bartjehi guys, I've got a bit of a mistery here, jack just won't start in ubuntu 11.10 beta 64 bit... on my 32 bit system it does work though.13:29
holsteinthe bigger mystery is, why do you have both ;)13:30
bartjelol, two different machines13:30
holsteinbartje: try gksudo qjackctl just to be sure its not permissions13:30
holsteinbartje: the same audio hardware? the same interface?13:31
bartjehm, won't start13:31
holsteinbartje: what interface?13:31
bartjeit's as if the driver doesn't find my audiofire1213:31
holsteinyou have *lots* of differences between those machines other than the OS13:31
holsteinthe firewire chipset can prevent JACK from starting13:32
bartjeI used the same soundcard13:32
holsteinthe audiofire?13:32
bartjeit used to work in 11.0413:32
bartjeyes13:32
holsteinit uses a firewire controller though13:32
holsteinbartje: i would get a live CD, and confirm the hardware works13:33
holsteinsomething like AVLinux13:33
bartjebut the alsa driver doesn't want to start either, for the onboard soundcard13:33
holsteindid you reinstall JACK?13:33
bartjeoh yes, twice.. lol13:33
bartjeI also followed the wiki to add raw1394 to the modules to be loaded13:34
bartjethe wiki on linuxmusicians13:34
holsteinsure, but you shouldnt need to do that13:36
holsteinand that could break something in the newer version of ubuntu, who knows13:36
bartjedidn't work without it either13:36
holsteini would still try with a live CD13:36
holsteinthe only way to really know is to either take a live CD, and try, or install 32bit ubuntu13:36
holsteinyou can look in the JACK messages13:37
bartjebut how do I know what's wrong with the current system? it did work in 11.0413:37
holsteinpaste those in, and try and catch LAS or one of the JACK folks13:37
holsteinbartje: if it works with a 32bit live CD, then you know whats up13:37
holsteini heard you had to use the older stack for that device13:37
holsteinthe juju stack wouldnt work13:38
holsteinbut, i thought 11.04 had that13:38
holsteini would put the firewire device down, try a live CD such as avlinux, and see if the other hardware workds13:38
holsteinworks*13:38
bartjeok... let's try :-)13:39
holsteinwhat youve got now is a case where you could have broken something getting FW to work13:39
holsteinOR, it could just be buntu13:39
holsteinim a regular ubuntu supporter and user, and i would never use the non-LTS versions of ubuntustudio13:40
holsteinthats just my personal preference though13:40
holsteinnot an excuse for why its not working13:40
bartjeI also installed the ubuntustudio packages, aparently it added a second raw1394.rules file... hmm...13:41
holsteinmaybe, but, running gksudo qjackctl should get you around that13:42
holsteini do that as a test with my FW device13:42
holsteinif it runs as root, then you can stop messing around with the hardware13:42
bartjeeven the dummy driver doesn't work13:42
holsteinright, so thats something in the software13:43
holsteinand you've been messing about with it, so im not sure if it came like that or not13:43
bartjeit's only 2 things I've changed.. the .rules file, and the modules13:44
* holstein shrugs13:44
bartjeand reïnstalling jack of course13:44
holsteinits defintely JACK though13:44
holsteinor software13:44
holsteintry #opensourcemusicians13:45
bartjeI will, thx13:45
holsteini see las is out of town for a bit13:45
