Stanley00yes! at last firefox get back to "normal" ;))00:00
min|dvir|usHi. I have reset all of my configuration (rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf blah blah). I am able to run unity --reset. However, when I run ccsm, I see the Unity launcher plugin is unchecked. I check it? Compiz quits.00:24
min|dvir|us(No title bars.)00:24
Stanley00min|dvir|us: did you try relogin after remove your configs?00:25
min|dvir|usYes.00:25
DaekdroomUnity isn't working here either00:26
min|dvir|usThis has been happening for a couple of days now.00:26
min|dvir|usIt really sucks.00:26
Stanley00min|dvir|us: sound strange00:26
min|dvir|usI'm using gnome-shell now, but whenever I try to switch back, desktop explodes.00:27
Stanley00min|dvir|us: idk, you can try adding new user, if it works, look in your config00:28
urlin2umin|dvir|us, Daekdroom  either one of you been tweaking compiz00:28
DaekdroomNope. It just won't work.00:28
Daekdroomunity --reset doesn't do anything00:29
min|dvir|usI reset all of my settings.00:29
DaekdroomI should try it again after upgrading packages, tho.00:29
urlin2uDaekdroom, isn't there a 2d choice not sure here.00:29
DaekdroomThere is a 2D choice. I've been using it.00:29
Stanley00min|dvir|us: can you tell me what exactly dir you have delete?00:30
urlin2ufor unity?00:30
DaekdroomYes.00:30
DaekdroomAlbeit similar, I can tell the diference easily.00:30
urlin2uDaekdroom, sounds like a graphics driver is needd00:30
DaekdroomNope.00:30
DaekdroomIt's a unity issue00:30
min|dvir|usStanley00: let me check.00:30
DaekdroomIt was working alright before some updates.00:30
min|dvir|usStanley00: `rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity`00:31
urlin2uDaekdroom, have you avoided the partial upgrade, not sure if ut is still there I just went to synaptic and ran the whole thing00:31
urlin2uit00:31
min|dvir|usAlso, I just tried to log in to my guest account, and I got a system problem.00:31
DaekdroomI'm pretty sure the whole unity stuff is installed.00:32
Stanley00min|dvir|us: as I though, need delete .compiz* too ;)00:32
min|dvir|usStanley00: can I do this without logging out?00:32
min|dvir|usI'll just run unity --reset.00:32
Stanley00min|dvir|us: I think you should log out00:32
Stanley00min|dvir|us: and delete .config too ;)00:33
min|dvir|usHell no.00:33
min|dvir|usI deleted those, and .compiz. I'm not deleting .config.00:33
min|dvir|usI can't believe you'd suggest that.00:34
Stanley00min|dvir|us: at least .config/compiz* ;)00:34
min|dvir|usOK, done.00:34
min|dvir|usI'll be right back.00:34
Stanley00min|dvir|us: good luck ;))00:35
min|dvir|usStanley00: did not help.00:42
elliottIs gnome-session-fallback really the recommended way of getting a typical GNOME shell? The panel looks ridiculous; much worse than the GNOME fallback in Natty.00:42
Stanley00min|dvir|us: hmm, bad luck...00:43
min|dvir|usStanley00: computing is never about luck.00:44
Stanley00min|dvir|us: did you run unity --replace, and unity --reset when deleting your config?00:45
TheBuntuinstalled gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme.. but its not showing up in gnome-tweak-tool... so i can use shell themes00:45
min|dvir|usI did not run unity --replace because according to --help, it is the same thing as just unity.00:45
min|dvir|usI did run unity --reset.00:46
jbichaelliott: bug 828392 set your theme to Adwaita00:46
ubottuLaunchpad bug 828392 in light-themes (Ubuntu) "light-themes don't display well in gnome-panel 3+" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/82839200:46
jbichaand of course, gnome-session-fallback isn't a "typical GNOME shell"00:46
elliottjbicha: Well, it's not just the look.00:47
elliottI'm using a dark theme.00:47
elliottAnd the system menu, for instance, is gone.00:47
min|dvir|usAnyone have any advice? I can't run the Ubuntu panels at all.00:47
elliottPlus the clock is in the middle of the panel for no apparent reason.00:47
jbichaelliott: you're welcome to move the clock, that is the new GNOME default to make it look more like GNOME Shell, same with removing System00:48
Stanley00min|dvir|us: one more trial and error, add a user, and check that if that new user can use unity nicely...00:48
min|dvir|usI already did. No success.00:48
min|dvir|usIt's definitely a software issue.00:48
min|dvir|usSegmentation fault, every time.00:49
elliottjbicha: Well, okay. But still: the background of the panel is a solid colour rather than a gradient for some reason. That surely can't be intentional, as it just makes the panel look discontinuous and weird.00:49
elliott(And I'm definitely using a dark theme, the default.)00:49
elliottjbicha: And I certainly would change it, but right-clicking the panel doesn't give Preferences, and right-clicking elements don't give Move.00:50
elliottThey just have the other menu items.00:50
jbichaelliott: you have to hold down Alt while right-clicking00:50
Stanley00min|dvir|us: then you have a big problem, sorry, I cant help you out this case, it's out of my ability00:51
elliottHow silly. :/00:51
min|dvir|usAnyone want to help me with my big problem?00:51
min|dvir|usUnity does not work at all.00:51
elliottStill, I don't understand why the panel background has been changed to look so silly.00:51
min|dvir|usSandy Bridge, using onboard graphics.00:51
urlin2umin|dvir|us, have you tried the 2d?00:51
min|dvir|usYes, works just fine.00:52
urlin2usandyt bridge look on the web is your best choice U think as well00:52
urlin2uu=I00:52
jbichaelliott: actually, setting the background to Solid Colour has a nice effect00:54
elliottyou mean it makes all the text unreadable against the background? :P00:54
jbichaelliott: text is readable here, what background do you use?01:02
elliottThe default.01:02
elliottI guess I'll just have to downgrade if I can't get the panel working sanely...01:02
ModalSurrealistI am having a problem with my computer not recognizing the hdmi output being connected01:04
