RangerManare all the buntu's set to come out at the same time ? (X/K/L)00:02

RangerManah.  So around the 12th ?00:03
charlie-tcatypo00:03
bazhang13th yeah00:04
RangerManI suppose there's no use in going XP -> Somebuntu now then just to have to do it all over.00:07
=== __mikem is now known as mmiller235
freedom07rangerman if you mean duel boot with xp, you shouldnt have to re-install xp00:21
RangerManfreedom07: Nah, XP is old so I think I'm going to just replace it.00:21
freedom07ok00:21
RangerManfreedom07: I'm tired of hearing "OMG, u runz XPz still?!"00:22
freedom07lol dont tell em00:23
RangerManWell, I moved all the Steamapps over to my other machine since it's 'more beefy'00:25
RangerManand put Windows7 on it00:25
RangerManso.. no real reason for me to keep this one in XP00:25
mhall119hmmmm, I seem to have screwed up my Unity configs00:26
freedom07i keep XP partion just cos wife bought an ipod a while back, and for etax aplication, mainly logged into lubuntu00:26
Meshezabeelwhy was the 13th specifically chosen for the release as opposed to any other day?00:27
mhall119nvm, got it back00:27
mhall119Meshezabeel: release is traditionally on a thursday00:28
Meshezabeelokay, didn't the release dates used to be closer to the end of the month?00:28
mhall119Meshezabeel: yeah, but for 10.10 they bumpted it all the way up to the 10th00:29
Meshezabeelokay, thanks :)00:29
mhall119Meshezabeel: there was a discussion a year or so back showing that, due to winter holidays and such, there was actually significantly less time in the *.04 release cycles than in the *.10 release cycles00:30
mhall119so maybe early-month *.10 releases will be the new normal00:30
Meshezabeelokay, I actually like it better earlier too (for psychological reasons), because when you hear it is going to be released in October, it is a lot harder to wait until the end of October. :p00:31
FernandoMiguelnite00:34
DaekdroomIs anyone else having trouble connecting to MSN through Pidgin and Empathy?00:34
MeshezabeelDaekdroom: no00:35
MeshezabeelDaekdroom: or, if you mean specifically in 11.10, then I cannot tell you either way00:37
mhall119does the CCSM Unity plugin no longer control Unity?00:38
* mhall119 assumes is has something to do with gconf->gsettings move00:38
min|dvir|usHi. I set a value in /etc/environment. I see it as a non-root user but not as root.01:25
rdewit_hi, hoping to find a solution to my problem here: my top panel's theme is broken and I can't get it back to ambiance. Even setting the GTK theme with gnome-tweak-tool does not have any effect. Removing all /apps/panel settings doesn't seem to work either. unity --reset doesn't reset the top panel either. Something seems really broken.01:28
rdewit_any way to reset the top panel?01:28
jbichardewit_: did you try logging out and back in?01:29
jbichardewit_: are you talking about GNOME Fallback?01:29
min|dvir|usjbicha: he said 'unity --reset'.01:29
rdewit_jbicha, i'm using unity (standard). yeah. can do another reboot, but when i removed the gconf settings i did it in another terminal whilst logged out from unity01:30
rdewit_and i know it's my settings somehow being broken, since a newly created user doesn't have the problem (and setting the gtk theme in the 'advanced settings' just works.01:31
jbichardewit_: the theme is mostly if not entirely set in gsettings now01:31
rdewit_but not with my migrated settings from 11.04 to 11.10. It used to work but between some updates things fell over. I'm really curious where the settings for the top panel are stored.01:31
min|dvir|usrdewit_: try going into ccsm and resetting to default profile.01:32
min|dvir|usHow do I set an environment variable for root?01:33
min|dvir|usNobody has any idea?01:37
dooglusare there any 'dark' themes for GTK3?  I like light text on a dark background.01:39
Andy80anyone of you is having this strange bug: I've upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10 on my Asus EeePC 1005 and using image viewer to view images the touchpad stops working... I had to use the keyboard to reboot the system...01:42
* rdewit_ is back. ccsm killed my session and therefore my chat. using irssi now...01:44
min|dvir|usHow do I set an environment variable for root?01:46
rdewit_so, now after running ccsm and having it killed my session, i'm back to where i was a few days ago: unity doesn't run and I only have nautilus running.01:47
min|dvir|usrdewit_: ppa-purge xorg-edgers01:47
min|dvir|usWait, a fresh account works fine?01:48
rdewit_yeah, fresh account is just fine01:48
rdewit_i've had gnome data setting converter crash many a times in the past few days01:48
rdewit_i think something went wrong there01:48
rdewit_but top panel is gtk and shared by gnome (i've also got gnome3 installed)01:49
bazhanghttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnvironmentVariables min|dvir|us01:49
min|dvir|usbazhang: it sets for non-root user, but doesn't work for root.01:49
min|dvir|usHmm, nevermind.01:50
rdewit_min|dvir|us: unity is really broken now, but unity-2d works (but still with broken top panel)01:51
min|dvir|usrdewit_: consider removing .gconf .gconfd .gnome .gnome2 .nautilus and whatever else is GNOMEy.01:52
rdewit_min|dvir|us: yeah, did that, but can try it again. it had no effect on the top panel. at all.01:52
min|dvir|usAlso .config/{things,go,here}.01:53
rdewit_min|dvir|us: any specifics in there that could cause it? i've got many settings built up over the years, and would hate to lose them if not necessary01:54
min|dvir|uscompiz-1.01:55
min|dvir|usDelete all hidden directories from your account present in the fresh account.01:56
rdewit_min|dvir|us: that makes sense. I'll rename those and see what happens.01:56
DanaGweird, somehow I have a compiz profile named "" (empty string), and another named:02:01
DanaG02:02
DanaGYes, garbage.02:02
DanaGAnd I've lost Unity.02:02
min|dvir|usDanaG: make a fresh account. Does it work?02:03
DanaGWell, I haven't tried a whole new account, but I've tried removing compiz-1 dir.02:04
DanaGThat works, until it breaks again.02:04
min|dvir|usSo make a new account.02:04
min|dvir|usIf you don't, you'll never know if it's your settings or a broken package.02:05

