jon_high9000Hello, is there a way to view hidden files like with ubuntu i.e. ctrl+h?00:25
jon_high9000I meant view hidden files in kubuntu 11.04.00:28
sithlord48jon_high9000, you can use alt+. in dolpnin or use the view menu in it to toggle show hidden01:05

Guest84619hi,all of my audio works in the ubuntu desktop... but only KDE apps work in KDE... I am using 11.10 prerelease, but I had this problem in 11.0402:43
Guest84619at first no audio worked.... It tried to put audio out of a non-existant HDMI connection... I told it to prefer the internal audio, it it worked... but only for KDE apps02:44
brambleclawhey i've been having trouble getting my kopete app to function with my windows live ID it keeps telling me that i have the wrong password. what can i do to fix it?03:00
Guest84619brambleclaw: what version, what os,  and you double checked that your password is correct in another app?03:02
brambleclawkubuntu the most recent version avalable through KPackageKit and i have checked and double checked on the hotmaile wedsite03:04
Guest84619brambleclaw: same problem for me, using ubuntu 11.10 and whatever comes with it03:04
brambleclawthats weird03:04
Guest84619you did email@hotmail.com?03:05
brambleclawyeah\03:05
Guest84619or just email?03:05
macoGuest84619: try changing it in pavucontrol instead of just changing the kde setting03:05
brambleclawi used  @hotmail03:05
Guest84619so did i.. in the passport section...  is broken?  maybe another server"?03:05
Guest84619maco: will try now03:05
Guest84619maco: the sound works in pavucontrol, but it does not work in flash03:08
Guest84619maco: ... I turned _OFF_ the high deff audio and ... IT WORKS!!!03:08
macohaha03:08
Guest84619I already had the internal audio set as the preference03:08
macooh silly flash03:08
Guest84619maco: I would have thought that off would mean something like sending audio to /dev/null03:09
Guest84619.. maybe my games have sound now...03:09
macoapparently "on" meant "configuration? but but but but HI DEF!"03:09
Guest84619maco: High Definition Audio Controller:   Profile:  Off    ... not Digital Sound HDMI output...03:11
macothe HD in HDMI is high def, though, isnt it?03:11
Guest84619this is funny because I don't have HDMI plugged in... and I would think HDMI has a way to detect if something is plugged into it..?03:11
Guest84619maco: yes03:11
macojack sense? no idea. i know 1/8" jacks have jack sense, but being possible in hardware doesnt necessarily mean the driver supports it fully03:11
Guest84619maco: should I file a bug?03:14
macosure. ubuntu-bug linux, then after you get the bug number, apport-collect -p alsabase   BUGNUMBER03:15
macoerm, alsa-base, with a -03:16
macothe first because i suspect a kernel bug, the second so that audio debugging stuff gets attached03:16
brambleclawmaco i just downloaded the app "emesene" and it works!03:25
brambleclawi logged in and it works03:25
brambleclawguest 84619 hey i just downloaded the app "emesene" and it works i tested it03:39

excognachi all! Lately I had serious trouble with LibreOffice: while i was writing a document and a spreadsheet or a presentation was open at the same time, after a while I could only use my mouse to point but not click, keyboard was off too, so I had to reboot this LAPTOP. Note that all files were super simple. So what's the matter?17:49

jussishane2peru: not I, but did you have a particular question?21:17
shane2perumostly, how to install it and get it running in kde, I used it in my gnome days a little21:17
shane2peruthought about re-visiting it, however seems kde support/setup is lacking21:18