ModalSurrealistwhen I had the default nvidia driver it showed an option for the hdmi device but was not actually displaying... and hten after installing the nvidia drivers it has gone away entirely01:05
elliottSo, there is no known way to fix the background of gnome-panel in oneiric?01:09
urlin2uelliott, your using a development and you want to download?01:10
urlin2udowngrade01:11
jbichaelliott: try Solid Color, set the style slider all the way to Opaque and use the eyedropper to pick the same color as the window borders01:11
elliotturlin2u: I guess I'm not cut out for the betas. :p But I doubt this will be fixed, since Canonical doesn't seem to care about the Gnome desktop any more, seeing as it's being removed... jbicha: Well, the solid colour that it is now is close to that, it's just that every /element/ of the panel has the expected gradient behind it, so the fact that the gradient is discontinuous and only shows behind the panel elements is really jarring and ugly.01:12
jbichait's not true that Canonical and Ubuntu devs don't care about the GNOME desktop01:14
jbichathere are very few devs working on gnome-panel though, gnome-shell is nice if you're in to that sort of thing01:14
elliottI guess I'm just annoyed that it's becoming harder and harder to get a desktop I can use each release... sorry. I don't care much for Gnome Shell, I'm afraid01:16
Stanley00elliott: you want a gnome2 desktop as before?01:17
elliottStanley00: I'm fine with gnome3 as long as it has the traditional panels around it.01:17
urlin2uarch has a fork, cetos, debian still have it01:17
urlin2ucentos01:18
elliottI know. I'll probably just switch to Xubuntu if all else fails...01:18
Stanley00elliott: gnome3 has a ppa for ubuntu, I think, and you can use a alternate CD to install just what you want ;001:18
elliottI have gnome-panel installed right now, I'm just having problems with it...01:18
min|dvir|usHey, guys. I think I've discovered my problem.01:19
min|dvir|ushttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/85228001:19
ubottuUbuntu bug 852280 in unity (Ubuntu) "error in geis_init Screen geometry changed: Monitor 0(primary) 0x0x1366x768 unity-panel-service: no process found Segmentation fault" [Undecided,Confirmed]01:19
min|dvir|usI'd just like to know if there is anything I can do to mitigate this bug's effects.01:20
ModalSurrealistFollow up: On my nvidia card, if I enable one of the nvidia drivers then it does not recognize the hdmi output (even after installing nvidia-settings and nvtv)01:27
ModalSurrealistHowever, if I use Ubuntu's default driver... it SEES the TV but it does not actually display a picture on the TV01:28
OerHeksmin|dvir|us, did you confirm this bug on launchpad ?01:28
ModalSurrealistCan someone please guide me as to the next thing to troubleshoot it?01:28
min|dvir|usOerHeks: I did not, but I did vouch for it.01:28
OerHeksmin|dvir|us, else you can do is reinstall ccsm & unity plugin01:28
min|dvir|usHow?01:29
min|dvir|usI already reinstalled CCSM.01:29
min|dvir|usI want to reinstall the plugin.01:29
OerHekshmm does that plugin come with ubuntu-tweak ?01:33
sianhulohow i enable an screensaver?01:34
OerHekssianhulo, good question, i find no screensaver nor settings, only energy settings. i guess you have to install them manually ?01:38
alex_mayorgasianhulo: click the gear at the top right, settings, screen perhaps?01:38
sianhuloalex_mayorga, i don't have any gear at the top right01:39
sianhuloi'm on screen and onlys hows screen time out and block time01:41
sianhuloshows*01:41
bandit5432any one know any-thing about change nautilus icons??02:03
lenI installed Kubuntu Oneiric on an Acer 0722 netbook (new revision with new C-60 cpu and newer radeon), and the touchpad doesn't work at all.  I checked the Xorg log and it showed it recognized a synaptics touchpad and loaded the drivers, so I'm not sure why it's not working.  Any ideas?02:05
bandit5432does it have a way to disable it with a switch?02:05
bandit5432or key?02:05
lenI'm not sure, but it worked in Windows 7.02:06
bandit5432ok have  you run  kde-config-touchpad02:07
lenI went into the touchpad configuration settings.  That's for fine tuning the touchpads behavior though.  This pad is getting zero response to any kind of taps or movements.02:08
bandit5432i am looking there was a bug with this problem02:09
bandit5432does the mouse work on the login screen?02:09
lenI don't think so, but I'll log out and see.  I have a mouse plugged in, and it works for everthing, just fine--the keypad works for nothing that I know of.   I'll log out and see though.02:11
lenNope.  Restarted X-server from login screen too, and nothing.  Will reboot and test from login.02:14
TheBuntuin gnome shell i can see the normal gnome 2.x.x panel showing thru the shell panel02:16
lenDoesn't work after a reboot either.  I wonder of all Acer 0722 netbooks are effected, or just the ones shipping in the last month or two with updated hardware.  The label on the units themselves even still say C-50  processor, but the latest shipping ones, indeed come with newer hardware (C-60, newer radeon version, and maybe updated mb chipset too since video is onboard.02:18
bandit5432hmm i wonder if having a mouse pluged in disables the touchpad02:19
bandit5432have you tried it with the mouse unplugged?02:19
lenYes.  The only reason I plugged in the mouse is because the touchpad wasn't working.  :)02:24
bandit5432also have you shutdown this computer and tried?  see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Touchpad_Synaptics#Synaptics_Loses_Multitouch_Detection_After_Rebooting_From_Windows02:24
bandit5432i am at a lose did it work ok in the live system?02:25
bandit5432loss'02:25
lenI went right into install with out booting into the live desktop first.  I'll try booting off the live Flash to see if it works.  Have to change my bios back to boot for usb first though, so it will take me a few minutes.02:27
