wxli'll be honest.. i'm coming here trying to get help with lubuntu but figure there are enough similaries.. so i've got a powerbook g4 ppc i'm trying to fit ocelot on via the alternate cd (there's something borked about ubiquity on the desktop that i can't fix) and all is fine and well.. until it goes to detect the cdrom. i can't even find it in the device tree. seen some suggestion of using modprobe ide-scsi but this module doesn't exist. any ideas?02:41

jo-erlendwhy did I suddenly loose my flashplayer without being given a new one?09:38
icerootjo-erlend: during update from 11.04 to 11.10?09:39
jo-erlendno, I just installed upgrades for 11.10.09:40
icerootjo-erlend: i had the same problem, in the apt-get logs i found that the package flashplugin-downloader cant resolv an address while downloading09:41
icerootjo-erlend: i already created a bug against this issue09:41
jo-erlendiceroot, if I install it from their site, then how will that affect the one from the package manager?10:01
icerootjo-erlend: there is no flash from package-manager. there is only a script in the package-manager for downloading flash10:01
icerootjo-erlend: because its not allowed do deliver flash within a linux-distribution10:02
jo-erlendoh, ok. But I mean, normally the package manager would handle this for me, right?10:02
icerootjo-erlend: correct10:02
jo-erlendI mean future upgrades to flash. How is that affected if I install it manually?10:02
icerootjo-erlend: dont install it by hand10:03
jo-erlendwhy?10:03
icerootjo-erlend: because of that reason10:03
icerootjo-erlend: always use the package-manager10:03
jo-erlendno, I need to use flash. But it doesn't handle upgrades?10:03
jo-erlendI don't understand why it was uninstalled without any new ones available. I reinstalled flashplugin-downloader and it installed the old version fine, it seems.. Doesn't work though.10:05
jo-erlendiceroot, how do  I install it? Do I need to copy the .so-file, or what? Because I'm not really in the mood to reinstall Ubuntu right now, but I do need to use flash.10:10
jo-erlendThis was a really bad timing for such a bug... :(10:16
jo-erlendI haven't done this in years. I think the last time I did it was in dapper or something.10:18
jo-erlend... and then there were no ubufox. I don't know how that works. Hmm. Perhaps a guest session will work?10:19
jo-erlendhmm. Simply replacing /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflash.so with the new one from their site worked.10:27
MrZepedaYesterday my camera (built in iSight) was working flawlessly. After I ran some upgrades it doesn't work! Is this related to uvcvideo and the new kernel?11:22
MrZepedaAlso although the microphone works good locally, it doesn't work well with skype.11:24
icerootjo-erlend: just reinstall the package "flashplugin-downloader"11:26
MrZepedahmmm... ok11:27
jo-erlendiceroot, no, that didn't seem to work.11:29
icerootjo-erlend: any errors?11:30
icerootjo-erlend: there should be a process which is downloading flash11:30
jo-erlendiceroot, none. The .so file ended up in the right directory, but Firefox didn't use it.11:30
icerootjo-erlend: firefox needs a restart for that11:30
jo-erlendI know.11:30
icerootjo-erlend: hm strange11:31
jo-erlendanother fellow mentioned the same. Probably a new version of Firefox that isn't compatible with the version of the flashplugin, or something?11:31

vividis there any way around the mega conflicts with multi arch support?14:46
vividexample, installing a <package>:i386 that is needed attempts to remove many amd64 packages, including <package>:amd6414:47
vividso, is this expected behavior? or is this a bug that needs to be worked out of multi arch support? honestly with it this way...its a great idea, but not working well14:47
bjsnidervivid, the :i386 will conflict with its amd64 counterpart, so the latter will be removed, and based on dependencies, that could cause a lot of other amd64 packages to be removed in favour of their i386 counterparts14:51
vividso basically, what youre saying is multi arch is completely unusable really14:51
