almoxarifeI am running the newest version of plasma, not used kde before, so far things are working generally well, with a few exceptions, there are apps that normally require sudo to run that I am finding will start without the prompt for the password, I am not sure if it's a bug or some unset thing I missed, the kde version of updates and login settings to name a few05:30
almoxarifeany thoughts?05:31
almoxarifebtw, this is after swearing off gnome shell, I am done with it05:31

almoxarifehello05:36
jillceehi almoxarife05:38
jillceeJames.. are you on tonight?05:47
jillceeis rekong a good browser?05:49
avihayalmoxarife: the package manager will ask you for a password only after you actually ask it to apply the change (for which you need root authorization), or atleast that's how it's supposed to be. and 11.10 is still in the beta phase, so it might still be broken05:52
almoxarifeavihay: these packages were already prompted for upgrade, that didn't work, so I tried to individually pick them, no dice their either, I am thinking something is broke, I just don't have an idea where to look05:53
avihayjillcee: well, it works. I find it kind of a memory hog, and a bit unstable, and it doesn't have the awsome array of firefox plugins (yet)05:54
jillceeso firefox is better.. (i'm running kubuntu for the first time here.. trying to figure stuff out.. no sound or video yet.)05:55
almoxarifeI got into chromium when it first came out, have not left it since, although it may also be a memory hog, not sure since I don't use anything else now, its fastttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt and that's what I want05:55
avihayalmoxarife: try to install some small package, see if it prompts you for a password or fails. if you are in the process of updating, then you can't do any other package operation05:56
jillceei was told kubuntu was better then ubuntu..  (something about kde better then gnome... whatever that means..hehe)05:57
avihayfirefox is different. I find chromium as kind of a memory hog too. I usually use Firefox for browsing, Chromioum for Google's services and ReKonq for face-book05:58
jillceeall i usually do on my computer is browse or watch netflix movies .. i hope kubuntu can do thatt05:59
avihayjillcee: you are working with a beta version, expect stuff to be partially broken.06:00
jillceei bought 5 of those 11.04 disks06:00
jillceehow do you open a shell prompt ?06:33
tsimpsonjillcee: open konsole06:37
jillceei don't know how tsimpson.. sorry i'm new to this06:40
jillceei just figured out that ctrl-alt f1 opens a black screen (similar to dos) and ctrl-alt f8 closes it06:41
tsimpsonjillcee: it's in the menu, probably under "System". or just press Alt-F2 and type in "konsole"06:41
tsimpsonthen press return06:41
tsimpsonthere's no need to switch to a TTY to use the shell06:42
jillceethank you tsimpson06:43
tsimpson:)06:44
jillceei'm trying to figure out how to install flash player06:44

cherDoes anybody else experience extremely strange problems regarding the mouse lately? xwininfo: error: Can't grab the mouse.22:07
cherI can move the mouse, but if I click any of the buttons no matter where on the screen, it's only the maximize button of Quassel that responds, which was the last button I successfully used this time before the strange behavior started.22:08
cherWhen I move the mouse to the bottom of the screen, the bar doesn't appear. To open the KDE menu, I have to use Alt+F1. Hovering the menu then has no effect, clicking neither. I can only use the keyboard.22:10
cherThe wheel doesn't respond either.22:10
Babilozzomy mouse work great and my other bluetooth mouse works on natty , all autoconfiguring , cher may try with other mouse, or check xorg.conf for unneeded parameters will make conflicts...22:16
cherThe mouse hw works fine.22:16
Babilozzolol22:16
cherxwininfo: error: Can't grab mouse - that's the pointer.22:16
cherIt's a logitech mx-518. I'm using those for years successfully with Linux. And I already changed because I first doubted the batteries of my wireless Logitech Cordless MouseMan Optical.22:17
cherBut xwininfo clearly says this is a software issue.22:17
Babilozzo:D maybe if you not deep searching on google for xwininfo?22:18
cherAll I find on Google for now is bug reports from people with the same problem, but not solutions. Also, lots of web sites are nearly impossible to use with keyboard. Makes googling a bit hard...22:19
Babilozzoeh ouch :D22:19
Babilozzomouse run with live cd?22:20
cherI'd have to reboot. And argl, my Chrome just quit without me doing anything. :( I was just about reading a forum that looked like it described a solution >:(22:23
cherBut it points to compiz.22:23
cherGotta restart X because the KDE control panel doesn't allow me to select anything else but the settings from the first row using the keyboard.22:25
cherMaybe I found the solution. I disabled all Copmiz stuff, then only enabled those very few things I'm really interested in. That's what someone in a forum did when he had this problem, and for him that helped.22:35
Babilozzoif you make a new account and login from it?22:35
Babilozzosometimes per user setting will corrupt it22:36
cherI didn't change anything iirc, this is a fresh PC, fresh setup. Approx. 4 weeks old, not used a lot, and all I did is install Android SDK, IntelliJ IDEA and did some Android dev.22:37
Babilozzoha ok if is fresh.. Im out of ideas22:38
cherThe Compiz changes seemed to help. For now, like the guys on the Forums and on launchpad for Ubuntu (Unity as well as Gnome), I blame Compiz.22:41
Babilozzobut xserver control input devices , so you will try to reinstall xserver related packages22:41
cherWhy? It's working now. The problem is gone after I changed Compiz.22:42
Babilozzoor or check xorg log output22:42
Babilozzoha ok22:42
Babilozzocompiz is very bad :D22:43
cherHe the logs, good idea of course, but so obvious I already checked them. When I didn't find something in the logs, I tried xev and xwininfo. That's how I found out that something messes around with the mouse in X.22:43
cherThe idea of Compiz is good, but I feel like it's a bit beta still.22:43
Babilozzowell compiz sucks with some hardware configurations22:44
Babilozzohehe :D22:45
* Babilozzo hoohh!! it's too late for me, byeez!22:45
meirhow do I get thw Adobe flash  player into  fire fox .. anyone please22:46
chermeir: Is flash installed?22:48

chermeir: After that, flash should work perfect in firefox, konqueror, rekonq, chrome, opera, seamonkey...22:49
meiroh , ok thanks22:49
chermeir: Currently, the flashplugin-installer updates sometimes break the symlinks, and sudo apt-get install --reinstall flashplugin-installer is an easy way to fix that without messing around with stuff manually.22:50