bandit5432wait02:28
bandit5432if this is a fresh install try deleting the .kde in ~02:29
syn-ackHey, I've got a question... Since upstream isn't doing it anymore, is Ubuntu going to add actual screensavers to the distro now or are we just gonna have to use something like xscreensaver?02:29
urlin2ub&jy4?<!dC02:30
bandit5432len, did you install the radeon drivers?02:33
lenNo, because I read that they would screw up suspend on this netbook.02:34
bandit5432hmm02:34
lenJust booted into live flash, and it's not working from there either.02:34
TheBuntuCant get gnome shell themes to look the way there supose to.. Because the gnome 2 style panel is showing thru the gnome shell panel02:35
bandit5432len let me look some where else02:36
lenK.  I wonder if this is a problem common to all buntu's or just Kubuntu02:36
bandit5432you dont happen to have a diffrent linux distro or gnome to try do you?02:37
bandit5432other are haveing issues with touchapds on gnome as well02:37
bandit5432see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/84085702:37
ubottuUbuntu bug 840857 in gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) "Touchpad no longer working on Oneiric on Dell N3010" [Undecided,Confirmed]02:37
lenWell, if this this had a dvd, it would be a lot easier to try a bunch of different CD's, but I only have the one flash drive.02:38
emhey syn-ack02:39
syn-ackem Hello.02:40
emhaven't i seen you in other channels?02:40
syn-ackI'm sure you have.02:40
emcool :)02:40
bandit5432len i understand02:40
syn-ackMan I wish I had more ROM space on my Phone so I could run UbuntuONE on it.02:41
bandit5432len have you tried asking over at #kubuntu ??02:45
lenHmm.  I just found a key to toggle touchpad on off.  It's <Fn><F7>, and now it is working!  I never turned it off in the first place though, and can't see how I could have hit that by accident, so maybe it is disabling it at start for some reason.  I'm going to reboot and see if it is still enabled at startup.02:45
bandit5432:) yay02:46
bandit5432any one have any suggetions on a room to ask for help in hacking the nautilus ui?02:48
lenHmm.  That only worked on the live CD.  When I booted back to the HD it wasn't working again.  Tried the toggle again, but didn't work + I don't know if it thinks it is on or off because there is no led to tell you which way it is supposed to be toggled.02:50
bandit5432some people said that when you open the touchpad options in kde thats when it stops working02:51
bandit5432have you talked to any one in #kubuntu ???02:51
bandit5432i see you are in that channel02:52
lenNo, I figured they wouldn't want oneiric talk in there02:52
bandit5432lets ask real quick and see what happens02:52
bandit5432there is a kubuntu+1 buts its invite only02:52
rwwit's not invite only, it redirects here, but you're already here and freenode has odd errors sometimes02:53
lenNot really in there, Quassel just auto logged me in 'cause I was there before.02:53
rwwwell, it is invite only. but it's also +f02:53
lenI did not know about K+102:53
bandit5432i see rww02:53
bandit5432wonder why i get an error when i try and join it02:54
bandit5432no matter02:54
bandit5432you think he will get more help here or in kubuntu?02:54
* rww sighs02:55
bandit5432:|02:55
rwwbandit5432: If you're not in #ubuntu+1 and do /join #kubuntu+1, you end up here.02:55
rwwThere is no separate channel population in #kubuntu+102:55
bandit5432i wondered about that02:55
=== histo_ is now known as histo
bandit5432but i didnt want to try it02:55
rwwIf you are in #ubuntu+1 and do /join #kubuntu+1, freenode gives a stupid error message, but it means "can't forward to a channel you're already in"02:56
bandit5432makes perfect sense02:56
bandit5432but some one should put that in the channel topic of kubuntu i would think02:56
bandit5432of course people never read the topic so nvm02:57
bandit5432is there a dedicated ubuntu or gnome hacking channel that any one knows about??02:57
TheBuntuAnyone able to tell me why gnome3 shell is runing on top of gnome 202:58
bandit5432i dont frequent irc enough these days02:58
lenI logged back into Windows so I could tell for sure what state the touchpad was in.  Logged out and back into Kubuntu, and now it is working.   It seems like the synaptics driver is working fine, but something funny is going on the changing the enabled/disabled state.02:58
bandit5432TheBuntu, are you runnin gnome 2 themes on gnome 3?02:58
bandit5432len kde is having issues with touchpads it looks like they have been for a while now from reading forum posts02:59
lenAt least it is good to know that driver itself works.02:59
bandit5432yes03:00
TheBuntubandit5432: installed kubuntu 11.10... then installed ubuntu-desktop.... then gnome shell... installed gnome shell themes.. and i see gnome 2 panel behind gnome shell panel03:01
bandit5432len,  i would still ask in the kbuntu channel and see what they say03:01
bandit5432TheBuntu, when you login what desktop do you choose?03:02
TheBuntugnome03:02
jbichaTheBuntu: what graphics driver are you using?03:02
TheBuntui have uninstalled unity... gnome panel for gnome 2... metacity...03:03
TheBuntubandit5432: nvidia 28003:03
lenNow I just need to figure out why the wired networking is flacky and unreliable.  This is the first computer, out of a couple dozen or so, that I've ever had any issues with a wired nic in any linux.  Usually it's the wireless that is the problem.  The really strange part is the the wired nic is Atheros in this system and the wireless is broadcom.  I've never seen Atheros wired before, and if it is you'd thing the system would have wireless03:03
lenAtheros too.03:03
TheBuntueven have right click on the desktop and gnome3 dont have right click03:05
jbichaTheBuntu: GNOME 3 does have right click, can you post a screenshot?03:05
bandit5432i think jbicha can help you more than me TheBuntu03:05
lenI supposed most people don't use netbooks wired too often.03:05
