Gnome I can't use there apps. Found posts that say that Bluez should come with it, but I can't seem to get it to work or find the source for it anywhere. any ideas? [15:46] hehe then it seems to take forever [15:47] hehe would not like to be in that position [15:48] ok, my work is done [15:49] off home to test out jenkins-ci and download beta1, man I'm going to miss my uncapped next month [15:49] cheers scar[w] [15:49] cya Kilos hope you have a good weekend [15:50] you too lad [16:08] scar[w]: I'm installing beta 1 Kubuntu into a VM at the moment [16:14] superfly: cool... I installed kubuntu 11.04 again this morning... I think the only thing I am missing out on is the new PIM and the new software center... it looks good [16:15] http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11210861&postcount=68 [16:47] *hrm* [16:47] who here knows stellenbosch resturants well? [16:48] I need a recommentation of a nice place in stellies to take a female :) [17:06] I want to switch to ubuntu. Once i installed it and i was not able to change screen resolution, play vidos and other display settings. My friend told me to install video driver from software centre. But there were many drivers under display category. i was confused which to install or detect for my computer. My pc config is core i3 2100 sandybridge, intel dh61ww motherboard and 4 gb ddr3 ram.Plz tell what to do. [17:09] domecress: I don't use Ubuntu, but there should be an item in the administration section called "Additional Drivers" - that should detect which graphics card you have and install the right driver for it. [17:09] thanks superfly, can anybody else explain more? [17:11] domecress: which version of Ubuntu are you running? [17:13] domecress: can you watch youtube videos? [17:18] yeah man [17:26] domecress, did you update after installing? [17:27] no man. i m a new user. [17:27] ok [17:27] if you go to system then administration [17:27] you will find update manager [17:28] ok [17:28] once updated most things work [17:28] thanks [17:28] in update manager you need to also [17:28] sec i look quick [17:28] * nlsthzn always thinks quickest way to an update would be to type in terminal "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade ... but that is just me :p [17:29] yeah nlsthzn [17:29] domecress, do you know how to use the terminal [17:30] is there any aplication in ubuntu as powerful as task manager of windows? i mean to say that can be used to terminate program when system hangs [17:30] go to applications [17:30] accesories [17:30] terminal [17:31] copy paste this in the terminal [17:31] sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade [17:31] is it somewhat similar to DOS? [17:31] terminal is the same as command line in windows [17:31] kinda [17:31] but more powerful [17:32] i should consider linux mint or start with ubuntu? [17:32] i love ubuntu [17:33] domecress: if you don't mind using the terminal then it is your best tool... if you do you can do most of what it does via the GUI but it takes longer... [17:33] if you dont like using the command line interface we can do it the graphical way [17:33] mint is ubuntu with some additional bells and whistles already installed... all of which can be added in Ubuntu very quickly ;) [17:36] maybe we first need to establish how much domecress knows about computers [17:36] ok [17:36] lotsa windows users are scared of the command line [17:36] no man [17:36] i can use dos [17:36] basics [17:36] ok domecress which way do you want to go? [17:37] ok then the terminal is the quickest way [17:37] ok [17:37] go applications [17:37] now i am planning to completely switch over to linux [17:37] accesories [17:37] terminal [17:38] i dumped windows 2 years ago [17:38] in the terminal window type in sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrad [17:38] can i get your facebook id kilos? i find u pretty interesting [17:39] lol [17:39] i m serious [17:39] i hardly go there but i am miles sharpe [17:40] are you updating yet? [17:40] what updating? i cant understand [17:41] when to type that command into the terminal and hit enter it will update [17:41] sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade [17:41] that is the command to check what updates are available and update [17:42] where can i find list of all basic commands of terminal [17:42] i m cuttently using xp and chatting through it [17:42] oh