bjsnideri don't see how that follows14:51
vividwell, if i cant install packages that i need, then my result is to run a pure 32bit system14:51
vivideffectively meaning multi arch doesnt provide the functionality its name suggests14:52
vividi dunno, just wondering.  seemed to have few problems with the ia32-libs methodology, maybe it will get better in the future14:53
bjsniderno, it doesn't have to be a pure i386 system, only a part of it14:53
vividwell, you understand that if...for example i have to separate applications14:53
vividboth requiring the same library, but in different architectures14:53
vividthe system is a serious mess at that point14:53
bjsnideryou have to pick one or the other14:54
bjsniderpick one arch14:54
vividand obviously its going to be 64bit.  but thats not the point14:54
bjsniderif you need the lib at i386 then everything that links to it has to be as well14:54
vividand i can provide that, but apt doesnt agree14:55
vividcouldnt i just script PATH for specific programs?14:56
vividand point to the 32bit.....might as well make a chroot14:56
bjsniderwhat do you mean apt doesn't agree?14:56
vividuh, it says no14:57
vividwhen i say yes14:57
bjsniderthe apt commands don't always look pretty for multiarch. you might need to tell it that it's ok to replace an installed package with the i386 version14:59
vividno, it just needs to do what i say, no replacing15:00
vividside by side15:00
vividif i replace the packages, then ill need to do it every time i run such programs15:00
vividconsidering the 64bit system requires them....15:00
bjsniderwhat is the specific apt command you're running and the result?15:01
vividbleh, i should just take all of these libs and create my own ia32-libs package15:01
vividi need libglade2-0:i38615:01
bjsniderand pastebin the result15:01
vividhttp://pastebin.com/5pfK41YE15:03
vividsuch a mess15:04
bjsnideryou have to keep going down that line and telling it to install the i386 versions of those packages15:04
vividevince bleh, purge carp15:04
vividit will remove my natives though and thats not an acceptable alternative15:04
bjsniderso what?15:05
bjsnideri don't think it's going to replace your whole base system15:05
vividpractically15:05
vividlook at the stuff it wants to replace15:06
bjsnideryeah but have you already tried it?15:06
vivideventually it would be half the system15:06
vividim not going to15:06
vividi tried as much as im going to, just wanted to know if why when how this type of stuff will be resolved15:06
bjsniderwell, if you feel strongly about it as an issue, submit a bug15:06
vividyea, attached to debian testing15:07
bjsnidermaybe tell them to put that back in ia32-libs15:07
vividseems like multi arch is too new15:08
vividgood idea though15:08
bjsnidermost of the time it doesn't require you to replace your whole system15:10

jbichabut try https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ZsyncCdImage if you already have an older Oneiric CD19:17
gskerI just do a netboot install. Doesn't that get everything current?19:23
wqrgyufhi19:36
wqrgyufwhat's up with the RC?19:36
wqrgyufis it available for the public?19:37
Ian_CorneNo19:37
wqrgyufwhy not?19:37
Ian_CorneThe moon isn't in position yet19:37
wqrgyufthey can see the moon in london, it is always cloudy19:38
wqrgyufu know all linux with 3.0 kernel don't work well with my wireless card19:39
wqrgyufit can connect but it disconnect all the time19:39
jbichawqrgyuf: release candidate isn't a milestone release like the Betas, the next release is the Final release in 1 week19:40
wqrgyufok undestood19:40
wqrgyufbut u know something about my problem?19:40
wqrgyufit happens with ubuntu and fedora19:41
wqrgyufexactly the same problem19:41
wqrgyufi suppose it's the kernel19:41
jbichathis isn't where you report bugs, and I'm not really a hardware driver guy :)19:41
DatabaseOdd problem: On a liveCD of the Oneiric beta2, I can enable two-finger scrolling, but it doesn't work. The same option works fine on Arch with a bog standard install.19:42
wqrgyufwell i really do not know if that's a bug19:43