bandit5432len, i use wired when ever i can so if i use my laptop even i use it wired03:06
bandit5432the cards i have been seeing in netbooks and laptops lately have been really weird like that03:06
lenI always feel better wired too, but in this case, something is goofy with the wired,  and the wireless works better.   I'm thinking maybe there is some kind of confict going on with the wired and wireless drivers.03:07
bandit5432look at you logs and see what they say03:07
bandit5432i dont have any clue on how to do that with kde though03:08
bandit5432looks like you would use KSystemLog03:08
lenthe wired driver to giving off error messages.  I'm going to look into it.  Just seems strange to have wired driver problems.03:09
TheBuntubandit5432: http://i.imgur.com/pAOBh.jpg     if you look at panel you can see gnome2 menel behind gnome shel panel03:09
bandit5432TheBuntu,  looks like you have nautilus running in the background03:10
bjsniderthere's nothing unusual in that screenshot03:10
bjsniderthat is indeed nautilus running in the bg03:11
TheBuntuhow do i get it out of the background03:11
bandit5432killall nautilus?03:11
bjsnideri will respawn03:11
bandit5432ok whats causing it then ?03:11
bjsniderthat happens because you have nautilus handling the desktop in gnome-tweak-tool03:12
bandit5432you reading this TheBuntu ?03:12
bjsniderswitch that off and nautilus will not appear like that03:12
TheBuntuthat fixed it....03:13
bandit5432good call bjsnider and ty03:13
jbichaTheBuntu: but by default the GNOME Shell top bar isn't supposed to be transparent03:13
hasenjust upgraded to 11.10, my laptop has an ati video card, and doesn't boot properly03:13
bjsniderhe's obviously themed gnome-shell to some degree03:13
hasenit boots when i choose recovery mode, but no 3d03:13
TheBuntui know... i install gnome shell themes03:14
hasenI'm on the open source driver03:14
bandit5432hasen have you installed the proprietory drivers?03:15
hasenbandit5432, no i haven't03:15
hasenshould i?03:15
TheBuntujbicha: my GNOME Shell is useing Malys-blackglass theme03:15
hasenI've always done fine without them03:15
bandit5432well you have to have accelerated drivers for unity i believe03:16
hasenIt worked with 11.0403:16
bandit5432try installing the drivers and see if it works03:17
hasenok03:17
hasenI'm kinda worried about them messing the system03:17
hasenbut I dont know if it can get any messier :P03:18
bandit5432that should not mess the system up03:18
bandit5432click on the dash button and choose more apps03:19
haseninstalling now ..03:19
bandit5432you are fast03:19
hasenI'm talking from a mac here ..03:19
hasenwell not really that fast ..03:19
hasenI already knew i have this option03:20
bandit5432you like the new unity features?03:20
hasenbut I don't know, I was worried03:20
hasenoh I love unity03:20
hasenhm, that may have sounded sarcastic .. (it's not)03:20
bandit5432from what i have used of osx i would think most mac users would like unity03:20
hasenI bought this mac after unity ;)03:21
hasenand yea, I think unity is better than mac03:21
hasenwell, the desktop part anyway03:21
bandit5432i have not used osx enough to much time doing other things03:22
bandit5432hmmi updated my drivers as well and my vm install is running better03:22
haseninstallation done, booted fine now :D03:23
bandit5432good03:23
bandit5432looks better with the drivers for me any way03:23
hasenhmm, no shadows ..03:24
bandit5432uhoh03:24
hasenhow can I stop the launcher from hiding?03:24
bandit5432did you switch to the regular unity at login?03:24
hasenyea03:25
hasenit doesn't believe i have 3d? :/03:25
hasenhm, and hd video flickers in vlc03:26
bandit5432let me login to regular unity03:26
hasenare you on a radeon card as well?03:26
bandit5432no i am in a vm03:27
hasenok03:27
bandit5432for the unity launcher look at http://askubuntu.com/questions/29553/how-can-i-configure-unity scroll down to the 11.10 part03:30
bandit5432when you login are you getting an error about 3d?03:30
hasenhm, i don't think so03:31
bandit5432if you are not getting an error and you choose unity at login then you should be good to go03:32
hasenthat's what I did ..03:32
haseni uninstalled fglrx (sp?) using instructions from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver#Problem:%20%20Need%20to%20fully%20remove%20-fglrx%20and%20reinstall%20-ati%20from%20scratch03:32
hasenand now got the same problem again ..03:32
hasenguess I have to install it again :/03:33
hasenI should install gnome-shell too03:33
bandit5432i would reinstall the ati drivers yes03:33
bandit5432i would only install gnome-shell if you want to try it or dont like unity03:34
hasenwell ..03:35
hasenwhy?03:35
* Stanley00 dont know why so many people doesnt like unity... :(03:35
hasenit also serves for comparison03:35
bandit5432well yes thats true03:35
bandit5432Stanley00, i just have not used it and am used to the work flow of gnome 203:36
Stanley00bandit5432: gnome 2 is not supported anymore, isnt it?03:38
bandit5432some features are not that is correct03:38
bandit5432but it currently works ok with 11.0403:38
rwwStanley00: no, it isn't03:39
bandit5432and i am looking into swtiching to gnome 3 using fallback mode03:39
hasenok, gnome-shell does say that 3d failed to load (no i haven't reinstall proprietry yet)03:39
bandit5432you need to install the ati drivers03:39
Stanley00bandit5432: gnome3 doesnt look like gnome2 either, everything changed ;)03:39
bandit5432no it doesnt look exactly the same but it looks more like gnome 2 then unity or gnome-shell03:40
bandit5432i am really interested in using unity on my tablet i think for that purpose i will like it03:42
TheBuntuanytime i open nautilus it opens plus opens in the background... i close it then i have to do the killall nautilus... is there away to stop that03:44
hasenok, now gnome-shell works fine (3d) but unity still has no shadows ... and feels like unity-2d03:45
