marknighHi y'all,  I installed 11.10 beta today. Would not boot. Tried to reinstall from my usb pen drive, it booted. It won't boot without the pen drive and boots right up with it in. Any thoughts?02:11
urlin2umarknigh, sounds like you got grub on the pendrive, boot to 11.10I will give you the commands to put grub in the HD's mbr.02:13
=== tardis is now known as rww
marknighok02:15
urlin2umarknigh, the HD and pendrives get reversed at times, so once in run sudo fdisk -l  to confirm the hd as sda or sdb, or another set, no partition numbers needed.02:16
marknighi set it up as sda02:17
marknighi'll check02:17
urlin2umarknigh, you may have had the pendrive being read a sda though they get reversed.02:17

knightstalkerHello,on 11.10 I am having problems with nautilus search box, anyone have the same issue?07:30
Stanley00knightstalker: would you please be more spec on the error?07:31
Stanley00*problem*07:31
knightstalkerWell,In 9.10 and above(and probably the other releases as well),I could type the whole word to search for a filename, but here, search box disappears after 1-2 letters and when the 3rd letter is inputed it will search for a filename starting with 3rd letter07:32
knightstalkerBtw,I am not talking about clicking search button and...,I am talking about typing letters when you are on a folder07:35
Stanley00knightstalker: never try that, but let me see a moment..07:35
knightstalkerokay =)07:35
Stanley00knightstalker: work fine with me, may be you break up too long?07:36
knightstalkererm,no07:36
knightstalkerI type pretty fast actually07:36
knightstalkerI think I can take a movie from it :p07:36
Stanley00knightstalker: well, then I dont know, it works fine with me.07:37
knightstalkerWeird07:37
knightstalkerIt can be hardwares,Ubuntu runs different on every computer I tried07:37
knightstalkerlol, and, while searching through the search button and while search is in progress, there is one way to cancel the search(using the red button in the bottom),and funny part is,that dodges my clicks,I mean when I try to cancel the search,I can not07:38
knightstalkerthat is not reproduce able as well over there Stanley00?07:39
Stanley00hehe, it's weird about the cancel :))07:40
Stanley00knightstalker: I cant click at all07:40
knightstalkerwoah07:40
knightstalkerso that IS reproduce able?07:40
knightstalkerso damn hardware wasn't to blame this time :P07:41
Stanley00I dont know either.07:41
urlin2uI,m afraid to hit the search box so far it crashes my set up.07:41
knightstalkerlol07:41
knightstalkernot here07:41
knightstalkerI did a fresh install anyways, ubiquity crashed trying to update my ubuntu07:42
knightstalkerso I formatted the HDD completely :307:42
urlin2uhave the latest kernel here goes.07:42
knightstalkerMe too07:42
urlin2uwhoa works now.07:42
Stanley00knightstalker: I rarely let it update while install, just do that after all. and hopefully, it's work for me :D07:43
knightstalker^.^,so can you try searching for example mp3 in whole file system(I know its pretty stupid, but not doing that search will be done fast enough that the bug can not be viewed),and try to cancel the search without closing the whole window07:43
knightstalkerusing the red X in the bottom07:43
Stanley00knightstalker: ah! you can press space to cancel it, since it have focus on default...07:45
urlin2uI even have transparent conky working gnome3 in fedora had problems with conkies.07:47
knightstalkerwhat about:07:52

yellabsthanks07:58
yellabs:)07:58
knightstalkerwelcome :p07:58
yellabsis there an bug in the installer ?07:59
knightstalkerjbicha,if it exists,I mean it exists on my device, and it hurts me when my sister is sleeping and I need to turn on the computer07:59
knightstalkernot sure about other devices/hardwares07:59
yellabsat first boot , it somehow misses an picture or something07:59
knightstalkerOh,right :p07:59
knightstalkeryellabs,my installer was also on a black background07:59
yellabsyeah , right, but i think its searching for an picture, or the slideshow08:00
yellabsor something, wich is missing08:00
yellabsmaybe the team is working on an new slideshow ?08:01
yellabsfor Ubiquity08:03
knightstalkerProbably, because the current slideshow while installing is identical to 11.0408:03
knightstalkerand they release new slideshows for each version08:03
yellabsokey..08:03
jbichaknightstalker: if you have a hardware mute button, use that; there's a way to disable the login sound but I'll have to investigate how since it looks slightly different in 11.1008:04
yellabsseems to be an bug report about it here : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/83174308:04
ubottuLaunchpad bug 825259 in nvidia-common (Ubuntu Natty) "duplicate for #831743 File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/NvidiaDetector/nvidiadetector.py", line 87, in __get_value_from_name v = int(name) - ValueError: invalid literal for int() with base 10: '173-updates'" [High,Fix committed]08:04
knightstalkerjbicha,ah,never tried that on 11.10,but on 11.04,my computer got busy running apps and desktop and mute button started functioning AFTER the sound is played08:06
knightstalkerso no use,but will try on next boot to see if it works on new version08:06
yellabscant you find the sound in startup applications ?08:07
yellabsits called gnome login sound , or something simular08:07
yellabson the right top of the gnome menu where also system settings are you find08:08
knightstalkerno gnome login sound/login sound in dash, yellabs, even if that existed,it doesn't justify having a useless sound settings in LightDM08:08
yellabsstartup applications08:08
knightstalkerlet me see08:08
yellabsoh08:08
yellabsokey08:09
yellabsjust a thought08:09
knightstalkernp =)08:09
knightstalkerI'll try that for now,thanks08:09
yellabsis it possible to move the gnome menu from top to bottum ?08:12
yellabsor is it called unity menu ?08:12
yellabs:P08:12
jbichayellabs: no, it's not possible to move either the launcher (the left bar) or the menu bar (the top bar)08:14