DanaGOr I think I am.02:06
DanaGUpdate-manager died, but aptd is going.02:06
rdewit_DanaG: updates prob won't help. I just noticed i have similar garbage02:07

min|dvir|usThe garbage is irrelevant, most likely.02:07

DanaGI did recursive-unset on gconf tree related to compiz.02:13
DanaGNow I have it back, for now.02:13
DanaGhar, with correct DPI settings, the default fonts are huge.02:14
DanaGBut by default, the X server LIES about screen size, on purpose.02:14
bazhang!find remastersys02:16
ubottuPackage/file remastersys does not exist in oneiric02:17
* rdewit_ is one step closer: it looks like the top panel settings are either in .local, .cache or .compiz-1. Any interest in me investigating further for future reference?02:17
DanaGalso check gconf?02:18
rdewit_DanaG: if your question was for me: no, none of the gconf settings seemed to make a difference. My top panel had a wrong style and i could not change it back by any means. It's ok after renaming those 3 dirs. I'll find which one it was.02:19
DanaGhmm, is it possible to make the new alt-tab always go through all windows?02:20
DanaGAlternately, if I set it to super+tab instead of alt-tab, it still shows the dash if I hit super-tab quickly.02:22
graingertdid the shadows used to be re-size targets?02:23
graingerton windows in 11.0402:23

graingertit was great02:29
DanaGYeah, the old static switcher doesn't look as spiffy as the new one.02:30
DanaGBut the new one acts oddly... too much like the things I dislike about Mac.02:30
DanaGAnd if you put it on super, it acts inconsistently.02:30
DanaGsuper-tab once, quickly... flips window and opens the dash.02:30
DanaGsuper, hold, tab... gives the switcher.02:31
DanaG"automatically grid windows on timer"... timer needs to be configurable.02:32
graingertyou mean alt+tab02:33
graingertsuper tab does nothing on default settings02:33
DanaGno, I mean, if you assign it to super instead.02:33
DanaGAnd super+w does "scale" AND shows the dash.02:33
DanaGTry it, quickly.  super-w.  super-w.02:33
DanaGrelease the super key after each try.02:34
graingertoh you'll need to assign dock to something else02:35
DanaGwell, it really should realize I've hit something else, and not still show the dash.02:36
DanaGIt should be able to see: super down, super up.  Show dash.02:36
DanaGSuper down.  something else down, up.  Super up.  NO dash.02:37