Stanley00TheBuntu: I dont think that's a good idea... nautilus need run in background in case you plug in some USB drive, or some kind of that03:46
TheBuntuStanley00: i i open it... it opens and i close it.. you see the menu behind my gnome shell top panel...03:48
bandit5432hasen i dont have a clue about the shadows i dont see where there should be shadows03:48
bandit5432open a app and then open the dash and see what that looks like03:48
TheBuntuibut in gnome tweak tool i just truned off let file manager handle desktop and that fixed it03:49
Stanley00TheBuntu: ah, that the menu of unity, some kind of global menu, never mind that03:49
TheBuntuStanley00: i uninstalled unity03:49
hasenok, the dash background is blurred .. but it's a static blur03:50
Stanley00TheBuntu: hmm, I dont have exp with gnome-shell, just use unity, then sorry :(03:50
TheBuntuallready fixed it so it dont matter03:50
hasenThe unity settings don't seem to be respected: the launcher is set to never hides, but it auto-hides03:52
hasenseems like I'm running unity-2d03:52
bandit5432i had that problem with cssm a logout and logback in seemed to fix it03:52
Stanley00hasen: you can check via drag an icon out of launcher...03:53
bandit5432ok that helps ty Stanley0003:53
hasenI type 'unity' to a command line and it crashed .. :P03:54
hasenlost the window decoration03:54
hasenhow do I get it back?03:54
hasencompiz doesn't run03:54
Stanley00hasen: try press ctrl + alt + del to log out03:54
hasengtk-window-decorator isn't doing anything03:54
hasenok, i was hoping there's a way to bring it back without logging out ..03:55
Stanley00hasen: then type Ctrl +  Alt + F1 or so, then rerun unity ;)03:55
hasenthat's how it crashed ..03:56
hasen(i typed it into a terminal window)03:56
hasenanyway I'm rebooting now03:56
Stanley00hasen: that's a good choice ;)03:56
hasenhm, can't move icons outside launcher03:57
bandit5432looks like the always show the unity launcher does not work if you run anyhting maximized03:57
hasenno my unity is falling back to unity-2d03:57
hasenI don't get it03:58
hasenwhen I ran it from a live usb, it worked fine03:58
bandit5432you cant move the icons form the launcher03:58
hasenyes and the workspace switcher is 2d-esque03:59
bandit5432i dont see much diffrence between unity 3d and 2d maybe mine is not working either03:59
sgerbinohey all, does anyone know if eclipse indigo will make it in 11.10?04:00
hasenoooooh04:00
hasenwait04:00
hasenwhen I typed unity into the terminal04:00
micahgsgerbino: someone is working on it, but it might not happen04:00
hasenit fails because plugin 'text' is not loaded ..04:00
sgerbinomicahg: thanks for the info04:01
hasencompiz (core) - Error: Plugin 'test' not loaded.04:01
hasen^ text04:01
Stanley00sgerbino: but you can manually install it.04:02
sgerbinoStanley00: I did, I got it in /opt/eclipse running good now -- just was curious about having it in repo and unity integration possibly04:02
Stanley00sgerbino: it still galileo, as I know ;))04:03
bandit5432i dont have a clue hasen04:04
hasenenabled text plugin, now get 'GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object not supported'04:04
bandit5432is this a fresh install or and update?04:05
hasenupgrade04:05
bandit5432hmm some one else is going to have to help you on this one04:06
bandit5432i am out of ideas04:06
hasenno worries04:06
hasenmaybe now I will install fglrx again04:06
hasen(i have the other ati driver now :P)04:07
bandit5432which are the ati ones?04:07
hasenthere's 204:07
hasenone for 2d04:07
hasenone for 3d04:07
hasenhmm04:07
hasenjokey thinks fglrx is installed ..04:07
bandit5432you need the drivers from ati which are the fglrx ones i believe04:08
bandit5432hasen could you open a terminal and run glxgears?04:11
hasenglxgears works fine04:12
escottbandit5432, glxgears is not a good way to test04:12
escottuse glxinfo instead04:12
escottvirtually any processor these days can run glxgears above your refresh rate04:13
bandit5432oh i thought it would give an error if 3d accelration was not working04:13
bandit5432and for me it does at the start same error as glxgears OpenGL Warning: Failed to connect to host. Make sure 3D acceleration is enabled for this VM.04:14
bandit5432hasen you dont get an error about no 3d acceleration?04:16
hasenbandit: no, and gnome-shell works fine04:16
bandit5432so then i would say that unity was working fine as well04:17
hasenno04:17
hasenwhen i run it from a terminal I do get an error04:18
hasen(I posted it above)04:18
hasengl_arb_vertex_buffer not supported04:18
hasengoogle shows that the proprietry driver sucks04:20
hasensomeone got that error with it on 11.0404:21
bandit5432what card are you using?04:22
hasensome radeon04:22
hasensystem76 laptop04:23
urlin2uhasen, you can get sytem76 support on the Ubuntu forums as well from them directly, if needed.04:24
hasenhehe, I don't know .. I'm installing a beta version of ubuntu04:24
bandit5432hasen try changing the settings in the ati control center04:24
bandit5432sudo amdcccle04:24
hasenhmm, ok i'll try that04:25
hasendidn't know about that command04:25
hasenthanks04:25
bandit5432and what does the out put of fglrxinfo show?04:26
hasenhold on, it's uninstalled right now04:26
bandit5432grumbles04:27
bandit5432:P04:27
bandit5432and yes i know no emots in the chat04:27
hasenwhat? there's a rule for that?04:28
bandit5432i need to find answers to my issues04:28
bandit5432hasen,  in most of these chaneels there is i assume there is in this one04:28
hasenwhat were they?04:28
bandit5432maybe they changed it or i am thinking of a diffrent channel04:31
bandit5432any way did you get the drivers installed?04:31
bandit5432hasen,  you get the drivers installed?04:35
hasenyea04:35
hasenamdcccle did nothing useful04:35
bandit5432did you restart after you installed the drivers?04:36
hasenyea of course04:36
hasenATI mobitility radeon hd 4500 series04:36
bandit5432then unity is working now?04:36
