gnomieupdated and reloaded. no errors  :o00:18
gnomieunity2d00:18
gnomiegnome-control-center didnt bug out this time00:19
test34ubuntu erased one of my partition when I rebooted.. I had the encrypted swap and one of my drive switch from /dev/sda to /dev/sdb and it started to use a data partition as a swap partition even if the partition type was not swap...01:03
IdleOnezetec452: welcome. I say some support because well you may or may not get some in here :)01:03
zetec452That's cool. :)01:03
zetec452Suprised Ubuntu would erase a parition test3401:04
ikoniatest34: sorry, that's not possible, something different would have happened01:04
ikoniatest34: it was most likley a user error at the time of install01:04
wsbl-uhpd651So really - how solid is the alpha version of 11.10?  What bugs are still being worked out with it, if any?01:04
zetec452Generally a system will warn you of any partion changes. Perhaps it could be a bug whereby it didn't recognise the partition.01:04
castlefoxhi01:04
castlefox I am planning on buying a new computer soon and I want to run a VM.  I plan on using Virtual box to play with VMs.   Would a computer with more more CPUs or should I just look for one fastest interms of mhz ?01:05
ikoniawsbl-uhpd651: it all depends on your needs, if you want stable, wait for release.01:05
wsbl-uhpd651ikonia: That's kind of what I thought.  True dat :)01:05
BrandonBoltontest34: 11.10 erased one of my partitions also.01:05
ikoniacastlefox: it really doesn't matter01:05
ikoniasorry, I don't buy that,01:05
test34ikonia, the encrypted swap fstab uses the partition name (ie /dev/sda4) and not the UUID01:05
ikoniatest34: so ?01:05
zetec452castlefox: I'd go for memory over CPU.01:06
castlefoxikonia: ohhh mmk01:06
test34ikonia, so my encrypted swap used to be /dev/sdb4... but when I rebooted /dev/sdb4 was now my backup partition... and got erased01:06
castlefoxzetec452:  RAM or are you taking about the cash memory on the cpu ?01:06
ikoniatest34: "and got erased", no sorry01:06
zetec452castlefox: RAM, generally whenever I'm running VM's RAM and HDD are the bottleneck not CPU01:07
test34ikonia, try to use a data partition as your swap... it will get erased01:07
ikoniatest34: you're not meant to do that01:07
BrandonBoltoncastlefox: My desktop has 8 gbs of RAM and a Pentium Dual Core processor. It runs great with virtual machines. You don't need much, but, the more RAM the better.01:07
castlefoxzetec452: oh ok.  Thanks for the tip !01:07
test34ikonia, I didnt mean to do that, it did it by itself01:07
ikoniatest34: of course it will get erased or "formatteded" as swap, you've told it to use that partition as swap01:07
ikoniatest34: no, I don't believe that,01:07

