SoItBeginsHello?00:05
SoItBeginsI've got a MacBook Pro that I just got, used00:06
SoItBeginsI'm planning to triple-boot from it.00:06
SoItBeginsAs such, I've got a small drive (20GB) to install Ubuntu onto.00:06
SoItBeginsMy only issue is,00:06
SoItBegins32 bit, or 64 bit?00:06
SoItBeginsAnd what is the difference, practically speaking?00:06
ashamsSoItBegins: Hi00:13
SoItBeginsHi.00:13
ashamsSoItBegins: it depends on your machines type00:14
SoItBeginsIt's a MacBook Pro with an Intel Core 2 Duo.00:14
ashamsSoItBegins: let me check00:14
ashamsSoItBegins: almost a 3200:16
SoItBeginsAlmost?00:16
ashamsSoItBegins: yeah ;)00:16
SoItBeginsSo... I should install the 32-bit version, then.00:16
ashamsyes sure00:16
SoItBeginsOK, thanks!00:17
ashamsSoItBegins: yw :D00:17
ashamsbest wishes00:17
SoItBeginsThank you— see ya00:17
SoItBeginsHello!02:37
SoItBeginsI'm writing this from the Ubuntu LiveCD I'm getting ready to install on my MacBook Pro.02:37
SoItBeginsQuick question, though...02:37
SoItBeginsPresently, I've got the MacBook's HD divided into two parts:02:37
SoItBegins150 GB for Mac OS X,02:37
SoItBeginsand 50 GB for Windows.02:38
SoItBeginsCan I install BOTH Windows and Ubuntu on the 50GB? And be able to boot to either?02:38
pleia2I don't know about macs specifically, but on any other system that would be fine02:38
SoItBeginsHow would I handle switching between the OSes?02:40
IAmNotThatGuypleia2, or what about wubi ?02:40
pleia2SoItBegins: again, I don't know about macs but on a regular system it uses a boot loader called grub to select which OS you want to boot in to02:41
SoItBeginsOh. Right.02:41
IAmNotThatGuySoItBegins, you can install Ubuntu inside windows though. Let me find a good channel to ask this question02:41
SoItBeginsSee, I read that Macs have to use Darwin bootloader, or you can't boot Mac OS X...02:41
SoItBegins(The MacBook already has OS X installed. I'm putting Ubuntu and Windows on.)02:42
philipballewSoItBegins, you need the rmi app i beleive02:43
philipballewi think its called that02:43
SoItBeginsHmm.02:48
SoItBeginsDo you think it would be better if I took this to the general channel?02:48
philipballewwell actually what mac book you have?02:49
SoItBeginsMacBook Pro, circa 2008 I believe.02:49
SoItBeginsIntel Core 2 Duo processor family.02:49
SoItBeginsThere's this one guide02:51
SoItBeginshttp://modmyi.com/forums/installation/352141-dual-triple-boot-guide-osx86-linux-mac-windows.html02:51
SoItBeginsThat says I'll have to make three partitions; I can't install BOTH Ubuntu and Windows on the same partition.02:52
philipballewno, you can not02:52
philipballewid make 3 if it was me02:52
SoItBeginsOh, never mind then.02:52
SoItBeginsIf it's separate partitions, then I'm pretty sure I know what to do02:52
philipballewwubi will run., but its not running ubuntu as well as it could02:52
SoItBeginsThanks for all of your help.02:52
philipballewfor sure :)02:53
philipballewid rather run osx then windows, but ubuntu would be better probably02:56

dr0pb3arg'day everyone.16:33
dr0pb3arI have recently bought a new netbook and want to have windows and ubuntu on it. I have installed ubuntu before I shrunk my windows partition right down. Now there is a large unallocated section. I have booted into ubuntu 11.04 and 10.10 to use gparted to resize the ubuntu parition but it has a key symbol next to it and says that it is in use... any suggestions on how to "un-busy" it?16:35
holsteindr0pb3ar: you want to do that from a live CD16:39
holsteinyou'll need to have the hard drive unmounted, and you *should* be able to get what you want done16:40
dr0pb3arthanks for your help. I just figured it out. I had to right click on "linux-swap" and click "swap off". I don't quite understand what that did but it fixed the problem and got rid of the key16:43
geirhaYeah, the liveCD will look for a swap drive on your harddrive and use one if it finds one16:44
geirha*swap partition16:44
geirhaGives your session more virtual memory, which should make it slightly faster16:44
geirhaNo wait, what am I saying.16:45
dr0pb3arthat makes sense.16:46
dr0pb3arwell i'm just glad I figured it out.16:46
dr0pb3arthanks for the help16:46
geirhaYeah, that's what matters. :)16:47
dr0pb3arsee you all later16:47

SoItBeginsHelp! I just installed Ubuntu, and instead of the GNOME window system that was on the LiveCD, I've got this Unity system which I'm having serious trouble with. How do I switch back?22:11
SoItBeginsAlternately, are there some preferences I can change to get it more like it was on the LiveCD (with an application bar at the bottom, no Launcher, the Ubuntu menu displays categories instead of a big search thing...)22:16
SoItBegins....going to ask over in #ubuntu.22:21
Unit193SoItBegins: There should be a "fallback" mode in the login screen22:22
