sharparrowanyone ever experienced disintegrating desktop envoronment?00:41
sharparrowI cannot boot eithe r00:42
jmarsdensharparrow: Boot from Lubuntu LiveCD, use "Try before install" mode, check out hard drive for errors.   If you can't boot from the livecd, suspect a hardware issue.00:43
sharparrowhi00:43
sharparrowI am in live lubuntu now00:43
sharparrow11.04 same as installed version00:43
sharparrowit booted fine00:44
jmarsdenOK, so you can boot from the CD OK.  So what happened when you tried to boot from the hard drive -- what error message did you see?00:44
sharparrowcannot find it00:44
sharparrowcannot find operative system00:44
sharparrowslightly different message on each boot atempt00:44
sharparrowthough bios did't detect hd either00:45
sharparrowmaybe bios is a bit shoddy00:45
jmarsdenSo... in the livecd environment, can you see the hard drive?  Sounds like HD failure to me.00:45
sharparrowbut lubuntu has managed to overcome bios trouble00:45
sharparrowdarn, hard drive is 3 months old00:46
sharparrowoh, and one message unable to fix disk100:46
jmarsden3 months... so still under warranty, so no problem, you can get a new one for free :)00:46
jmarsdenBut wait... what EXACTLY was the message about being unable to fix ... ?00:46
jmarsdenYou need to give EXACT messages not your interpretation of them.00:47
sharparrowjust a avery short message on a black screen,00:47
jmarsdenAnd it was exactly the string "unable to fix disk1"  ?00:47
sharparrowI shall note down on paper next time00:47
jmarsdenOK.00:47
sharparrowyes00:47
jmarsdenCAn you mount the partitions on the HD from the livecd Lubuntu ?00:47
sharparrowwhich application does that?00:48
jmarsdenThe mount command :)00:48
sharparrowoh, you mean terminal00:48
sharparrowmount sda1?00:48
sharparrowsudo mount sda1?00:49
jmarsdenWhen hardware starts to break, you need to actually understand Linux to work with it...00:49
jmarsdenFirst, does    sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda     output anything useful ?00:49
sharparrowcould be a challenge00:49
jmarsdenThere are no pretty GUI utilities that are smart enough to work around hardware being broken, at least in my experience.00:50
sharparrownothing happens00:50
jmarsdenOK, and the drive used to be /dev/sda (when it worked) ?00:50
sharparrowhmm00:51
sharparrowyes00:51
jmarsdenSo ... it has disappaeared.  So either it is powered off, data cable disconnected, or it failed.00:51
sharparrowI installed using lubuntu default method, and let it take all of the hard disk. I don't know exactly what it did00:52
sharparrowi haven't been inventive with names or anytithing like that00:53
jmarsdenYou can try using a general hardware utilities CD like Ultimate Boot CD to check out your machine, but it sure looks like the hard drive died.  http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html00:53
sharparrowit has worked fine until just a few hours ago. First thing that happen, machine froze. I restarted using the power off/on button00:53
sharparrowit happent twice today00:54
sharparrowthen now, suddenly xchat, transmission and browser shot down by thems selves, or disappeard00:54
sharparrowthen desktop environment sort of got lost00:55
jmarsdenOK.  Easiest/quickest fix is to replace the HD and restore from backups.  If that works, you can then try to work on the "old" HD some more to see if it can be recovered at all.00:55
sharparrowI shall have to get my screw driver and go to the computer store tomorrow00:56
jmarsdenSounds like a good plan.00:56
sharparrowis there a clever way to check hard drive00:57
sharparrowmy self?00:57
sharparrowor does it have to be an expert with special equipment ?00:57
jmarsdenYes, use the CD I told you about, boot from it, try several of the HD diagnostic tools on it.00:58
sharparrow....on to it....00:58
sharparrowand I will get how it works fairly naturally ?00:59
jmarsdenYou can also read /var/log/messages or similar in the livecd environment, and see if there are any hd related errors in there.00:59
sharparrowrather unfortunate for it to happen now00:59
sharparrowthanks for you help jmarsden00:59