BrandonBoltonHello all, are the rumors true that in 11.10 the Classic theme will be removed?01:08
test34ikonia, I forgot the name of the swap encrytiom fstab file.... what is it again01:08
test34encryption01:09
zetec452BrandonBolton: IIRC yes classic will be removed.01:09
yourmomBrandonBolton: i'll be getting lots of RAM in that case.  Thx01:09
ikoniawhat ?01:09
BrandonBoltonzetec452: That was one of my favourite parts of Ubuntu. I loved the layout. It worked so well on my netbook, too. And my desktop for that matter of fact. Will you be able to install it?01:10
test34ikonia, /etc/crypttab01:10
test34ikonia, that is the file that should be using UUID01:10
ikoniatest34: and ?01:10
BrandonBoltonyourmom: Just buy a cheap computer and buy compatible RAM on like NewEgg.com. That is the cheapest bet.01:11
zetec452BrandonBolton: Not sure I'm afraid.01:11
test34ikonia, if you dont know the use of UUID I'm talking to the wrong person01:11
ikoniatest34: I fully understand them01:11
BrandonBoltonzetec452: Well when the time comes I will figure it out. :)01:11
test34ikonia, so you understand why I lost data then01:12
ikoniatest34: not at all, no01:12
ikoniatest34: your telling me that your install changed randomly decided to use a non-swap partition as a swap partition, and you've lost data, that doesn't sit as possible to me01:12
test34it mounted the wrong partition as my swap because one of my drived switched from /dev/sda to /dev/sdb01:12
ikoniasorry, I don't believe that as it can't mount swap01:13
test34I mean swapon01:13
ikoniaand if you try to swapon a non-swap partition, it will refuse01:13
ikoniaso it must have been formated as a swap partition during the install01:13
test34well there must be a bug with encrypted partitions01:13
ikoniaor user error01:13
test34it was not set as a swap partition even after I lost my data01:14
ikoniathen you can't have lost your data01:14
ikoniaor something else will have caused the problem01:14
ikonia(that's just my opinion)01:14
test34while it was an ext2 partition, I wasnt able to mount it to a directory (busy error)... even though it wasnt showing in "df" as mounted01:15
ikoniait was probably already mounted, hence "busy"01:16
ikoniaor you where in the directory you where trying to mount it to01:16
test34this is not a dev version of ubuntu but #ubuntu are not answering01:16
ikoniawhat !01:16
zetec452It would be interesting if you could replicate this01:16
ikoniaso you're wasting my time01:16
test34it was not mounted01:16
yourmombrandonbolton: ya I've been waiting to see if the new  stuff from AMD this month will be any good.01:16
zetec452even on a vm.01:16
ikoniazetec452: you saw IdleOne tell you it was #ubuntu+1 for 11.1001:17
zetec452ya?01:17
ikoniaand you where in #ubuntu, so you've just taken this channel offtopic by talking about not 11.1001:17
test34I'm pretty sure this bug still exist in #ubuntu.dev if you are not aware of it01:18
ikoniastop making things up01:18
zetec452Not sure I follow. I was in #ubuntu and started 11.10 talk and was directed here. What's the problem?01:18
ikoniazetec452: you've just said this is not the development version of ubuntu eg: not 11.1001:19
test34does Ubuntu beta use UUID for /etc/crypttab01:19
zetec452where did I say that?01:19
ikoniazetec452: sorry, I meant that for test3401:19
ikoniazetec452: my apologies01:20
zetec452There's me thinking I'd had too much to drink. :p01:20
ikoniatest34: are you using 11.10 or 11.04 ?01:20
test34UUID is the only way to guarantee you recognize the same drive or partition no matter what. For example, if you introduce to your system another hard drive, this might upset quite a few things, starting with the way your system boots up (or stops booting up upon the new drive introduction). Using UUID helps remedy most of such things.01:20
ikoniazetec452: big apologies,01:20
zetec452NP. :)01:20
ikoniatest34: what version of ubuntu are you using,01:20
test34please look into this issue01:20
ikoniatest34: respond, what version of ubuntu are you using ?01:21
test34ikonia, I won't respond until you respond to this: does version 11.10 use UUID for /etc/crypttab ?01:21
zetec452I must admit the little tweaks they've made to unity in 11.10 do make a nice difference.01:22
zetec452Still not a huge fan of 11.10 on a 15" laptop screen.01:22
ikoniatest34: you now can't respond as you're muted in the channel, send me a pm when you want to start telling the truth01:22
Pilif12pHow do I get GNOME 2 on 11.10?01:34
rwwGNOME 2 specifically, or is GNOME 3 that looks like GNOME Panel okay?01:34

