[00:41] shayonj: Hey [00:41] * Cheesehead sent out an invitation e-mail for a 8:00 PM hangout [00:41] Cheesehead, how is everything going. btw, do we have a meeting now ? [00:42] oh right [00:42] cool [00:42] Meeting tomorrow night [00:42] yep [00:42] Pizza-and-beer tonight [00:42] * shayonj gears up [00:42] * Cheesehead puts on loud music [00:42] * shayonj will pretend he is 21+ [00:42] * Cheesehead turns on the disco ball [00:43] shayonj: Thanks for the reminder about the wiki page meeting date [00:43] anytime ;) [00:44] be back at 8 [00:46] * Cheesehead changes the music to techno and starts dancing like a robot from the '80s [00:54] * shayonj back with a old school pizza.. [01:01] anyone else joining us this evening? [01:02] shayonj: What's your goal for the LoCo? [01:05] Cheesehead, well, this will technically be my first week so on a personal goal i'd take it slow. But i really would like the LoCo an its members to reach techie and non-techie person situated in WI as much as it can. I personally dont go by numbers and i think its just the beginning for ubunut. We still need a lot of end-users and developers [01:05] LoCo and its members (including me) [01:05] person=people * [01:05] What do you, personally, want to get out of the LoCo experience...beyond virtual pizza? [01:07] some fun, meeting people, leanr more about Ubuntu, even if its working or how it is changing peoples life and at the end learn how to Ubunut (have a good time ;) ) [01:07] ubuntu * [01:07] * Cheesehead thinks you read the answers out of the back of the book [01:07] They're so well written... [01:08] well i only have pizza infront of me and a java book [01:08] :) [01:08] Er, by the way WELCOME to the WI LoCo [01:08] Cheesehead, er, thank you :) [01:08] We have fun [01:08] We say silly things [01:08] ...Java? [01:08] everybody does..me a lot though [01:09] shayonj: You'll fir right in here. [01:09] Cheesehead, yeah its my course book actually was studying a while back .. [01:09] s/fir/fit [01:09] Cheesehead, ;) [01:09] hello emeitner [01:09] Hi all. [01:09] hi emeitner [01:10] * Cheesehead steps out for a moment to tekk the kids to *go to sleep* [01:10] I'll introduce myself... [01:11] * shayonj looks into packaging for a while [01:11] emeitner, sure.. i am listening :) [01:11] I am the systems administrator for a natural foods cooperative in Madison. [01:12] emeitner: Welcome aboard the great LoCo adventure [01:12] emeitner, and i am a student studying in UWGB. [01:12] I'm Cheesehead, and I'm an alcoholic. [01:12] No, wait... [01:12] I'm not an alcoholic. [01:12] What am I? [01:12] We have around 65 Ubuntu 10.04 desktops in the organization. We use Debian servers on the back-end. LDAP/NFS setup so people can log in to any machine and get their stuff. [01:13] Cheesehead, alcoholic .. [01:13] Perhaps amnesiac [01:13] emeitner: Sounds like you really know your way around the systems1 [01:13] ! [01:13] * Cheesehead offers emeitner some virtual pizza [01:14] that cool emeitner [01:14] even i am trying to get some linux (ubuntu) servers installed on our campus [01:14] so far we got a one ubuuntu amongst the 10 pc and windows [01:14] not bad i guess :) [01:16] emeitner: So if you could make one change to Ubuntu, what would it be? [01:16] shayonj: Same question [01:17] Cheesehead, you know thats a pretty vast question.. but still let me think [01:17] 1 Change = stop putting so much time into bling and shiny stuff and focus on stability and the "enterprise". [01:18] emeitner: You mean the server end? [01:18] i wouldnt say so.. an org should attract all kind of users .. but at the same time balancing out stuff is important [01:18] Not that a natural foods Co-op is an enterprise... [01:18] No. Desktops. [01:19] Again, I use Debian servers because thats what I cut my teeth on. [01:19] emeitner: Could you amplify what you mean by 'enterprise'? I've seen the term used pretty loosely to mean a lot of things. So I'm curious... [01:20] (and a natural foods co-op is bigger than my mom & pop business, with one Mac and one PC) [01:22] Enterprise=B.S. Term to make people sound like they know what they are talking about. :) [01:22] * Cheesehead laughs [01:22] * Cheesehead takes another slice of virtual pizza [01:23] Is the LTS concept living up to it's promise? [01:23] Enterprise could also pertain so