pmatuliskalkin-: investigate 'postfix rewrite sender'00:09
kalkin-pmatulis: thanks, thats exactly what i needed00:10
TechnicusI have Ubuntu Server Edition installed on VirturalBox.  Guestadditions is installed, how do I change the resolution so that when I go full screen it will fill the screen?02:10
jmarsdenTechnicus: Why do you need to?  Just ssh to the server VM from a GUi terminal of your choice :)02:12
TechnicusOk . . . that is a preferred option.  I am having trouble with ssh.02:13
TechnicusI set the network adapter to NAT and Host Only Adapter, but with Host-Only Adapter, I can connect with SSH but there is no connection with the internet.  Someone suggested that I mak two adapters, but I do not yet understand how to do that.02:17
jmarsdenTechnicus: Set networking to Bridged, and bridge you eth0 (or whatever the main NIC on your host machine is)02:21
jmarsdenYou will need to shut down the VM, change the setting, and restart the VM.02:22
Technicusjmarsden: Ok so I just did that.02:33
jmarsdenOK.  So now your VM has an Ip address on your local (real, physical) subnet, right?  So ssh from a terminal emulator on the host PC to the IP of the VM.02:34
TechnicusPlease explain how to find the answer to your question . . .02:35
jmarsdenWhat IP address does your BM now have?02:35
jmarsden*VM.02:35
Technicus192.168.56.10/2402:37
jmarsdenOK, so from a terminal on the host, do   ssh you@192.168.56.1002:37
Technicusssh: connect to host 192.168.56.10 port 22: Connection timed out02:38
jmarsdenDid you install openssh-server in the VM ?02:38
jmarsdenIf not, do so :)02:39
TechnicusIt is installed.02:41
TechnicusI was able to connect to it with the host-only network adapter.02:41
jmarsdenThen either it is not running, or that is not really the IP of the VM, or you have a firewall on the VM...02:41
jmarsdenYes, but host only is relatively useless for a server... it can't serve anything to anyone except the local host if you do that :)02:42
jmarsdenOK, on the VM, what does     sudo netstat -ntlp |grep :22   output ?02:42
TechnicusJust a moment . . . there was an error and I have to restart it.  It is slow to restart.02:44
jmarsdenIt shoudn't be slow to restart... unless you don't have enough RAM for it?02:45
TechnicusHow much ram do you suggest?02:45
jmarsdenWell, for a bare server doing nothing, 256MB is enough... but you need to really have that real physical RAM free for it, so it doesn't swap02:45
TechnicusLISTEN02:49
TechnicusSo It appears to be functional now.02:52
TechnicusI can at least SSH from the host to the guest not to see if the internet connection is avaliable.02:53
jmarsdenLooks like you are all set. ping 8.8.8.8 from the VM to check internet connectivity02:58
TechnicusIt is working!02:58
TechnicusThanks a lot!02:58
TechnicusWould it be difficult to setup for a static IP address?02:58
jmarsdenNo, see the relevant part of the Ubuntu Server Guide.02:59
jmarsdenhttps://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/network-configuration.html   and look for "Static IP Address Assignment"03:00
TechnicusThis is great . . . thanks lots!03:01
jmarsdenYou're welcome.03:02

ubunim trying to install ubuntu10.04 server into a HP Proliant g360 g3. when i get to the partitioning part it says the disc is too small??? (btw im a noob)06:40
airtonixubun: if you simply typed a number in the partition size assuming it would be gigabytes then that is your problem08:38
airtonixubun: it's megabyes by default when you don't add "GB" to the end of the number08:39
bdmcFolks,  I have a problem with an upgrade that I am working on.  The machine was running 9.04 and when we rebooted it for maintenance, the machine owner saw the message that said to run do-upgrade ( the upgrade to Natty ) and asked that that be done.  Unfortunately, we are now in a state where none of the recent kernels 2.6.38-x seem to run at all, and the original kernel, 2.6.28-14-server will at least boot, but there are some11:39
maxbYour message was truncated at "... there are some"11:40
* maxb spends a good few seconds doing the mental maths to establish that 9.04 is jaunty11:41
bdmcsorry. it went on to say that there are serious errors ( can't read /proc, etc ) so the machine is basically dead.  Any suggestions?11:42
maxbI feel you've not fully explained the situation, because the ubuntu upgrader would never have gone directly from jaunty to natty11:43
bdmcand yet it did -- there was only the one command.  However, the machine has been given updates continually, but never rebooted, so you're right, things have been updated, just running on the old kernel until now.11:45
bdmcmaxb: yes, we have tried downloading various kernels, including "linux-image-server" which said that it was installing, but I can't find it.11:52
maxbI'm sorry, but at the current level of detail of your explanation, I really have no insight into what state your machine is in11:53
maxbI can definitely say, however, that the Ubuntu *supported* upgrade processes are only from one release to the next immediately following it, and from one LTS to the next LTS11:54
maxbI am extremely sceptical that do-release-upgrade would have violated this11:55
bdmcSorry.  I have been up for more than 24 hours, and may not be thinking as well as I should.  Obviously, the do-release-upgrade was misled if the system was in any other state.  I can't get into it at the moment ( I am on the other side of the continent from the machine. )11:56
bdmcCould it have had its sources list updated to maverick and updates done properly successfully, even without the kernel being updated ( rebooted ).11:57
maxbIt's possible11:58
maxbPretty hideously unwise to have performed an upgrade to a new release series and not have rebooted, thoguh12:00
bdmcTwo questions.  One, if such a thing was done, and therefore most of the machine should have been in a "maverick" state, why would a Natty upgrade with a Natty kernel have failed so?  ( Yes, there was, shall we say, resistance to rebooting while the system was "running."12:01
bdmcSecondly, during the Natty upgrade, I did see a couple of error messages about improper version numbers.  One was libxen3, if I remember correctly, and the other was cnews.12:02
maxbI'm afraid you're not really giving enough info about the failures to infer anything useful12:03
maxbYou've said there's some problem booting the natty kernel - but what?12:03
maxbAs for the error messages during the upgrade, I'd need to see the exact messages, or a closer approximation of the exact messages, to understand what they were complaining about12:04
maxbI suggest sleeping, and coming back here once you have access to the server12:04
maxb:-)12:05
bdmcTrue.  I am going to call it a night for a while.  I am trying to see through someone else's eyes, too, which is a problem.  He has just told me that he was paying attention during the boot, and it looks as if it was stopping on a fsck error.12:13
maxba fsck error is a whole different issue entirely12:15
maxbyou really really need to get some exact error messages to better understand the problem12:16
bdmcI agree.  I was fighting to see what was happening during the boot process, and finally got that message from him.  The system is back up and running now, so I am going to get some sleep and "finish" later.  Thanks for the encouragement.12:18
shadeslayerhi, i need some help with lvm, i'm completely new to it and was wondering how to increase my swap size13:51
shadeslayerwell .. i think i need to shrink my root partition first to free some space ...14:02