ok [17:42] i will instal ubuntu within a week [17:43] howdy all [17:43] are you writingall this down [17:43] lo magespawn [17:43] hi kilos [17:43] hi domecress [17:43] new face i see [17:43] no, but now i will save all this in text pad [17:44] nlsthzn, you got a link for domecress for all the commands [17:44] hehhow magespawn [17:44] Maaz, google terminal commands for ubuntu [17:44] Kilos: "Using The Terminal - Community Ubuntu Documentation" https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal :: "Ubuntu-tz Open new terminal from command line" https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-tz/2009-May/000065.html :: "CommandlineHowto - Community Ubuntu Documentation" https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CommandlineHowto :: "Ubuntu Cheat Sheet | FOSSwire" http://fosswire.com/post/2008/04/ubuntu-cheat-sheet/ :: "Simple Terminal Co [17:44] domecress, check those links [17:45] ok [17:45] maaz is our local bot [17:45] lo Delizia [17:45] anyway domecress welcome to ubuntu-za [17:45] thanks to all of you for helping me [17:45] yw [17:46] you will find once ubuntu is updated everything works [17:46] hi kilos [17:46] ispecially kilos and superfly [17:46] Maaz, google pdf on ubuntu [17:46] magespawn: "VnTutor: What is The Best PDF Reader for Ubuntu Users?" http://vntutor.blogspot.com/2008/01/what-is-best-pdf-reader-for-ubuntu.html :: "Print to PDF in Ubuntu" http://lifehacker.com/264305/print-to-pdf-in-ubuntu :: "Modifying PDF Files With PDFedit On Ubuntu Feisty Fawn ..." http://www.howtoforge.com/editing_pdf_files_pdfedit_ubuntu_feisty :: "Main page - Ubuntu Pocket Guide and Reference" http://ubuntupocketguide.com/ :: "List [17:47] the pocket guide is a good reading start [17:47] it doesnt install a complete working system like windows. you need to update [17:47] domecress: did you get the video drivers installed? [17:54] * nlsthzn would just like to put in context... From the theme song of I am Weasel... "You don't need pants for the victory dance..." I just found it full of win to help someone on IRC when they have a problem but haven't installed Ubuntu yet :D [17:54] yeah [17:55] lol [17:55] peeps are scared of the unknown and its quite a change from windows [17:56] but being able to use dos helps so cli commands will come easy to him [17:57] i used to use dos a lot back in the day, was easier then win 3.11 [17:57] whats the bet once he has a working ubuntu he dumps winsucks [17:57] lol. yeah magespawn [17:57] I preffered Dos to Windows back in the day... [17:58] still do a lot in win 7 from cmd [17:58] most of the ppl i work with have win [17:59] only geeks use cli [17:59] does anybody know if i can replace winCE with ubuntu or some version of linux? [18:00] right thanks Kilos [18:00] For day to day use I can't imagine using the CLI... Now the terminal yes, I like to use the Terminal :) [18:00] ha [18:00] cli=terminal [18:00] put your pants on so you can think [18:01] magespawn: it depends on the hardware [18:01] i have a quote i saw in a forum brb [18:02] right i will check it out, but its one of those very small netbooks, not sure about the make. [18:05] Kilos: sure they the same thing... but when I read CLI I think Windows... terminal and/or shell I think *nix :) [18:05] lol [18:06] a thirty two bit extension and graphical shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally code for a four bit microprocessor which is written by a two bit company that cant stand one bit of competition - LW [18:06] lol [18:12] as a matter of interest guys what would be the command for xubuntu to replace sudo gdm start [18:13] would it be xdm instead of gdm [18:16] Kilos: you can try xdm - did you already try gdm? [18:17] no superfly i want to first update it etc [18:17] was given airtime for mtn uncapped so gotta get all i can in 24 hours [18:18] and mtn is on edge only from this tower [18:18] i just thought seeing as its gdm it wont work cause its not gnome [18:18] Maaz, define gdm [18:19] Kilos: GDM Grid Data Management (Grid) [18:19] oh my [18:19] not gnome desktop manager [18:20] will start the bundle at midnight tomorrow night and see what all i can get done [18:20] natty gnome and xubuntu [18:21] nice thing about xubuntu it comes with xchat and pidgin already [18:22] only desktop will need learning whats where [18:36] i have tried kubuntu, that is quite nice, also have tried puppy and dsl.
