=== The_Fred is now known as TheFred === bacon is now known as christel [02:13] ooooo so tempting to build a reprap machine! [03:23] HazRPG: hey man [03:23] HazRPG: You about? [03:23] sammmmmmmm: sup [03:23] sammmmmmmm: yeah ^_^ [03:23] HazRPG: I spoke to you before about my piles [03:23] sammmmmmmm: ah yeah [03:23] sammmmmmmm: how'd it go? [03:24] HazRPG: I haven't woken early enough to see a GP yet [03:24] HazRPG: But I just did the fattest dump in my life. It took me half an hour and was the size of my foot [03:25] o.O [03:25] HazRPG: It reached the toilet water before it came out fully [03:25] HazRPG: Amazingly, I didn't bleed from it [03:25] yeah that's not going to help matters [03:25] although I know what it like not being awake to do morning stuff [03:25] HazRPG: I touched it and it was so dry and hard [03:26] HazRPG: But then some sloppy stuff came out after it [03:26] tmi for a logged channel ^_^ [03:27] I could probably knock someone out by throwing my stool at them [03:27] heh, now that is saying something - and rather disturbing at the same time :P [03:27] HazRPG: I don't understand why I'm so constipated [03:27] My diet is fine [03:28] stress? [03:28] I drink plenty of liquids [03:28] drinking plenty? [03:28] HazRPG: Hell no [03:28] I'm so laid back [03:28] like I said, fibre can go either way [03:28] I don't consume massive amounts of fibre [03:29] if you have too much fibre... but not enough water... then your going to get constipated, if you have too little fibre, and too much water... then... well... its going to be sloppy :P [03:29] Maybe a bit under nourished, but I wouldn't have thought it'd make it this bad [03:29] I don't drink any water [03:30] I haven't for months [03:30] I drink milk and sometimes Dr Pepper [03:30] not a huge issue, as long as your drinking fluids in general [03:30] cos they're still made with water somewhere [03:30] Then my stools should be sloppy......... [03:30] if you drink lots, its best to put more fibre to your diet [03:30] that will definitely help [03:31] I eat lots of bananas [03:31] best place I get my fibre, samiches and cereals :) [03:31] And I eat cereals [03:32] HazRPG: I probably need an expert to diagnose and recommend solutions [03:32] watch out for bananas! [03:32] HazRPG: Why? [03:32] although its good for fibre, it works both ways [03:32] They have fibre [03:32] its a strange paradox! [03:32] OMGGG [03:32] FFS [03:32] I just want a cure [03:32] 2-3 bananas iirc is a good daily amount [03:33] however, more than that, you'll constipate yourself [03:33] HazRPG: I don't eat more than that [03:33] hmm [03:33] sounds like there's enough fibre in your diet, its just fluids that's your issue then [03:33] HazRPG: Can milk cause constipation? [03:33] it shouldn't [03:33] I drink so much of it [03:34] body, technically speaking, can't properly digest milk iirc (I might be wrong on that one) [03:35] HazRPG: I heard that before, but without solid evidence. [03:35] HazRPG: And my best friend drinks as much, if not more milk than me, and he has no problems [03:36] lactase is an enzyme in the intestine that helps breaks down milk sugars... [03:36] HazRPG: Or at least, never talks about it... [03:36] but not everyone has the same levels of it... so having too much milk can cause issues to some people (esp. people who have very little - or non at all - which causes them to be  lactose intolerance. [03:37] HazRPG: Wouldn't I know if I had that? [03:38] well... you'd know if you were lactose intolerant for sure! [03:38] milk shouldn't be an issue though [03:38] Then I'm not. [03:39] HazRPG: What about chicken? [03:39] I eat a lot of that. [03:39] as do I ^_^ [03:39] favourite meat group ^_^ [03:39] shouldn't cause an issue [03:39] I heard Vikings had big dumps because they eat so much meat. [03:39] but the more meat you eat, the more fibre and water you'd need with it [03:39] s/eat/ate/ [03:40] wouldn't call it wrong [03:40] a friend always told me "don't eat too much meat" as advice to me... however I find that you just need to balance how much fibre/water to go with the number of meat you eat - its hard to work out, but it can be balanced with a bit of mixing and matching to find out :) [03:41] balancing the diet can be a pain! [03:41] cos no 2 people are going to be the same [03:41] HazRPG: And because we're incredibly lazy [03:41] Or I am, at least. [03:42] I've recently started eating 3 of 4 tuna or cheese sandwiches... and that seems to be helping with the amount of fluids I have... [03:42] I eat tunas [03:42] just get your balance of fibre per fluids consumed :) [03:42] I eat cans of it... [03:42] same ^_^ [03:42] HazRPG: And see a GP soonish? [03:43] tuna/chicken/cheese/bread/pizza = my diet :P [03:43] Should I take one of my dumps with me? [03:43] sammmmmmmm: obviously :) [03:43] HazRPG: Love those foods too [03:43] sammmmmmmm: they might not be able to tell you exactly what your body needs, but they can at least guide you in the right direction! [03:44] and definitely get rid of any pains/irritations in that area - which is probably more important to fix really [03:44] HazRPG: not really [03:44] I can live with pain [03:44] I can't live with long-term health problems [03:44] for fruits I tend to drink them more than eat them... fresh cranberry juice is my forte [03:45] I don't eat that much fruit [03:45] sammmmmmmm: well that was more what I was getting at, the pain can be put aside mentally - however it will cause many complications over time [03:45] 1 banana a day [03:45] cranberry is good for the system btw :) [03:45] But I drink milk [03:46] HazRPG: why are you still awake? [03:46] although cranberry is sometimes classed as an acquired taste - but its good for flushing out the system [03:46] HazRPG: I like cranberry juice [03:46] HazRPG: does research support your statement? [03:47] about cranberry? [03:48] HazRPG: I hope my toilet still works... [03:48] HazRPG: yes [03:48] certainly, it's a cranberry juice has a mild diuretic quality [03:48] bah that was fail typing [03:48] HazRPG: why are you still awake? [03:49] have a look at diuretics: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diuretic#Uses [03:49] specifically the uses part [03:49] for some info on cranberry: http://bnf.org/bnf/bnf/current/41001i995.htm [03:50] bah that was a bad link [03:50] HazRPG: Diuretics are often abused by sufferers of eating disorders, especially bulimics, in attempts at weight loss? [03:50] indeed [03:50] My weight is fine [03:51] Optimal BMI [03:51] yeah, but you still need some in your diet - they don't call it balanced for nothing :P [03:51] Balance requires effort and planning... [03:51] Two things I don't like to do [03:51] e.g. my dad's doctor recommended that he should drink lots and lots of cranberry when he had kidney stones [03:52] HazRPG: What are those? [03:52] very nasty is what they are :P [03:52] HazRPG: I've heard of them before [03:52] kidney stones are crystals that form in your kidneys [03:52] HazRPG: What's the technical name for them? [03:52] HazRPG: Crystals?!?!? [03:52] kidney stones is the technical name :P [03:53] HazRPG: lol sounds like slang [03:53] Like piles [03:53] HazRPG: You know so much more about stuff than me [03:53] HazRPG: Why are you so wise? [03:54] I guess if you want to get fully medical its "nephrolithasis" or "renal calculi" ... but don't quote me on those spellings [03:54] sammmmmmmm: my mum's a doctor lol, she kept telling more than I needed to know about stuff to scare me to do things properly [03:54] (she probably wanted me to become a doctor too, but that never happened :P) [03:54] also, google [03:54] I live on google [03:54] and wikipedia [03:55] I like reading about useless facts - because then it actually helps with conversations like this :P [03:55] * HazRPG is a jack of many trades... but master of none lol [03:56] so yeah, cranberry juice - very good for the system [03:56] I'd recommend at least 2 or 3 glasses in a week [03:56] HazRPG: why are you still awake? [03:57] (like I said, you don't need lots of it, but it stops you getting urinary infections, cos your constantly flushing out stuff quicker than it can form in the system ^_^ [03:57] sammmmmmmm: me? I sleep little and odd hours [03:58] HazRPG: sounds like you have a sleeping disorder, or a fancy sleeping schedule [03:58] its a rolling system schedule ^_^ [03:58] HazRPG: Like Arch Linux? [03:58] over time I'll be sleeping in the