Database(this also happens on a install of any other Ubuntu, iirc.)19:43
wqrgyufbtw it is new feature of the kernel, because before i had to install the drivers manually19:44
wqrgyufmaybe intalling the drivers will fix it?19:46
FunnyLookinHatAnyone else here having issues with random "Program closed" messages and whatnot?19:55
FunnyLookinHatI've filed a few bugs - or tried to at least in a couple of cases - but wanted to make sure it wasn't just me...19:55
pdqi upgraded 3 days ago and after updates till now have only had 2 things closing for me, polly and a cryptfolder indicator :P20:00
pdqsynaptic package manager and software centre as well for the 1st day or so20:01
user82until when is rc ready. end of day in usa?20:16
wqrgyufis it public?20:16
wqrgyufsomeone told me is not20:17
jbichathere is no RC, we're focusing on getting the final CDs ready20:17
user82it is not public..omg20:18
Ian_Cornejbicha: are there nightly buidls?20:19

ubottuDaily builds of the CD images of the current development version of Ubuntu are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ and http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/20:19
jbichauser82: everything in Ubuntu is public, it's just not worth the effort to test and qualify a separate RC when what we really want is the final build20:19
user82jbicha https://wiki.ubuntu.com/OneiricReleaseSchedule20:19
pdqif i use the beta 2 and keep up with the updates is that kept upto date with the daily?20:19
jbicha!zsync20:19
ubottuUse zsync to update your Ubuntu CD image without needing to download the parts that didn't change. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ZsyncCdImage20:19
Ian_Corneyes pdq20:20
jbichauser82: look at the Notes column, there isn't a RC build, it's a RC development phase20:20
pdqcool thanks, was just confirming :] working great here, i thought would be much more crashy20:20
user82ah ok..right jbicha20:21
jbichasorry for the confusion, a few releases ago we did have a separate RC milestone20:22
Ian_Cornebut we didn't have beta2 then20:23
* maxb is REALLY REALLY missing Unity corner reveal20:26
tobyhows the release candidate coming along?20:26
Ian_Cornemaxb: oooh20:27
Ian_Cornei thought my unity was just broken20:27
Ian_Cornehow does it reveal now?20:27
Ian_Corneah just go to the left20:28
Ian_Cornethat's acceptable :p20:28
maxbNo, not broken, just the Canonical Design Team telling us what to like, AGAIN20:28
maxbI'm giving it a couple of days, then I think I'm going to send an email to ubuntu-devel pointing out the user turnoff that is "UI Design Fatigue"20:29
binnidoes there exist or is anyone planing on creating a guide to install and configure gnome-shell for "best" experience in Ubuntu 11.10?20:29
binnijust installing gnome or gnome-shell and gnome-tweaks perhaps doesn't seam to give one a polished experience20:29
wqrgyufi prefer failbak than gnome-shell20:30
binniwqrgyuf: going to try failbak/fallback , brb20:32
icerootwith the newest kernel i have about 10 kernel-panics. cant find the infos in /var/log/syslog, just have a photo from my monitor. is there a place where to find the info about the last kernel-panic? or is a photo my only way to report it?20:34
Ian_Corneiceroot: asus eee?20:35
icerootIan_Corne: 90120:35
icerootIan_Corne: seems like its a common issue?20:36
Ian_CorneI have it too20:36
Ian_Cornenot on any other system20:36
icerootIan_Corne: also have kernel panics on eeepc?20:36
Ian_Cornejust my asus eee20:36
icerootIan_Corne: you have already a bug created?20:36
Ian_CorneNo :(20:36
Ian_Cornedidn't have time to go the depth of it20:37
icerootIan_Corne: i will create a bug, maybe you can append to it?20:37
icerootIan_Corne: just "i am also affected"20:37
Ian_CorneYes thank you20:37
binnisomeone should make a Gubuntu/UbuntuShell variant of Ubuntu for a polished Ubuntu with Gnome-Shell as default..20:37
icerootok but where to find the kernel-panic text?20:37
Ian_Corneif you're lucky, it's logged somewhere20:37
Ian_Cornedepends on the panic20:37
icerootIan_Corne: not in syslog20:37
Ian_CorneYeah i never got apport popping up either20:38
