carrfanehello, my name is hector, im new here00:46
carrfaneanybody there?00:47
caravanhello00:51
caravani would like to ask something00:52
caravanany1?00:52
phillwcaravan: do not ask to ask... please just ask. If one of us are about, we will answer. If not.. please use the topic :)00:53
anthropologistHey folks. I've got a nVidia GeForce 7300 that I am trying to use to set up a dual desktop under Lubuntu 11.04. If I install the 3rd party nVidia drivers, Lubuntu freezes on startup. Google has indicated to me that the current nVidia drivers don't work with the GeForce 7300, and that those cards are on a "blackout list". Is there a work-around, or should I try to dig up another video card?01:08
wxlwhy can't i find kernel module ide-scsi on this god-forsaken alternate cd? sigh. every which way i'm screwed!02:37
phillwwxl: that will be because it is not installed? scsi?...... oh dear me!03:03
wxlsupposedly modprobe ide-scsi should solve the problem03:03
wxlunfortunately it can't find the module03:04
wxlsiiiiiiiigh03:04
wxlis https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/oneiric/+source/lubuntu-meta the correct location for bug reporting?03:04
jmarsdenwxl: What makes you believe you need the ide-scsi module?  From memory, that module has not existed in Linux kernels for a few years now... or else I'm confusing it with something else...03:05
jmarsdenwxl: A quick Google suggests that using ide-scsi was deprecated as far back as 2004.  It is not there any more... why do you think you need it?03:08
wxljmarsden: i can't find anything current that's for sure03:26
wxljmarsden: but the fact is it can't detect the cd and it doesn't seem to be in the device tree03:27
jmarsden2.6 and 3.0 kernels do not use ide-scsi to detect optical drives.  Any info you find suggesting ide-scsi is from the old days of 2.4 kernels, as far as I know.03:28
wxlfine with me, so what do you suggest? :D03:28
jmarsdenTry a different optical drive, if you have another?03:28
wxlnope03:29
jmarsdenOr a different data cable?03:29
wxlthe drive works fine03:29
wxlobviously03:29
wxlit booted03:29
wxllooking at https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/installation-guide/powerpc/boot-troubleshooting.html i see no real relevant info in dmesg or syslog03:31
wxlin syslog there is cdrom-detect: Unmounting CD just to be sure03:31
wxlnothing else of relevance03:32
wxldev doesn't have anything-- hdc, sr0, sd*, cdrom, nothing03:32
wxlso manually mounting ain't going to help03:32
wxlfor that matter there's no /proc/ide03:32
wxlso checking dma won't help03:33
jmarsdenwxl: OK, so the drive you booted from is not being seen; sorry if that should have been obvious, I did not read all the earlier part of the conversation when I got to my PC.03:33
jmarsdenMaybe there is a PPC-specific driver module for IDE optical devices??03:33
wxlthat would be interesting03:33
wxlof course it might be here (it's not) https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCKnownIssues03:35
jmarsdenI'm not PPC-oriented enough to know... you could see if the folks in #debianppc can help, although they may decide not to help because you are not running Debian...03:35
jmarsdenwxl: Have you tried an Lubuntu 11.10 beta or daily PPC image, or only 11.04 ?03:37
wxlmy only choice is 11.1003:37
wxl(from what i can find)03:38
jmarsdenOK... you could see whether the same issue exists in http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/6.0.2.1/powerpc/iso-cd/debian-6.0.2.1-powerpc-CD-1.iso perhaps?03:39
wxlsigh03:40
jmarsdenKeeping older hardware alive takes work... if you don't enjoy it, buy a modern cheap PC and be done with it :)03:40
wxlwell i can tell you without a doubt the problemS i had with the ubiquity installer had NOTHINg to do with the hardware03:41
jmarsdenwxl: well, I can tell you without a doubt that most users of x86 PCs trying out Ubuntu do not start looking for ide-scsi ...03:42
* freedom07 loves getting the most out of old hardware03:42
wxlso let me run down the list of issues with the ubiquity installer:03:42
wxlabout 20 packages needed updating03:43
jmarsdenThat's a problem with ubiquity??03:43
jmarsdenHow come?03:43
wxlincluding python-gobject03:43
wxlhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/85666903:43
ubot5Ubuntu bug 856669 in pygobject (Ubuntu Oneiric) "pygobject 3.0.0-0svn1 does not work with custom python GTK widgets" [Critical,Fix released]03:43
