ScottSanbarHi, all.  Is there a way to change my default desktop from Gnome to Unity via the command line or an application available after login from the Gnome desktop?05:16
M0hiI dont think that you can shift without logging out. lemme search though05:18
zkriesseScottSanbar: There is a way you can shift it via the Login Menu options in your settings menu05:19
zkriesseSystem -> Settings -> Login Menu i think it is05:19
M0hiZach, aww I thought he wanted to shift the desktop :|. my bad05:20
M0hithat can be done in login menu05:20
ScottSanbarzkriesse, M0hi: Clicking on System->Administration->Login Settings gives a dialog box entirely grayed out except for a button called "unlock", which does nothing.  Could this be because I am not logged in on my console desktop?  I do not have a keyboard or mouse attached to the Ubuntu PC, hence the problem.05:24
zkriesseMost likely05:24
ScottSanbarBummer, I guess I'll have to move my keyboard/mouse over to my Ubuntu box whenever I want to switch and just do it at the login screen :(05:25
philipballewScottSanbar, whats the problem?05:25
zkriesseWell if you can unlock the login settings menu you can choose a default option there05:25

philipballewnice!05:26
ScottSanbarI have been running Ubuntu 11.04 since 9/11 without a keyboard or mouse, with only 1 reboot due to an upgrade.  I use TightVNC server and RealVNC.05:30
philipballewso your logging into it from windows?05:31
ScottSanbarYes.  I also use XMing/Putty for an initial ssh terminal window if I need to configure something to get the full Desktop working via VNC, or quick and dirty stuff or to individual windows for things like FireFox, etc. floating around on my Dual Screen Windows Machine outside the RealVNC Gnome Desktop window.05:32
philipballewyou should go to say a thrift store and a keybord will be cheep05:33
ScottSanbarI also set up XDMCP but XMing does not handle that very well, and you lose the desktop if you disconnect (like when I reboot my Windows PC) which is not the case with VNC.05:34
philipballewtry vnc through ssh05:36
ScottSanbarI do not have room for 2 keyboards anywhere.  I will get a KVM switch on ebay probably, if it becomes a problem, but so far it really has been no problem at all - I just haven't needed to hook up a keyboard or mouse at all and prefer to have my Windows and Ubuntu desktops all on the same 2 screens.05:36
ScottSanbarwhy?05:37
ScottSanbar(not a problem except for the Unity/Gnome switch, that is)05:38
ScottSanbarphilipballew: I am curious why you mention VNC through ssh - for security?05:40
philipballewyeah. exactly05:41
philipballewit is what everyone in #ubuntu-server tells me to do05:41
ScottSanbarOh, I am on my home network, which is behind 2 firewalls and no wireless, with no ports open to the outside.  Should I still be concerned?05:42
ScottSanbarI can answer my own question - there is a definite possibilyt someone could hack into my network, especially with my IPs exposed to potential hackers all over IRC now, so being careful is a good idea in all I do.  I will take your advice, philipballew, and set it up that way.  Thanks.05:44
philipballewactually ScottSanbar I hacked your network yesterday05:45
philipballew6 times05:45
philipballewjk05:45
ScottSanbarI really have no idea how hard it would be to hack my network - don't know much about that stuff.05:45
philipballewits do able if someone wants05:46
ScottSanbarWell, that's really nice to know :(05:46
ScottSanbarHow long would it usually take for a typical home network setup?05:47
philipballewhard to say. I did my parents in 30 minutes05:47
ScottSanbardid they have a hardware firewall?05:47
philipballewno they did not05:48
philipballewI want to install one of those.05:48
philipballewwhats a good way to05:48
ScottSanbarWell, I can give you a great link that will really help you if you want.  These are not being produced anymore and area real bargain05:49
philipballewgo for it05:49
ScottSanbarhttp://www.amazon.com/Cisco-Linksys-WRT320N-Dual-Band-Wireless-N-Gigabit/dp/tech-data/B001SEL32605:51
philipballewcould I make a desktop a firewall05:54
philipballewa really strong one05:54
ScottSanbarI am sorry, I do not know much about that - I would think you could use a desktop with a version of Linux specifically made to be a firewall.  I believe there is a Wikipedia page that has a list of all the various linux distros and could point you to those specifically made for firewalling.05:56
ScottSanbarI am pretty sure it would probably be a bad idea to use a standard version of multi-purpose Linux as a firewall, but not really certain or all that informed about that.05:57
philipballewme wither05:58
philipballew(either05:58
ScottSanbarYou would need to have 2 NICs or a NIC or motherboard with 2 ethernet ports, though.05:58
ScottSanbarebay might have decent routers, and if you did not need the wireless, you could get one for less than the link I posted.06:00
philipballewI have a router06:00
philipballewI put ddwrt on it06:00
ScottSanbaror less (or only 1) ethernet ports for the internal network06:01
ScottSanbarI looked it up - looks interesting - how well does it work?  http://grc.com06:04
philipballewwhats the link?06:07
philipballewddwrt is great!06:07
philipballewits new router firmware06:07
* ApOgEE vote OpenWRT06:08
ScottSanbarGibson Research Corporation - he is the guy who made SpinRite.  He is really into security now.  He has a link on there you can click on to get to a web page that will test your firewall for security.  Very helpful. Also, he has lots of informational stuff and just about everything you would ever want to knwo is there about internet security.06:09
ScottSanbarSteve Gibson - writes everthing in assembler still, even GuI and web stuff.06:09
* ScottSanbar is cooking a turkey burger06:13
zkriesse@ ScottSanbar I had a steamed Sweet Potato, half of a Acorn Squash, and some grilled Asparagus soaked in olive oil with garlic for dinner06:16