Ian_CorneI'm thinking it crashes the system and it has no time/opportunity to log anything20:38
iceroothm "grep -ir panic /var/log/" doesnt bring anything up20:38
icerooti will create the bug and post it to you20:39
Ian_CorneOk thanks20:39
Ian_CorneI'm going to bed asap20:39
Ian_Cornesleepy as hell20:39
jbichabinni: that's quite a bit of work, considering that gnome-shell is an easy install in Oneiric20:39
wqrgyufit's like gradma time to sleep20:39
Ian_Corne22:3920:39
icerootIan_Corne: give me 5 minutes20:39
wqrgyufyeah bro20:40

Ian_Cornestupid word :D20:41
wqrgyufhaha it is easy20:42
wqrgyufstudent20:42
binnijbicha: maybe a comprehensive guide then to how to install and configure gnome shell for a polished experience on 11.1020:44
wqrgyufi am gonna buy the 12.0420:44
Ian_Cornebuy? :p20:44
maxburgh, oneiric has broken circular scrolling on my touchpad20:44
nhainesYay, artworks!  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DIYMarketing20:44
wqrgyufit is not free anymore20:44
Ian_Cornewtf is circular scrolling maxb ?20:44
jbichabinni: I have a slightly outdated one on my blog20:44
Ian_Corneyou mean horizontal+vertical two finger scrolling?20:44
wqrgyufand some shirt or soemthing20:45
jbichabinni: but it's unclear what you mean by polished, except for using Ambiance theme & Ubuntu's font, we do ship GNOME Shell just like upstream20:45
maxbIan_Corne: it's when you run your finger up the edge of the touchpad, and then carry on around the perimeter to scroll further20:46
wqrgyufmine don't even have right click20:46
wqrgyufi think i bought a notebook with very new components20:47
maxbah, it's simply that it's trashed the previous settings, and failed to incorporate gpointing-device-settings in the new settings thing20:49
icerootIan_Corne: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/86950220:52
ubottuUbuntu bug 869502 in linux (Ubuntu) "Kernel-Panic with 3.0.0.12-generic on asus eeepc 901" [Undecided,New]20:52
icerootgreat, needed 20 seconds until someone from canocial confirmed it :)20:58
iceroothope the fix is also that fast :)20:58
icerootIan_Corne: can you also post some infos if you have?20:58
Guest63540good afternoon, Is there a RC today or was that dropped21:01
wqrgyufi week bro21:03
wqrgyufone=i21:03
mrdebare you ready for the new ubuntu21:04
mrdeb?21:04
crunchyiceroot: Looks like I'm happy that asus eeep 1001 is not having this problem21:04
icerootcrunchy: hi :)21:05
Guest63540just curious main relese next week , i wasn't sure the RC was today21:05
wqrgyufi am ready, and my mum too21:05
mrdebis it out today21:06
mrdeb?21:06
wqrgyufit is not for public21:06
Guest63540the 6th was a Release candaite date21:06
mrdebso daily build is ok now21:07
mrdebis that it21:07
wqrgyufyep i came here or the same reason21:07
wqrgyufi am trying fedora in the wait21:09
mrdebwhich one, fuduntu21:10
mrdeb?21:10
wqrgyuffedora 1621:10
wqrgyufbut i have the same problem woth both betas21:10
wqrgyuffedora and ubuntu21:10
mrdebwell use daily build its better21:11
mrdebhow is the fedora 1621:11
wqrgyufgood enough21:11
user82is daily build from tommorrow then (theoretically) "release-ready" (in conculusion of what happened above)?21:14
jbichauser82: it's better than beta, but it's not been fully tested yet21:15
gribouilleis the RC released?21:16
wqrgyufdaily build21:17
user82ok...well who really cares for a system that waits21:17
gribouilleis the RC released?21:19
wqrgyufdaily build it's all i found21:20
wqrgyufhttp://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/21:20
wqrgyuftoday at 821:20
mrdebwq, is that he final one that will be out21:23
mrdeb?21:23
wqrgyufi do not think so21:23
wqrgyufRC is not that anyway21:23
wqrgyufit is just a maybe21:24
ThomasWaldmannhi, is there some estimate for the 11.10 rc iso?21:29
mrdebyou can get it now21:31
ThomasWaldmannas i wanted to secure erase and reinstall my thinkpad x300 anyway, i thought i could give it a final test21:31
ThomasWaldmannhttp://releases.ubuntu.com/11.10/ that still says beta221:31
maxbIIUC correctly from earlier mention in this channel, RC CD images are being skipped in favour of polishing the actual release21:32