dylan-mjbicha: Okay, thanks for the clarification. Do you know if there's a particular reason? I know we had xterm before, but I weirdly don't remember it having an entry here. Seems pretty heavy to have three terminal apps in our little applications list :/05:28
dylan-mI guess my memory is just failing, then. Thank you for the direction!05:29
jbichadylan-m: showing the icons by default is new to 11.10; I don't like it but I need to convince the right people :)05:31
dylan-mAh, I see that now that I'm reading. Grr, this'll probably end up on the released iso either way :(05:32
jbichayeah, it's not a good idea to change it now but it can be looked at for 12.0405:34
jbichait's like a 2-line change but still...05:34
rajuhow can i know the releasing of development versions for testing , i mean now 11.10 ready to release , so when 12.04 will be released for testing ?05:51

jbicha!releases05:52
ubottuUbuntu releases a new version every 6 months. Each version is supported for 18 months to 5 years. More info at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases & http://wiki.ubuntu.com/TimeBasedReleases05:52
rajudylan-m thanks i will make a look05:52
dylan-mraju: If you want to help out right away, it'll make sense to hop on when the first alpha comes out, which is December 1st.05:53
rajudylan-m,  yes man i wanna05:55
rajudylan-m,  whats that developer summit ? I mean whats the working going to be done ? is it for development of applications of 12.0405:57
dylan-mraju: That's where lots of people get together and plan out what to do for the next six months, then there's a little unwritten gap after that where everyone recovers from the thing. That kind of development discussion usually happens on the mailing lists at lists.ubuntu.com, and various IRC rooms. Lots of people post about development type stuff on planet.ubuntu.com as well :)06:01
rajunow i got it , what are things to be include , how it would be, everything right ?06:03
rajudylan-m, ^^06:03
dylan-mraju: Yeah, that's pretty much it. You can participate in UDS remotely, too: there's an audio feed out of all the rooms and an IRC channel for each one, too. You might learn some interesting stuff! There'll be something about that on Planet Ubuntu in the coming weeks (and you can always check out summit.ubuntu.com).06:11
dylan-mraju: So, err, all kinds of stuff going on. I couldn't possibly tell you all of it (or much of it, even), but hopefully that'll give you some ideas. Good luck!06:11

cladAnd some kind of errors are replaced by others09:16
clad(like fake 404 page when actually the server can't be reach, makes software think the server is reachable but not working)09:17
clad(Or http answers being sent through protocoles not related to the web at all)09:18
cladAnyhow, using US servers seem to work, thanks !09:19
cladOf course the download of the flash plugin is slow as hell... 10Kbs... Sure Adobe, give us even more reason to want to boycott your plugin...09:29
GirlyGirlclad: I don't think abode does that on purpose. Unfortuantely it can be quite difficult for companies like abode to have servers in CHina esp after what happened with google09:30
cladWell then, why is everything related to flash always such a pain while I generally don't have problems with western softwares ? Even the US Ubuntu repo works at max speed.09:32
cladThe whole idea of having to have a package that wget the binary from their website is quite ridiculous. There is many other proprietary software provided by Ubuntu and other linux distros, and they fit just fine in packages directly...09:35
cladIf they are so paranoid about distributing the software their way, they could at least make sure they can do it correctly.09:36
maxbiceroot: You're confusing "archive" used in the Debian (old stuff) vs. Ubuntu (current stuff) senses - and yes, that particular set of naming conventions is rather unfortunate09:44
maxbclad: It's not wget-ing it from Adobe, it's wget-ing it from archive.canonical.com, which is in London, IIUC09:45
cladOh well, my bad then09:46
maxbIs anyone experiencing synaptics touchpads locking up under oneiric?09:46
maxbIt seems to happen shortly after login, if it happens at all09:46
cladAs a matter of fact, I did. Everything time I do a "lsusb", afterward I can't find any other solution but to reboot or use a mouse09:47
cladI can't tell you if it happens in earlier release though, I haven't used any older version on my laptop09:48
maxbHmm... lsusb doesn't seem to trigger it for me09:50
cladlsusb as user doesn't, lsusb as root does09:50
maxbyeah, tried both09:51
cladI just tried again to make sure and still happens on me.09:51
cladAnyhow, I don't have any lockup occuring by itself like you09:52