HewI've just upgraded from natty to oneiric. After restarting and logging in, I'm presented with the background wallpaper and the "file, edit" etc menubar, that's it. There's no sign of a unity interface. Anyone familiar with this problem, or have an idea what I need to change?08:18
Volkodavsame here but only in gnome08:20
Volkodavunity and xfce works fine08:20
Stanley00Hew: oneiric just on beta testing, so upgrade is not a wise idea.08:20
Volkodavactually gnome was fine too until I changed the background08:20
yellabsdid the live version run alright ?08:21
yellabstake a read here, maybe it helps08:24
yellabshttp://askubuntu.com/questions/37910/after-login-desktop-appears-but-theres-no-menu-bar-and-no-dash08:24
yellabsif not, we have to find an other answer... :)08:25
yellabsan other option is to backup your data to external usb drive or media, and just do an clean reinstall08:25
yellabsbut i understand thats not what you really would want in the first place..08:26
HewStanley00, I understand it's in beta, which is why I waited for beta 1 rather than jumping into alphas this cycle. However as this is the appropriate testing support channel, is there any idea how to fix this problem? Or is unity being broken a known issue.08:33
Stanley00Hew: I just suggest that if you want to test oneiric, install a fresh, along side your primary, working OS is a good idea ;)08:35
HewStanley00, so upgrading to oneiric is expected to break unity for beta? Is this a bug I should report?08:35
Stanley00Hew: I just say it safer to fresh install, I rarely use dist-updagrade or something like that, so, i dont know at last.08:37
Hewok, thanks for your help Stanley0008:39
micahgHew: I think it is supposed to work08:39
micahgHew: please file a bug with ubuntu-bug if it's reproducible08:39
TrewasHew: you could also try by creating a new user (empty homedir), so old settings don't potentially break something08:39
Hewmicahg, ok I'll restart again and see what happens.08:40
HewTrewas, good point Trewas I'll try that too08:40
Hewthe missing unity problem was not reproducible.. after logging out and in again unity has appeared. Looks like a one-off after upgrading.09:14
Stanley00^ that's why I didn't use upgrade at all :D09:16

AnAntHello, I am upgrading to oneiric now, and I noticed that the following packages are being removed: indicator-applet-session, indicator-me, indicator-applet-appmenu, indicator-applet-complete, gnome-panel   is that normal ?09:40
Stanley00AnAnt: yes, as long as your system still working  ;)), I think09:40
AnAntbut why are those removed ?09:41
AnAntare they replaced with something else ?09:41
micahgAnAnt: indicator-me has been replaced with indicator-session09:41
jbichathe indicator-applets don't work in Oneiric yet and you should be able to reinstall gnome-panel after you upgrade09:42
jbichathere are still GNOME 2 panel applets that haven't been ported to gnome-panel 3 though...09:43
topyliStanley00: ah yes, i remember that's what it's called in the gnome-shell notification area10:01
topyliStanley00: i had to postpone my unity testing  for now though, because it keeps crashing :)10:01

sagaciok so I'm having trouble now with the 3G internet connection. I have a Huawei E1762 and up until this latest update of networkmanager, it's been working flawlessly, I've tried reinstalling and fiddling around with it but it just comes up at Modem network ... disonnected - you are now offline - on the notification box. Is there any workarounds and/or bugs about this?10:15
sagaciis there anywhere I can check for error logs, etc?10:15
topylii think network-mangler writes logs to /var/log/syslog10:17
topylinot sure though10:17

topyliin the meantime, you can get connected with 'what's that nice commandline program for this whose name i forget'10:18

