AxlinHey guys. I'm having some trouble launching Tomboy on Kubuntu 11.04. I filed a bug report at Launchpad.net, but I figured I might as well ask on IRC as well, in case anybody could point me in the right direction sooner. Here's the report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tomboy/+bug/85227800:21
ubottuUbuntu bug 852278 in tomboy (Ubuntu) "Tomboy does not launch - "Unhandled Exception" - Kubuntu 11.04" [Undecided,New]00:21
edoceoHey, I'm trying the LiveCD out, 11.04 32bit, but rekonq keeps crashing out :(00:32
macer1Hi Axlin00:49
macer1it looks like tomboy depends on gnome00:49
macer1[DEBUG 17:04:31.562] Failed to register with session manager: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service files00:49
AxlinWould there be a specific package I'm missing? I've had Tomboy working on Kubuntu before, and I've never had to install the GNOME shell. But maybe I'm missing some sort of dependency?00:52
macer1I don't have my ubuntu 11.10 machine at this time to look into this...00:53
macer1but maybe file is corrupted?00:53
AxlinI should also mention that this is a reinstall of Kubuntu 11.04. Tomboy worked on my last installation, and as part of the reinstallation process, I used dpkg --get-selections to get a log of installed packages, and reinstalled all of them with dselect for the new installation. I should have an equivalent set of installed packages.00:53
AxlinCould be, yeah. The thing that's catching my eye is the mention of "<filename unknown>"00:54
macer1hmm00:55
macer1maybe you miss some package - like libgnome2.0-cil?00:55
AxlinI tried installing that through APT, and it said that the package isn't available, but is referred to/replaced by: libgnome2.24-cil libgnome2.0-cil-dev libgnome-vfs2.0-cil libgconf2.0-cil libart2.0-cil00:57
AxlinI ran a dpkg -l on all of those, and they're all installed.00:57
macer1ctor - constructor01:00
macer1incorrect header for constructor...01:00
macer1hmm01:02
AxlinI just did a Google search for "Missing or incorrect header for method .ctor". I'm finding a number of bug reports related to Gnome-Do having a similar issue. Kinda sounds like this might be related to Mono/Mono apps in general.01:06
AxlinBut they generally fixed it by deleting Gnome-Do's config directory, which unfortunately didn't help my case.01:06
macer1I googled this error, but not finded anything useful01:08
AxlinYeah, me neither. Although I did do something interesting. I installed Banshee, since I know that's also a Mono app, and it, too, refuses to launch, citing some of the same errors.01:10
AxlinMissing or incorrect header for method .ctor, Missing or incorrect header for method get_Add01:10
Axlin  at Banshee.Daap.DaapService.ThreadedInitialize () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 , etc.01:10
macer1hmm :/01:11
macer1maybe it is better idea to attach this bug to mono, not tomboy.01:11
AxlinYeah, probably.01:13
AxlinIt's definitely looking like a Mono issue.01:13
macer1ok, done.01:13
macer1now it affects mono01:13
AxlinHah! I fixed it. I just re-installed every Mono package I have, and it's launching beautifully.01:15
AxlinThanks for your help, macer101:15
macer1I was happy to try help ;)01:16
macer1Can I mark you bug as invalid now?01:16
macer1*your01:16
AxlinYeah, absolutely.01:16
macer1Can you write on bug report that mono reinstall helped ;)?01:17
AxlinShould I follow up with an explanation? I've never dealt with the bug reporting system. Not sure what the generally-accepted practice is.01:17
AxlinYep, I'll do that.01:17
macer1Thanks :) Maybe it will be useful for somebody in future :)01:17
AxlinI hope so!01:18
macer1:)01:18
macer1oops. marked it as incomplete01:20
macer1accidently01:20
AxlinHehe01:21
AxlinThanks again for helping me narrow down the problem.01:21
AxlinI'm going to hop off the computer now :)01:22
macer1do you written something in bug report ;)?01:22
AxlinYep, I did.01:22
macer1Thanks :)01:23
macer1Marking as invalid now01:23
xieyiI am having problem that I can't send mail with kmail if I enclose a accessory in the mail01:50
xieyiI found that the accessory name can't be displayed properly01:51
xieyithe error message is "invalid transmission method"01:51
xieyiI am using Chinese version so the translation may not valid01:51
xieyiis there anyone experiencing the same problem?01:52
edoceoHey, I'm trying the LiveCD out, 11.04 32bit, but rekonq keeps crashing out - any ideas?02:07
edoceoOh, huh.  I was in a KVM.  Using the cirrus video driver fails, using "std" works - but graphics are slow02:08

jbuhi all: I'm looking for an alternative to ubuntu that isn't unity or gnome3 based and am looking at kubuntu, but all my past exp. w/ kde has been that it's really buggy...can anyone speak for 11.04 kubuntu?21:26
winutmy dad uses kubuntu 11.10, works fine for him21:27
winuthowever, he uses synaptic as muon is bust in this version!21:28
jbu11.10?21:28