maxbHas anyone had any experience with playing DVDs in oneiric?21:32
maxbtotem seems to be using an awful lot of CPU21:33
ThomasWaldmannok, so best way is testing beta2? mrdeb?21:33
wqrgyufyep21:33
wqrgyufor daily built21:34
mrdebget daily build now21:34
ThomasWaldmannok21:34
mrdebgood luck21:34
mrdebmaxb, you should use vlc21:34
user82mrdeb you think it is rc quality now?21:35
maxbmrdeb: Perhaps I should, but the Ubuntu default media player ought to not suck CPU horridly too21:35
ThomasWaldmannehrm, i need rootfs on crypto, but i only see desktop cds. are they ok for that?21:35
maxb:-)21:35
mrdebuser i dont know but its close to release and it willbe better than beta21:36
mrdebonly idfference that will change is package updates21:36
mrdebmax i said before totem is not good and should not be in ubuntu, but vlc should21:36
ThomasWaldmannyeah, i also have better results with vlc (or mplayer) than totem usually21:38
wqrgyufoneric ready21:39
maxbHrm, sorry, I reject your assertion that vlc is superior21:40
mrdebwhat21:40
maxbWhilst it appears to be using less CPU, it's failing dismally at the basic task of playing a DVD whilst maintaining audio/video sync21:40
user82well mrdeb i guess everything is frozen...i should install it who cares i will install 12.04 over it anyway soon21:40
user82well cannot be thaaat rc i guess "oneiric-desktop-amd64.OVERSIZED"21:42
mrdebyes21:42
mrdebtry not thge 64 bit, sometimes thats a problem21:42
jbichaamd64 is only barely oversized, it'll probably work fine21:43
ThomasWaldmannany idea whether the availability of full disk crypto is different from earlier release cds? alternate cd required or is desktop also ok?21:43
dorki would use vlc21:44
dorkif i could ff or rw with arrow keys21:45
dork:P21:45
mrdebwell only problme is vlc is qt so its a big download21:46
mrdebthey should do vlc without qt21:46
maxbI already have qt, that's not a problem21:49
maxbFailing to maintain audio/video sync, however is a problem21:49
mrdebwell the sync was always a problem in totem, no21:52
mrdebyes21:52
ThomasWaldmannwhen using the 11.04 default video player on my machine, videos are rather like a dia show :| but with vlc it works.21:52
mrdebits bec the parts are separate21:53
mrdebbut vlc is one21:53
maxbHm21:56
maxbWell, good to see that Flash apparently works in oneiric21:56
maxbstill, pondering going back to natty21:56
MrZepedaIf I chose to use the old kernel (2.6) the gnome brightness applet works, if I use the new one (3.0) I can't adjust brightness. I'm using a MacBook Pro. Any ideas? Should I file a bug? If yes, where and how? thank you.21:56
blizzowI have a new thinkpad t420s.  Everytime I stick a memory card in the reader I get some kind "error X whilst initialising SD card"  where X can be any of -5 -80 -110 -111.  I have seen a bunch posts in the forums regarding similar error messages.  They're all for old releases though.  Are SD cards b0rked in oneiric?21:57
mrdebwow22:00
mrdebgnome 3.2 is out22:00
mrdebis it in ubuntu 111022:00
MrZepedaBluetooth, webcam, and the microphone stopped working. I've been trying everything I can think of to make them work (for days). Is it probable that they will work once the stable branch is released? Are this problems probably related to the new kernel? Is there a simple way (no re-install) to come back to natty?22:00
mrdebMrZepeda: it is probably not that easy to reinstall and 1110 is newer, so maybe you can work out the bugs.22:02
MrZepedaok. I would like to do that. but I've never done it before and I guess I need some guidance. Everything was working well before.22:03
mrdebyes, i understand. sometimes a new version works different from older one22:04
user82are the staging drivers enabled in ubuntu(i guess so)22:04
MrZepedaI mean I've worked out bugs, but looking at other peoples solutions. I've never really fixed them myself.22:04
mrdebwhats that22:04
mrdebyes22:04
MrZepedaI'm confused if this bugs are related to the new kernel or to ubuntu22:05