larger deployments of machines where standardization of the desktop machine, and the user experience is the norm. Also where there is a solid server infrastructure underpinning it. Hows that? My best guess. [01:25] shayonj: Great point about balancing [01:25] Cheesehead, thanks [01:25] Cheesehead, does our LoCo do any kind of initiatives or programs accross the state ? and do we good or adequate amount of funding for that ? [01:25] do we get good * [01:25] Well, there was a workshop in Rhinelander yesterday. [01:25] right [01:25] No funding. [01:25] i see [01:26] LTS? Yes. I find that some people triaging bugs do not always remember that LTS does not automatically get thrown the to ditch when the "next big thing" comes along. I am satisfied and will continue to stay with LTS releases. [01:26] I'm thinking of jumping off the 6-month release upgrade wagon when 12.04 rolls out. [01:27] Try newer stuff in a VM, perhaps. [01:27] But 6-month releases used to have huge improvements in X or printing (stuff I cared about), and all that is now done. [01:28] The last few have been fun changes, but more change than real improvement in the stuff I use. [01:28] i knew about that. but then never thought into too deep during that time.. [01:28] right [01:30] Funding might be possible someday, but nobody has stepped forward to create the infrastructure (like 503(c) cert and bank account, etc) [01:30] What's the point donating to a non-tax-exempt organization? [01:31] We also haven't identified what to spend funds on. [01:32] i see, well thats why i was saying if we got some initiatives like Ubuntu-Wisconsin-Culture type thing, we could probably have that [01:32] Myself, I want to have fun with theis LoCo, and perhaps help people. [01:32] Ubuntu-Wisconsin-Culture initiative? [01:33] * Cheesehead takes another slice of virtual pizza [01:33] hah [01:34] well just said.. idk, we can probably have like a day where people gather and meet other ubuntu fans f2f and do some stuff [01:34] well thats a lot to think about now i guess.. but having something like that someday will be pretty cool [01:34] like meeting on a thanksgiving [01:34] and celebrating Ubuntu-Wisconsin-thanksgiving [01:34] hah, i am just saying.. :) [01:34] We're on the way - we do Ubuntu Hours in both Milwaukee and Madison Monthly. [01:35] oh i see. nice [01:35] I'm trying to convince somebody to start one in the Appleton/GB/Rhinelander area [01:35] * shayonj is from GB [01:35] I'm als trying to start couple-times-a-week IRC hangout [01:35] what you planning for [01:35] i meant i live in GB [01:36] I'm in MKE, so I'll let you up-north people figure it out. [01:36] I can tell you that there are a bunch of you. [01:36] cool [01:37] I don't know about Thanksgiving. My family would be quite miffed if I skipped out on them for a while. [01:37] One advantag to Ubuntu Hours is that they are short and public and primarily social [01:37] So you can bring a friend or a spouse, and they can bring a book for just an hour [01:38] There is some interest in bug work, and I'm trying to kindle that into a working group [01:38] yeah, thanksgiving was just a bad example i guess [01:38] Since I always enjoy working bugs much more when not alone [01:38] Cheesehead, bug work ? [01:39] Triage or patching [01:39] * shayonj currently working on [needs-packaging] bug [01:39] i see [01:39] packaging, too. [01:39] What are you packaging now? [01:40] tornado [01:40] its a new request [01:40] bug number? [01:40] its 'python' [01:40] wait a sec i lost it [01:40] hah [01:41] bug 606231 [01:41] Launchpad bug 606231 in Ubuntu "[needs-packaging] Tornado" [Wishlist,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/606231 [01:42] I love it when the bot is listening... [01:42] yeah [01:42] at first i just pasted the number but then typed bug again.. :) [01:43] * shayonj offers some old school sausage and pepperoni pizza [01:43] So you package it, and send it to REVU? [01:44] Cheesehead, yep.. i hopefully will be applying for an ITP too, lets see [01:44] its a cdbs package [01:44] * Cheesehead takes the slice before emeitner can grab it [01:44] hah [01:44] and atm i am having a nice time with the debian\rules :P [01:45] shayonj: Enjoy... [01:45] emeitner, hah yeah [01:45] * Cheesehead offers to refill emeitner's beer as a consolation for taking the slice [01:46] btw, i was being sarcastic [01:46] * emeitner offers mug [01:47] * Cheesehead pours [01:47] * emeitner drinks :) [01:47] Any particular fun with the debian rules? [01:48] umm its the python [01:48] this is my first time with python [01:48] and [01:48] it build perfectly fine [01:49] but i know that its not building it fine, because i cant find the package after it installed [01:49] .deb package [01:50] it may be building but not installing it into the right place where the packaging tool expects things to be. [01:51] i cant find where it needs to be installed [01:53] * Cheesehead is looking at the wiki [01:53] tornado wiki ? [01:53] or ubuntu wiki ? [01:53] Tornado [01:53] http://wiki.debian.org/Python/Packaging [01:54] That may help. I have not packaged any Python apps yet so I am not sure. [01:55] emeitner, i am currently on that page :) [01:55] Cheesehead, ok [01:56] The key part is where is shows: python setup.py install --root=debian/python-foo [01:56] that is where one sets where debian/rules tells the installer where to install. [01:56] well i do havethat [01:56] but not sure of thing.. [01:57] okay wait, what is foo here --root=debian/python-foo ? version [01:57] ? [01:59] my rules [01:59] file [01:59] python setup.py build python setup.py install --root=debian/python-foo --install-layout=deb --install-lib=/usr/share/python-foo --install-scripts=/usr/share/python-foo [01:59] and the overrides [01:59] debian/python-foo is the path to where the installer will install it. replace "python-foo" with your package anme [01:59] yep gotcha [01:59] Should foo = packagename? [01:59] yep [01:59] * Cheesehead sees on the scrollback he was a few seconds late [02:00] Curses, foiled again... [02:00] Well, my hour is up. So back to work for me... [02:01] Thanks for a great hour, fellows. [02:01] See you again soon [02:01] ! [02:01] * Cheesehead goes out to clean the kitchen [02:01] have a nice one guys [02:01] Goodnight [02:02] emeitner, any other possible suggestions / [02:02] ? [02:03] No. I'd have to see what you got in the debian/ folder. [02:04] hopefully everything is normal..is there any specific one i should look into or you would like to knwo /.? [02:04] How did you create the debian/ folder? By hand or with a "debianizing" tool? [02:04] yep [02:04] dh-make [02:04] dh_make [02:06] What is the command you are using to build the package? [02:06] debuild [02:06] and then pbuilder on *.dsc [02:07] trying pdebuild now [02:09] didnt work [02:12] shayonj: sorry I couldn't be any help. I've gotta go. [02:12] emeitner, no problem.good night [02:12] * emeitner wipes beer from chin and departs [02:56] did I miss the virtual pizza and beer? [02:57] * shayonj got some leftovers :) [02:57] nice! [02:58] * shayonj passes some to bigbash [02:58] sorry bigbash i cant drink so passed some green tea ;) [02:59] no problem, too late for me to be drinking [03:00] :) [03:00] Cheesehead, just an FYI. I won't be able to make the meeting tomorrow night :( bar league VB game got pushed back [03:05] shayonj you said you are learning java? [03:05] bigbash, yep..taking course this semester [03:06] nice, know any good books for learning? [03:08] bigbash, this is a good one - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=0321200063/martyhallsrecomm/ [03:08] and java concepts 6th edition by cay horstman [03:09] I'll have to look at that [03:09] i've been meaning to learn Java [03:09] sure [03:10] i see. I am also still learning so cant recommend more. I can ask my professor.. will let you know soon. he mentioned a really good book once in the class. but i forgot [03:14] that'd be cool [03:15] will tell you on thursday. that is when my next class is [03:17] ok, I use ZNC so I always show i'm on here but I connect very often. I usually have IRC up at work [03:21] Well I'm headed to bed, work in the morning. night all === bigbash is now known as zz_bigbash [03:26] zz_bigbash, sounds good [13:45] oh, I have some scrollback to read [13:47] we have more packagers [13:47] ripps: are you around anymore? === zz_bigbash is now known as bigbash [18:05] * Cheesehead checks in [18:06] REMINDER: MEETING TONIGHT 8:00 CDT [18:06] You all remember what happened last time you didn't show up. [20:56] basically. [23:58] Anyone use fwknop to protect internet-facing servers? I might give it a try...