jmarsdenpackages needing updating are an issue with the overall state of the Ubunut repositories, not with one particular installer, aren't they?03:43
jmarsden*Ubuntu03:44
wxland then to make matters worse (this being insurmountable) choose-mirror is messed up leaving for a default mirror fqdn of "mirror" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/75671903:44
ubot5Ubuntu bug 756719 in choose-mirror (Ubuntu Oneiric) "PowerPC Natty Beta LiveCD Hangs Bad Mirror" [High,Fix released]03:44
wxlmy point is it's not a hardware issue03:44
jmarsdenMy point is that you need to be clear when reporting issues.03:45
jmarsdenHmmm, bug #756719 claims to have been fixed months ago...03:46
ubot5Launchpad bug 756719 in choose-mirror (Ubuntu Oneiric) "PowerPC Natty Beta LiveCD Hangs Bad Mirror" [High,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/75671903:46
wxlindeed it does03:46
wxlbut i'll be damned if the syslog doesn't show it searching around in http://mirror/path/to/nowhere03:47
jmarsdenOK... rmadison shows the supposedly-fixed release as being in Oneiric:  choose-mirror | 2.38ubuntu2 | oneiric/main/debian-installer | all03:48
wxlperhaps it has somehow not made it's way to the ppc lubuntu variant03:48
jmarsdenif the bug is still there, you might want to post a comment to that bug saying so, and attaching relevant log entries.03:49
jmarsdenLubuntu use the same repositories as all other variants.  PPC uses the same repositories as other CPU architectures.03:49
* wxl shrugs03:49
wxlyou tell me why it's not there then03:49
jmarsdenI'm working on it!!03:50
jmarsdenI can't trouble shoot a regression in a CPu arch I don't have here instantly :)03:50
phillwwxl: jmarsden I went through through this earlier and asked wxl to try alternate with 11,10. He reported it was going okay?03:51
wxlno, phillw .. the alternate cd can't detect the cdrom03:51
wxli went through all sorts of hassle to try to get to the bottom of that to no avail03:51
wxlso basically the two available installation options don't work03:52
jmarsdenI'd expect the choose-mirror issue can be worked around with some patience and switching to a shell at the appropriate place during the install process...03:52
wxli would think so too but can't find enough info on it to test that out03:53
phillwjmarsden: the choose mirror can be, but if the alt is failing, it needs re-flagging.03:53
wxli would also think there's a config file like sources.list where that "mirror" derives from03:53
jmarsdenwxl: Hmmm?  Read the source code for choose-mirror, see what it is supposed to do automatically, and do that my hand... what do you mean "can't find enough info on it" ?  The sources are insufficient?03:54
wxli was hoping for something more along the lines of documentation.03:55
jmarsdenwxl: There is probably a man page in the choose-mirror source package, did you look?03:56
jmarsdenHmmm, well, close... there is a README file, at least :)03:57
wxlyeah i think i found that03:57
wxldidn't seem to find anything useful in scanning through it03:57
jmarsdenWell, it says the function of choose-mirror is to set 3 debconf variables.  So worst case you set those by hand to whatever you need, instead of letting choose-mirror do it... right?03:58
wxlgotta find that read me again03:59
jmarsdenmkdir -p /tmp/choose-mirror ; cd /tmp/choose-mirror ; apt-get source choose-mirror ; cd cho* ; less README04:00
wxlinteresting04:05
wxli remember this now04:05
wxli got around the issue with pygobject by installing python-gobject04:06
wxlbut could not figure out any way to install choose-mirror04:06
wxlcan't find it04:06
jmarsdenTo read the README, you just need to download and unpack the source package, no actual need to install choose-mirror for that.04:07
wxlthat's my point though04:07
wxlit couldn't install because it couldn't find it04:07
wxlsimilarly, it can't grab the source because it can't find it04:07
wxlso mayhap therein lies my problem04:08
jmarsdenYou can grab the sources on some other machine, not the PPC one you are trying to install onto.  Do you really have no working computers at all that can download files from the Internet?  If not, how are you connected to IRC??04:08
wxltelekinesis04:09
jmarsdenOK, so teleport the README into your brain and you will be all set :)04:09
wxlagain, the point is i have no problem installing all sorts of things nor any problem connecting to the internet on the ppc machine04:09
jmarsdenThen you can read that README :)04:09
wxllet's put it to you this way-- you can apt-get install choose-mirror?04:10