jmarsdenI hope so... it is menu based and has a collection of the tools from Seagate, Hitachi, WD, etc for disk diagnostics.  If you can't use them, just replace the disk and call whoever you need to call re getting a warranty replacement for the old drive.01:00
jmarsdenYou're welcome.01:00
sharparrowdo you know if grub2 issues might affect system after booting, ?01:01
jmarsdenNo, once it is booted grub is no longer involved.01:01
sharparrowafter a seemingly successfull booting I mean ?01:01
sharparrowso it's not grub01:01
sharparrowUB_CD burning..01:02
jmarsdenfdisk -l would have seen the disk if it was just some software issue on the disk.01:02
sharparrowbios trouble doesn't affect a running os either?01:02
sharparrowbios is way old01:02
sharparrowit really points to hd failure01:03
jmarsdenNot in terms of "does it basically work".  You can get power management issues (esp on laptops) from old BIOSes with broken ACPI or whatever, but not sudden boot failure like this...01:03
jmarsdenOK, I need to go, hope you can find out more the the UBCD diagnostics, but I think you need to go buy a new hard drive, I'm afraid.01:04
sharparrowthanks for help01:05
sharparrowstill burning01:05
jmarsdenOK, bye.01:06
sharparrowbye01:07
luwei大家好阿03:13
highcourterhey folks, i'm trying to get lubuntu diskless client working by pxe-boot and having  root directory on nfs. was following ubuntu DisklessUbuntuHowto guide. On startup there is error "Cannot open root device "(null)" or unknown-block(8,1)... it seems kernel does not have NFS options, right? Do I need to set NFSROOT other than auto too in initramfs.conf?08:56
phillwhighcourter: if it is a kernel issue, then it will affect all the flavours of *buntu as we all use the same one. In fact I am pretty sure that all of Linux shares the same kernel, just on different releases. You may get an answer if you ask on #ubuntu-beginners-team if any of the guru's are up and about. Sorry I cannot help you better.10:49
highcourteralright, thx anyways10:50
mewayHow do I make my volume output louder?16:29
mewayubuntu is much louder16:29
gumushi all16:42
gumusLubuntu doesn't recognize my built in camera . Can anyone help me with that?16:42
jmarsdenmeway: in LXTerminal, run alsamixer and set PCM volume level higher.17:04
gumusguys17:06
silverarrowhi17:07
jmarsdengumus: What is the vendor and product ID of the webcam ?17:08
jmarsdengumus: Please run    sudo lsusb    and tell us the two 4 digit hex numbers after "ID" in the line that represents the webcam.17:09
gumusjmarsden: OK17:09
gumusjmarsden: it is http://paste.ubuntu.com/681285/17:10
jmarsdengumus: There is no camera listed.  Is it a USB device at all?17:11
jmarsdenExample: mine shows:   Bus 002 Device 002: ID 046d:081b Logitech, Inc.17:11
gumusjmarsden: it's laptop's own camera17:11
gumusjmarsden:  built-in one17:11
jmarsdengumus: Yes, but what sort of device is it :)  No-one can help you get it to work if we do not know what it is... we will need to find out what chip it uses and whether that is supported, and by what driver...17:12
jmarsdengumus: You can try using lspci to see if it is a PCI device, although I think that would be unusual on a laptop.17:13
silverarrowjmarsden, do you remember the hard drive talk form last night?17:13
silverarrowor day, depending upon where you are17:14
jmarsdensilverarrow: Yes.17:14
gumusjmarsden: well OK. I'm an absolute beginner so sorry if ı'm causing some trouble :) just doing it17:14
gumusjmarsden: this is the outcome of lspci.. http://paste.ubuntu.com/681290/17:15
gumusjmarsden: there's one thing says VGA compatible controller ?17:15
silverarrowjmarsden:  I booted ultimate boot cd, no hard drive detected. I booted several times, last just to make puppylinux go  on an usb drive17:15
silverarrowsuddenly, hard drive is back17:15
jmarsdengumus: that is your video card, for screen display, not a webcam.17:15
silverarrowand working?17:15
silverarrowfor no apparent reason,17:15
gumusjmarsden: oh I see. So there's no way to identify my camera? We even don't know whether it's plugged right ?17:16
jmarsdensilverarrow: OK... then back it up *now*.  Then run hard drives tests on it, to check if it has any issues.17:16