winuti'm sure it will be fixed eventually and will be much better than synaptic21:28
winutyeah, beta21:29
winutit has kde 4.7 :-)21:29
jbui've used kde before and it works almost perfectly but just minor bugs everywhere21:29
KimlarouxI went back to 10.04.... more stable = more usable21:29
jbui just want to know if it's still the same way21:29
winuti tried ubuntu 11.10 but that was like hell on earth21:29
Kimlarouxit hasn't changed... well actually yes it did : now it's almost impossible to manually fix those annoying bugs21:30
jbu:( this is depressing guys21:30
Kimlarouxdoesn't stop me from using kubuntu and nothing else though21:30
jbuwinut, so your dad has no problem w/ 11.10 but you found it really bad?21:31
Kimlarouxit depends how you use it21:31
jbuat the time i tried kubuntu last, i was using kde in the most basic way21:31
winutubuntu 11.10 had too many show stopping bugs, made us switch to kde21:31
jbumust've been 10.04 or 10.1021:31
jbui guess i'll check out xfce21:32
jbuit's just so...ugly21:32
winutand my dad prefers it, as it has some really good apps, like k3b, amarok, kate etc21:32
jbukate is amazing21:33
jbukate just loads up SOOO slowly in gnome21:33
jbuprobably expected21:33
winutalso the chat program is amazing :-)21:33
winutbetter irc client i have ever seen21:33
jbuwinut, what's it called?21:33
winutkopete?21:33
jbuah yes21:34
KimlarouxQuassel21:34
winutsorry, quassel21:34
KimlarouxInterrestingly, I never tried it21:34
Kimlarouxmaybe I should, people seems to like it21:35
winutim using osx atm, but will surely run kubuntu or xubuntu on my laptop when its fixed21:35
winutit has chat replay and stuff like that21:35
winutso if you reboot you know where you are. also kde supports window memory as well21:35
nikolaif you want stable system install kubuntu 11.04 and update it to kde 4.6.521:36
winutwhat is the package manager for that?21:36
winutnikola: 11.0421:36
nikolago to kubuntu.org and download 11.04 version21:37
nikolait is super stable. at least for me :)21:38
jbuhow can people stick around with kde?  it's been unstable for so long (at least in my experience)21:39
jbuoops just started a flamewar probably21:39
nikolanewest vesion 11.10 which will be released in october is buggy at the moment21:39
nikolajbu install 11.04 and update kde from default 4.6.2 to 4.6.521:40
nikolaand it will be rock solid21:40
jbunikola, thanks, i might try it out today21:40
nikolajbu: for newest bugfix release 4.6.5 you have to install kubuntu ppa ( sudo apt-add-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa )21:42
nikolajbu: and if you want the best performance my advice is to turn off vsync and blur effect in desktop effect21:43
nikola:)21:43
jbuoh ok thanks21:45
jbui think ill be trying kubuntu today and if that's even the least bit buggy im headed to xubuntu21:45
nikolaonce you get used to kde, it is very hard to go back to anything else :)21:46
nikolagood night everybody21:47
jbugood night? jeez where are u21:47
jbugoodnight21:47
nikolaeurope :)21:47
jbuah ok21:47
nikolait is 11.50 pm here21:47
nikolac ya21:47
marquee_howdy21:57
marquee_is there anyone here that can answer a quick kpackagekit question?21:58
valorieyes: use Muon instead22:01
valorie:-)22:01
valoriebut seriously, marquee_ -- just ask your question22:03
valorieif someone can help, they will22:03
marquee_cool thanks22:09
marquee_umm i just downloaded and isntalled kubuntu22:09
marquee_and after booting, first thing I did was run kpackagekit to update everything22:09
marquee_right now though,22:10
marquee_its stuck on language-pack-kde-en-base22:10
=== kris_ is now known as Guest47633
marquee_should i just cancel it and update everything again?22:10
marquee_or is there another fix?22:10
szalis there no KDE 4.7.1 for Natty?22:13
szalthe kubuntu-backports PPA still has 4.7.022:13
DaemonFC4.7.1 is only in Oneiric right now22:14
szalis it planned to be pushed into backports?22:14
DaemonFCno clue22:15
MindoloHola a todos22:16
OerHeksszal no, afaik22:17
Mindoloklk22:17
valorieyikes, marquee22:19
valorieI've been there22:19
* valorie hates kpackagekit22:19
valorieand we no longer use it by default, as of Oneiric22:19
valorie!dpkg22:20
ubottudpkg is the Debian package maintenance system, which together with apt forms the basic Ubuntu package management toolkit.22:20
szalOerHeks: hmm..  what's the use of having 4.7.0 when 4.7.1 won't be pushed?22:20
valorie4.7.0 is good22:20
hallmanAm I correct to assume that egit was for some reason taken out of the package repositoy - and therefore uninstalled on my system? This pisses me off to no end22:21
valorie!info egit22:21
ubottuPackage egit does not exist in natty22:21
hallmanI'm not sure if the package name was "egit"..22:21
valorie!egit22:21
hallmanProbably not then22:21
hallmanBut that's the name of the program. git plugin for eclipse.22:22
valorie!info eclipse22:22
