newbis there an idiots guide for ufw?12:09
Brutus-ufw?12:10
newbthe firewall in ubuntu12:11
M0hinewb: search in Ubuntu forums12:14
newbhow do I uninstall winmx? I get an error (no such file or directory) error12:14
newbthere was an error launching the application12:15
Brutus-newb, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UFW12:15
M0hinewb: In the last process, you have removed /.wine right, so you have to install wine 1.0.    sudo apt-get install wine1.012:16
newbbut in the ubuntu software center says it's still installed12:17
newb1.2.2-0ubuntu6 (wine1.2)12:19
newbI went there brutus I still don't understand it12:23
newbbefore coming on here12:23
essdyHi ppl can anyone help me with flash disk partition ? I can see both of my partition in ubuntu12:26
essdy(fat32, ntfs) but in win 7 only fat32 :/12:26
Brutus-newb, what are the problems with the ufw?12:31
newbI need to learn to configure it right12:32
newbwhen I install a win app when it askes me where to install it do I install it in C:\Program Files\appname.exe or do I have to install it in a wine directory?13:02
newbmeh guess I'll go back to being a windowsfag.. why doesn't linux have a easy to use gui firewall like windows?13:37
holsteinnewb: ?13:40
holsteinnewb: http://gufw.tuxfamily.org/13:42
newbI downloaded gufw to try to set rules for a firewall. I fcan't figure out what rules to add to it.13:42
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverguide/C/firewall.html13:42
holstein^^ that references quite a few options at the bottom13:43
holsteinnewb: you might have to give it a few days, or read some FAQ's13:43
holsteinchanging OS's can take some time13:43
holsteinfor me, i dont find the windows firewall easy13:43
holsteinits just what you and I are used to13:44
holsteinnewb: you could also try stepping back and state what you are trying to accomplish in the bigger picture13:44
newbI've never used iptable rules before13:44
holsteinnewb: ?13:45
holsteini didnt mean to imply you should have, or need to have used iptable rules13:45
newbI read you have to creat an allow whitelist13:45
newbcreate*13:45
holsteinim implying that since you have *not* used them, it might take a while for you to get accostomed to the change13:45
holsteinnewb: ive used shorewall13:45
holsteinand that GUI before13:46
newbok13:46
holsteinat home, i use the router13:46
newbI use a router too13:46
holsteinright, i use the firewall on the router13:46
holsteini dont put my server in the DMZ13:46
newbbuilt in firewall in it13:46
holsteinso, what are you trying to add to your machine and why?13:47
newbi don't know I read you should allow port 22 for ssh service whatever that is & port 80 for http & I guess you have to allow 443 for https13:49
holsteinnewb: to get out?13:49
holsteinyou should check first, and then mess with things as needed13:50
holsteinufw is quite easy13:50
holsteinlike https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverguide/C/firewall.html suggests13:50
newbidk doesn't default allows in and out13:50
holsteinbut, you should not need to allow anything to ssh into or out of your fresh install13:50
newbif you don't set rules13:50
holsteinnewb: im not following your question13:51
holsteinyour router is blockin *all* in13:51
holsteinassuming you have that configured properly13:51
holsteinthen, you can hop around locally no problem13:51
newbI read it allows all traffic by default13:51
holsteinnewb: right13:51
holsteinand thats the issue?13:51
holsteinsudo ufw enable13:51
holstein^^ that should enable ufw13:52
newbI did that13:52
holsteinthen, its as easy as sudo ufw allow 2213:52
holsteinnewb: thats all there is to it13:52
holsteinunless you are getting an error message13:52
holsteinthere are other options13:52
holsteinshorewall13:52
holsteinGUI frontends13:52
newbdo i've to allow port 22 ssh or is that for servers only? I'm using ubuntu as a desktop13:53
holsteinnewb: its for SSH13:53
holstein*if* you are running an ssh server on port 2213:54
holsteinand you want access to it13:54
newbI don't know what that does ssh?13:54
holsteinnewb: so you probably shouldnt mess with it then13:54
holsteinyou dont need to allow access to any port really13:54
newball I saw was samples so I thought I'd to allow13:54
newb it13:55