night then waking in the day... and slowly rotates round [03:58] sammmmmmmm: heh, sorta :P [03:59] HazRPG: Is it wrong for me to be proud of the humongous dump I just did? [03:59] heh, nah lol [03:59] First thing I did was text my friend about it [03:59] haha [03:59] I'd probably do the same [03:59] He'll see the text when he wakes up [03:59] but more because I know he'd get annoyed and think it to be tmi :P [04:00] so you asked me why I'm awake, how come your awake :P? [04:00] HazRPG: My friend won't care, he farts loudly when I'm about... [04:00] HazRPG: I struggle to go to bed and struggle to wake up [04:00] ah [04:00] that sucks [04:01] HazRPG: And I did a massive dump and wanted to talk about it [04:01] ^_^ [04:01] I have that problem too (sleeping) [04:01] And I was going to have a wank but CBA now [04:01] I find sleeping pointless, its more hours I could be doing something else [04:01] HazRPG: At uni, I just shift my sleeping times forward by 2 hours every day. [04:02] I do that [04:02] I know I roughly sleep 6-8hrs [04:02] I wish getting out of bed wasn't so hard [04:02] HazRPG: I sleep 10-14 [04:02] so if I know I need to be up at x time, I make sure to minus 8hrs off that for sleep [04:02] sammmmmmmm: agreed [04:03] HazRPG: Haha if I need to be up when at uni, I skip sleep two nights before, then go to bed early the night before [04:03] So I'm actually going to bed really really late [04:03] at the moment I usually sleep around 15-21 [04:03] 15-21 hours a day? [04:04] no from 3pm to 9pm [04:04] ah okay [04:04] my best friend has naps in the day [04:04] but like I said its rolling ^_^ [04:04] e.g. yesterday I fell asleep at 6pm, and woke up 11pm [04:04] sleep is so lame [04:05] I know what you mean [04:05] I wish I didn't need sleep [04:05] would be so awesome [04:05] like I said, its time I could be doing more stuff (like trawling the internets :P) [04:05] conscious 24/7 [04:05] HazRPG: isn't that a waste of your life? [04:06] I spend my time playing video games [04:06] erm... trawling the internets for food for my brain [04:06] HazRPG: how do you manage your job around your sleep? [04:06] constantly reading useless facts like I said :P [04:06] I work freelance :) [04:07] HazRPG: as what? [04:07] heh, ironically web developer [04:07] I like the internet so much, I want to create more of it :P [04:08] haven't been doing it freelance for long though, it's a recent thing since it fits better with my sleep [04:08] HazRPG: haha [04:08] HazRPG: Your sleep controls your life [04:08] I did work for a company for a year (between college/uni transition) [04:08] and now since I graduated, I decided I don't want to work for a company [04:09] HazRPG: If you slept normally, you could have a 9-5 job [04:09] sammmmmmmm: I could... but a 9-5 job means HAVING to do work you might not want to do [04:09] BTW isn't it unnatural to wake up at 06:30-08:00 every day? [04:09] freelance, means I can picky if I have many clients offering me work :P [04:10] at the moment I have about 2 websites that people want doing, and currently deciding which to take (or possibly take both, if one or the other doesn't mind waiting ) [04:10] sammmmmmmm: VERY unnatural [04:11] lets put it this way, me going to sleep anywhere between 9pm to 2am... means I'll be getting up (naturally) at around 9am-12pm [04:11] 9-5 seems like long and tedious hours [04:11] and that's if I just leave it to my brain to wake itself up, not a clock [04:11] HazRPG: I think people should wake up naturally [04:11] Clocks suck ass [04:11] I find, if I leave myself to my own devices - sleeping at night means I end up sleeping 8-12 hours [04:12] if I sleep during the day... I sleep 6-8hrs [04:12] But that would mean going to bed at like 7-8 [04:12] HazRPG: 6-8 is rubbish [04:12] I like 10-12 [04:12] like I said, currently I sleep 6pm to 12pm [04:12] I prefer 6-8, means I can do more - I'm too hyper naturally [04:13] I currently sleep 05:30 to 16:00 [04:13] why I hate sleep so much [04:14] I've always wanted to try doing what some of the genius artists and inverters use to do [04:14] have constant mini-naps during a day... [04:14] that way you have more hours in your days to work - and overall your brain functions better [04:14] HazRPG: If I had a 9-5 job, I'd have to go to bed at 9 and wake up at 7. Which would mean I'd only have 3 hours of free time a day (if it takes an hour to get home from work) [04:14] (it explains why dogs and cats seem to always be having lots of mini-naps!) [04:14] Busy from 21:00 'til 18:00 the next day [04:15] sammmmmmmm: I know what you mean [04:15] HazRPG: Sure, but it'd involve clocks [04:15] my dad works 9am-2pm, 4pm-9pm each day [04:15] I have no idea how he does it! [04:15] And those 3 hours would be comprised of eating, cleaning and doing chores and stuff [04:16] So 0 minutes to play games, socialise and relax [04:16] I know what you mean :( [04:16] 9-5 is shit [04:16] sammmmmmmm: except weekends ;) [04:16] sammmmmmmm: weekends = PARTY TIME! [04:16] Should be 14:00 to 18:00 [04:16] HazRPG: Weekends are few and far between [04:16] HazRPG: People work like your dad in Spain [04:16] although for most 9-5ers, weekends means cleaning/choirs and just generally just sitting and doing nothing [04:16] They nap in the afternoon [04:17] heh, yeah that's what my dad does! [04:17] I don't know how he does it, I can't nap... AT ALL! [04:17] Why not? [04:17] I suck at it too [04:17] if I nap, it ends up being a full on sleep :P [04:17] lol same [04:17] My best friend is good at it [04:17] so say I got up at 6am... and then napped at say 10am... [04:17] I'd wake up 4pm [04:18] you wouldn't want to nap 4 hours after you wake up [04:18] Or at least I wouldn't [04:18] napping is a hard habit to get into, unless you did it as a kid [04:18] I never did [04:18] I wouldn't, but I've had to do it a few times though [04:18] Parents told me to get a bigass sleep at night [04:18] same [04:19] HazRPG: Is it normal to have a limp left foot and left arm after a HUGE dump? [04:19] and I blame my sleeping pattern because my parents never told me off for play RPG's non-stop when I was a kid [04:19] I would play Final Fantasy for 18hrs at a time [04:19] Could I be having a mini-stroke? [04:19] literally! [04:19] only taking a break for say food, and toilet breaks... [04:19] HazRPG: HAHAHA same about the RPGs [04:20] e.g. my dad would wake up in the morning (around 7-8am) see me... and say "you still up? Make sure you get to school on time!" [04:20] Used to love 'em [04:20] that was about it [04:20] HazRPG: wow [04:20] HazRPG: that's bad [04:21] didn't do me any harm ^_^ [04:21] HazRPG: worose than me [04:21] he was more strict about me being clean, then my sleeping pattern [04:21] my parents were only strict about profanity [04:21] i.e. he would get a broom, and LITERALLY threaten to sweep all the stuff on the floor into the bin [04:22] I was allowed to, but NOT in the house [04:22] that's harsh [04:22] Could I be having a mini-stroke? [04:22] hmm? [04:22] how? [04:22] the fuck? [04:22] HazRPG: Is it normal to have a limp left foot and left arm after a HUGE dump? [04:22] how bout your left side of your face/ [04:22] HazRPG: You missed my earlier messages... [04:22] ?