mrdebhttp://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/06/one-hundred-paper-cuts-oneiric-cycle-has-started-get-involved/22:05
mrdebthis tells you how to file bugs using apport application in help menu22:05
mrdebwell i use the new kernel but not mac, so im not sure22:06
MrZepedafor ex. the webcam was working when I first installed oniric, and then it stopped working. I was messing with it so much that now I don't know if I made it worse22:06
MrZepedaoh ok22:06
mrdebwebcam should work automatically as long as drive is good22:06
MrZepedahmm22:06
MrZepedagood to know22:06
mrdebdriver22:06
MrZepedabecause I read in wikipedia (kernel 3.0) that iSight should work out the box because its usb based. So I should probably fix the driver then?22:07
MrZepedahas nothing to do with the kernel?22:07
MrZepedaI'm gonna look into that22:07
mrdebwell the kernel includes that driver probably22:08
mrdebso maybe the new one messed it u22:08
MrZepedaaaahaa!22:08
MrZepedaso I'm gonna try to remove it and see what happens22:09
mrdebok22:09
mrdebif you go to terminal22:09
mrdeband then type lsmod, it will tell you all loaded driver modules22:09
mrdebso you can tell which one22:09
MrZepedathe other strange thing is that when the webcam was working (fresh install) and I looked at my sound properties I saw many nvidia kind of sound drivers. (And that is when the webcam worked) now I only see pulse audio.22:10
mrdebhmm so maybe you only need to select another option22:11
MrZepedahmmm...22:11
MrZepedaI'm going to keep messing around with things22:11
MrZepedawill try to remove the firmware from the camera22:11
MrZepedamaybe its already built-in to the kernel22:12
MrZepedathanks for the paper cuts link its a nice idea22:14
mrdebok22:16

user82can i expect more performance on a low power netbook with btrfs? (unimportant data everythign saved online if it crashes or so)22:33
user82not really..i guess?22:34
nhainesuser82: there might not be anyone here who knows.22:45
user82yep..i better go with ext4 now22:45
nhainesIt's a start.  :)22:46
user82who cares i might want to install it again anyway octover 14th...all my real working data is in the dropbox besides a few apps22:46
user82minor installer bug deteced. i connected to my wifi before starting install progress and it asked me if it wants to connect to a wifi(incl the one it was connected) for updates and stuff..will anyone care about this?22:48
templetcan anyone know how to solve this problem ?  http://pastebin.com/3bGcgv9x22:50
nhainestemplet: you might want to ask in a debian channel.22:51
nhainesThe problem may be debian-unique.22:51
DrogosAnyone know of a good guide to get 11.10 to work like 10.10 ? (Like to be able to right click panels, not have global menus and how to move the windows buttons back to the right side)?22:58
nhainesDrogos: yes, you cannot right-click panels.  There's a package you can remove to disable global menus, and I'm not sure if window controls can be moved to the right side.23:01
nhainesYou may not want to use Unity or GNOME Shell if you prefer to customize your desktop shell.  I'm going to track down the global menu package name for you.23:01
Drogosyes, I am using the gnome shell.23:02
DrogosGnome 3 has no support for right click? At all?23:02
Drogos(On panels)23:02
jbichaDrogos: hold down the Alt key23:03
templetthe problem i was having #debian does not support23:03
rwwtemplet: Are you using Ubuntu or Debian?23:03
templetubuntu oneiric23:04
nhainesDrogos: you'll need to ask in a GNOME channel for that.  Likewise with global menus, since I was not aware GNOME Shell supported those.23:04
pythonsnakeHi23:04
rwwtemplet: why is your hostname "debian"?23:04
pythonsnakeHow to burn oneiric in usb?23:04
nhainesrww: maybe because he is using Debian.23:04
templetoddly enough i thought that pastein was for ubuntu23:04
Drogoshmm… Running in virtual box (on ubuntu 10.10), so when I hold down alt key, I move the virtualbox around…23:04
nhainespythonsnake: this is not "burning", but if you are using Ubuntu then you can run Startup Disk Creator.23:04
pythonsnakeOn windows23:04
rwwtemplet: excuse me?23:04
