voltyhi, accented characters (french) in file names drive me crazy and I can't remember how I solved this in my previous installation, at least hints pls01:00

LordCrchi, is there some knobs i can tweak to make strigi work harder?01:19
LordCrcit's hardly using any cpu and seems to be taking it's own sweet time indexing01:20
shane2peruwow, pidgin just started eating 100% cpu??? that is odd.02:54
shane2peruany thoughts?02:54
LordCrcbug?02:59
LordCrcnow, strigi, is it supposed to work, or just take cpu time and disk space? :)03:00
valorieLordCrc: right-click on the strigi symbol > Configure file indexing03:29
valorieyes, it's supposed to index your files' metadata03:30
LordCrcok, so what can i use to search file contents?03:30
LordCrcthats what id like03:30
LordCrci thought this was strigi's work, but it's not working at all for me, so :/03:32
LordCrcit should work in dolphin right? click on find, toggle "contents" and off you go?03:32
LordCrcactually, it's kinda working03:33
LordCrcseems its not indexing all files03:33
LordCrcthat's a bummer, and i only see ways to exclude files, not include03:33
LordCrcthat kinda makes the whole thing kinda pointless for me03:34
LordCrc:(03:34
valorie!strigi03:37
ubottuServices to index files for fast searching include: Beagle (front-ends: beagle, catfish, gnome-main-menu, mozilla-beagle for !GNOME; kerry, kio-beagle for !KDE; beaglefs for !CLI) - Tracker (tracker-search-tool, libdeskbar-tracker for GNOME; tracker-utils for CLI) - Strigi (strigi-applet, strigi-client for KDE, strigi-utils for CLI) - Kat (for KDE) - Pinot (and pinot-applet for GNOME) - Doodle (for CLI)03:37
valoriehuh03:37
valorieI didn't know very much of that at all03:37
valorieso I guess what I would say is that strigi is a work in progress03:37
LordCrcok, if i disable strigi, will dolphin do "brute force" search in file contents?03:41
LordCrcie actually find the stuff03:41
LordCrcthere's so much i'd like to like in kubuntu... but it's not always that easy ;)03:44
LordCrcah yes it did03:48
LordCrcwell thats a nice workaround then03:48
LordCrcslower than i'd like but03:48
LordCrcat least it finds the correct files....03:48
LordCrcthanks though :)03:51

kbroulikwill the email notifier in kubuntu be patched to accomodate the newest changings in systemtray behavior, i. e. it autorides whenever possible?10:12
szalautorides?10:18
kbroulikautohides, sorry10:18
kbroulikI have all my system tray icons set to automatic, the only icons that reside there atm are the volume control (always there), apper (new updates) and … the message indicator10:19
kbroulikI think with 4.8 it should autohide if there is no new message instead of autohiding only if there is no application running (which is always the case her, either kmail (which is not shown anymore o.O) or quassel or kopete)10:19
* szal doubts that any 4.8 stuff will be backported to 4.610:20
kbroulikI'm not talkinga bout backports ;) I mean when 4.8 then arrives10:21