holsteinthe only reason to allow access to port 80 is *if* you run a web server on that machine13:55
holsteinto surf the net, you dont need to open a port13:55
holsteinnewb: those are common ports to open on a server13:56
newbI only need to open port for apps that I want to allow in & out13:56
holsteinweb, ssh, ftp13:56
holsteinnewb: no13:56
holsteinyou open ports to allow access *in*13:56
newbso for p2p I set the port the it uses13:56
holsteinyou dont need to open port 80 to allow your machine to browse the internet13:56
holsteinonly to serve a web server on port 8013:57
holsteinnewb: ?13:57
holsteinwhat p2p?13:57
holsteinit depends on the port, and if you are serving13:57
holsteinif this is on the internet, you'll need to add a rule to the router13:57
newbI install winmx earlier with wine and someone couldn't connect to me13:58
newbto download13:58
holsteinnewb: on the internet? or locally?13:58
holsteinlocally it *should* work out of the box13:58
holsteinover the internet, you'll need to work with the firewall on the router13:58
newbso it might have been their connection13:58
holsteinand now, you'll need to work with the router firewall, and the firewall on the machine13:59
holsteinnewb: ?13:59
holsteinit was probably them getting blocked by your routers firewall13:59
newbthe person that tried to download from me timed out13:59
holsteinright... the router's firewall will be ther first thing to block them14:00
newbthe winmx patch ahas the option to allow upnp and its enabled in my router14:00
holsteini dont use that14:00
holsteini disable upnp, and make a port forward14:00
holsteinif you are running that in wine, the upnp trigger could not be working14:01
newbhe was saying he was having problems connecting to people14:01
holsteinnewb: again, what are you trying to do? torrent?14:01
holsteinwe have torrent tools you might have better luck with natively14:01
newbnot yet14:01
holsteinnewb: not yet what?14:01
newbinstalling a torrent client14:02
holsteintransmission is the one i have use14:02
holsteini served some iso's for a project with it14:02
holsteinanyways... winmx should be using a port you can forward in your router14:03
holsteinor, you can try and see if someone else can connect14:03
holsteinor use a webserver, FTP, ssh or a service like dropbox, ubuntuone, or ownshare to get a file to your friend14:04
holsteini think skype and other services have file sharing14:04
holsteinsome VNC like services too like teamviewer14:05
newbI foundd it easier to let winxmx do the port forwarding auto instead of port forwarding.. I might have to do it on ubuntu tho manually port forward my ports14:05
holsteinnewb: sure... its also easier to create security problems which probably caused the windows breakage that brought you to linux14:05
holsteintransmission always worked with upnp for me in testing though14:07
newbI installed ubuntu to try out for the 2nd time.14:07
newbI tried on a pos 800mhz old pc and it was slow14:07
newbthe 1st time I used it14:07
holsteinsomething lighter would work... lubuntu or xubuntu14:08
holsteinor just a server without GUI14:08
newbxubuntu was what I tried the 1st time..I read it was better for older spec pcs14:10
holsteinit depends on the hardware support, and other variables14:12
Brutus-newb, xubuntu and lubuntu are desingned for old pc.14:20
newbso if ufw active it protecting my sysyem14:20
Brutus-you should choose one of them14:20
newbI;m not on the pos pc..I'm on my other pos newer pc amd athlon II dualcores14:22
newbhow come when I installed Winmx it creates a Winmx.lnk on my desktop? is it cos I created a winMX shortcut on my desktop?14:34
newbThe file '/home/username/Desktop/Winmx.lnk' is not marked as executable.  If this was downloaded or copied from an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run.  For more details, read about the executable bit.14:46
Snicksienewb, winmx is a program you installed via wine. It creates a .lnk file on your desktop (like it does on windows) so you can run it. I'm not sure if the .lnk-file has any use on ubuntu ;)14:55
newbyea I installed it using wine I've the normal winmx icon on my desktop & winmx.lnk file that looks like a a piece of paper like a txt file.. I dleted it the 1st I installed and winmx was still accessible from my desktop14:59
Snicksieyou don't need it, its just a shortcut :)15:00