atari2600acan you re-arrange workspaces yet?05:34
atari2600aor should I install xubuntu next re-formatting of /05:34
atari2600ait has to be quite literally the only thing holding me back from using unity05:34
atari2600awell, that & sudo update-manager -d05:35
atari2600athis is kinda important for me05:55
atari2600ait determines whether I ruin my 35-day uptime to install a beta05:56
atari2600afine I'll harass the main channel05:58
bazhangatari2600a, for 11.10?05:58
atari2600abazhang, yeah06:03
bazhangTo rearrange items in Unity’s Launcher, you first need to click and hold on the icon you want to move, then drag it out to the right first to free it from the Launcher.06:05
bazhangNow you can move it up or down and change its position by dropping it where you want it and letting go of the mouse button.06:05
bazhangatari2600a, if that's ^^ not working, then you should file a bug, unless the process has changed drastically since 11.0406:05
atari2600aI want the launcher by default to have 4 horizontal workspaces06:08
atari2600aboth GNOME & Unity are going way to far, depricating important stuff like this with the intention of reimplementation06:08
atari2600amaybe06:08
atari2600aif enough people complain for long enough06:08
atari2600aI bet since it's on GNOME 3 I won't have access to screensavers either06:09
atari2600amany people still use CRTs & OLEDs have a half-life, we still need screensavers...06:10
Trewasatari2600a: I don't think there is a GUI configuration option to change number/shape of workspaces, but the gconf keys are still there06:10
bazhanghorizontal? at the bottom or top of the screen?06:10
nomegohey guys, what's the difference between the fglrx and fglrx-updates in oneiric ?06:11
atari2600aTrewas, IIRC you said that last time & changing the keys did nothing for me06:13
atari2600athat or I couldn't find them where they where / should be06:13
atari2600aI'd restart x to check right now but I have so much stuff going on, & possibly a teamviewer session to help out a girl with her dying decade-old computer06:14
Trewasatari2600a: /apps/compiz-1/general/screen0/options/hsize and vsize worked a few weeks ago06:20
atari2600athe unit for a workspace being 1?06:21
atari2600aI'll keep it in mind tonight if I go -d maybe06:21
Trewashow many horizontal and vertical workspaces there are06:22
TrewasI changed to kde since then, at least they don't have the problem of unity/gnome3 developers, "we KNOW how you must use your computer"06:23
Trewasatari2600a: and by the way, that is for unity 3d, I have no idea what windowmanager unity-2d uses06:28
almoxarife'suspend' disappears from the panel here, am I alone?06:30
rwwTrewas: modified Metacity, I believe06:31
nomegohmm is there anything special to be done to get video working with fglrx?06:32
atari2600aTrewas, that's not to say KDE devs don't have their own problems06:44
atari2600a& it appears Linus would agree w/ me on this one06:44

atari2600ayou'd experience slightly more success with a bug report07:00
atari2600abut once it hits beta you're in a feature freeze & all the work that's done is QA & bug fixing07:00
crimsonmaneso if i wanted to suggest they put a Restart button on the shutdown/suspend/hibernate section...07:00
jbichacrimsonmane: we're past UI freeze so you'd have to follow https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FreezeExceptionProcess07:03

HiDeHoseems strange10:04
jtaylorunity is based on gnome10:04
HiDeHojtaylor: i guess it is10:04
jtaylorso that works, kde and gnome are different, you can't get both on the cd completely10:05
HiDeHoreally i see so is unity a wm10:05
jtaylorunity is more a shell, like gnome shell10:05
jtaylorwm is compiz in unity10:05
HiDeHojtaylor: compiz is the fancy desktop effects how can that be a wm10:06
HiDeHoor why give it same name10:06
jtaylorcompiz is a compositioning window manager = wm10:06
HiDeHoi have compiz installed on my ubuntu 10.04 its nto a wm10:07
HiDeHocompiz handles the fancy desktop effects10:07
jtayloroh no, the upstream authors must be idiots calling their not wm a wm :O10:07
HiDeHoits an addon to gnome10:07
HiDeHojtaylor: i just wonder y they called the wm in unity compiz when name was already taken10:08
HiDeHojtaylor: i am not saying that at all10:08
jtaylor"unities compiz" is the same compiz10:08
jtaylorunity is a plugin to compiz10:08
HiDeHoand gnome is the shell10:09
HiDeHocorect??10:09
jtaylorgnome is a desktop enviroment10:09
HiDeHook i kind of get it10:09
HiDeHoi know gnome is a de10:09
HiDeHognome is the de openbox is a wm10:10
HiDeHojtaylor: ok that is not my understanding of it. also compiz-fusion10:12
HiDeHook well i thought gnome de was the shell that wm can run on10:12