hasennope04:37
bandit5432whats the error?04:38
hasensame04:38
hasengl_arb_vertex_buffer_object not supported04:38
hasenmust some package missing or something ..04:40
hasenbecause the live usb works fine04:40
hasenor maybe I have a package that's conflicting?04:40
hasenor some legacy setting that's interfering ...04:40
bandit5432i would follow the instructions here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver#Problem:__Need_to_fully_remove_-fglrx_and_reinstall_-ati_from_scratch04:41
bandit5432follow them all04:41
hasen:)04:43
hasenI did04:43
hasenI posted this link somewhere above04:43
hasenit goes back to the original problem:04:43
hasenboot fails with garbles screen04:43
bandit5432even after you reinstall all of the listed debs?04:44
hasenlisted debs?04:44
bandit5432sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core04:44
haseni put all these commands in a file and run it from the terminal04:45
hasenyea04:45
hasenyou meant packages, hehe04:45
bandit5432well packages = debs04:45
hasenI suppose04:45
hasenI thought you meant some specific .deb files04:45
bandit5432i would just copy and paste each command one at a time04:45
hasenas in, you know .. links to deb files to download04:45
hasenwhat? why?04:46
hasenthat's a waste of time04:46
bandit5432then finaly run the last one sudo apt-get install fglrx-modaliases04:46
hasenhm, I doubht that one is needed04:46
bandit5432it is if you want the drivers to work04:46
bandit5432as the instructions say04:47
bandit5432If you want desktop effects (compiz or KDE) you'll need the glx module loaded. This will not work even after purging fglrx since a hanging libglx.so file is left around. Both fglrx and xserver-xorg-core provide this file so to replace it with the correct version you'll need to reinstall xserver-xorg-core as well.04:47
hasenthat's the wrong paragraph04:47
bandit5432oh it is04:47
hasenthat fglrx-modaliases is for when you want to be able to reinstall fglrx04:47
bandit5432fglrx are the ati drivers you need!!!04:48
hasenfglrx sucks04:49
bandit5432then enjoy not having a working 3d unity04:49
hasenI already tried it04:49
bandit5432the whole point of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver#Problem:__Need_to_fully_remove_-fglrx_and_reinstall_-ati_from_scratch04:50
bandit5432is to purge the dirvers so you can install fglrx and get 3d accel to work04:50
hasenand that's what I did ..04:50
bandit5432see the post at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=174338004:50
bandit5432you just said you did not reinstall fglrx cause it sucks04:51
hasenno no I just said that ..04:51
hasenit sucks because it failed after I tried it04:52
hasenit failed from before too04:52
hasenthis guide is NOT for reinstalling fglrx04:52
hasenit's for getting rid of it04:52
bandit5432<hasen> that fglrx-modaliases is for when you want to be able to reinstall fglrx ... is what you wrote04:52
hasenand using the open source driver04:52
hasenum yea04:52
hasenwhat I mean is04:52
hasenI'm not just being stubborn and hating fglrx04:52
hasenit actually doesn't solve the problem04:52
bandit5432oh ok04:53
hasenit could just be a bug because it's still in beta04:53
hasenoh well04:53
bandit5432so have you retried running all of the commands from the page posted and then restarting and see if it works now04:53
hasenaha04:54
bandit5432incuding the last one sudo apt-get install fglrx-modaliases04:54
hasenno04:54
bandit5432do that and see if it works04:55
bandit5432i am going to take a bath and when i get back i hope its working04:57
bandit5432does any one know if you can add buttons to nautilus 3.x i see where you can hide some?05:09
hasenis there a place that logs what happens when booting? like if anything fails during boot?05:12
bandit5432yes05:13
bandit5432and i just realized i have not clue where it is in 11.1005:13
jbichabandit5432: no, you can't edit the Nautilus 3 buttons05:15
bandit5432its under dash>more apps>installed>logging05:15
bandit5432jbicha,  thank you i just found the bug post for it05:16
bandit5432seems that gnome has turned into apple :C05:16
bandit5432can any one confirm that the logging show logs?05:17
bandit5432log viewer that is'05:17
bandit5432nvm i see its not like the old one that showed some when you open it05:17
bandit5432hasen,  if you use log viewer you need to open the log file to be viewed05:18
hasenyea05:18
hasenwhich file though? :)05:18
bandit5432what are you looking for if its about the video driver open up Xorg.0.log05:19
hasenoh ok05:20
hasenpath?05:20
bandit5432should open up to the correct path if not its /var/log/05:21
bandit5432 /var/log/Xorg.0.log05:21
hasenok05:21
bandit5432i am sad now05:21
hasenaww05:22
hasenwhy?05:22
hasen:P05:22
bandit5432not with you i am tired of developers deciding just because they dont want something then every one else should not want it either05:23
hasenhmm, something weird05:26
hasenwhen i do that fglrx cleaning script05:27
hasenit says, while installing packages05:27
hasenthat x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf is broken05:27
bandit5432which line do you get that error on?05:31
famineif I have 11.10 alpha installed...is there an apt command to upgrade my entire system to the latest version?05:31
IdleOneapt-get update; apt-get upgrade05:33
bandit5432any one running elementary?05:33
rwwthe Ubuntu derivative?05:34
rwwif so, ask the #elementary channel, we don't support it here05:34
bandit5432i think its just a ppa adon05:35
bandit5432addon05:35
bandit5432cool i been asking for help with ubuntu for 2 days no response ask about elemetary and i get told where to go05:35
bandit5432thanks05:35
bandit5432hasen, what have you figured out?05:37
hasenreading this05:37
hasenhttps://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/Bumblebee/issues/8005:37
hasenfinal suggestion that worked for this guy was:05:37
hasensudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-dri05:37