jmarsdengumus: Right, it looks to me like it is not "plugged in" - it is not being seen as a USB or PCI device, so we are stuck.17:16
jmarsdengumus: Is there any hardware switch to turn it on and off?17:17
jmarsdensilverarrow: Can you run the diagnostic for the manufacturer of the disk from the UBCD?  Does it say the disk is OK now?17:17
gumusjmarsden: I was just looking for it. Apparently there's not but might there be a hot key for it like  fn + something? I don't see any though17:17
silverarrowyes, oddly enough, it comes out ok.17:18
silverarrowit's a western electrical17:18
jmarsdengumus: I'm not sure what else to suggest... if you boot the laptop into Windows does the webcam "just work"?17:18
jmarsdensilverarrow: Then... I guess keep using it but make regular backups :)17:18
silverarrowyes, i do need to get better with backups17:19
gumusjmarsden: it's been a long time since I booted Windows...I guess I need to give a shot17:19
gumusjmarsden: thanks for all your help anyway. I got the main idea of the solution17:20
jmarsdengumus: If it can't see the webcam either, then I'd guess you have a hardware issue with it of some sort.  If it can... then in theory we could try harder to "find" the device and identify it.17:20
jmarsdenYou're welcome.17:20
gumusok. one more thing17:21
gumusdo you often stay on this channel ?17:21
gumusI'd like to let you know about the result17:21
jmarsdenYes.  I log it more or less 24x7.  When I am home at my my PC, I am usually "listening" here.17:21
gumusgreat! I'm so grateful. Thanks!17:22
jmarsdenYou're welcome.17:22
pete__hi22:49
Unit193!hi22:49
pete__I've recently installed Lubuntu 11.04, and now I'm ready to install dropbox22:49
pete__but all the instructions I find seem to be centred around 10.10...22:49
pete__are there good instructions specific to 11.04 or should I just have a go on the 10.10 ones?22:50
pete__any advice?22:50
Unit193Well, there is a client, but it's mainly built for if you have Nautilus22:51
Unit193It doesn't require it though. Where is this guide?22:51
pete__http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/04/how-to-install-dropbox-in-lubuntu/22:51
pete__PS I run Lubuntu x6422:52
pete__so I'd have to modify that top line anyways22:53
Unit193Take a look here http://www.dropbox.com/downloading?os=lnx22:53
Unit193Those are personal uploaded files in the guide you have22:54
pete__yeah, it doesn't really say about doing it with Lubuntu though...22:55
pete__Mint has it included in their LXDE system...22:55
Unit193It works, but without the file manager integration22:56
pete__sorry Unit193, what works?22:57
Unit193Dropbox from their site22:58
pete__I don't follow.  Dropbox works without file manager integration in Lubuntu if I do what?22:59
Unit193Install the package from the dropbox website22:59
pete__the .deb?23:00
Unit193Yes23:00
pete__and what it just works?23:00
pete__it won't install nautilus?23:01
Unit193I haven't really had problems with it, but what works for me may not work for you23:01
Unit193It didn't, but check to make sure23:01
frankboothfile manager integration can be solved by making a "fake" nautilus script btw23:04
frankboothso it opens pcmanfm instead of trying to open nautilus23:05
pete__frankbooth, how do I do that?23:07
frankboothyou won't have the right-click option obviously (might be solveable somehow however, dunno)23:08
frankboothI create symbolic links however, and place them in the dropbox folder23:09
frankboothbut maybe it's the right-click feature you're after23:11
pete__what right click feature?23:14
pete__I just want it to sync my files, I don't care if it puts those little symbols in the corner like Nautilus did23:14
frankbooth:) true that23:15
frankboothpete__ the guide you pasted doesn't work for 11.04, or?23:15
pete__i followed Unit193 and just installed the deb.  It seems to be going fine and I don't think I have nautilus installed in secret (the way it used to on XFCE systems23:16
frankboothcool23:17
pete__going to sign off for a bit thanks Unit193 and frankbooth for your help and support23:19
pete__P23:19
Unit193Sure! Glad we could help23:19