PiciWellark: Oh! neat, congrats :)16:09
Braber01does anybody know how to get a split screen in the Termanitor Terminal?16:09
WellarkPici: the repository might just be out of sync ATM16:10

iheartubuntuhello! im testing Oneiric right now and it appears unable to make use of intel drivers. my graphics card is GMA 4500M. Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks!16:13
trismiheartubuntu: you can use: gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme 'ThemeName'; gnome-tweak-tool probably allows you to change it as well16:14
iheartubuntuty16:14
Wellarkhmm.. it seems that full-upgrade is broken ATM16:32
Wellarksafe-upgrade works16:32

rigvedhi eveyone. my mic is not working in the latest beta. it was working fine in lucid on the same machine. can anyone help?18:26
Exodusrigved, have you checked that the right input is selected?18:39
zonkersis there any screen savers in unity?18:45
rigvedExodus: there is only one input available.18:46
rigvedExodus: i checked alsamixer. it shows capture (which I am assuming is for mic). it is at full yet it does not work. i tested with the skype call testing service. i could no hear my own voice.18:48

rigvedExodus: any suggestions?19:05
Saviqrigved: have you checked in sound settings?19:06
Saviqthere's an "input" tab that has a VU meter19:06
Saviqwith it you can select inputs / ports19:07
rigvedSaviq: yes. it shows that internal mic is selected. i don't exactly have an internal mic. i connect an external headphone+mic to talk (and listen).19:08
Saviqand does the VU meter show something? did you try to up the volume?19:09
rigvedSaviq: also, when i talk, in lucid, the VU meter used to move. but in oneiric, it does not move at all.19:09
rigvedSaviq: volume is max19:09
rigvedSaviq: i mean, volume of the input is max19:09
Saviqsounds like a bug in the drivers, especially if you only have one capture source in alsamixer19:10
zonkersi'm running unity 2d. are there any screen save options?19:10
rigvedSaviq: how do i report this bug? which package?19:11
Saviqzonkers: don't think so, but it's not unity-specific19:11
SaviqI think it's GNOME3-specific actually19:11
zonkerssaviq: tx.. btw unity is much much better in new version19:12
rigvedzonkers: +119:12
Saviqrigved: something alsa19:12
rigvedSaviq: ok. thanks. i will file a bug against alsa.19:13
Saviqit will get triaged to the correct place19:13
rigvedSaviq: yes. i will explain the whole case. hope that will help it get triaged properly.19:14
zonkersi was anti-unity until installed this19:15

basaltevening19:37
basaltdoes anyone know what happened to the xulrunner packages in oneiric?19:37
XGaryGrigved, Yes.19:38
rigvedXGaryG: there is a bug in one of the packages. it will only allow you to sync your files. nothing else gets synced. it is supposed to be fixed by beta 2, hopefully.19:39
XGaryGOK. I'll stop playing with it then. I hope they include a way to import Google contacts into it.19:41
rigvedXGaryG: i think that there is a thunderbird plugin to sync your gmail contact with thunderbird locally. it's an add-on.19:42
XGaryGOK.  I'll look into it. Thanks.19:42