* [04:22] HazRPG: feels fine [04:23] then I doubt it's a stroke [04:23] HazRPG: my foot felt limp and now my forearm feels weird [04:23] try talking aloud [04:23] and my bum aches [04:23] if you can form sentences fine... then your not having a stroke [04:23] HazRPG: lol no, don't want to wake anyone [04:24] whisper ^_^ [04:24] HazRPG: no, I'd look stupid [04:24] hmm the ability to understand things also fades if your having a stroke too [04:24] HazRPG: or im just tired? [04:24] also, inability to see one side of vision [04:24] so if one eye is blurry, then you need to be worried [04:24] HazRPG: or im just short-sighted? [04:24] more likely lack of sleep dude ^_^ [04:25] sammmmmmmm: not unless you see blurryness with your glasses on! [04:25] HazRPG: that reminds me, why do my muscles sometimes ache when I'm sleep deprived? [04:25] also not seeing at all can be possible too [04:25] HazRPG: wow id hate that [04:25] I like being able to see stuff [04:26] (in one eye! its unlikely to have a stroke in both sides of the brain - rare) [04:26] HazRPG: would you rather lose an arm or go blind? [04:26] hmm [04:26] why do my muscles sometimes ache when I'm sleep deprived? [04:26] I'd rather loose an arm, then go blind [04:26] my skills are computer based [04:26] HazRPG: hahah same [04:26] I'd rather type with one hand, then to not be able to see what it is I'm coding [04:26] HazRPG: what about both arms? [04:27] hmm, that would be hard [04:27] don't think I could sit and talk to my computer all day long [04:27] yeah, would be [04:27] lol same [04:27] eyetracking? [04:27] ? [04:27] you could use it to type [04:27] also, not sure why sleep deprivation causes pains, but it does :P [04:28] sammmmmmmm: that would drive me insane [04:28] would you ever augment yourself? [04:28] how do you mean? [04:28] HazRPG: stephen hawking doesn't mind doing it [04:28] throw myself into a computer? [04:28] HazRPG: nooooo [04:28] HazRPG: Deus Ex [04:28] never played that [04:29] heard of it... though [04:29] Mechanical body parts [04:29] Cyborgs [04:29] ah [04:29] hmm [04:29] maybe [04:29] Would you give up an arm for a mechanical one? [04:29] Or an eye? [04:29] would be cool to be indestructible in places :P [04:29] maybe not an eye [04:29] but other body parts yes [04:29] HazRPG: people have done it [04:30] would love not needing to go to the toilet for example :P [04:30] HazRPG: how would that work? [04:30] HazRPG: you NEED the toilet, man [04:30] e.g. all goes into a box that I can just throw into a machine and put in a different box ^_^ [04:30] WTF? [04:30] lol exactly [04:31] would you augment your penis? [04:31] e.g. all toilet waste goes into some sort of box... which you can just remove, and place into a toilet like thing to clean it out [04:31] [Jono Bacon] Recording a Screencast In Ubuntu Tutorial - http://www.jonobacon.org/2011/09/07/recording-a-screencast-in-ubuntu-tutorial/ [04:31] sammmmmmmm: hell no! [04:31] sammmmmmmm: I want to be able to feel something good ;D [04:32] I'd augment my chest and belly [04:32] With super tough metal compounds [04:32] And then my limbs [04:33] My eyes if I could safely [04:33] Super eyesight would be awesome [04:33] I'd only augment one eye, if it meant I could do some awesome calculations with it to predict stuff with (e.g. reference Eureka :P) [04:34] (or terminator) [04:34] HazRPG: Augmented reality [04:34] ;D [04:34] I'd use it to whois people in real time [04:34] technically we're getting there! [04:34] with glasses and such [04:34] I want to know about people without talking to them [04:35] haha yeah [04:35] would defo help with relationships too! [04:35] I want to know if a girl will put out just by looking at her [04:35] (schedule of her day...) [04:35] HazRPG: OMG you think like me [04:35] (she likes, x, y, z...) [04:36] (she just made a reference to *this*, here is a sample of what she's talking about) [04:36] HazRPG: imagine how useful augmented reality would be for soldiers and firefighters [04:36] or if its from a TV programme (here is a video of what she's talking about) [04:36] would be cool [04:36] HazRPG: But then you have the issue of whether she likes you for who you are, or for the machine you use [04:36] speaking of hating going to the toilet... brb [04:37] HazRPG: If she only likes you because you can understand her using complex electronics and computer code, it might de-value your relationship. [04:38] HazRPG: Although I struggle with empathy, so I'd use it more as a handicap tool rather than because I'm just lazy [04:39] HazRPG: I do not understand girls AT ALL [04:39] Probably why I haven't had a girlfriend for 5 years [04:40] heh, don't confuse the situation - at the end of the day, the computer won't act for you unless you tell it to [04:40] it'll only present to you what your actually thinking [04:40] or requesting of it [04:40] and at the end of the day, your brain would still have to process if you want to follow up with any of the stuff it presents to you [04:40] HazRPG: could do more [04:41] e.g. "hmm I wonder what type of flower she likes" and then it tells you, and you don't go and buy it [04:41] so at the end of the day, she'd still like you for you... cos its your choices [04:41] the fact that your memory and ability to find things easier would be irrelevant [04:42] Could augmented reality tell me if girls like me or not? [04:42] besides, who to say she wouldn't do the same thing back to you - if she had it too [04:42] sammmmmmmm: it could try to read body languages, and maybe base it on past events, etc [04:42] but doubt it would be fully accurate [04:42] HazRPG: That would be nice, I suck at body language [04:43] HazRPG: But it'd probably help I bet [04:43] indeed [04:43] Could it tell if a girl is horny for me? [04:44] "body language detects, she doesn't think your trying too hard... computer pull me up some info that might be relevant to her... computer: well she likes this, try that... etc" [04:44] sammmmmmmm: that ones easy yes [04:44] OMG [04:44] That would be awesome [04:44] I want this tech NAOW [04:44] lol [04:45] I need help with friendships and relationships so badly [04:45] I'm not really a people person :( [04:45] I have like 5 friends [04:45] cos being horny has some side-effects that are visible via body language, change in temp., way of talking, breathing... smells (hormones, etc) [04:45] HazRPG: yep, was thinking that [04:45] 5 good friends, is better than non dude [04:46] HazRPG: sure, but most people have like 50 [04:46] or more [04:46] and girlfriends [04:46] that's only because people suck at categorising stuff [04:46] HazRPG: ? [04:47] people can have many accountancies - people you don't see often, speak to often, or just talk to if they're around - but most will call these friends [04:47] not everyone that's a "friend" is a good enough friend to confide private things to [04:47] but its not the same thing [04:47] MartijnVdS: exactly :) [04:47] acquaintances*** [04:48] hmmmm [04:48] epic autoword correct there [04:48] I still think I have less friends than most people [04:48] HazRPG: Pidgin? [04:48] sammmmmmmm: So? It's not a race :) [04:48] sammmmmmmm: yeah lol [04:48] <3 Pidgin autocorrect and lazy typing [04:48] sammmmmmmm: my spelling is bad [04:48] HazRPG: Hahaha mine is good, but I'm tired and CBA [04:49] I have maybe 3 true friends... rest to me are either partial-friends or acquaintances [04:49] HazRPG: But you're at home almost all the time [04:49] or people I get along with for use of a better word :) [04:49] HazRPG: You live on the internet [04:50] people always get offended when I call them an acquaintance [04:50] haha why? [04:50] it's a neutral word, is it not? [04:50] they assume it means something bad, when really its just someone you've met or someone you get along with (more so on the whole someone you've met... but still, it depends on context) [04:50] "But I consider you a friend" etc. [04:51] But someone can be both a friend and an acquintance [04:51] sammmmmmmm: home most of the time cos its where I spend my working hours and personal time yes... but I still go out, and still see people :P [04:51] people shouldn't comment on things they barely understand [04:52] sammmmmmmm: Welcome to the real world, where everyone has an opinion on everything :) [04:52] friend to me is a sacred word - it means trust, etc [04:52] sammmmmmmm: just ignore the non-experts :) [04:52] real world sucks [04:52] so hate a good handful of friends, and very best friends, but many acquaintances [04:52] sammmmmmmm: Sorry, we don't have anything better on offer today ;) [04:53] sometimes I can say stupid things and my friends assume its true because im thought of as the smart one LOLOL [04:53] bah! [04:53] have* not hate [04:53] HazRPG: http://www.learn2type.com/ :P [04:53] MartijnVdS: just that time of morning ^_^ [04:53] HazRPG: Autocorrect doesn't do grammar so well [04:53] HazRPG: time for your first (Egyptian) coffee? :) [04:54] Just spelling [04:54] HazRPG: Can we be friends on Facebook? [04:54] MartijnVdS: no such thing as Egyptian coffee really lol, they're local is technically turkish coffee :P [04:54] their*? [04:54] HazRPG: not Ethiopian? [04:55] ^_^ [04:55] sammmmmmmm: if ya want [04:55] their*? [04:55] their* yes [04:55] sorry [04:55] bah [04:55] HazRPG: I cannot find you [04:55] MartijnVdS: also, bad time for coffee, I need to be awake and sane at 2pm [04:56] Although I haven't tried very hard [04:56] HazRPG: time for sleep then :) [04:56] sammmmmmmm: fail :P [04:56] facebook.com/hazrpg [04:56] it's past my bedtime [04:56] HazRPG: Dude, I could have found you if I had any effort to [04:56] HazRPG: mine is facebook.com/facrbook [04:57] probably :P [04:57] stupid facebook took the one I wanted [04:57] so I went with the most common typo [04:58] lol [04:58] you wanted facebook.com/facebook ? [04:58] yes [04:58] XD lol why? You can't change that url at all [04:59] What do you mean? [04:59] I could have made it whatever I wanted [05:00] you can only set it once, right? [05:00] I might make my forename on FB "Sam" and my surname "uel" [05:00] once, I think so [05:00] sammmmmmmm: until FB asks you for photo id [05:01] mart I can't tab-complete you :( [05:01] WTF why would FB do that? [05:01] sammmmmmmm: sometimes they do, if the suspect you're <13 years old, or someone reports you as a spammer too foten [05:01] If they did that, im quitting for good [05:01] often* [05:01] Wow that's lame [05:01] it's a good way to prevent spam, imho [05:02] I'm going to make Pidgin replace every instance of "gay" with "lame" so I don't have to keep forcing myself to be polite [05:02] captchas work better [05:03] FB sometimes gives me captchas when I spam my friend's profile too often [05:08] HazRPG: Did we move our convo into private on purpose? [05:08] sammmmmmmm: to autocomplete MartijnVdS in pidgin do "martij" [05:08] and then tab [05:09] I use that a lot ^_^ [05:09] btw, martijn is pronounced "martin" iirc :) [05:09] sammmmmmmm: nope ^_^ [05:09] sammmmmmmm: you msg me first ^_^ [05:09] HazRPG: too many letters to auto-complete [05:09] HazRPG: I use 3 then tab [05:09] 7 is too many [05:10] Why not just type the whole thing? [05:10] or not bother [05:12] urgh, seems facebook changed their privacy crap again T____T [05:12] HazRPG: I noticed that too [05:12] * HazRPG goes through all the crap again to see what's different and what I don't want [05:12] HazRPG: same [05:13] HazRPG: I have 99% of the stuff set to "only me" [05:13] heh [05:13] I have groups for that :P [05:13] I allow my best friends to see all things [05:13] People keep complaining they can't post on my wall [05:13] HazRPG: I don't trust the security of my friends' accounts [05:13] if I put someone into my "restricted" group, they seem very very limited stuff ^_^ [05:13] And don't trust Facebook with my info [05:13] again its all trust... I put people in places that I can trust them with ^_^ [05:14] HazRPG: you trust too much [05:14] HazRPG: FB is evil [05:14] sammmmmmmm: I've noticed you can now review posts to walls... [05:14] My friends are stupid [05:14] HazRPG: How does that work? [05:14] set it so that you have to review any posts to your walls it seems [05:15] But that'd require I have my wall visible [05:15] that way, you see the message, but you don't have to physically allow it on your wall ^_^ [05:15] my wall has too much personal info [05:15] well yeah... but you can restrict it down further if needs be [05:15] you can set it so that its not visible to people, but allow them to post on it [05:16] HazRPG: that's cool [05:16] or that's my understanding of it [05:16] HazRPG: But still, I could just not bother with it at all [05:16] true [05:16] I'm not exactly missing much [05:16] If someone wants info from me, they could just IM me and ask [05:16] I've noticed that being unsocial on facebook however... makes real life social life suffer (been there!) [05:17] That's the way I like it [05:17] HazRPG: WTFFFFFF? [05:17] so I find it easier to just limit crap on my facebook account (e.g. I don't put my number on there, and that stuff) [05:17] HazRPG: There was a time before FB! [05:17] but I allow people to post me stuff [05:17] however I don't allow facebook to tell me people post stupid apps [05:17] HazRPG: what do you mean exactly by "unsocial"? [05:18] sammmmmmmm: try telling that to the world (sadly) :( [05:18] I want an open source and openly run FB [05:18] i.e. people not being able to post on your wall... and not replying to people often/fast [05:18] FB is too big to be trusted by a for-profit business [05:18] HazRPG: WTFFFF [05:18] they forget I use pidgin for IM... so half the time I'm not actually on the darn website [05:19] HazRPG: why would that ruin my social life? [05:19] HazRPG: yeah same [05:19] I don't know, it ruined mine at one point [05:19] people started hating me for it o.O [05:19] (retards) [05:19] Im logged on FBchat 24/7 but at my PC more like 8/7 [05:19] exactly [05:19] same [05:20] HazRPG: Sorry about that, sounds like they mistreated you [05:20] indeed [05:20] obviously not my close friends - they're close for a reason ^_^ [05:20] HazRPG: I get people asking me every single week "why don't you have a wall" [05:20] So annoying [05:20] there are open-source facebook equivalents - just hard to get people to adopt them [05:21] HazRPG: Damn vicious circles! [05:21] sammmmmmmm: my groups seem to do all their organising on facebook - so I miss out on a lot :( [05:21] i.e. "why were you at x, we sent you an invite on facebook" [05:21] HazRPG: why? [05:22] LOL [05:22] I get so many spam events [05:22] SO annoying [05:22] I don't look at most of them now [05:22] sammmmmmmm: cos apparently everyone uses facebook - they live on facebook - breathe on facebook - apparently without facebook they would not have internal organs [05:22] HazRPG: gayyyyyyyyy [05:22] oops I mean lameeeeee [05:22] sammmmmmmm: so do I... and worst thing is you can't control the events either! [05:23] HazRPG: How do you propose we should be able to control them? [05:23] i.e. "don't allow people, except this list to send me events" [05:23] HazRPG: hmm that could cut down my spam lots [05:23] I want to prevent some people from sending me event invites [05:23] if you could do that, FANTASTIC, would be a winner, I'd set facebook events to hook straight into my phone to grab straight to my calendar (I have an android phone) [05:23] I think some of my friends are working for nightclubs [05:24] same [05:24] LOL [05:24] cos I keep getting "come to this club, and has funs, we haz cheap booze lulz, why not come, lulz, will be a blast, lulz" [05:24] There are so many things wrong with Facebook [05:24] HazRPG: OMG same [05:25] idc about those events AT ALL [05:25] facebook is the bane of the world :P [05:25] It's spam and advertising [05:25] I want a ban on advertising via facebook events [05:25] sammmmmmmm: agreed, it's the reason I have ad blockers, I don't need more things clogging my internets damnit [05:25] HazRPG: I haz adblocker too :) [05:26] in fact, same adblocker, I've actually blocked the facebook chat bar as a result [05:26] HazRPG: I want facebook even adblocker [05:26] cos I don't need to see the same message twice! [05:26] HazRPG: ahahaha [05:26] hahahaha [05:26] what browser you on, and which adblocker do you use? [05:26] HazRPG: sometimes pidgin doesn't get the message, so I have to go on the website :( [05:26] My wi-fi is so flaky [05:27] ah [05:27] HazRPG: do you know how to get messages in pidgin that have already been sent to me? [05:27] HazRPG: firefox adblock [05:27] you do realise even if you block the chat bar, the messages now show up in your messages section - cos chat and messages are one and the same thing now (stupid thing) [05:27] (facebook is the stupid thing btw, wasn't referring to you - I just hate facebook) [05:27] HazRPG: I want Pidgin to retrieve messages sent to me when im not connected, how do I do that? [05:28] HazRPG: yeah, noticed that [05:28] sammmmmmmm: don't think you can do that currently [05:28] HazRPG: Once I can do that, I'll never need the website again [05:28] heh [05:28] Bad wi-fi means I need it sometimes :( [05:28] The website chat is too unintuitive [05:28] hard to use [05:29] Pidgin makes it super easy [05:29] But it's buggy [05:29] thing that annoys me is that facebook uses xmpp - but doesn't follow any of its usual protocol measures [05:29] HazRPG: well that's dumb [05:30] pidgin isn't the buggy one - its just following the xmpp protocol, facebook is the buggy one [05:30] HazRPG: never used XMPP myself [05:30] technically you are :P [05:30] XMPP is just the server technologies [05:30] HazRPG: I know it's technically FB's fault [05:30] Jabber is the actual service, or facebook, or gtalk [05:30] HazRPG: I know, I meant before FB [05:30] :P [05:30] HazRPG: Sorry, haven't been explaining myself well [05:31] HazRPG: somehow I've managed to talk to you for 2 hours now without getting bored [05:31] I find it amusing that people show up in pidgin as "-3026830268236@chat.facebook.com" cos its that