phibxrvlt, anything capable of 3d-acceleration.10:58
vltphibxr: When logging in to Ubuntu 11.04 the first time I got a message that my hardware doesn't support Unity and Ubuntu will fallback to Gnome.  I got this video card: "00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device [8086:3582] (rev 02)".10:59
vltphibxr: In 11.10 there will be Unity 2D then?10:59
phibxrvlt, no idea if that's got drivers for hardware acceleration or not. if there are non-opensource drivers available, you will get prompted after the first login to perform an automated installation of better drivers.11:00

ubottuLaunchpad bug 830911 in firefox (Ubuntu) "Firefox by default doesn't know what to do with .deb files" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/83091116:14
scotty^It could be a bug in Firefox, which is where it's currently assigned, or it could be a bug in shared-mime-info16:15
scotty^My Oneiric box is currently without network access so I can't confirm the problem yet.16:16
DanaGweird... udisks things "host key fingerprint" is an unexpected error in SSH.16:18
penguin42what's the connection between udisks and ssh?16:20
DanaGI'm using the "connect to server" thing.16:21
DanaGIt seems to be confused by the Visual Host Key.16:21
DanaGThinks it's "unexpected stderr output".16:21
mikedep333penguin42, ssh can be used by disk utility to manage disks on other nodes16:21
mikedep333it calls the udisk utility16:21
mikedep333to manage the disks16:21
penguin42really? Wow - didn't know that16:21
mikedep333penguin42, yup, it's easy to miss16:21
mikedep333it's in the disk utility file menu16:21
mikedep333(I think disk utility is also called "palimpsest" or something)16:22
mikedep333DanaG, try doing a regualar ssh session into the remote machine16:22
scotty^Any ubufox maintainers here?16:22

DanaGThat works fine.16:23
DanaGHere's the error text in udisks:16:23
penguin42mikedep333: Hmm that's pretty neat16:23
DanaGError connecting to "microserver".  An error occurred: the operation failed.  Details:16:23
mikedep333DanaG, when you do that, does it ask you to accept a fingerprint?16:23
DanaGHost key fingerprint is 03:76:56:91:43:a7:bd:48:38:02:03:e9:f7:54:7a:26+--[ECDSA  256]---+  |  .oo    .+o.    |   |  .  o  .oo+     |   | .    +o= o..    |   |  . ..E=oo . .   |   |   . o +S . .    |   |      .  .       |   |                 |   |                 |      |                 |+-----------------+16:23
DanaGI stripped line-breaks to avoid spamming the channel.16:23
mikedep333yeah16:24
DanaGSo it's thinking the Visual Host Key is an error.16:24
DanaGThat's the complete body of the "Error".16:24
mikedep333I'm not familiar with visual host keys16:24
DanaGThey're pretty nifty.16:24
mikedep333but if ssh is configured to show a message  like a visual host key every time you connect, it may be confusing disk-utility16:25
mikedep333because disk-utility probably isn't parsing it correctly16:25
* penguin42 isn't entirely sure what permissions he has on hsi remote machine that lets him do that! 16:25
DanaGalso, whoever decided to name the actual binary "parchment that's been erased and rewritten", and yet leave the package named gnome-disk-utility?16:26
penguin42hey?16:26
DanaGI actually had to do dpkg-listfiles the first time I ran that tool, to find the actual binary's name.16:26
DanaGBecause it's darn well not gnome-disk-utility.16:26
DanaGIt's "palimpsest".16:26
penguin42ah yes - probably seemed like a good name at the time....16:27
DanaGYeah, but they should've symlinked it.16:27
DanaGOr something.16:27
mikedep333DanaG, palimpsest has a deaper meaning16:27
mikedep333*deeper16:27
mikedep333it refers to multiple layers of culture in a society16:27
DanaGStill, apt-get install gnome-disk-utility.  I then expect to run gnome-disk-utility.  =þ16:27
mikedep333just as a disk can have multiple layers in terms of extended partitions, lvm, etc16:27
penguin42DanaG: A symlink would cost very little!16:27
mikedep333DanaG, I do agree16:27
mikedep333definitely symlink it16:28

ThomasWaldmannhalf my fault. it was missing the mp3 codec stuff16:42
ThomasWaldmannwhen manually adding that radio station, it'll tell that the codec is missing. but it won't tell if you start it from the browser.16:43
ThomasWaldmann(i installed using the alternate cd and did not have network at install time)16:44
ThomasWaldmannnow gnome-codec-install crashed X)16:44