SoItBeginsAnd I can make that permanent?22:24
ashamsSoItBegins: There's an option down there22:25
ashamsSoItBegins: and it's permanent22:25
Unit193Unless you change it back ;)22:25
SoItBeginsOh, good. Thank you!22:25
SoItBeginsOK, got another one for you22:26
SoItBeginsI'm running Ubuntu on a MacBook Pro22:26
SoItBeginsIs there a way I can interchangeably use Command in place of the Control key?22:26
SoItBegins(So I can still do Cmnd+Q to quit something, for instance.)22:26
SoItBeginsAs it is, I can tell pressing the command key does *something*, but I'm not really sure what.22:27
ashamsSoItBegins: That's a hard one22:27
* ashams Researching22:28
Unit193Winkey isn't it?22:28
SoItBeginsWhen I run Windows, Windows uses it as the Winkey, yes.22:28
Unit193Yeah, that's what I was saying, I thinks it's the win/meta key in Ubuntu22:29
ashamsSoItBegins: would you please check System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts, and see if it has what you're looking for?22:31
SoItBeginsHang on22:32
* ashams hanging on22:33
SoItBeginsKeyboard Shortcuts doesn't seem to have much, but Keyboard Layouts has something that might be useful.22:33
SoItBeginsRegarding key behaviors...22:33
SoItBegins(System > Preferences > Keyboard > Layouts tab)22:33
SoItBeginsYeah, in 'Keyboard Layout Options', we have22:33
ashamsSoItBegins: Aren't you trying to use the Ctrl key instead of WinKey ?22:34
SoItBeginsNo, I'm trying to use the WinKey instead of the Ctrl key.22:34
SoItBeginsSo that if an app has the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+V to paste, I can press (WinKey)+V instead.22:35
ashamsOh! I see22:35
* ashams researching more22:35
ashamsSoItBegins: It takes some time, I'll try asking ppl22:40
SoItBeginsOK, thanks.22:41
jeffreyjones744i have a problem with a hp laptop which ubuntu 10.04 lts is installed. the laptop will not turn off when you power down. any help22:41
SoItBeginsAshams: I'm going to be off for just a second - Software updates.22:46
ashamsSoItBegins: ok22:47
SoItBeginsBack.22:51
SoItBeginsHey, I solved the keys problem!22:53
SoItBeginsThe trick is to go into System > Preferences > Keyboard > Layouts tab, then click Options,22:53
SoItBeginsand then, under 'Alt/Win key behavior', select "Control is mapped to Win keys (and the usual Ctrl keys)".22:53
SoItBeginsAnd then restart.22:54
ashamsSoItBegins: Great :)23:00
SoItBeginsThanks for your help23:01
ashamsSoItBegins: Rather thank you for the new info23:01
ashams:D23:01
SoItBeginsThe trick is the restart. I tried messing with that box before and it didn't do anything until I restarted.23:02
ashamsyeah, it's not mentioned anywhere23:02
ashamsthey should add such note to the app23:02
ashamsjeffreyjones744: Hi23:03
SoItBeginsashams: Actually, here's another question for you.23:04
SoItBeginsI have Mac OS X installed on a partition on another drive.23:04
ashamsSoItBegins: yes23:05
SoItBeginsI foolishly forgot to allow others access to my OS X user account, so I'm trying to access my files with little avail.23:05
SoItBeginsEven using sudo just has Ubuntu still say "you're not the owner, you can't change the permissions"; do I need to use the command line to unlock the files, or do I just have to boot into OS X and do it there?23:06
ashamsSoItBegins: I think I khnow how to23:06
ashamsHit Alt+F2, then type gksu, it'll open a box, type nautilus, enjoy your files23:07
ashamsthis will alow you to read use nautilus as a root, you can then change permissions of those files23:08
SoItBeginsWhoa, cool.23:08
SoItBeginsUh-oh.23:09
ashamsSoItBegins: problem?23:09
SoItBeginsJournaled HFS+ drive = read-only.23:10
SoItBeginsI know how to fix this one, fortunately.23:10
ashamsSoItBegins: What's the trick?23:10
SoItBeginsBoot into OS X, turn journaling off.23:10
SoItBeginsNot optimal, but it works.23:11
SoItBeginsashams?23:42
SoItBeginsI found a solution to the user thing, too.23:42
SoItBeginsOne more elegant than the permissions...23:43
ashamsSoItBegins: Really, what is it?23:43
SoItBeginsI read an article on the web, that said if you change your UID to that of the equivalent Mac OS X user, you gain that user's permissions.23:43
SoItBeginsSo I did.23:43
SoItBeginsFull access.23:43
ashamsSoItBegins: Hey, that's so smart23:44
SoItBeginsThe only catch is that you have to modify /etc/login for it to accept User#502 as a valid user in the login screen thereafter.23:44
SoItBeginsI think the article was on LifeHacker.23:44
ashamsSoItBegins: I'll find it23:44
SoItBeginsOh, here we go.23:44
SoItBeginssuperuser.com/questions/84446/how-to-mount-a-hfs-partition-in-ubuntu-as-read-write23:45
ashamsSoItBegins: Cooool :D23:46
SoItBeginsThanks for all your help and getting me started on this!23:46
ashamsSoItBegins: Thanks to you tooooooooo :D23:47