KingSphinxI found time to do a clean reinstall of Ubuntu this morning, and went with Kubuntu 64-bit. So far, it seems everything works wonderfully... everything, that is, except sound in Flash (I installed it through the sevencomputers PPA). Anyone know how to get sound working in 64-bit Flash?16:19
KingSphinxIf it helps, I have sound routed through my Logitech USB headset, and I can hear everything else just fine, just no sound in Flash.16:20
BluesKajKingSphinx, the sevenmachines 64 bit flash ppa is no longer the the best methos ..afaik the the repos now contain the latest flash . just install from your package manager or with sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer in the terminal16:48
BluesKajKingSphinx, I just discovered this 2 days ago ... nothing to be concerned about16:52
winuthi guys. can you install 2 phonon backend together or do they conflict? thanks16:53
winutmy dad installed the phonon vlc backend and when he selected it in amarok, it crashed straight away. using 10.10 kubuntu16:54
winuthe still has the gstreamer in there also16:54
winutit crashed with an alsa error from terminal launch16:55
winuthe has an emu 0404 pci card16:56
winutany ideas? i know you lot like you av :-)17:01
James147winut: phonon backends should not conflict.. and you can select an order of prefence to use in phonons settings (in system settings)17:02
winutany ideas why it might crash then (vlc backend) ?17:02
winutthx btw17:02
BluesKajwinut, you choose the backend in phonon backend tab with prefer or defer17:03
James147winut: not sure.. though I would check phonon to see which you are actually using17:03
BluesKajand don't forget to choose apply :)17:03
winutmaybe this need to be set in system setting as default before it can take precedence17:03
winut?17:03
winutill get my dad to check this later on, thanks17:04
KingSphinxNope, tried the regular Flash plugin provided by the repos, didn't work.17:04
BluesKajwinut, yes system settings>multimedia>phonon backend17:05
winuti user the ppa on 64bit and it works perfect :-)17:05
winutthanks BluesKaj :-)17:05
BluesKajwinut, you're on 11.10 right ?17:05
winutyeah17:06
* James147 always found the flash in the repos worked fine on 64bit17:06
James147^^ though sometimes reinstalling it is needed17:06
winutso you don't need that then now for flash on 64bit with this version?17:07
James147(apt-get install --reinstall ...)17:07
winutseems a bit odd :-)17:07
BluesKajI lost the ppa in 11.10 , it got stripped in an update/upgrade and gpg error came up when I tried to reinstall the sevenmachines 64bit flash , so i installed from the repos ...it works fine now17:07
KingSphinxSo the regular Flash plugin in the repos would've worked fine? Man... when I tried it after uninstalling the SevenComputers version, Firefox was telling me I needed to install Flash.17:08
BluesKajKingSphinx, you have to delete the sevenmachines ppa and update then install from the repos17:09
lichhi17:10
KingSphinxDoes Kubuntu come with a tool for managing PPAs or do I still have to edit sources.list to do stuff like removing a PPA?17:10
BluesKajKingSphinx, /etc/apt/sources.list.d , open it with dolphin in the run command box17:11
BluesKajalt+f2 , kdesudo dolphin  /etc/apt/sources.list.d17:12
winutBLueskaj: i got around the gpg error by removing the apt entries afterwards then closing and re opening repositories to add the ppa in again then it worked17:14
winutusing synaptic17:14
winutThis seemed to happen on all ppas i added17:15
BluesKajyes adding to the repos in package managers works as well , removing them the same way worl=ks too if they're listed17:15
winuti'm glad you mentioned the gpg error tho, any idea if that can be fixed?17:16
winutseems to happen on all ppa's when you add them to synaptic, the ppa gpg doesn't take unless you do that workaround i described17:17
BluesKajyes winut the ppa has to be removed , you won't need it after the app is installed anyway ...ppas are temporary fixes til the actual developed apps are ready for primetime  and the official repos17:18
winuti use them all the time and they worked fine in ubuntu, this is a bug :-)17:19
winutlike i say, ppas will work if you do that workaround, not talking about flash here17:19
winuteven the one you had problems with would work as well17:20
BluesKajI'm pretty sure mine got stripped out during an update17:20
winutnot that you need it in this instance17:20
winutyeah, it gets greyed out17:20
winutor deselected17:20
BluesKajit wasn't even listed in synaptic or the sources.list.d17:20
winutyou should see it in synaptic17:21
BluesKajnope wasn't there17:21
winutok, well we were using ubuntu before17:21
winutand just wiped / and installed kubuntu17:21
winutbest way :-)17:22
winutkubuntu 10.10 is 100% more stable than ubuntu 10.10, but this maybe more down to ubuntu using a different nvidia driver?17:23
winutso anyone else hear using 10.10? apart from BluesKaj ?17:24
BluesKajwinut, no the gnome desktop /unity and other gnomes have problems17:25
BluesKaj11.10 here not 10.1017:25
winutsorry, my bad! meant 11.10. BluesKaj, can you try another ppa just to see if you can add one ok? thanks17:26
winutyou might be able to confirm this bug for me17:26
BluesKajwinut, what bug ?17:27
winutthe ppa gpg bug17:27
winutin synaptic17:27
winuti was trying to explains, affects all ppa adding17:28
winuti don't just use ppa's for temporary fixes, but software too, like nightly firefox and lmms, moblock etc17:30
OerHekswinut, which ppa ? maybe it is not available for 11.10 yet17:30
winutok, let me find one for you to try, trust my, it affects all of them17:31
winutok, how about this for a test -> https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wine/+archive/ppa17:31
OerHeksi can imagine, if you run the beta, not all ppa's are up to date.17:31
winuteven it it says oneiric?17:32
OerHekswhen i select oneiric, it says newer version available.17:33
winutok, so it worked ok?17:33
winutno gpg errors adding that to your sources after refresh?17:34
winuti add them in repositiories in synaptic17:34
winuti tried muon but it almost killed my install17:35
winutsee, they do have the right ppa for 11.10 -> https://launchpad.net/~sevenmachines/+archive/flash17:36
winutso you shouldn't get any errors17:36
OerHekshard to say what is wrong, dit you try ask in #Ubuntu+1 , that channel is for oneiric support.17:37
winut:-)17:37
winutsure, i'm in there now17:38
mokushany idea how I could update a plasmoid I installed from source?17:40
winutall of them :-)17:40
winutsorry, i scrolled up a bit accidentally! lol17:41
OerHeksmokush, if you build yourself, you need to download & build updates yourself too.17:43
mokushOerHeks: so I should just download the new source and recompile, re-install? and it will install over the old one, therefore update?17:43
OerHeksmokush, yes and yes17:44
mokushOerHeks: sounds good, thanks!17:44
mokushanother question, does anybody keep an up2date package of http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Icon+Tasks?content=144808 in some ppa?17:44