sithlord48open konsole. and run sudo dpkg --configure -a21:44
sithlord48should finish up your installs (sorry for the delay)21:44
cherNo problem. Is it known why dpkg hangs with the latest updates?21:45
sithlord48no but i  think its just the gui tools...21:45
cherI can see (ps -aef) that dpkg is still running.21:46
chergui tools blocking its output pipe?21:46
sithlord48oh you might have to 'sudo kill-all dpkg' ffirst21:46
sithlord48happens w/ muon as well but never noticed it w/ apt-get21:47
cherOh and it was muon, not kpackagekit btw.21:48
cherI never know which of these two will run. Why are there two anyway? It seems random which of these shows me that there are updates, and sometimes both of them pop up.21:48
sithlord48idk i don't use the gui tools to update, my gf did untill i had to do that a few times on her machine, now she's using apt-get also ..21:48
sithlord48there are two because your using not oneriric, and kpackagekit was default before then .21:49
cherIf only I knew how to disable this muon and kpackagekit sh*t - but these new KDE versions are so freaking intransparent.21:50
sithlord48im on natty i just removed packagekit, i only have muon... (but idk what the exact packages i removed were)21:51
cherThis KDE stuff looks nice but is full of bugs.21:51
sithlord48kpackagekit?21:52
sithlord48oh kubuntu in general?21:52
cherWell... I still prefer kubuntu over ubuntu because of KDE. I like the possibilities for keyboard shortcuts, like that I can configure Meta+Space for changing the screen of a window.21:53
cherBut compared to kubuntu 9.04, kubuntu 11.04 is - sorry, but these words are justified - fucking shit.21:53
sithlord48lol , not on my machines.21:53
cherI don't know if it's the quality of kubuntu itself, or if it's the upstream packages.21:53
macofamily friendly channel, please dont swear, even if you're angry21:54
cherhttp://www.riedquat.de/blog/2011-08-21-02 - I gave up extending the list btw..21:54
sithlord48i have i don't even know how many kubuntu machines that i maintain. people who used to run windows and beg me to fix their machines,.21:54
sithlord48natty have been well beahaved on all the hw i've used it on.21:56
cherIf I would have more time I would use LFS. I'm using a distro for not having to compile every little thing myself and take care of all the library dependencies etc.. I used SuSE for over a decade, then happily switched to Kubuntu when I discovered Kubuntu 9.04. But now I'm so disappointed that I seriously consider switching back to OpenSuSE.21:56
sithlord48cher:  should i address them here?21:56
cherThe hardware?21:57
sithlord48the krandr thing is not to be used when you have a propertary driver.21:57
cherHaha, good joke - how the hell is a user supposed to know that?21:57
sithlord48also never use sudo to start graphical programs.21:57
sithlord48use kdesudo21:57
cherI don't have problems with sudo.21:58
sithlord48you can trash a system that way21:58
cherHow that?21:58
sithlord48by screwing up premissions in your ~/ folder.21:59
cherIf I can trash the system by running sudo xyz instead of kdesudo xyz, there's something seriously going wrong...21:59
cherHow should kdesudo behave differently regarding permissions from sudo?21:59
sithlord48no , for gui programs you should use kdesudo not cli stuff21:59
cherWhat does kdesudo do different than sudo regarding the permissions?22:00
sithlord48seams like a good part of this list seams to be related to the  ati driver/xorg?22:00
sithlord48khexedit = use okteta instead22:01
cherWhat was the command to clean a crashed apt-something?22:01
sithlord48sudo dpkg--configure -a22:01
sithlord48wait..22:02
sithlord48sudo dpkg --configure -a22:02
cherWah... okteta definitely cannot replace khexedit. It cannot even decode utf-8. khexedit could.22:02
cherIt looks pretty close to khexedit, but has fewer features.22:03
sithlord48okteta is great. have you used it lately? i see Utf-8 in my list..22:03

cherI've just started it. The one that comes with kubuntu 11.04.22:03

cherokteta is full of bugs.22:05

cherAnd now, dpkg --configure -a doesn't help, I still can't run apt-something.22:06