ThomasWaldmanni just installed latest updates + the mp3 codec.16:47
DanaGOkay, even weirder: running palimpsest directly on the server DOES show SMART as supported.16:48
sammyso lets say I add an oneiric deb-src line to my sources.list. then I use apt-get -b source -t oneiric packagename. what are the possible pitfalls? the package i'm building still has a control file, but is that just for when the package is finished building, and there's no dependency checking done before the build, say, when I do 'apt-get build-dep pakagename' first?16:48
penguin42sammy: I don't think it will check much16:49
penguin42sammy: An oddment I saw yesterday was I built an oneiric source package on a recent Debian and it gave a load of warnings during the dpkg-buildpackage about being unable to parse dependencies - erm and seemed to build fine; I've got a nasty feeling it ignored most of them :-)16:50
ArnoldHello everyone.16:50
sammypenguin42: but when you tried to install it, the control file is still there and filled out, shouldnt the install have failed?16:51
penguin42sammy: When I installed the package I think it read the control file and parsed it correctly, I think it was just a build issue for build dependencies16:51
sammypenguin42: I guess I'm not seeing the point of using apt-get to ever build that way from a newer repository, then16:51
sammypenguin42: if it does no dependency checking, whats the point of having that feature built into apt if it will 'AlmostAlways' create dependency isues16:52
penguin42sammy: I guess if you're back porting a lot it might be the easiest way, not much in it16:52
sammyhm. lame.16:52
ArnoldHas anyone noticed Compiz taking slightly more memory when you're using a proprietary driver, rather than the open source one?16:52
sammyso I can use dget to get a sid package, but then I'm on my own to manually check the dependencies from the control file before using dpkg-buildpackage and installing it. got it. that seems like a waste :P16:53
penguin42sammy: I think it should check the dependencies16:53
penguin42Arnold: I don't use any prop ones, but that could be a lot of reasons for that - e.g. the prop ones may say they have extra features and Unity might end up using them16:53
sammywait, wouldn't apt-get build-dep snag the dependencies? and then complain if certain depdencies were in the newer repo?16:53
sammy(assuming I only added the deb-src)16:54
penguin42sammy: Yes it should16:54
penguin42sammy: The other thing to watch out for is any changes made for multiarch in Oneiric, not sure what older stuff will think of that16:55
sammypenguin42: I'm actually trying this with a package from sid16:55
sammy*ducks*16:55
penguin42sammy: It's got a fair chance - remember sid's unstable :-)16:55
sammypenguin42: I know, thanks for the heads up :) the app is certainly stable, its a minor bugfix release on their end, debian/ubuntu stable is a few released behind, as it should be, to allow adequate testing I guess and all. but I trust the stability of the new version.16:56
penguin42nod16:57
sammyI fear this backporting process is something many people do regularly, I just lack any coherent documentation on how to do it, probably because no one wants to walk linux/debian newbs through the process if they don't know how apt/dependencies etc work16:57
penguin42sammy: It's sometimes worth checking the Ubuntu packages to see what changes (if any) Ubuntu made - e.g. to fix ubuntu issues16:57
sammypenguin42: there are actually a few patches applied in the current version that are fixed upstream in the new version. almost all of them, in fact.16:57
penguin42sammy: You might want to try #ubuntu-packaging for help as well16:57
ArGGu^^hello, When I try to install libxml2:i386 it wants to remove a lot of packages. One of them is libxml2 64bit package.16:58

sammythanks :)16:58

jtaylorno its not been converted to multiarch yet17:00
bjsniderArGGu^^, that is the expected behaviour17:00