ubottueclipse (source: eclipse): Extensible Tool Platform and Java IDE. In component universe, is optional. Version 3.5.2-8ubuntu3 (natty), package size 18 kB, installed size 120 kB22:22
valoriepossibly there is a new plugin for the update?22:22
hallmanCan't find anything suiting when I search for eclipse or git22:23
hallmanIt seems gone22:23
hallmanAnd it's definitely gone from my system22:23
valoriehmmm, and no #eclipse22:23
valoriebut there certainly is a #git22:23
valoriewhatup, alis?22:24
hallmanThey're not the ones fucking things up22:24
valorieI spoke too soon22:25
valoriedo the command /msg alis list *eclipse*22:25
valorieand choose the best one22:25
valoriekubuntu can't provide packages which aren't available22:25
valorieor won't build22:25
valorie!update22:26
ubottuFor upgrading, see the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes - see also http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/upgrade22:26
hallmanSurely the ubuntu people put together their own manifests or whatever they need for the package system to intstall software? Like every other dist out there..22:26
valorieindeed, but upstreams provide most applications which are then packaged22:27
marquee_so i should just use kpackage to get oneiric22:28
hallmanHowever it works, seems pretty shitty to just remove it from the package system and hence, MY system22:28
marquee_and once I got oneiric, never use kpackagekit again?22:28
hallmanRather than just leaving it until the update works22:28
hallmanOr whatever the problem is now22:28
valoriehallman, what I would do is stop the download22:30
valoriethen do, in a console: dpkg --configure -a22:30
valoriethen do sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade22:30
valoriein Oneiric, you'll have to choose kpk deliberately22:30
valorieand now you can choose Muon if you want22:31
valoriehallman, if it doesn't work, or doesn't build, why would it be included?22:31
valorieif the developer of the plugin didn't update it to the next version of eclipse, It Won't Work22:32
valorieKubuntu doesn't want to deliver packages that Won't Work22:33
valorieyou may be able to roll back your eclipse, I don't know22:33
marquee_valorie, this is kinda nooby question, but how do i use dpkg?22:34
hallmanfine, thanks for the suggestions. I'll just use command line git in the meanwhile..22:34
=== sythe is now known as sythe-away
marquee_is it terminal only? or is there a way to run it in a ui?22:34
marquee_gui*22:34
valoriesorry I couldn't help more, hallman22:34
valoriemarquee_: you can run it in Konsole22:34
valoriealt+f222:35
valoriethen type Konsole22:35
valorieyou don't have to go to a terminal22:35
marquee_whats the command to just search for updates for everything?22:35
marquee_like kpackage22:35
valoriesudo apt-get update22:35
marquee_thats it?22:36
marquee_wow22:36
valoriebut then if you want to upgrade, it's best to do dist-upgrade, as I typed above22:36
marquee_i thought it was something different than apt22:36
valoriethis is why people learn to use the cli22:36
valorieit's quick and fast22:36
marquee_k i'll keep both commands in archive, thanks22:36
valorieI like the guis also22:36
valoriebut the cli is fast, and so much more reliable22:37
valorieespecially than kpk22:37
hallmanvalorie: Would you know if egit will magically appear for me again when it is deemed stable again? Or will I have to look out for it?22:37
valorieI don't know -- I would google around for the egit project, and get in touch with the developer22:37
hallmanAlrighty.. thanks again22:38
valoriemost devels like to hear from users who like their stuff22:38
valorieyour contact could be what makes them wake up and update22:38
valorie:-)22:38
marquee_i got another qeustion: on the site, it says that 11.04 won't be supported bast october22:38
valorieno, that's incorrect22:38
marquee_will i still be able to just use sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade at that time to get the official 11.04 isntead of the beta?22:39
valoriein October, 11.10 comes out22:39
valoriebut that doesn't mean that 11.04 loses support22:39
marquee_ah22:39
marquee_well thanks a ton22:40
marquee_i'll be back if i run into other issues, I hope you'll still be around valorie :P22:40
valorieheh, I'm far from the most knowlegeable here22:40
marquee_but its enough to be able to help me out :P anyways im out22:42
marquee_l8erz thanks again22:42
cherHi. Networking question. Although sudo /sbin/ifconfig shows that I have an eth0 up and running, sudo /sbin/ifdown eth0 says "interface not configured". What do I have to do instead?23:07
BarkingFishcher, do you have an entry in /etc/network/interfaces for eth0?23:08
BarkingFishifup and ifdown only work if I remember correctly, if there is an entry for them in there.23:09
BarkingFishit would look something like     auto eth0 inet   or similar23:09
cherAh found it. ifconfig eth0 down.23:10
cherHrmpf23:10
cherAlthough route shows wlan0 as route, routing no longer works after ifconfig eth0 down.23:11