alex_mayorgaI keep getting apport but it does nothing when I click "Report problem..." and put my password, ideas?21:12
Exodusalex_mayorga, can you rephrase that into something people can understand maybe with some better details?21:16
alex_mayorgaExodus: I can try21:16
alex_mayorgaI boot into oneiric21:16
alex_mayorgaI get a "Report problem..." window and click report21:17
alex_mayorgaI get asked for my password21:17
alex_mayorgaI put in the password21:17
alex_mayorgathen nothing happens21:17
alex_mayorgathe "Report problem..."window keeps popping up over and over21:17
afiefI take it he's saying that he tries  to report problems, but apport disappears halfway through after he enters his password(into gksudo?)21:18
alex_mayorgaExodus: understandable now?21:18
Exodusalex_mayorga, that window will pop-up a lot for you. It doesn't mean you have to click report every single time it pops =)21:18
Exodusalex_mayorga, can you open a terminal and type: ubuntu-bug21:18
Exodusand Enter.21:18
ExodusDoes an application start up?21:19
alex_mayorgaExodus: yes21:19
alex_mayorgawith 5 options21:19
Exodusalex_mayorga, good, that is the tool you should use when you find a bug.21:19
Exodusalex_mayorga, generally you'll want a little insight prior to using the tool like: what package is affected by this bug I'm facing.21:20
alex_mayorgain my case that window keeps appearing automatically, I've reported bugs with it before, but in this case it just dies21:20
alex_mayorgathat's why I'm asking here21:20
Exodusalex_mayorga, yes, it is weird. Although I wouldn't worry too much about it. Those random bug reports that appear out of thin air are apport (same ubuntu-bug tool) over sensitive to several warnings and errors your system is collecting21:21
alex_mayorgaI guess I'd just ignore it then21:22
Exodusalex_mayorga, I recommend you not grief yourself over that one bug that got away as I'm sure it's been reported 1,000 times by other Ubuntu users and it's probably a minor GTK graphics complain coming from a running application.21:23
mongywhat do I do about startup applications, or rather, disabling what there is, which arent shown21:23
alex_mayorgaExodus: any tips to reduce "over sensitiveness"?21:24
Exodusmongy, which aren't show. You mean daemons? services? or just apps in the background of gnome?21:24
mongyExodus, basically, what should show up in startup applications app21:24
mongyExodus, its empty.  I like to remove certain things like remote desktop, bluetooth etc..21:25
Exodusmongy, ahh, I see. That window changed quite a lot.21:26
Exodusalex_mayorga, I haven't played around with that service tbh.21:27
Exodusalex_mayorga, but just ignore the ones that pop up randomly for now, it's that way because we're in beta.21:27

pimperlehi22:17
pimperlei'm trying to build the php5 package from oneiric in a virtual natty environment, and after rebuilding and installing libtool2.4 it still fails.22:19
pimperleis this the right channel to discuss this kind of issue?22:19
pimperlethe build process fails because lt_unset is undefined in the libtool script. This in turn should get patched during dpkg-source (according to the diff.gz file). The changes are however overwritten by the later invocation of buildconf.sh.22:20
pimperleas i installed the libtool version of natty, i would claim, that this package wouldn't compile under oneiric as well (which it obviously does).22:21
pimperlewhere should i look for this error. which part of the build process is probably failing on me?22:21
ChmEarlin 11.10/amd64 is this symlink a must? lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root     3 2011-09-08 15:21 lib64 -> lib22:22
ChmEarlis it always there?22:23
ExodusChmEarl, it's a must22:23
ExodusChmEarl, it's always there22:23
ChmEarlExodus, thanks -- without it, pygrub from xen fails22:23
ChmEarlmy oneiric xen dom0 with xen 4.1.1 from source is up and stable22:25
ChmEarlIOW this symlink has to be there /usr/lib64 -> lib22:28
pimperleto make things worse, i entered the chroot in which the compile failed and manually tried to build the package by removing the build-dir, setting it up with dpkg-source -x and then ran dpkg-buildpackge inside. This process failed 2 times but worked at the 3rd time, each time after i had removed and recreated the build dir.22:28
pimperlewhich channel could i discuss this issue in?22:28
urlin2upimperle, if it is oneiric this is the channel, don't Oneiric is in development22:31
urlin2uforget22:31
pimperlei restarted the job on my build-server now, and this time it looks more promising. i wonder if there is some kind of race condition in the build process, that will make this fail in 4 out of 5 times22:32
