[01:22] Mornin' all [12:03] hi [12:32] hi [12:33] * pcman just installed ubuntu 11.10 to see how it works. [12:33] After playing with unity for 3 minutes, I realized that I hate it so much! [12:33] The worst ubuntu UI ever. [12:33] :( [12:34] hehe, yeah I have it on my brand new eeepc 1015T and its damn slow with its compiz effects [12:34] slowness is not a problem. I use it on my thinkpad. [12:34] the ui itself isn't so bad if it would work faster [12:34] But the UI is really...I don't know what to say. [12:34] it's a little bit too creative. [12:35] I switched to unity2d which works faster and seems to be more stable [12:35] looks good, but hard to use. [12:35] I hate it so much! [12:35] Installation is finished! [12:35] time to reboot. [12:35] apt-get install lubuntu-desktop later! [12:35] I don't think its hard to use basically, as I am mostly using only the starters in the launcher or hotkeys [12:35] lol [12:35] leszek: I'm not using unity2d. [12:36] leszek: I'm using the default one in ubuntu. [12:36] :) [12:36] yeah unity3d basically [12:36] no idea how to use it correctly. [12:36] let's install lubuntu. [12:36] see you. [12:36] pcman: honestly the sense of lenses or how they call the new main menu in ubuntu makes no sense for me at all [15:04] re [16:11] evening. i'm trying to make the keyboard layout permanently norwegian (by changing /etc/default/keyboard), but still it keeps reverting back to american layout. anyone have some suggestions? [16:35] hi [16:35] is a p3 833mhz powerful enough for lubuntu [16:36] its a laptop.. 256 ram [16:37] bindi should be enough, yeah [16:40] canidae try this in a terminal (not sure if 'no' is norweigan): setxkbmap -layout no [16:40] if that works, an ugly solution would be to add the command in autostart [16:40] how long the install should load for [16:40] clicked install ubuntu and its taking a good while [16:42] bindi have patience :) [16:42] 10 mins [16:42] so far [16:43] wait a little longer to be sure, if you have problems with the graphical installer you could always use an alternate cd [17:05] is alternate install hard? will it have options to select or do i have to do everything by hand [17:40] frankbooth: we ran out of patience, reaallly slow .. trying alternate installer tomorrow [17:41] bindi http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/minimal [17:41] this guide is good, might want to check it out [17:42] after install is finished, simply do 'sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop' [17:42] yeah okay [17:42] --no-install-recommends! [17:43] opsie, thx bioterror :) [18:37] Anyone else who has experienced constant freezes of Lubuntu just as you're getting into the os? [18:38] (doesnt matter if I disable gui, still freezes) [18:43] tomeo, check your RAM [18:43] tomeo, if your mem is okay, check your hdd [18:44] bioterror: both ubuntu and crunchbang and windows run fine [18:44] lubuntu is same as your ubuntu [18:45] bioterror: if its the same, why are they two different distros? [18:45] becouse another one comes with GNOME and another comes with Openbox and LXDE [18:46] they are not [18:46] exactly same kernels and binaries [18:46] they use same packages, other installation media provides merely different userspace programs [18:48] so if you've run memtest86 and you're sure you dont have anything wrong with the hdd, we can start wondering what could cause the freeze [18:48] but I'm 100% it's hardware related [18:48] +sure [18:48] bioterror: could it be that my install media was corrupt? [18:48] have you checked md5? [18:49] bioterror: nah, im too big of a noob to work those things just yet [18:49] !md5 [18:49] To verify your Ubuntu ISO image (or other files for which an MD5 checksum is provided), see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM or http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/LQ_ISO/Checking_the_md5sum_in_Windows [18:49] this was my first attempt at installing linux :) [18:52] bioterror: okay I have the md5 sum of my image, but what is it supposed to be? [18:53] #toybox [18:54] tomeo, http://lubuntu.lafibre.info/11.04/MD5SUMS [18:54] bioterror: they add up [18:55] that's good [18:56] frankbooth: cheers, that seems to work, i'll just put that in a script that's run when i log in [18:56] bioterror: but wouldn't you say its quite odd if there is in fact a hardware error that ubuntu, crunchbang and windows all work? [18:56] s/that's run/that runs/ [18:57] tomeo, does your LiveCD crash or your installation? [18:57] bioterror: neither. after install and reboot Lubuntu works fine. Then when I reboot again it freezes [18:57] so I tried to reinstall [18:57] and exact same thing happened [19:00] you get just blinking "_"? [19:00] bioterror: no blinking, freeze [19:01] you cannot go to console by pressing CTRL+ALT+f1? [19:01] bioterror: nope, and I tried starting it as TEXT so that I didnt have a gui at all. still froze [19:11] hard case [19:11] tomeo, if you take ubuntu 11.04, it works flawlessly? [19:11] bioterror: yes [19:12] bioterror: but I dont want to use it as its very slow [19:12] and I hate the UI [19:12] you can always remove the gnome stuff ;) [19:12] Lubuntu was awesome when it worked :) [19:12] Even my multigesture trackpad was working [19:12] Sound wasnt working tho, but I bet I couldve got that working somehow [19:13] usually volume level is low in alsamixer [19:13] bioterror: I actually maxed it [19:13] in the terminal version of alsamixer [19:14] heh the panel menu button where you control the width of the bottom bar locked itself and just kept going higher and higher in width so i had to kill it and now my menu is gone ;) [19:14] I think I have to do the hda-intel thing to get the sound working on lubuntu [19:14] I wonder how I can bring it back without restarting my computerr [19:15] Soojin, goto console and restart lxdm [19:15] :) [19:15] if you kill panel, you cant run alt+f2 [19:16] so only good trick to start that panel is to restart X [19:16] ok:) [19:16] sudo service lxdm restart [19:22] is there any way to actually change the color of the corner clock? [19:22] little question, look gtk3-apps native in lubuntu 11.10 ? :) === tomeo2 is now known as tomeo [20:13] tomeo, I have to ask from jmarsden if there's something different in lubuntu when booting [21:41] bioterror: okay [21:43] but good night ;)