hasenI'll try it05:37
hasenbandit5432, what was the thing you're asking about?05:39
bandit5432is cool jbicha found the answer for me05:40
bandit5432i wanted to know if there was a way to change the icon lay out of nuatulis05:40
bandit5432nautilus'05:41
bandit5432and there is not per the gnome devs say no and that not being able to change them is by design05:41
bandit5432hasen,  you notice that the command that you put in from the github is included in the commands that i wanted you to copy and paste into your tierminal from the ubuntu wiki??05:42
bandit5432terminal05:43
hasenwas it?05:43
bandit5432sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core05:43
hasenoh ok05:43
hasenhehe05:43
hasenI thought only the glx one was included05:43
hasendidn't check05:43
hasenanyway, it didn't work05:44
bandit5432did you get all the way to the end of the list of commands and restart?05:45
bandit5432should have been 7 commands05:45
haseni copy-pasted the entire thing05:46
hasendidn't type it manualy one by one ..05:46
bandit5432and then the last one05:46
bandit5432sudo apt-get install fglrx-modaliases05:47
hasenhmm no05:47
hasenhehe05:47
hasenbut I did run it05:47
hasenit didn't do anything05:47
hasenin fact it said package has no candidate05:47

bandit5432hasen,  i am a little frustrated that you wont rerun the commands from the page i posted05:53
bandit5432and that it seems from what you say that you dont have the fglrx drivers installed05:53
bandit5432well any way hope you get it working05:59

liarjbicha: because yesterday when i said it worked on the classic desktop i accidentally invoked gnome-settings-daemon as root. so the conclusion: gnome-settings-daemon invoked as root fixes the themes until i reboot (both on unity and the classic desktop) but if its executed without sudo it does not work07:25
jbichaliar: if you run something as root that shouldn't be, it could mess up your file permissions07:26
jbichaI haven't messed with gnome-settings-daemon much but you could also try sudo chown -R yourname:yourname ~/.gconf07:29
jbichaand sudo chown -R yourusername:yourusername ~/.config07:29
jbichabut I don't know whether that's your problem or not07:30

HyperJapan If I were to install Kubuntu 11.10 Beta 2 right now, when the final or another beta comes round, do I need to do a fresh install or update-manager -d, or can I just run normal updates to bring me to the latest release?09:53
binniHyperJapan: I asked this question earlier today, some guy said that if nothing brakes it's the same install.09:54

ikoniaTronic: what are you using to configure your network card14:24
Tronic/etc/network/interfaces. networking restart has the same effect (fixing the connection).14:25
ikoniaTronic: can you pastebin it please ?14:25
icerootTronic: is ip based communication also not working? or only FQDN-based?14:25
TronicI'm running a rather complex vlan + bridge setup but had no issues with on 11.04.14:25
ikoniaTronic: have you tried removing the entry from interface file and using the gnome-network-manager tool to configure it14:25
Tronichttp://pastebin.com/nq6H4ezL14:26
BluesKaji have odd flash problem ...flvs play ok on the desktop, but flash webcontent has no audio14:27
TronicThe post-up command also stopped working after upgrading to 11.10. Now I have to setup NAT manually every time networking is restarted.14:27
ikoniaTronic: which interface is not coming up14:27
ikoniaBluesKaj: someone had an issue with an kde update yesterday, they purged the flash package and re-install and it worked, something had been overwritten in the kde update, is that possibly the same issue you are seeing14:28
Tronicikonia: All interfaces come up as they should, and communications work for about 24 hours. After that all interfaces still are up but I won't get ping/tracepath responses from anywhere.14:28
ikoniaTronic: do the interfaces still have ip addresses ?14:28
Tronic*anywhere on the internet (interface br200)14:29
TronicHaven't checked the routing table in this faulty state yet, I guess that would be the next thing to do once it breaks tomorrow.14:29
ikoniaI'd advise looking at a.) the cards do they all have interfaces still b.) the routing c.) the lease file on the dhcp server d.) the syslog on the client14:30
Tronicikonia: Yes, br200 still has the proper IP. After restarting networking it still has the same IP.14:30
ikoniaTronic: what about the virtual interfaces14:30
BluesKajikonia, I doubt it ...our internet was down yesterday for 14 hrs due to an accident  of some kind , so I didn'y get the update til today , and this web flash problem has been around since I installed a new m-audio sound card14:30
ikoniaBluesKaj: ah ha,14:30
ikoniaBluesKaj: I did say I was interested as to how you got on with that card, the Linux support used to be terrible, I'm wondering if this is still the issue with those cards14:31
Tronicikonia: No IPs on them.14:31
ikoniaTronic: is that what you are exepecting ?14:32
ikoniaBluesKaj: this is a poor test, but if you remove the card, does it come to life ?14:32
TronicYes, communication happens via br200.14:32
ikoniaTronic: so routing table and the syslog are your friends when it fails next time14:33
TronicA wild guess is that STP on br102 is doing something funny because I have a couple of routers there.14:34
BluesKajI love the sound quality . The card works well with drafon player (guess it uses phonon directly like amarok) , but vlc has to be used for didgital passthru for movir audio tracks like DD and DTS ...overall it works quite well if use file associations for different players , buty it would be nice if VLC could play everything14:34
BluesKajscuse the spelling errors :)14:35
Tronic... but br102 and br100 stay functional, haven't had issues with them. Too bad that I didn't figure out to check the routing table previously.14:35
TronicNothing interesting on syslog.14:35