jtaylorsystem monitor is no good benchmarking tool17:01

ArGGu^^bjsnider it removing libxml2 64bit is expected behaviour?17:01

vltHello. I want to install pkg "ubuntu-desktop" on a plain debootstrapped Ubuntu 11.10 install but I get 4 broken packages. Any idea how to solve this?17:43
vltThe pkgs are libgd2-xpm, libgd2-noxpm, libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio, libsdl1.2debian-alsa17:45
MkaysiDoes anyone else have problem that X doesn't start automatically and you must go to TTY1 and login and run "startx" or is it just me?17:49
penguin42Mkaysi: Just you :-)17:50
penguin42Mkaysi: Do you have  one of gdm/lightdm/kdm installed?17:50
MkaysiIt can also be this MacBook or that that I accidentally halted while upgrade to 11.10 was running17:50
penguin42Mkaysi: Oh, the later17:51
penguin42Mkaysi: That's not going to be happy17:51
Mkaysipenguin42: gdm or maybe lightdm depending on did that upgrade install / remove either of them.17:51
penguin42Mkaysi: Try doing apt-get install ubuntu-desktop lightdm    and see what happens17:51
Mkaysipenguin42: It was reconfiguring openjade or something and that took over hour and then I halted17:51
MkaysiOk17:51
MkaysiE: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.17:52
MkaysiOk, I will run that now17:52
penguin42Mkaysi: You're probably going to have a whole load of weird issues - stopping an install/upgrade is always trouble17:53
Mkaysipenguin42: At least I will not get bored if I have issues :)17:53
MkaysiYou should always look at good things in problems too17:54
penguin42Mkaysi: The problem is some will be just due to the screwed up install - so keep an eye out17:55
Mkaysipenguin42: Upgrading was running configuring so I think that it's not so critical17:55
MkaysiAnd I think that that configuring was crashed before halting17:56
thoegerHi folks17:59
thoegerI have a problem or two after an upgrade-from-disk (my older upgrade-from-web system got somehow borked and stopped working).18:00
penguin42describe the problem18:01
thoegerMy Ubuntu session simply doesn't start properly. When I go to a Ubuntu2D session and then run Unity --replace from within it, it works fine, but then afterwards I have to kill unity2d-launcher and unity2d-panel manually, which is a sorta cumbersone way to log into my session...18:01
thoeger...Maybe I need to somehow reset my Ubuntu session settings to default, is that possible?18:02

boodroscotchHello all.18:15
boodroscotchI have just done a fresh install of Oneiric from th latest daily build, and the display always screws up when I boot up.18:16
boodroscotchIt boots up fine from the LiveCD, though, with Unity 3D18:17
boodroscotchI have a Radeon HD 6970, if it's any help.18:17

meerkatswill the new libreoffice be able to read and write .docs natively?18:33
meerkatsi mean .docx18:33
* penguin42 thinks I've read .docx with it18:33
* yofel is pretty sure he did too18:36
* Daekdroom is pretty sure LibreOffice can read and write .docx18:38
DaekdroomHowever, it might not be as compatible to MS Office as you wish, given .docx changed a little since it was first used.18:38
DaekdroomFor example, these days I saved a .docx in LibreOffice and tried opening it in MS Office 2003 to only see it not recognize it as a valid file.18:40
DaekdroomI suppose that happens between different MS Office versions too.18:41
bjsniderwas this experiment done in oneiric?18:44
penguin42could 2003 read .docx?18:46
* penguin42 is thinking .docx was newer but isn't sure 18:47
bjsnidernot without a plugin18:47
bjsniderdocx was shoehorned in with office 200718:47
bjsnidercould be the plugin for office 2003 was out of date18:48
DaekdroomYes, it was done in Oneiric.18:49
Daekdroomand yes, it had a .docx plugin.18:49
Daekdroom(the MS Office 2003 copy)18:49
bjsnideris it the newest version?18:49
DaekdroomNo idea.18:49
bjsnidercan office 2007/10 read the resulting file?18:50
DaekdroomI can't test it.18:50
bjsniderwell, you might have a point, but i think those issues have to be resolved first18:50
DaekdroomWell, I think there's more than one type of .docx file.18:50
bjsniderlibre might be creating the newest revision, and your 2003 plugin is too old to read it18:51
DaekdroomIt must be using the revision that became the standard along with OpenDocument.18:52
Mkaysi"dpkg --configure -a" fixed every issue :D19:02

