cache_surplusquick question, i just loaded 10.04 LTS edubuntu and i want to switch to a different desktop/installation for i noticed during install from DVD 2.7 gig worth of different Desktop Managers. how do i switch like the old days where i can select kde or gnome but in the edubuntu OS for say a 4th grader05:49
cache_surplusis there a prompt during log in somewhere to switch between ed and some other ed version?05:49
cache_surplusthanks05:49
cache_surplusbasically be able to switch between the 5 options for diff desktops that i saw during install.05:50
tsimpsoncache_surplus: there should be an option in the menu on the login manager06:06
cache_surplusthere should be, i dont see it, here is a screen shot. point to where it is, please. thanks06:07
cache_surplushttp://ScrnSht.com/darfkr06:07
cache_surplusi just dont see it ... trust me i know what your talking about, but its not there06:07
cache_surplusall i see is shutdown, and UA access menu06:08
alkisgcache_surplus: click on the username first, then look at the bottom for the session + language menus06:10
alkisgJust before entering the password06:10
cache_surplushttp://ScrnSht.com/mbvjfi06:11
alkisgYes, there it is. Now if you install e.g. KDE you'll see it there06:11
cache_surplusyah got it, but now it doesnt show diff tertiary grade levels as promised lol06:11
cache_surplushow to switch from 2nd graders say to 8th graders06:12
alkisgWho promiced different sessions  per grade?!06:12
alkisgDo you mean the edubuntu menu editor?06:12
cache_surplusi guess06:17
cache_surplusim new to edubuntu but not linux06:17
cache_surplusi just tried a user defined session, i dont see anything were i can switch grades/programs06:18
alkisgThe edubuntu menu editor is just a program, you can run it normally once you've logged in06:18
cache_surplusok06:18
cache_surplusill log out and and back in, and work with menu editor, cool, but will it allow or show different predefined desktops06:18
alkisgNot desktop, just sets of menus06:18
cache_surplusok06:18
alkisgFor more customization, like e.g. panels, there's sabayon06:19
alkisgSometimes sabayon can be a bit unstable though06:19
cache_surplussaybayon?06:37
cache_surplusok, here is my question, in another way06:37
cache_surpluswhen i installed from 2.7 gig dvd that used up 15 gigs of drive space, it loaded specificed, desktop sessions that are supposed to be for different grade levels. i do not see how a kid is going to easily switch to those,,, its not intuitive nor menu driven from what i can see, UNLESS you know how to do it with a mouse, then I am all ears. im trying to do this for kids to use06:39
cache_surplussaybayon is what? menu creator?06:39
cache_surplusis it in repos?06:39
cache_surplusso where are the menus, is the bottomline question kids can switch to? i am using unity 2d at the moment, looks nice :) for kids06:40
alkisgcache_surplus: AFAIK edubuntu doesn't contain "specificed, desktop sessions that are supposed to be for different grade levels"06:45
alkisgIt contains *packages* for different grade levels, not sessions06:45
alkisgSo in the "education" menu you can find software for different grade levels. If you want to only show part of the education menu to specific groups, there comes edubuntu menu editor.06:46
alkisgGnome sabayon is this: http://live.gnome.org/Sabayon06:47
cache_surplusalkisg: have you loaded edbuntu recently? 10.04 LTS is what i have06:52
alkisgYes, I've loaded edubuntu 10.04, why?06:53
cache_surplusif you did, you will see it loaded up 5-6 different specified sessions with arrow drop downs to show that they were unique, i wish that was the case according to the splash/login/gdm menu06:53
cache_surplusit woudl have been nice06:53
cache_surplusno kid will figure this out at first/second/third glance06:54
cache_surplusim promoting this distro for kids06:54
cache_surplusas such06:54
alkisgI'm not sure I understand what you're saying, can you provide a screenshot?06:54
cache_surplusbut when i tried it today, i was disappointed, so to the powers that be, they should implement those menus like asap lol06:54
cache_surplusyah scroll up06:55
cache_surplusi did06:55
alkisgThe one I saw earlier, i.e. the login manager?06:55
cache_surplus(11:11:47 PM) cache_surplus: http://ScrnSht.com/mbvjfi06:55
alkisgOK let's step back a bit06:55