jmarsdenNo, but did you try the commands I suggested earlier?  They worked for me here.04:11
wxlcurious still04:11
wxlapt-get source choose-mirror fails04:11
wxlit can't find the package04:11
jmarsdenOK.  Works for me on Ubuntu 10.04.2.  I'll retry in a Oneiric VM in a moment.04:12
jmarsdenmkdir -p /tmp/choose-mirror ; cd /tmp/choose-mirror ; apt-get source choose-mirror ; cd cho* ; less README   # works for me in Lubuntu 11.10 Beta2 with updates.04:14
jmarsdenWhat Ubuntu variant are you running on which it fails?04:14
wxl11.1004:14
wxland of course it tis Lubuntu ;D04:15
wxlgrabbed it 30 sept04:16
jmarsdenOK... sudo apt-get update    and try again?04:16
wxli guess i could burn yet another04:16
wxlalready did04:16
jmarsdenWhat is the exact error you are getting from apt-get source choose-mirror ?04:17
wxlE: Unable to find a source package for choose-mirror04:18
jmarsdenDoes it do that for all source packages?  Or only choose-mirror?04:19
wxljust choose-mirror04:19
jmarsdenStrange.  Which mirror are you using for source packages?04:20
wxli.e. what is sources.list, right?04:21
jmarsdenYes.  grep deb-src /etc/apt/sources.list | grep main04:22
wxlcuz there we have 3 pointers to ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports04:22
wxlall of which include main04:22
wxlas does the cdrom04:22
jmarsdenOh... that's not a "normal" official Ubuntu repo mirror... if you switch to us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu does it then let you get the choose-mirror sources?04:24
jmarsdenAlthough http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/pool/main/c/choose-mirror/choose-mirror_2.38ubuntu2.tar.gz works fine for me...04:26
jmarsdenAs does    dget -u -x http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/pool/main/c/choose-mirror/choose-mirror_2.38ubuntu2.dsc04:27
jmarsdenSo that *looks* OK.04:27
wxlyou're sudidn't work04:27
wxloops04:27
wxlstill same error04:27
jmarsdenOK.  Does this work for you (in a temp directory somewhere):  dget -u -x http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/pool/main/c/choose-mirror/choose-mirror_2.38ubuntu2.dsc04:27
wxlheh04:29
wxlnow can't find wget04:29
wxlor dget04:29
jmarsdenI thought you said you had a working machine with Internet access... :)04:29
wxlrather dget isn't on here and can't find the package04:30
wxlwget is here04:30
wxland it connectts to ports.ubuntu.com04:30
wxlbut 404s04:30
jmarsdenAh, dget is part of devscripts04:30
wxlah my fault04:30
wxltypo04:30
wxlno problem with wget04:30
jmarsdenSo the mirror has the file, and you have access to the files at that URL... so why doesn't apt know about them?  Either its database is corrupted or it is not configured correctly??04:31
wxlyeah i'm clueless04:31
jmarsdenDoes   apt-get source choose-mirror --print-uris     provide any additional clues?04:35
wxlsadly same message04:36
wxli moved the flag around just in case the syntax was wrong-- no change04:37
jmarsdenNo, that syntax works here :)   OK, in the name of science I'll set my Lubuntu VM to use that ports repo and see what happens...04:38
jmarsdenWorks fine for me.04:42
wxlhilarious04:42
jmarsdenSo it is not that ports mirror, it is something local to your machine(s) that is causing the issue, as far as I can tell.04:42
wxlhow old is that iso of yours?04:43
jmarsdenWhich one?  I am running Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS as my host OS, and Lubuntu 11.10 updated as of an hour ago in a VM.04:44
jmarsdenHost is amd64, VM is i38604:44
jmarsdenI *could* try setting up a PPC VM using qemu, but I don't think that is exactly trivial...04:45
Unit193You could always go with PearPC :P04:45
wxloh never used that04:46
jmarsdenI've heard of it but never tried it...04:46
wxlqemu kind of sucks04:46
wxli mean it works but it's a PITA to get set up04:46
phillwwxl: don't stress jmarsden He can stress himself enough. jmarsden if you two think the bug still exists from https://launchpad.net/bugs/756719 then resurrect it04:56
ubot5Ubuntu bug 756719 in choose-mirror (Ubuntu Oneiric) "PowerPC Natty Beta LiveCD Hangs Bad Mirror" [High,Fix released]04:56
phillwit is possible that is a regression04:56
jmarsdenphillw: Well, I can't tell if it still exists, I have not reproduced it... but wxl could reopen the bug, I already suggested that.04:57
wxlworking on it04:58
jmarsdenphillw: Re stress... I'm going AFK in ~2 minutes anyway, since I promised my wife I would... :)04:58