M0hiScottSanbar: you can call him with any name lol06:19
M0hiskriesse aka zkriesse :P06:19
ScottSanbarzkriesse:  actually, these turkey burgers are really yummy - preformed patties that come in vacuum sealed packs of two in a big carton of them dirt cheap from Wal-Mart.  I am sold!06:21
zkriesseScottSanbar: I know what they are06:21
zkriesseI've had them06:22
zkriesseI've lost weight though doing what I'm doing + it's HEALTHY06:22
zkriesseWas 185 now down to 173, 30lbs to go06:22
ScottSanbarzkriesse:  That is wonderful - congratulations!!!  I am actually dieting somewhat, and have lost 20-30 pounds, up and down, from 340 to 310 or so.06:23
ScottSanbar4 years ago my fighting weight was 230-240, and I do well with that when I am in shape, so I've got 80-90 pounds to go.06:24

ScottSanbarI have been using byobu.  When I first started using it, it worked fine.  Now, whenever I using it all the byobu sessions are the same screen - if I exit one, I exit them all, and any activity on one is reflected on all.  ?????21:54
ScottSanbarOK, after futzing with it I figured out how it works - that is the intended behaviour, I create a new byobu screen with F2, then can use all the terminal windows to see all the byobu screen windows with F3, F4, etc.22:24
ScottSanbarFor those who use TightVNC server for VNC access to Linux, here is the way to get the clipboard to work:  install autocutsel (sudo apt-get install autocutsel) then add the following line just before the line that starts your xsession or whateveer in ~/.vnc/xstartup:  "autocutsel&" - works like a charm!22:30
ScottSanbarDoes anyone here use XMing?22:32
ScottSanbaror PuTTY?22:32
Unit193I have done so, but not for a little bit22:33
ScottSanbarUnit193: I have had to stop using it because it screws up Windows.  I was wondering if anyone else had problems with it.22:33
ScottSanbarI just realized this was not an Ubuntu problem.  Sorry.22:35
Unit193For the record, I didn't really have major issues with it.22:36
ScottSanbarIt worked fine for a while, then started causing random slowdowns with key entry and mouse usage.  When I closed it, the problems went away.  Happened several times.  Worked fine for a long time, though.  Kind of weird.22:37
ScottSanbarI figured out byobu finally, and it is very nice to use.22:38