BluesKajikonia, does what come to life ?  I've set the card driver as default in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf as per some tutorials I found ...the only problem i have is web flash audio14:56
ikoniaBluesKaj: sorry, I meant if you remove the card does the problem go away when played through the default sound device14:57
BluesKajyes , ikonia , but I bought this card for sound qulaity which the onboard lacks in spades15:00
ikoniaBluesKaj: totally get that, I was just wondering the card was actually the issue with flash.15:02
bjsniderif you open the sound menu and check the applications tab when flash is playing something does it show that flash is playing audio?15:02
BluesKajikonia, oddly enough it plays flv files ok on the desktop with dragonplayer15:04
ikoniaBluesKaj: so it,s just flash or through vlc15:04
BluesKajikonia, it's just flash web audio content that I can't find a work around15:06
ikoniaBluesKaj: I wonder what the difference is in flash calling the sound card15:06
bjsniderBluesKaj, see question above15:07
BluesKajif i "wget" downloadable flv files the audio is fine when played back with dragonplayer, bjsnider15:08
BluesKajbjsnider, sound menu ?15:09
BluesKajbjsnider, i have youtube running a video , the page source/media tab," type" shows no audio just "images, icons  and backgorund""15:15
BluesKajwell, I'm gonna purge flash , and reinstall..doybt if it'll help ,but what the heck15:18
bjsniderBluesKaj, you should be able to bring up the sound menu using the volume control button15:40
bjsnideri am assuming you're using kde15:40
bjsniderit may look something like this: http://media.photobucket.com/image/kde%20sound%20menu/imageuser/PulseAudio_-_Volume_Control.jpg15:43
bjsnideralthough i am not a kde user15:43
bjsniderjbicha, you're using gnome-shell right?15:46

oskar-hi, i have upgraded to oneiric. how can i reset the style of the window decorations?17:49
Lasers_oskar-: Could you please paste the results of this command 'tasksel --list-tasks' ?17:52
bjsniderjbicha, i guess that's the only issue that matters, but i don't use unity. since there's a plugin for it that's separate from the notification plugin, i'd say it works17:52

jbichahasenj: look at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati then but if you want to report a bug ubuntu-bug will add the extra data to your bug report18:33

Saammbandit5432, hi, this is a different bug...After minimizing a window, I cannot restore it on desktop by clicking on its icon on unity launcher18:44
Saammbandit5432, the only way is to kill it and relaunch18:44
bbyaSaamm, I have the same problem.18:44
IdleOnetry alt-tab and see if that restores the window18:45
ThomasBerendsHi, how can I get Gnome 2 (classic desktop) @ Oneiric?18:45
IdleOne!notunity18:45
ubottuTo use GNOME Shell on Oneiric, install the "gnome-shell" package and investigate "gnome-tweak-tool". For GNOME Fallback mode, which is similar to GNOME 2, install "gnome-panel". Both packages will place a new entry in the Sessions dropdown on the login window.18:45
bbyaIdleOne, alt-tab restores the window... but every once in a while, the restored window doesn't respond to mouse clicks.18:46
ThomasBerendsIdleOne: Both aren't the original Gnome 2 :(18:46
IdleOneThomasBerends: correct.18:46
bandit5432ThomasBerends,  you can install gnome and use fallback mode18:46
IdleOnegnome2 is dead/dying.18:46
Saammbbya, yeah this is regression...everything was fine earlier18:46
bbyaSaamm, how do I check my unity version?18:46
bandit5432ThomasBerends,  fallback mode is as close as you will get unless you move to xcfe18:46
bbyaSaamm, I have unity 4.16.018:47
bandit5432ThomasBerends, also to change things on the gnome panels now you have to hold down the alt key and click18:48
bbyaSaamm, oh... I'll update and see if the problem persists18:48
bandit5432ThomasBerends,  see this link http://www.webupd8.org/2011/08/installing-using-classic-gnome-desktop.html18:48
ThomasBerendsbandit5432 Hmm. then I choose for Unity.. waiting for Elementary Luna ;p18:48

bandit5432ThomasBerends, dont know i installed the elementary ppa and tried marlin which i like just waiting right now18:52

bandit-awayThomasBerends,  i am only running it in a vm for now18:59
bandit-awayThomasBerends,  you probably already know how to install it but if not http://www.webupd8.org/2011/05/elementary-file-browser-marlin-is-now.html19:00

bbyaEarlier I tried grabbing the screenshot of the active window using Alt+Printscreen, and it grabbed some portion outside the window (the shadow part)... this is how it looked http://i.imgur.com/04Znx.png ...is there a fix for this?19:01
ThomasBerendsbandit-away: thanks, always handy (:19:01
hasenjum, in the bug reporting tool, it says: InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx"19:03
hasenjwhat is that all about?19:03
hasenjThat's just the OS that came by default with the machine19:04
charlie-tcaUsually means you originally installed 10.04 and upgraded19:04
hasenjhm, ok19:05
hasenjI'm upgrading from 11.04 though19:05
hasenjI hope this doesn't cause misunderstandings ..19:05
charlie-tcaIt won't19:08
charlie-tcaBug people and developers are very good at reading the reports, and the only way to Oneiric is upgrade from 11.04 or fresh installation19:08
TronicOkay, network disconnect happened again. Nothing strange with routes but the default gateway would not answer to ping.19:09
bbya*I meant fix for the screenshot bug, and not the upgrade stuff _in_ the screenshot... Unintended pun :P19:09
charlie-tcabbya: the shadow is part of the window19:10
bbyacharlie-tca, but it makes the screenshot look "ugly".19:10
charlie-tcasorry19:10
bbyacharlie-tca, this didn't happen in 10.0419:11
charlie-tcait is still part of the window, so a screenshot of the window will include the shadow19:12
charlie-tcaIt did not happen in 10.04 because the windows did not shadows19:12
ErickMorenoHi everyone19:14
bbyacharlie-tca, but it surely is not a feature, is it?19:14