nhainesDrogos: use right Alt key.23:05
nhainesDrogos: Left Alt always moves a window.  That's an X Windows function.  :)23:05
DrogosStill nothing, but I will try gnome channel, thanks :)23:05
pythonsnakeI need to get that work real fast...23:05
rwwtemplet: also, why are you asking us questions about a pastebin from *February*23:05
templethere is my ubuntu pastebin  http://pastebin.com/PykeziVq23:06
nhainespythonsnake: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download23:06
templeti thought it was my identical problem23:06
nhainesIn step 2 you can choose that you want to create a USB stick and choose Windows, and then click "Show me how" for instructions and links, with screenshots.23:06
rwwtemplet: when asking for help, do not use other peoples' pastebins, make your own in future, or we get problems like that. Thanks :)23:06
pythonsnakenhaines: there's no 11.10 in the list23:13
nhainespythonsnake: that is because 11.10 is not released yet.23:13
nhainespythonsnake: I didn't say to do anything at step 1.  I said to skip to step 2.23:14
pythonsnakenhaines: so?23:14
nhainespythonsnake: so you cannot choose to download 11.10 because it does not exist.23:14
pythonsnakeso how can I install oeniric?23:14
templetwhere can i change the default unity icon ?23:16
nhainespythonsnake: we'd better start at the beginning.  But first, do you understand that oneiric is not complete and may not work at all on your system and may break everything?23:17
nhainestemplet: you can't.23:17
pythonsnakeyes.....23:17
nhainespythonsnake: Okay.  The first thing you need is the Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop CD ISO image.  Do you have that yet?23:18
pythonsnakesure...23:18
nhainesOkay, in that case, all of the steps listed at http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download should work for you.23:20
MrZepedaare you already running ubuntu?23:20
nhainesDo not choose Ubuntu 11.10 (it doesn't exist).  Choose Ubuntu 11.04 and select your oneiric ISO anyway.23:20
pythonsnakeThat's what I wanted to know23:20
pythonsnakethanks23:20
nhainespythonsnake: you're welcome.  Thanks for stepping back a step with me.23:21
pythonsnakeI can't select the iso...23:21
pythonsnakegot it23:22
pythonsnakechanged xubuntu-11.10-beta2-desktop-amd64.iso to xubuntu-11.04-beta2-desktop-amd64.iso23:22
nhainesaha!23:23
pythonsnake...windows can't format linux fs23:24
nhainesThat is correct.  Windows can only format FAT12, FAT32, NTFS, and exFAT.23:25
pythonsnakeWhat now23:26
nhainesDepending on how fast you need it, http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/daily-live/ might be a better ISO source, as it will have all of the updates since beta 2.23:26
nhaineswhat do you mean, what now?23:26
pythonsnakeI have a Linux file system USB23:27
pythonsnakeI can't format it with Windows23:27
nhainesYou can format it, but you'll lose all of the data on it.23:27
pythonsnakeYes23:27
pythonsnakeHow to do so23:27
nhainesGo to Start, then right-click on Computer or My Computer, then choose Manage.23:28
pythonsnakegot it23:28
nhainesSelect the Disk Management tool and you'll be able to format the partition.  Please take care to choose the correct one!23:28
nhainesFAT32 or NTFS should work with a bootable USB stick.23:28
pythonsnakeOk23:28
* pythonsnake formats C:/23:28
nhaineshaha  :)23:29
pythonsnakeIt shows only a 184mb partition23:29
jbichapythonsnake: I did that once in Vista, it's an interesting way to  break Windows23:29
pythonsnakejbicha: actually, it's OEM and I don't have recovery disc, so I can't do that yet :(23:30
nhainespythonsnake: it may actually be easier (seriously) to burn a CD, boot from that, and use the Live CD to create the USB.23:30

Servercrashnhaines, thx, any idea about how to add intel 855 as display card23:34
Servercrashthe display app fails to detect the display card23:34
Servercrashand hence has setup some generic card shows single 1024x768 display23:34
nhainespythonsnake: You're trying to install a prerelease OS with a USB stick that isn't properly detected by Windows and you have no way to reinstall Windows if it fails, is that correct?  :(23:34
