[15:10] hi all [15:10] hello [15:11] i installed gnome 3 on ubuntu 11.04 a couple days ago. i like it, but i have just now run into a little hiccup that's puzzling me [15:11] after i installed gnome 3, i installed pidgin through the terminal, a la "sudo apt-get install pidgin" [15:12] now when i press the logo key and type pidgin in gnome 3, no matches come up, but i can go to the terminal and type pidgin and it runs [15:17] sorry, connection dropped. [15:17] I haven't used gnome 3 myself [15:17] I use LXDE [15:18] well, I guess he's gone [15:20] well i uninstalled and reinstalled it and now it's showing up. i'm going to try restarting the computer to see if it does it again [15:25] it might take it a bit to show up in the menus [15:26] I don't use gnome anymore and haven't tried gnome3 yet [15:26] course there might be a command to re-generate the menus too [15:27] ok, it seems like every time i restart, i get a message after the login screen that says something like "we encountered an error and we can't recover from it" with a restart button. i press the button and it doesn't actually restart, it just goes back to the login screen. i log in again and it goes to the desktop, no problem. but pidgin disappears again from gnome 3's applications while still being able to run from the terminal [15:28] i would create the menu shortcut manually [15:29] let me see if i can figure out how to do that ... [15:30] make sure there's a pidgin.desktop in /usr/share/applicatins [15:30] */usr/share/applications [15:30] gnome should be building the menu there [15:31] *from there [15:32] Launcher and Menus is the app that you create a new link in. [15:32] interesting, there is no pidgin.desktop in there ... [15:32] Well, I thought it was [15:33] This new interface isn't so friendly [15:34] ok, Main Menu is the app that lets you customise the menu. [15:34] Kwa, are you using the new unity thing? [15:34] no [15:34] I've only played with it briefly on a livecd [15:34] oh yea, you're using lxde [15:34] muh bad [15:35] if I was going to use it, I'd go with unity2d [15:35] Long ago my choice was Icewm [15:35] ok i added it ... going to restart and see if it sticks. i'll be back in a couple minutes. thanks for the help. brb [15:35] np [15:38] did not get the error screen. pidgin shows up in the menu now. thanks for the help [15:39] awesome [15:39] I'm guessing something wasn't allowing the .desktop file to be generated [15:40] which was what was crashing [15:40] i reckon so. otherwise, i really like gnome 3. it's pretty like kde, but to me it's more intuitive [15:44] brb fire alarm [15:44] I'm going to try both. [15:45] LOL [15:45] have fun on your break kwad [15:52] back [23:58] good evening