retarded [05:31] I could probably keep going, but it's WAY past my bedtime [05:31] if it was a normal xmpp, and it was federated properly, technically you'd only need a google account to add your facebook contacts [05:31] HazRPG: what generates that number? [05:32] as far as I know, it's a static number (i.e. hover over a contact on pidgin and you'll see that info - or right-click the their pic at the top right and click get info) [05:32] and it doesn't change [05:33] I have a feeling its generated when you create a facebook account [05:33] HazRPG: I think that too [05:33] Like a userID [05:33] We each have our number [05:33] when you make your url, then you can login to fbchat with pidgin as you know... so technically you should just be "username@chat.facebook.com" but that doesn't work for some stupid reason [05:34] i.e. in my gtalk account, I can't add myself (I was testing to see if it would work) [05:34] I've even tried adding people in based on the random stringed number - with no luck [05:34] dumb [05:34] guessing its cos its not federated xmpp [05:34] lame [05:34] federated, just means that other servers can talk to other servers [05:35] HazRPG: that would be cool [05:35] like how I can have an e-mail with @somethingdaft.com and still be able to email you at @someotherwebsite.com [05:35] gtalk is federated, along with jabber, and many others [05:35] HazRPG: nice examples [05:35] you can technically make a federated server at home if you wanted to [05:36] HazRPG: isn't domain registration expensive, though? [05:36] (federated xmpp I mean) [05:36] sammmmmmmm: domain is cheap [05:36] £30 a year? [05:36] in the UK, we can get a domain for ~£3 a year for a .co.uk [05:36] nicee [05:36] sammmmmmmm: if it was that expensive, I'd be broke o.O [05:36] dude, stop talking, let me sleep [05:37] sammmmmmmm: I've got like 5 domains! [05:37] ok? [05:37] lol alright :P [05:37] night xx [05:37] nite [05:37] \o [05:44] Heh, I'm going to see what happens when I put my name in arabic as an alt in fb ^_^ [05:46] hah epic ^_^ [05:46] morning all [05:47] AlanBell: morning squire :) [05:48] hmm, ubuntu question: how do I get the UUID for a given partition? [05:53] /dev/disk/by-uuid [05:53] then figure out which is which [05:54] or sudo blkid /dev/sda1 [06:05] !info pencil [06:05] pencil (source: pencil): animation/drawing software. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.4.4b-0ubuntu4 (natty), package size 478 kB, installed size 1196 kB [06:27] Morning [06:34] howdy [06:47] * daubers should go catch a bus to catch a train to go to London :( [06:47] * daubers dislikes London [06:49] However, my eeepc now works nicely :) [06:55] hello all [07:14] AlanBell: Ah, I'll give that a go, thanks :) [07:20] AlanBell: Brilliant, that works :) [07:20] AlanBell: Does this look sane to you for fstab: UUID=1C7432C87432A504 "/media/MP3's" defaults,nls=utf8,umask=007,gid=46 0 0 [07:21] where's the filesystem type? [07:21] ntfs [07:21] ah good point [07:21] not on that line.. [07:21] also.. gid 46? === mar_33 is now known as kkoo [07:21] that's plugdev.. === kkoo is now known as mar_33 [07:22] you shouldn't need to put stuff in that group [07:22] its what /media/storage and /media/win7 had when I installed ubuntu === mar_33 is now known as kkoo [07:22] sure but that's because you mounted them by clicking in the gui, I guess [07:23] yeah [07:24] in fact... looking at this fstab, its very messy o.O [07:24] MartijnVdS: Look at that o.O: http://pastebin.com/kjQD23CH [07:25] Commented out by Dropbox -- WUT [07:25] why would you run dropbox as root?! [07:25] * MartijnVdS adds this to the list of reasons to not run dropbox [07:27] I never did run dropbox as root, well aside from install [07:27] why did it comment out the /home mount then? [07:27] or _how_ [07:27] *shrug*? [07:28] it seems to have added "user_xattr" to /home [07:28] user_xattr is nice to have [07:28] it commented out the old /home, and replaced it with a similar thing but with "user_xattr" on it [07:28] so what is user_xattr out of interest ? [07:29] Morning [07:29] DJones: morning :) [07:30] MartijnVdS: does fstab have anything against tabs btw? [07:31] HazRPG: not that I know [07:32] what's a better alternative to "defaults,nls=utf8,umask=007,gid=46" for my other drives? [07:33] mkfs.ext4 :) [07:34] heh, non of my drives are ext4, they're ext3 :P [07:34] e.g. windows has to be ntfs [07:34] and as does /media/storage, because that's something I store files for both O/S [07:35] (despite the fact that I haven't used windows in a really long time, its there if I need it for whatever reason) [07:41] would it be a bad idea to take out "umask=007,gid=46" from this ntfs fstab? [07:41] cos it seems nls=utf8 is fine, and defaults is sorta needed ... but what about umask=007,gui=46 [07:42] am I right in thinking that's what gives it "owner: root" and group "devplug"? [07:43] plugdev, but yes, I think so [07:43] also, why put it in fstab? do you need it globally? can't you just open it in nautilus and be done? [07:44] HazRPG: I have this for my SMB shares at home: [07:44] HazRPG: //diskstation/video /mnt/video cifs uid=1000,credentials=/etc/cifs_credentials 0 0 [07:44] (uid 1000 == me) [07:44] 1000 usually always == person who installed it doesn't it :P? [07:45] usually [07:46] well storage for example is where I normally put downloads straight to [07:46] and also use as one of my backup locations [07:47] which runs every so often... so it needs to always be mounted [07:48] and /media/MP3's (only has the 's cos its legacy from when I had it on windows - and wasn't that good with linux at the time) is obviously where I store my music... however I don't use mp3's much these days (been slowly converting to flac) but banshee always cries if that isn't mounted [07:48] and since banshee is the first thing I open when I head to my computer... [07:49] Is banshee stable for you? [07:49] Because mine crashes ALL the time [07:50] especially on oneiric [07:50] banshee works like a treat ever since you told me about it ^_^ [07:50] only issues I have, is if I have too many sound based apps open at once for whatever reason... and then sound stream gets messed up - but I think that's more pulse's problem that banshee [07:51] also, I use to have the messed up sound issue more when I used rhythmbox, so if anything banshee has made my system a little more reliable [07:53] hmm, it won't hurt to take umask=007,gid=46 off will it? [07:53] since its not / /home swap etc which are *needed* for the system [07:53] if anything I can add those back if needed... right? [07:55] Morning all [07:59] morning [08:00] aloha [08:01] MooDoo: did she have the baby ??? [08:05] czajkowski: if i'm here then no :( [08:05] MooDoo: bah talk about SLOW labour [08:05] poor wifey [08:05] How much overdue is she now [08:05] 7 days [08:05] she's at the midwife this afternoon [08:07] Good morning peeps [08:07] i think she's having you on, she's not actuallly pregnant [08:07] christel: lol just gained a huge belly over the last 9 months ;) [08:07] hehe [08:08] MooDoo: McDonalds & KFC for breakfast, dinner & tea every day for 9 months? [08:08] DJones: yeah [08:08] What about your wife though :) [08:08] shush [08:10] Neighbours daughter is due home from hospital with her new born today, the neighbour is supposed to be doing my wifes hair tonight, I can see that being cancelled [08:11] :) [08:12] morning all [08:13] DJones: thanks for that :p [08:13] At least she'll be ok for child minders, in 2 houses in our close, there's now 4 generations of the same family, great grandparents over the road, next door but 1 to them, grandparents, daughter and her new born baby, ages, 60 ish, 40 ish, 21 and new born :) [08:14] MooDoo: It'll be you soon enough, no doubt waiting till the weekend so you can celebrate in style [08:14] you know, it doesn't make sense that some UUID's seem to be really long and hyphenated, and others don't :S [08:15] DJones: i hope not, it's my other sons 3rd birthday on sat :) [08:15] hehe [08:16] * czajkowski tickles christel [08:16] I hope they don't end up with the same birthday, a couple of days apart would be good to avoid taking something away from one or the others celebrations [08:16] rawr [08:16] that's what we're thinking [08:16] * christel hugs czajkowski [08:17] MooDoo: Wifes cousin shares the same birthday with her sisters daughter, that causes a few problems [08:17] MooDoo: or older son