pythonsnakeyes23:35
jbichapythonsnake: without Ubuntu and without a CD, you can try unetbootin but that's not an official install method23:35
nhainesServercrash: the display app is only showing what the Linux kernel and X detects.23:35
Servercrashwell system info shows right display card23:35
nhainespythonsnake: I strongly recommend that you don't continue until you have some way to recover if the Ubuntu install should fail.23:35
pythonsnake:(23:35
pythonsnakeI won't give up23:36
jbichapythonsnake: and you should probably make a backup of your data first23:36
nhainespythonsnake: and if the USB stick really isn't being detected correctly (instead of Windows being confused), it might be damaged.23:36
=== elmo_ is now known as Guest42905
Servercrashnhaines: but unforutnately no further go from there for some reason X doesnt detect the same23:36
pythonsnakeHa!23:36
pythonsnake!!23:36
nhainesYou'll probably need to write zeros to the USB stick to remove the partition table.  Then you can intialize and format the stick.23:36
pythonsnakeFound my 1gb sd!23:37
nhainesServercrash: I haven't done a manual xorg.conf file in ages... I wouldn't know which driver to install.23:37
nhainespythonsnake: careful, some computers can't boot from SD.  But it's worth a try!  :)23:37
pythonsnake:(23:37
pythonsnakeFilled23:37
pythonsnakenhaines: are you sure choosing 11.04 is the way to go ?23:38
Servercrashnhaines, thx anyway, i guess Xorg - configure cannot be run while using X23:39
nhainespythonsnake: there shouldn't be a difference from Ubuntu 11.04 to oneiric.23:39
nhainesServercrash: that's right!  :)23:39
pythonsnakeok23:39
pythonsnakenhaines: Do you thinnk Ubuntu is compatible with G62 A455SX ?23:40
nhainespythonsnake: I don't know, specifically.  But if you can get that USB stick written and it boots, then you will know for sure.  :)23:41
nhainespythonsnake: if you can wait a week until the release, you can probably have a CD mailed to you.23:41
pythonsnakemailed ?!23:42
Guest42905evening, Was there a RC scheduled today?23:42
nhainesGuest42905: it was certainly scheduled!  Technically there are still 16 minutes left in "today".23:42
pythonsnakenhaines: what do you mean o.O23:42
Guest42905TY!23:42
pythonsnakeGonna install Xubuntu23:42
pythonsnakeBRB23:42
nhainesGuest42905: it usually doesn't take so long so we're in suspense as well.  :)23:43
nhainespythonsnake: I mean I would be happy to mail you a CD if you don't have any and you can't get a USB stick or SD card to work.23:43
Guest42905hehe been running the betas and was gonna load up RC tonight23:43
nhainesGuest42905: if you simply do all the updates, you'll pretty much be running the RC.23:43
nhainesIf that's any consolation.  :)  Otherwise, you can get the latest live CD from cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/23:44
nhainesToday's image should be virtually identical to the RC.23:44
Servercrashsuccessfully running ubuntu 11.10 on pentium M 1.6ghz / 1GB/hdd 80gb/vram 32mb :)23:44
Guest42905yeah, putting new RC on new HD23:44

nhainesIf you run out of time waiting for RC anyway.  :)23:45
nhainesMy pleasure.  Good luck and have fun!23:45
Servercrashnhaines, unity didnt work on 11.04 but on 11.10 everything working as of now i guess :)23:45
Guest42905<<<<loves buntu23:45
nhainesServercrash: yes, there's lots of that.  :)23:45
nhainesGuest42905: it's only getting better!  Soon we'll just be waiting impatiently for the "precise pangolin" release!  (still ubuntu+2, hehe)23:46
Servercrashnhaines, just need to figure out how the get the display configured for resolution heigher than 1024x768 :D23:46
Servercrashjust one hack was required, adding acpi=off in kernel boot command list23:47
nhainesServercrash: hmm, well, it could be a start.  :)  What I usually did was try to add a monitor section that listed the extra resolutions.  That usually worked.23:50
thenickpersonI set Ubuntu's mouse cursor theme to dark, but the main (arrow) cursor is still white, while all others are black. How can I fix this?23:58