pedahzurmarkit: Looks like it goes in a config file somewhere. For me, it becomes a little plasmoid object (gives me the X, config, etc. when I hover over it.)21:54
markitpedahzur: yes, but really breaks the "Desktop mental association"21:54
markitpeople in M$ os are used to drop icons on the desktop, and they find them in Desktop folder21:55
markithere we have a useless desktop folder and desktop view21:55
pedahzurmarkit: Kind of...you have to keep in mind that the "Desktop" in KDE 4 is no longer ~/Desktop21:55
markitI'm confused... I don't love M$ usage, but I do love logical and easy to grasp aproach, this is not21:55
pedahzurThe Desktop folder view is kind of a hold-over. I don't *think* you'll have ~/Desktop in a new KDE4 install.  it's a hold-over, I believe.21:56
markitif you run a live cd of Kubuntu 11.04, you have a ~/Desktop21:56
pedahzurHmm...21:57
markitand also has a different icon in dolphin than normal folders (and I don't understand why)21:57
pedahzurHere's what I found in ~/.kde: share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc:Url=file:///usr/share/applications/gimp.desktop21:57
markitso you have a "special" Desktop folder, that is not realted with real desktop21:57
markitpedahzur: so as you suspected is a plasmoid... isn't so confusing?21:58
pedahzurmarkit: A little, yeah.21:59

sea4everThanks22:02
markitbtw, I had the experience that the "Search and lunch" activity does not show the plasma-desktop used usually by netbooks, but the normal one... any idea?22:03

pedahzurmarkit: Oh, 'launch'? :)22:05
pedahzurAre you talking about the filter on the start menu, or the Alt-F2 launcher?22:05
markitin kde 4.7 you have a icon near K menu, or in any case with upper right "don't remember it's name" you can run the activity chooser22:06
markitthen you use the "search and launch"22:06
pedahzurmarkit: Not familiar with that...or at least not by that name.22:09
BarkingFishare others here running 4.4.7 without issue?22:11
BarkingFishI have the updates waiting, but I've not added them yet.22:11

fluke_yea i use it to trouble shoot my windows pc's23:09
=== whoami is now known as Guest3963
pedahzurfluke_: That might help, but won't let me see the whole issue, as it sounds like the monitor config thinks you have one screen.23:11
pedahzurfluke_: Ok, I have teamviewer up.  Let's give it a try.23:12