nose will be out of joint [08:17] my mum and i have the same birthday [08:17] well, not quite the same, she's obviously a few years older than me [08:18] christel: she gave herself a good present that year :) [08:18] me an my wife share the same birthday, she's 20 mins older [08:18] MooDoo: My sister is 2 hours older than her bf, we tease them about it ;) [08:18] Wife & her mum have birthdays close, next year we get a joint 60th/30th birthday party [08:18] MooDoo: ("So you like older women?" "And you like young boys?") [08:19] hehe [08:19] Good morning, people! :D [08:19] bigcalm: i dunno, i think she might say it was the worst birthday she'd ever had [08:19] nah, i jest.. apparently it was "quick and easy" [08:20] MooDoo: I'm sure you'll be hearing the pitter-patter of small feet soon enough :) [08:20] i was 3 weeks late and a whooping 12lbs, tho apparently labour took 25mins from start to finish [08:20] christel: 12? blimey [08:21] Blimey indeed [08:21] i was 6lb's now i'm huge ;) [08:21] Though 25 minutes is FAST [08:22] hel yes, i don't want her to be that fast as we're 25 mins from the hospital :D [08:22] morning [08:22] howdy popey [08:22] morning popey [08:22] christel: woah, that is fast [08:22] morning popey \o [08:22] my son was 9 1/2lbs, the computer esstimated he was 7lbs the day before [08:23] i am glad it was wrong oro i might have refused [08:23] (to have him that is) [08:23] my first was 9 1/2 oz, new one is expected to be bigger :S [08:23] he looked like a seriously angry sumo wrestler when he was born [08:24] http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/182769_10150158436510937_668090936_8345427_1933335_n.jpg [08:26] I was 10lb 1oz :D [08:27] MooDoo: what did you feed her [08:27] christel: dear gods! I can only imagine....... [08:28] czajkowski: it's me i'm afraid, i'm quite big so my genes rubbed off [08:28] it went pretty fast, i think the worst bit was when the mouthpiece fell off the gas and air supply and i really struggled to put it back on [08:31] [Paul Mellors] Ubuntu Members - http://paulmellors.blogspot.com/2011/09/ubuntu-members.html [08:34] aw the documentary about how the pregnancy conditions affect the baby is gone from iplayer [08:35] was a good show, might have been in horizon or smth [08:53] MartijnVdS: hmm, seems changing fstab to just defaults,nls=utf8 has suddenly give the drives a chmod of 777 [08:54] EEK [08:54] ntfs defaults are stränge [08:54] MartijnVdS: and they now show up as being highlighted in the terminal [08:54] HazRPG: yes, world-writable tends to be bad [08:54] so it has a special colour [08:55] well yeah, I realise its bad... I mean I was like "woah, what!?" when I saw it [08:55] should I put in defaults,nls=utf8,umask=1000,gid=1000? [08:55] umask=022 then [08:55] or would setting it as me:me be bad? [08:55] uid=1000 you mean :) [08:56] sorry yes [08:56] umask=022? [09:02] morning all [09:02] morning [09:02] pip pip [09:03] hmm, changed it to: "defaults,nls=utf8,umask=022" seems to be working better (I umount'ed them and then did mount -a) [09:04] which is now looking a lot nicer === chrisccoulson_ is now known as chrisccoulson [09:04] MartijnVdS: Muchos grasias ^_^ [09:09] I tried to open the bookmark manager in chromium and it quit the browser. Yay [09:10] Cannot reproduce :( [09:12] bigcalm: :( [09:13] bigcalm: I recall something like that about a year or so ago, I thought I'd since been fixed :( [09:13] It'd* [09:13] although, likewise, was hard to reproduce [09:19] * HazRPG needs to think about what to write in a blog post [09:21] pick a wikileaks cable and write about it [09:23] do you remember deb a day? [09:23] revive that! [09:24] http://web.archive.org/web/20090627021509/http://debaday.debian.net/ [09:29] which reminds me of:- [09:29] apt-cache show $(grep -h 'Package: ' /var/lib/apt/lists/*_Packages | cut -d' ' -f2 | grep -v ^lib | shuf -n 1) [09:29] which will show you a random package from the repository :D [09:29] I have discovered a few new things to me from that [09:30] AlanBell: hmm... interesting... maybe [09:30] Laney: no I don't, shall have a read though the archives though :) [09:30] popey: and I just discovered xpad from that. Might actually use it [09:30] win [09:33] Laney: heh, interesting site... I wonder why they spotted... [09:40] MartijnVdS: hmm, heh, apparently I can't write to /media/music (decided to call it music instead) [09:41] popey: aliased that to apt-random :D [09:41] HazRPG: ls -ld /media/music :) [09:41] I used ll [09:41] but yeah: drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 32768 2011-09-07 09:46 /media/music [09:46] MartijnVdS: *ping* ^_^ [09:46] pong [09:46] uhr [09:46] mount | grep "/media/music" [09:47] MartijnVdS: nothing shows [09:47] so.. it's not mounted? [09:47] should be... I can see the folder of stuff (cos it won't let me write to it) [09:48] and I tab-completed that, so its definitely the right folder [09:48] HazRPG: Are you using nautilus to write to it or command line? [09:48] HazRPG: check /proc/mounts then [09:48] DJones: nautilus [09:48] HazRPG: ah, then it could be gvfs mucking about? [09:49] maybe? [09:49] does it help if I said I said, I umounted them and then "mount -a" [09:50] HazRPG: I seem to remember that once you change the folder permissions by command line, nautilus doesn't pick that up until it or the desktop environment is restarted, try creating a file in a terminal to see if it works from that [09:50] touch \o/ [09:50] touch idd! [09:50] nope... permission denied if I do it as me [09:50] HazRPG: so chown the mount point [09:51] and maybe fix the mount options to include a uid/group you're part of (if you choose group, set the umask to 0002 instead of 0022) [09:51] MartijnVdS: won't that be reset the next I reboot [09:51] (the chown I mean) [09:53] HazRPG: probably, I don't know [09:54] so does umask=0002,gid=1000 sound sane? [09:54] HazRPG: my /media/music folder has drwxrwxrwx 7 root root 4096 2010-08-21 14:32 music [09:55] DJones: guessing you just left it as "default" [09:55] "defaults" even [09:55] I connect to that via nfs from a number of machines & have no problems with creating files [09:55] DJones: yours an ntfs partition too? [09:55] No, ext3 [09:56] ah, see this partition is legacy for me, its from when I used windows... [09:56] (which I haven't actually booted in over 9 months) [09:57] I did change the permissions using gksudo nautilus rather than using terminal [09:57] ah [09:57] see that's just it though, the folder itself (before mounting that is) is actually owned by me [09:57] so /media/music/ = hazrpg:hazrpg before it gets mounted [09:58] I'm guessing mounting overrides that [09:58] (unless otherwise stated in the mount command/fstab) [09:58] half tempted to just put this back to "defaults,nls=utf8,umask=007,gid=46" [09:59] morning all [10:00] morning davmor2 sorry you haven't won the pool [10:01] MooDoo: Dammit did you not tell her I was splitting the winning with you? [10:02] MooDoo: still in labour or has she had it? [10:02] davmor2: lol we thought it was going to happen last night and it all fizzled out....still in labour...nothing appeared yet [10:03] good morning everyone. [10:03] morning brobostigon [10:03] morning davmor2 [10:13] MartijnVdS: think I've got my permissions sorted out ^_^ [10:13] MartijnVdS: much thanks ^_^ [10:13] davmor2: mornin dude [10:13] DJones: cheers for helping too [10:14] morning HazRPG [10:14] morning HazRPG :) [10:14] brobostigon: morning ^_^ [10:14] hmm, here's an interesting question for ya all [10:15] in nautilus, on the left-hand pane... can the drives not be sorted in some way? [10:15] i.e. forced in a specific order, so that they're always in the same locations [10:15] good question, no idea. [10:15] and then new drives always tacked on the end [10:16] there maybe some gconf keys to change it? [10:16] it always frustrates me that they seem to have a little dance about on the screen each time I boot up (I understand roughly /why/ they show up in different locations, I just wish you could force it to always show up the same based on its UUID or something) [10:16] brobostigon: I was thinking the same, already googling it ^_^ [10:17] :) [10:21] brobostigon: seems its been a requested feature (well listed as a bug...) but got canned, saying it was "fixed" ... but yet the guy reopened it and said that it still wasn't fixed, and no ones followed it through since 2009 [10:21] hmm, interesting. [10:21] apparently its organised by uuid, which is totally unintuitive to the user [10:22] it could be set my sort, by connection? [10:22] you can give drives a label [10:22] and use that [10:22] (LABEL=) [10:22] I can understand why the devs probably did it that way, but its lazy just to not make things easier for people actually using it [10:22] HazRPG: What would it sort by if you didn't use uuid's, but stuck with the old type /sda etc [10:23] MartijnVdS: My drives do have labels... i.e. "MP3's", "300GB", "Win7", "Storage", "Installs" [10:23] HazRPG: you can use those instead of UUIDs when mounting [10:23] HazRPG: check /dev/disk/by-label (I think?) [10:23] MartijnVdS: I swap hard drives around, that would assume I put the same drive in the same port each time iirc :P [10:24] here's the bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/256359 [10:24] Ubuntu bug 256359 in nautilus (Ubuntu) "the sidebar volumes are not sorted alphabetically" [Low,Triaged] [10:24] HazRPG: no, that's /dev/sda sdb etc [10:24] HazRPG: labels are "MP3s" etc. :) [10:24] MartijnVdS: I know ^_^ [10:24] HazRPG: so as long as you don't have multiple drives with the same label, you're fine [10:27] MartijnVdS: how would you set it to sort by label? gconf? [10:27] HazRPG: oh SORT by label.. what? [10:27] (what is "it"?) [10:27] (lulz) [10:28] oh nautilus sidebar [10:28] yeah ^_^ [10:28] I always thought it ordered by insertion time [10:28] MartijnVdS: oh? I.e. via fstab order? [10:28] no.. time you inserted the USB connector into the socket [10:29] what about regular drives :P? [10:29] no idea [10:30] seems this guy feels my pain: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7081955 [10:30] and its weird to see that root actually does alphabetically order them o.O [10:31] in fact, as root, it even displays them by their mount name - which is even better [10:33] heh, this one annoys me too: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=570922 [10:33] Debian bug 570922 in gvfs "gvfs: launching gparted causes duplicate entries for partitions in nautilus 'Places'" [Normal,Open] [10:33] clearly I'm just too OCD [10:41] ooooo gconf->app->nautilus->preferences->show_advanced_permissions [10:41] I likes :) [10:46] also, volumes_visible (desktop) = false == win \o/ [10:46] I should play with gconf more [10:48] * directhex moos [10:49] * popey cuddles directhex === bigcalm[revo] is now known as bigcalm [10:54] ah, I give up lol [10:54] fixed some of my gripes though ^_^ [10:57] * HazRPG gets ready to go into town to see an old friend who is currently visiting [11:22] interesting, a conservative mp, dissing the libdems. and saying they have too much power, for the amount of mp's they have. [11:45] they do. but they have disproportionately few MPs for the votes they have. [11:45] so it balances out [11:46] quite, yes, but it was funny, the way said mp said it. [11:47] back-bench tories are furious about the coalition [11:47] that was the impression, yes. [11:47] they deserved to win outright. it was their turn! [11:48] the coalition is a humiliation, and proof that hug-a-hoodie cameron is no good. if they had a true tory leader like thatcher, they would have won a landslide [11:48] etc etc etc [12:29] ##politics \o/ [12:30] Anyone here use XBMC and have a SQLite db I can use to write some stuff for ? [12:30] Will just wait till I get home later otherwise [12:30] ##politics-uk :) [12:44] oo [12:44] the show I was talking about earlier: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b013ywz4/Horizon_20112012_The_Nine_Months_That_Made_You/ [12:45] i'll have a watch of that [12:48] anyone on Oneiric that can confirm this? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin-nonfree/+bug/840826 [12:48] Ubuntu bug 840826 in flashplugin-nonfree (Ubuntu) "Firefox (flash) mute pulseaudio and do not appear in sound app list" [Undecided,Confirmed] [13:03] Any time I issue a shutdown, suspend or hibernate (via the GUI, not via halt), it appears to do a reboot instead. What might cause that? [13:03] Only happening on my workstation [13:04] sounds somewhat familiar [13:05] but I'm too sugarhigh to remember why [13:05] annoying [13:05] It's a fairly recent change as well [13:05] Around the time I added a 2nd nvidia graphics card [13:06] * bigcalm hugs Myrtti [13:06] I hate when this happens [13:07] it's a bit like putting my hand into non-newtonian liquid [13:07] Fun? [13:08] frustrating [13:08] both, but mostly frustrating [13:41] How might I go about debugging this reboot problem? [13:43] bigcalm, on O? [13:43] bigcalm: i have that too [13:43] 10.10 x64 [13:43] i have to use terminal now, sudo shutdown -p 0 iirc [13:43] oh good grief [13:44] was just on the brink of a nervous breakdown - couldn't find my banking keys [13:44] Myrtti: good way to save money ;) [13:44] gord: on 0? [13:44] oneiric? [13:44] Oh, no [13:44] 11.04 [13:44] no idea then [13:45] dogmatic69: losing money you mean - if I can't pay my bills in time [13:45] bigcalm: well its the same for 10.10 [13:45] dogmatic69: it's only recently started happening for me in 11.04 and only one one machine [13:45] ye, started on my box about 2 or 3 weeks ago [13:46] Aha [13:46] real annoying [13:46] So was an update to both versions [13:46] Hummz [13:47] shortly after that my logout button went completely.. could not use it even if i wanted to [13:47] check /var/log/kern.log or /var/log/kern.log.1 to see if something crashed [13:47] Laney: i reboot that pc every day [14:41] Nice specifications for a laptop http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/41967/msi-gt683dxr-gt780dxr-gaming-laptops , potentially 16Gb/1.5TB, i7, GTX570M, 17.3" screen [14:42] no word on weight [14:42] i'd want an alienware m11x as a gaming laptop, personally [14:42] they broke the scales [14:42] or the new razer [14:42] I've looked at both of them, they look nice [14:43] most people aren't worried about weight when they buy a 17" gaming laptop :) they're just going to bolt table-legs to the bottom of it anyway .. [14:43] shauno, i have very strict requirements [14:44] it'd take a lot for me to consider a laptop >2kg [14:46] i don't understand why people buy huge laptops as desktop replacements [14:46] My HP laptop is 17" screen, that weighs 3.1kgs, thats just bearable, although can get heavy sat on my lap [14:46] you are paying 3x as much for a rubbish screen and a rubbish keyboard [14:47] ali1234: i dont know why people buy laptops. [14:47] they suck :P [14:47] yes, they do [14:47] but sometimes you need it to be portable [14:48] I got a Dell 6510 instead of 6410, because I travel a lot, but I also usually tend to find a table to put my laptop on [14:49] carrying it isn't such a chore [14:49] but the ability of watching movies on hi-res weighed more [14:52] ali1234: I bought a desktop replacement whilst at uni, because it was easier to move than a desktop [14:53] Anyone got any idea why fdisk -l would list a ext3 drive as ntfs ? [14:53] and the weight just saves gym membership [14:53] ;) [14:53] Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System [14:53] /dev/sde1 1 30401 244196001 7 HPFS/NTFS [14:53] /dev/sde1 on /media/usb1 type ext3 (rw) [14:55] * hamitron has never tried formating a ntfs partition with ext3 [14:55] could that be it? [14:55] diplo, yes. [14:55] diplo, the partition type is a tag in the partition table. the file system you use need not be related [14:56] ah right cool thanks, did wonder if it was something like that [14:56] partition type 7 us HPFS/NTFS [14:57] 83 is Linux, which is commonly used for any linux FS [14:57] except lvm or swap [14:58] thanks directhex [14:58] does windows update the Id if you format a ext3 partition inside the admin thingie? [14:58] hamitron, pass. [14:59] I'm gonna ahve to try it [14:59] :/ [15:00] hamitron, do you want it to be ntfs or ext? [15:01] it is ext3 atm, gonna remove data, then format it to ntfs in windows [15:01] hamitron, format it to ntfs in ubuntu ;) [15:02] but I wanna check what windows does [15:02] :) [15:02] I also don't run ubuntu on this machine [15:03] Anyone had an issue with ustream not detecting line input ? I can capture line in through audacity, without needing to select anything. Also the sound mixer shows the vu meter doing stuff in time with input audio. Just seems ustream isn't working for me. [20:19] justinBUJITSUBRO you could just backup and reload if you've done something bad