cherqaptworker is an evil binary. Binaries should give info when run with --help.22:11
sithlord48its part of qapt, the qt apt backend thats part of muon, and prolly whats got your lock22:12
rtdosi get this error whenever i use sudo apt-get in some form::   sudo: unable to resolve host KUBUNTU22:12
rtdoscould that be related to my update/lockup issue?22:12
sithlord48perhaps.22:12
cheryep it was what held the lock. Well... if muon was killed, it really should've taken care about its child processes :(22:12
sithlord48yes it should have..22:13
rtdoskernel bug?22:13
rtdoslike i said this didn't with me until recently22:13
sithlord48why do u think everything is a kernel bug?22:13
damaranzigI was here a while ago pestering this channel with my problem concerning  inability to see grub with OS selections after I updated 10.10 to 11.04...It seems grub, this time, has a problem with the monitor because there's this thing that says "input not supported". In my "Additional Drivers" app, I have NVIDIA 173 which active but "currently not in use"...so which driver am i actually using ? how do I find this out? Thanks for any help coming.22:14
sithlord48lsmod too see loaded modules22:15
damaranzigI have tried the "shift key" hold on start...but still I didn't see grub22:15
damaranzigsithlord48, thanks...i'll check that pronto22:15
damaranzigI've just done lsmod and didn't see nvidia22:16
sithlord48as for getting to grub, it depens on your version (prolly grub2) that should be hold shift as grub starts, but some computers will flag kbd error if you hold it as soon as you turn the machine on or two long before grub, some i've noticed do not init the kbd fast enuff (usually older machines w/ usb kbd) sometimes on those helps to go to bios or hit a boot selection key then try to get to grub menu22:17
damaranzigmy hdd was dual-boot when i was using 10.10...after i updated to 11.04 I don't see grub anymore + i see that "input not supported" message on my monitor at boot time22:19
cherI'm just downloading kubuntu 11.10 beta 2. I don't think it makes sense reporting 11.04 bugs when 11.10 is on the way. I'll check how 11.10 beta 2 behaves.22:20
damaranzigi thought 11.04 was supposed to be stable22:20
cherdamaranzig: That's what I thought, too :D22:22
damaranzigcher, does natty use nouveau ?22:22
cherI can't tell because I don't know what nouveau is?22:22
damaranzigah, ok22:23
cherBut if you tell me what it is there's a very good chance that I will find out.22:23
cherOr wait I'll just google it up myself.22:23
damaranzignouveau was the default graphics driver for 10.10, I guess22:24
cherIs nouveau specific to nvidia?22:24
damaranzignvidia is a third-party...10.10 came shipped with nouveau22:24
cherBut nouveau is for nvidia hardware only, right?22:25
damaranzigI'm not sure if nouveau is specifically for nvidia hardware but i did lsmod and i saw neither nouveau nor nvidia22:26
cherI think nouveau is for nvidia hw. I only have amd hw here.22:26
BluesKajit is for nvidid , it's the default22:27
BluesKajerr nvidia22:27
damaranzigok22:27
damaranzigthanks for the info22:27
BluesKajif you wany 3d and DR / desktop effects then ou have to install the recommended driver in system > additional drivers22:29
BluesKajdarn KB ...too many coffee stains22:29
damaranzigBluesKaj, done that and it says my nvidia is "active" but "not in use"22:29
tonymcdoes anyone know why my system freezes under heavy disk I/O? i have played with schedulers - tried noop, deadline and cfq - deadline seems to be best but still freezes my machine when i copy a lot of stuff to/from USB22:30
damaranzigso pls. tell me anyone, how to see my grub with OS selection at boot-time...i miss my grub22:30
BluesKajdamaranzig, teah that might be a bug , tonymc , it's quite common to have the driver in use but jockey doesn't link to what's actually beinused , if desktop effects are working then ignore that message22:31
damaranzigwould reinstalling grub solve the problem ???22:33
tonymcdamaranzig: just edit your grub menu22:33
tonymcyou can use grub customizer if you're not comfortable with editing grub config by hand22:33
dankdamaranzig If don't have the other download this and fix the grub. Here you can downlad the supergrubdisk www.supergrubdisk.org22:33
tonymcthere's a PPA for grub customizer22:33
BluesKajdamaranzig, hold the  shift key sown after the bios scrn til grub appears ...or you could edit the time out in /etc/default/grub22:34
damaranzigBluesKaj, thanks...will try that22:34
BluesKajsown=down22:34
BluesKajdank, no need for supergrub , if it's theonly OS on that drive then kubuntu auto boots into it not showing grub in the process22:36
damaranzigi actually want my grub because of my dual boot HDD22:37
damaranzignow, what is "grub_default=0" ?? in etc/default/grub22:38
damaranzigand there's this: GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true ... should i change this to "false"???22:39
damaranzigok...will install startupmanager and see how it works22:47
dankBluesKaj damaranzig have a dual boot, it's not only OS in te PC... and damaranzig can install a new grub22:50