TechnicusHello . . . I have a server running ( this is the first time I have ever managed a server ), I have configured it for ZoneMinder video surveillance following the tutorial: < http://www.zoneminder.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_Server_10.10_32-bit_with_ZoneMinder_1.24.2_from_source,_FFmpeg,_libjpeg-turbo,_Webmin,_Cambozola >.  I am having troubles logging into the web admin interface.  How do I make a user, my Ubuntu username an17:19

dxd828Hey guys, do you know if it would be possible to update cms systems like wp with puppet on multiple servers?19:32
SlybootsHi20:17
SlybootsIm having some serious issues with Ubuntu 11.04 with an AMD Fusion motherboard.. any ammount of network traffic seems to cuase the machine to kernel panic20:18
SlybootsGet a few messages about "NOZH: Local_softirq_pending 08"; Followed by "BUG : unable to handle kernel paging request at ffff88022c5c3000"20:19
SlybootsThen kernel panic20:19
multiHYPhi guys, is there something like homebrew for mac for the ubuntu?22:21
multiHYPim running 11.04 server22:22
multiHYPwhy is my server by default has no user directories? public_html or pictures or documents etc.?22:23
multiHYPwhere to go if i have ubuntu server setup/config questions?22:24
PicimultiHYP: Here is a good place, but I'm not sure why you would think that you should have 'user directories' by default.22:26
multiHYPcause in the uni we used to have those by default, i guess it was made by the system admin22:26
PiciYou'd need to set that up yourse,lf, I *think* apache's mod_public does that, but don't quote me on that.22:27
multiHYPmight actually try nginx22:30
multiHYPsomeone suggested for scala and lift development thats better...22:30
=== davros- is now known as davros
leniosapache mod_userdir does that22:34
leniosor are we talking about /home dir for each user?22:35
multiHYPlenios_: no just the ~/public_html/ or wherever else I shall put my .html .php .war pages and applications.23:04
multiHYPalthough somebody recommended me to use nginx23:04
multiHYPthere is no easy way of installing nginx alone without 100 different settings and adjustments on linux ubuntu 11.04.23:19
multiHYPdo i need to open the same udp ports as well for ssh or any other case?23:48
multiHYPim using ufw23:48
qman__SSH does not use UDP23:49
qman__also, ubuntu is secure by default -- that means no extra functions are installed23:50
multiHYPso 80 for webserver, 22 or any other custom for ssh, 443 for https23:50
qman__if you want things like userdir, you have to set it up23:50
multiHYPwell i had to setup iptables, thats not exactly secure by default23:50
qman__yes, it is23:50
qman__even though iptables has no rules by default, there is also nothing listening by default23:50
multiHYPmaybe to outsiders, which i still don;t think it is, but i want it even sorted for multiple users..23:51
multiHYPi did setup iptables and now ufw, so hopefully iptables settings are gone23:51
multiHYPsftp uses the same port as ssh, even if i customised ssh?23:52
qman__yes23:52
qman__sftp is a function of the SSH server23:52
multiHYPalso only tcp right?23:52
qman__it is not separate23:52
multiHYPok, thanks qman__ :)23:52
qman__no firewall is configured out of the box in order to make it easier to set things up, but there also is nothing running and listening out of the box23:53
qman__so unless you make changes, it is, in fact, secure23:53
multiHYPyes obviously, but if you run something like webserver, ssh or sftp connections etc then things need to be secured.23:55
multiHYPim in that phase now23:55
multiHYPhow can i remove the previous settings i specified for uptables? i want to stick to ufw since its much easier.23:56
qman__ufw is just a frontend to iptables23:56
multiHYPi remember some /etc/iptables > and the iptables-save/-restore <23:57
qman__it depends on how you configured it23:57
multiHYPso how can i double check the state of iptables now?23:57
multiHYPnano /etc/iptables….23:57
qman__if you just created some rules via 'sudo iptables ...' then they will be overwritten by UFW23:57
multiHYPno i overwrote the file and had .test.rules and a default preup and all that23:58
multiHYPi followed a good article but forgot to bookmark it23:58
qman__then you'll have to change the files back to default23:58
multiHYPdon't know what was the default :(23:58
qman__though UFW may override it, I don't know enough about UFW and how specifically it interacts with iptables23:59
qman__you can always check the current firewall with sudo iptables -L23:59
multiHYPyes it overwrites i just want to double check just in case23:59