to break things [20:20] or try googling your problem, because I really don't know :P [20:21] popey: so yea it looks really good, just missing features basically :D [20:21] ok thank you ill try [20:21] O_o [20:22] popey: and it should be perfectly capable of scaling to thousands of players across multiple physical servers [20:22] while using hardly any resources [20:22] tonytiger: is that you I see [20:23] welcome :p [20:23] czajkowski: only until I next ping out ;) [20:24] hehe [20:27] hey, just installed an ubuntu 10.10 vps and for every package i try apt-get install for it just says package not found [20:27] MonsterKiller: your on a VPS, common practice of VPS hosts is to mess with sources.list to save bandwith [20:28] typical practice of cheap VPS hosts :) [20:28] xD [20:28] pastebin /etc/apt/sources.list [20:29] http://paste.monsterprojects.org/mpbwbrhehwhewhr [20:31] so yea, obviously been messed with :P [20:31] your missing multiverse entirely [20:32] MonsterKiller: replace it with http://pastebin.com/GAwGtTYW [20:33] thanks :) [20:33] keep a backup of your old one in case I got it wrong [20:33] :P [20:43] when i reload the list i get http://paste.monsterprojects.org/mpbwbrhekjkezjs [20:44] mtr us.archive.ubuntu.com ? [20:45] it doesnt have mtr \o/ [20:46] ping google.com, ping: unknown host google.com [20:46] \o/ [20:47] nice internet you have there [20:47] haha [20:47] azelphur: ru available? [20:56] sorry i aint to bright [20:56] how did you end up on ubuntu? [20:57] i got into it 2 yrs ago from a tech at the unversity of belize [20:58] yea, so you installed it yourself right? [20:58] sicne then it has been my only os up to 2weeks ago when my wife wanted win so i tried to figure out virtual box and got it working for her [20:59] yes i bout this laptop 1.5 yr ago brand new and did a live disk w/ 8 somthing [21:00] and the upgrade to 10.04 lts [21:00] and it has worked ok for me so far [21:00] evening all [21:00] just strange hardwehre problems [21:01] it might be due to the os itergration suport for this spesific brand and model laptop [21:02] i reaallyy dont know wish i did [21:06] azelphur: can the program back in time help ? [21:06] never heard of it [21:07] oh ok what would be the best way of backing up my computer keping all the programs [21:07] and files i have [21:08] !backup | justinBUJITSUBRO [21:08] justinBUJITSUBRO: There are many ways to back your system up. [21:50] Sister is moving to a flat without a phoneline - fancies something along those lines. [21:54] andylockran: popey has one [21:56] Azelphur: you can get a mifi? [21:56] andylockran: ^ [21:56] I have a netgear WNDR3700 running OpenWRT with a 3G dongle [21:56] er, yes, him [21:56] hehe [21:56] we all look alike us ircers, amirite. [21:59] popey: thanks [21:59] popey: which network you on? [22:01] http://zrmt.com/2011/09/07/converting-documents/ - if someone has familiarity with beautifulsoup / python / xml I could really do with a hand [22:03] andylockran: its a 3 dongle [22:04] popey: thanks [22:31] [Andy Loughran] Converting Documents - http://zrmt.com/2011/09/07/converting-documents/ [22:32] andylockran: was it you the other day with the mangled xml in utf16 or something? [22:32] yup :) [22:33] well this is the advice i always give to anyone trying to parse xml: don't [22:33] use an xml parser [22:33] ali1234: I thought I was dealing with an xml doc.. turned out to be a OOXML doc [22:33] ali1234: such as? [22:33] python has two in the standard library [22:33] lxml? [22:34] http://docs.python.org/library/markup.html [22:34] xml tools seem really complicated when you look at the xml and think you can parse it [22:34] this is a really really big mistake [22:34] they are complicated for a reason [22:35] and if you try to parse yourself you'll just go mad or write yet complex another xml parser [22:35] so now i said that i'll read your post [22:36] evening folks [22:36] OOXML is the ebil mixrosoft one right? [22:37] for all its flaws i have never heard anything about them not being valid xml [22:37] ali1234: your input would be appreciated. [22:38] i have wrangled OOXML before [22:38] pretty much doing what you are doing [22:38] you know theres a python lib specially for ripping data from OOXML spreadsheets? [22:38] if that's all you need that would be perfect [22:38] it can't write docs, only read them [22:38] 1 sec [22:39] if you need to create OOXML docs then your best bet is ironpython and the office CLR bindings (which are horrid, but still better than any other way) [22:40] andylockran: check this out : http://pypi.python.org/pypi/ooxml [22:40] ali1234: it's a docx file I believe [22:40] yeah [22:40] same thing [22:40] and I want to convert that xml stanza to a spreadsheet [22:40] oh, so you want to rip from a text document? [22:40] well, csv to then import into excel. [22:40] into a spreadsheet? [22:40] yeah [22:41] ok then [22:41] well, that is even easier [22:41] you probably already figured out there's only really 1 interesting file inside the zip bundle [22:41] so take the h2, h3 tags, and then use them as the first two columns for as long as the p repeats itself.. [22:41] the data structure is on that blog [22:42] look in the python ooxml module at how it opens the xml files [22:42] it uses a real xml parser [22:42] just steal that code and adapt it :) [22:42] http://pypi.python.org/pypi/ooxml [22:43] ali1234: the ooxml mod only works with xslx [22:43] wrong [22:43] it only has a high level interface on xlsx [22:43] right, ok [22:43] but it uses the standard xml parser to open any docx format [22:43] all of which are nothing but zipped bundles of xml files [22:45] pretty much what you are going to do is copy and paste the spreadsheet.py file [22:45] and make it read docx instead of xlsx [22:45] which is going to be quite easy [22:54] h [22:55] azelphur: are you free: [22:55] ) [22:55] nope, I was captured a few days ago :( [22:55] dude ur hellarious [22:56] i found out that the problem w/ my mouse has somthing to do with the window maneger [22:56] does that make any sence to u? [22:56] cuz i am kida lost but [22:57] justinBUJITSUBRO yea I figured it would be, but still far too vague [22:57] justinBUJITSUBRO do you know if your using compiz or metacity? [22:57] using the cmd metacity --replace& has gotten me back my mouse functions but i lost on proformance [22:58] by performance do you mean graphical effects [22:58] because metacity is waaaaay faster than compiz [22:58] i ges so cuz the minimize all button says it wont work [22:59] b/c [22:59] i either dont have a mangeger or my maeger dont soport that function [22:59] so i guress its graphical [23:00] not hard where preformance [23:00] lets try something fun [23:00] install the ccsm package [23:00] ok [23:02] its done what now? [23:02] system > preferences > compizconfig settings manager [23:03] preferences, reset do defaults [23:04] aight did that [23:05] w8 [23:05] see if that solves your problem [23:05] andylockran: so do you have a docx or a html file? or both? [23:06] do defaults [23:06] ? [23:06] reset to defaults* [23:07] ok my bad yea i did that ill jus log out n log in agin [23:09] yeaaaaa [23:09] i hope thats alowd here [23:09] solved? [23:09] andylockran: is that html file just the xml ripped from the docx? [23:09] thank you very much [23:10] yes it is i would love to know what i did to screw it up [23:10] Azelphur: ill wash ur feet when u get married [23:10] thankyou [23:10] :D [23:11] something clearly was wrong in your compiz config [23:11] mos def [23:12] aight yall i gota get going to bu-jitsu class i m almost L8 thanks man [23:13] :) [23:16] * ali1234 wanders off to do something else [23:24] ali1234: I'm not sure. [23:25] I was given the htm from the girlfriend [23:25] not sure what generated it [23:25] just looked like ms stuff [23:25] so the html is the only thing you have? [23:25] yup [23:25] well it isn't docx [23:26] it is docx saved as html [23:26] which is different [23:26] no point trying to open it with a docx reader [23:26] ah, ok [23:40] evening all [23:41] nice meal? [23:41] oh yeah :) [23:41] :D [23:43] dutchie: I kinda like your college :) [23:44] AlanBell: having fun? [23:45] having lots of very very nice food [23:45] https://plus.google.com/109175303602657131317/posts/ZgjT3pCFEmb [23:47] the duck was superb [23:48] * AlanBell takes photo of the menu [23:56] ah, people are still awake [23:59] for small values of awake