Stanley00falstaff: is that an video card?12:49
falstaffStanley00, no, a 3d driver as far as i know...12:50
falstaffStanley00, I've got a nividia graphic card12:50
Stanley00falstaff: I think, when you have your driver fully install, it will be unity 3d by default?12:51
falstaffoneiric seems to come with nueveau by default, I wanted to try that one12:51
* Stanley00 never heard about nueveau...12:52
BluesKajfalstaff, look in additional drivers for the recommended nvidia driver , nouveau is the default and is only used due to it's stabiliity on without SD or DR12:56

Stanley00goshawk: then, you just have to manually edit grub.cfg file :D12:59
goshawkStanley00, i did12:59
goshawkStanley00, but having this behavior by default on ubuntu server does not make the distribution suitable for server IMHO13:00

goshawkw813:00
BluesKaj=013:00
BluesKaj?13:00
rigvedhi everyone.13:01
goshawkyeah13:01
goshawkfrom =-1 to =013:01
goshawkin 00_header13:01
goshawkBluesKaj, i suggest to change it for at least ubuntu server13:02
rigvedi am using the latest beta version. my unity session seems to have crashed. the unity launcher does not load. unity --replace gets stuck. but everything is working fine in all the other accounts on this laptop.13:02
* Stanley00 didnt notice that 00_header have that option :D13:02
BluesKajgoshawk, edit /etc/default/grub, not the cfg  file13:02
BluesKajthen make sure you sudo update-grub , goshawk13:03
goshawkBluesKaj,  yeah i did and i fixed13:03
goshawkmodifying 00_header as suggested in stackoverflow13:03
goshawkw813:03
Stanley00BluesKaj: I think he know what to do then, he just give an feedback in update-grub, I think.13:03
rigvedunity is no longer working. it is working in all the other accounts on this computer but not in my account. unity --replace gets stuck. can anyone help?13:04
rigvedi was checking ccsm when unity stopped working.13:04
BluesKajgoshawk, what is w8?13:04
goshawk00_header line 23313:04
Stanley00rigved: did unity --reset do the trick?13:04
goshawkfrom13:04
goshawk  set timeout=-113:04
goshawkto13:04
goshawk  set timeout= 013:04
rigvedStanley00: i will try that now.13:04
goshawkBluesKaj, what i'm asking if not a solution, i already did it. I'm suggesting to change that odd behavior which will make a lot of server stuck without any reason if there is a power cut13:05
goshawkshould i open a bug about that ?13:06
Stanley00goshawk: power cut may be make some system failler, so stuck in there is not a bad idea13:06
rigvedStanley00: unity --reset also seems to be stuck. the last line is: "Initializing session options...done"13:06
Stanley00rigved: just wait then13:06
rigvedStanley00: even unity --replace seems to be stuck at the same line when i tried it earlier.13:07
rigvedStanley00: ok. i will wait13:07
Stanley00rigved: it needs more time to do13:07
BluesKajgoshawk, also make sure Hidden timeout is =013:07
Stanley00rigved: did you upgrade from natty?13:08
rigvedStanley00: no. fresh install13:08
goshawkStanley00, you said right *may* . but if there are no failures why do i get stuck on a grub menu... it's a really stupid behavior13:08
goshawkexpecially on remote servers13:08
Stanley00goshawk: maybe you are right about that.13:09
Stanley00rigved: then old home folder?13:10
BluesKajgoshawk, I'm trying help you , but this is the first time I've heard of this problem...have you tried asking in #grub ?13:11
goshawkBluesKaj, i'm trying to find the stackoverflow question13:11
goshawkit's a known thing13:11
goshawkbut nobody addressed until now as a bug13:11
goshawkBluesKaj, gimme more time to get the stackoverflow question..13:12
goshawkBluesKaj, http://serverfault.com/questions/269387/how-to-force-grub-to-boot-no-human-input-regardless-previous-booting-failure13:12
goshawksetting GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT in default/grub.cfg does nothing13:13
goshawksince that fucking "-1" is hardcoded in 00_header13:13
goshawkhttp://paste.pocoo.org/show/469893/13:14
goshawkBluesKaj, if u want u can try by yourself... reproducing the behavior is really simple... just install ubuntu beta 1 server, cut the power, make it boot ;)13:15
BluesKajyeah right :)13:15
goshawkso now... should i file a bug to give to this problem the proper attention ?13:16
BluesKajgoshawk, btw , watch the language pls, but we understand you frustration13:17
goshawkok sorry13:17
BluesKajyour13:17
goshawkBluesKaj, my frustration is that i've 2 server stuck at 1500km away from me due to this thing...13:18
BluesKajgoshawk, seems hidden time out should be = -1, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=140351713:24
goshawki'll try that on my desktop pc...13:26
BluesKajgoshawk, check this as well, http://blog.computerant.com/2010/03/22/grub-2-bug/13:27
goshawkBluesKaj, the second one is like i did13:27
goshawki just put 013:27
goshawkbecause -1 is manual intervention13:27
goshawkthe ubuntu forum contraddicts it13:27
BluesKajbbiab , goot boot into windows for a few mins13:28
goshawkthis is why i told u that i'll test that13:28
rigvedStanley00: sorry i went away.13:30
Stanley00rigved: never mind about that ;)13:31