alkisgYou want different sessions per level, right?06:55
cache_surplusits funny in irc they say dont repost things lol... i disagree, i will repost like every 20 mins if i feel it just be done06:55
cache_surplusyes06:55
cache_surplusthats what i need06:55
alkisgI don't think edubuntu promiced that, and as I teacher I don't think it's appropriate either06:56
alkisgBecause different countries need different software per level06:56
cache_surplusso say, 1-3 grade users, pick this one, and so forth up to 12 grade06:56
cache_surplusit was really what i saw in the loading of it today, that made me say that06:56
alkisgSo, edubuntu should either provide hundreds of different sessions, per grade, and per country,06:56
alkisgor a customization method06:56
cache_surplusit was already specified by grades06:56
alkisgAnd now it provides the second part06:56
cache_surplusnot 11.x06:56
cache_surplusbut 10.04 LTS06:56
alkisgThose are packages, not sessions06:56
cache_surplusedubuntu06:56
alkisgYou can install all of them, and then separate them as you wish with e.g. the edubuntu menu editor06:57
cache_surplushow ever it said, it loaded up 15 gigs of space on the drive loading thousands of programs06:57
cache_surplusoh ok06:57
cache_surplusthis is what i am asking06:57
cache_surplusi loaded them all up correct06:57
cache_surpluswhere is the edubuntu menu editor06:57
cache_surplusi wish to seperate them06:57
alkisghttps://wiki.edubuntu.org/Edubuntu/Documentation/Edubuntu-menueditor06:57
cache_surplusi feel they are already seperated, at least thats how the install showcased it06:57
cache_surplusis that a screen shot link ?06:58
alkisgNo, it's a wiki tutorial link06:58
alkisgIt also has screenshots, just vist it06:58
cache_surplusi guess your not geting my point, it should be already menuedited... no kid will figure this out 1/2/3/4th glance06:58
cache_surplusok06:58
cache_surplusill go06:58
alkisgThis is for teachers06:58
alkisgNot for kids06:58
cache_surplusits for kids06:58
alkisgTeachers should use menu editor, not kids06:58
cache_surplusic06:59
cache_surplusthat helps :)06:59
cache_surplusyou mean the menu editing stuff06:59
alkisgKids would only want to install their grade package06:59
cache_surplusgot it06:59
alkisg(in their homes)06:59
cache_surplusok so the menuconfig is where07:00
alkisgLook, there are many use cases beside yours... e.g. for some countries primary education = 4 years, for others = 7 years07:00
cache_surplusi can figure out the rest, i just thought i was done already07:00
alkisgThere has to be some finer-grained customization tool, like theedubuntu menu editor07:00
alkisgSee the wiki link I posted07:00
alkisgIt explains where to find and how to use the menu editor07:00
cache_surpluslastly, is there a place a file was stored/log if you will of that initial menu i checked during install?07:01
cache_surplusis that on the dvd, where is that script07:01
cache_surplusname of it,, would help. i find it07:01
Nubaealkisg: sounds interesting, would you mind bringing me up to speed as to what the changes are for the latest buntu releases... Am afraid I've been slightly out of touch, working on other things.... man needs to eat ;-)07:44
alkisgHi Nubae. I'm not 100% up to date myself, as I'm doing my phd, so I too have yet to catch up with the latest edubuntu changes07:45
alkisgI know about the edubuntu menu editor, and about unity 2d in 11.04, but I don't know much else07:45
alkisgGuess we'll have to read the wiki + try it for ourselves when we have the time :)07:46
alkisgWhere are you now? In Spain?07:47
Nubaeyeah still here07:47
NubaeLikely that London or Dublin may be proximal destinations07:47

Nubaeunlocking/unblocking consoles/mobile phones07:48
alkisgI like how open you are to env. changes, changing countries like that07:49
NubaeIt only becomes interesting though when larger quantities are asked for07:49

Nubaenot settling down means women tend to shy away from my adventerous spirit07:50
Nubaeand babies aren't exactly my strong suit so07:50
alkisgOf course I've travelled a lot, but never stayed for a long time outside my home town other than that07:51
alkisg:D07:51
alkisgHehe, let's see what you have to say about that in 5, 10 years07:51
Nubaeah.... vacationing tourist ;-)07:51
alkisgWhen some woman has given you 3-4 babies07:51
Nubaeoh god... what are u saying07:51