Stanley00rigved: if you dont need your old config any more, feel free to delete all your config file13:36
erkan^what mean "clear" by the menu?13:36
Stanley00erkan^: I dont get it either :))13:36

Stanley00rigved: at least .config .compiz* .dbus .gnome* .gconf13:38

erkan^I see that is not very add-ons by Thunderbird13:43

penguin42what do you mean HP reports it's muted - an LED somewhere?15:54
knightstalkerYeah15:55
knightstalkeran LED which turns red15:55
knightstalkeror white15:55
penguin42knightstalker: Best to report it anyway, I'd still say against audio (closest thing); if it's just the LED it's not too important, but it's still a bug15:55

Barridusyeah i read that before, i meant out of box without having to type command line commands Ian_Corne21:56
Barriduslike as transparently as other flash media file systems such as fat32 or ntfs21:56
Ian_Corneoh :)21:58
Ian_CorneI don't know21:59
dupondjeSome small question.22:04
dupondjeDoes the primary group always needs to be the same as the username ?22:04

dupondjeadded myself to my own group again22:25
Ian_Cornedupondje: well, if you do it after your home directory gets created22:25
dupondjeand it worked22:25
dupondjeweird :)22:25
Ian_Corneit could mean trouble yes22:25
dupondjewhy ? everything in my home dir is jean-louis:users22:26
Ian_Cornewell22:26

VanillaliteHi all!22:31
Ian_CorneHello!22:31
=== rww is now known as tardis
Vanillaliteokay I get a weird error when I run sudo apt-get update22:33
Vanillaliteit asks for my pw fetches the packages then it ends with22:33
VanillaliteW: GPG error: http://ppa.launchpad.net oneiric Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available:22:33
Vanillaliteany idea why this is messed up to begin with and what I should do as a fix?22:34
tardis!gpg-err22:34
tardis!gpgerr22:34
ubottuGetting GPG errors after adding custom repositories? Find the GPG keyword for the repository (it's 437D05B5 for the standard ones) and run « sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com <key> »22:34
tardisbecause you didn't use add-apt-repository or you did and the keyserver was broken at the time22:34
Vanillalitehmmm ok22:36
ActionParsnipquiet tonight22:36
Vanillalitehow can I tell what repository it is?22:36
Vanillalitebtw after the "the public key is not available"22:37
Vanillaliteit gives me NO_PUBKEY22:37
Vanillalitethen a keystring22:37
ActionParsnipVanillalite: if you give the output of:  sudo apt-get update I may be able to advise. I am guessing you are missing a GPG key from a repo22:37
ActionParsnipVanillalite: what is the key string?22:38
VanillaliteNO_PUBKEY EC2FD9F10377B4EF22:38
ActionParsnipVanillalite: sudo apt-key adv --recv-key --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com EC2FD9F10377B4EF22:39
Vanillalitek22:39
Vanillalitealrighty then I do sudo apt-get update no errors now thank you guys and gals :D22:40
VanillaliteI am fixed :D22:40
ActionParsnipyay22:40
Vanillaliteany reason why it would be messed up to begin with?22:41
ActionParsnipif you use the add-apt-repository command, it sorts all that for you22:41
ActionParsniprather than editting sources.list22:41
Vanillalitenormally I honestly just add PPAs in properties in the software center and don't use the terminal22:42
ActionParsnipVanillalite: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pmjdebruijn/chocolate-doom-release      for example22:43
Vanillaliteyeah I gotcha I guess I'll use the terminal from now on :P22:44
VanillaliteI hadn't ever had problems the other way so I just always did that lol22:44
ActionParsnipVanillalite: saves having to mess around waiting for software centre to run, just straight to business22:44
Vanillalitemy cli knowledge is low but I'm trying to learn lol22:44
ActionParsnipVanillalite: younow have an extra bullet on your belt22:45
Vanillalitethanks people!22:45
ActionParsnipword22:45