tar-gzHi how i can change language to polish in 11.1019:08
jbichatar-gz: run System Settings and choose Language Support then click Install/Remove Languages...19:09
tar-gzjbicha: and i can't mark "polski" in menu19:10
K4kI recently installed the xubuntu-desktop package and when I'm in an xfce4 session I'm unable to launch xfce4-power-manager-settings. The error I receive is xfce4-power-manager is not running, start [no] [yes] and I select yes, try again, still nothing. I tried launching xfce4-power-manager from terminal and did not receive any errors but I get the same message at the settings screen. Anyone have any ideas?19:10
tar-gzMaybe i need restart?19:11
jbichatar-gz: you have to drag polski above English on the Language Support screen19:11
jbichathe UI is a bit confusing and will be improved in 6 months when Ubuntu 12.04 is released19:12
tar-gzjbicha: ;-) how i can mart thats? When i click mouse i can't see diference19:18
K4kfiles in /etc/xdg/autostart will autostart with xfce correct? Just trying to think through why the power-manager isn't starting...19:19
jbichaK4k: it depends; open the files and look for an OnlyShowIn: line19:23
K4kDoesn't appear to have that line19:24
tar-gz;-(19:24
tar-gzHow i can change this language?19:24
K4kjbicha: actualy, I lied, it's there it says XFCE;19:24
jbichaK4k: then yes it should work19:24
jbichawhat wouldn't work are the OnlyShowIn:GNOME;Unity; ones19:25
K4kjbicha: do you happen to know what log files xfce4-power-manager writes to?19:25
jbichaK4k: no sorry I don't really use XFCE, try #xubuntu or an xfce-specific channel19:27
K4kah, --no-daemon seems to show somethings19:27
charlie-tcaK4k: if you have both xfce4-power-manager and gnome-power-manager installed, they conflict19:28
K4kOk, thanks for the info, do you know if it's file conflict or process conflict? I don't have gnome-power-manager currently running.19:29
K4k--no-daemon gave me some error messages I'm going to try in #xubuntu19:30
MkaysiWeird. When I click external hard drive in unity panel, it tries to open it in Gedit instead of Nautilus19:39
ThomasWaldmannis there something unusual with vim in 11.10?19:50
ThomasWaldmanni guess i always get the minimal one, although i have installed the normal one and updated alternatives19:51
ThomasWaldmannto be more precise, i call it from mc with F4 (and configured to use external editor)19:52
ThomasWaldmannah, found it. it needs export EDITOR=/usr/bin/vim somehow, otherwise it calls vim.tiny(?). maybe a better idea would be to call "editor"?19:53

leniosyes20:31
lenioswith (hopefully) good files20:31

thoegerbjsnider, hmm there is a lot of warnings from unity-2d-launcher....20:42

FernandoMiguelhi20:43
thoegerbjsnider, I don't think it's a graphics issue, 3d accel works fine in pretty much any other session than mine20:44
bjsnider.xsession-errors or dmesg should have enough info to troubleshoot20:45
krutoileshiinow let's see if i could make a dkms package package out of it20:45
thoegerbjsnider, I'm not too sklilled readin ghose though. But I have a thought; could it be that I somewhere have a compiz config file that asks it to load plugins that are no longer installed?20:49
bjsniderthoeger, how about this. try to start a unity session from the login screen, and when you get as far as it takes you, go to a vt, and run DISPLAY=:0 unity20:54

bjsnideryeah, you could nuke your compiz config20:55
thoegerOkay, going out and back in...20:58
thoegerbjsnider, unfortunately still no result21:15
thoegerWhere can I look to debug, again?21:15
bjsnideryeah but there must be some useful information being communicated21:16
thoegerIt doesn't look like X doesn't start properly, rather that something else is blocking the session/login sequence...21:16
thoegerSure thing... Trying to run unity as you said, I got a segmentation fault21:16
bjsnideroh, that's helpful21:17
thoegerbjsnider, sorry, was that sarcasm...?21:17

bjsniderthoeger, ok, try the previous process except killall unity forst, in case it's already running, and run it with unity -v, and i suppose if you do $>unity_errata on the end it will capture the result in a file21:20
bjsniderand also you should probably wipe out any compiz settings21:21

thoegerbut there was little else but the complaints about the missing plugin files in the ~/.compiz-1 folder21:40
dupondjereally have no idea how to set the correct locale :(21:46

dupondjeqin: that won't change the fact I'm unable to change the locale21:57
dupondjeor there is no gui to remove wireless networks21:57
dupondjeor that the text length is hardcoded and just to short ...21:57

thoegerbjsnider, still have this weird problem that the unity2d-panel doesn't seem to obey the opacity settings from the compiz Unity plugin... it's all very frustrating22:17
bjsniderthoeger, maybe there's someone in #ayatana that can help22:17
bjsnideri'm sure it's a userland config issue22:18
thoegerbjsnider, okay, thank you so far22:18
BluesKajBBL ..dinner22:27
thoegerbjsnider, okay I nuked my .gconf and .config folders, that worked.22:36
thoegerSo now I need to redo some settings but so be it22:37
bjsnideruserland config files22:37
bjsniderby rule, packages cannot modify anything owned by the user, so they get left behind even if they contain settings that are disastrously wrong22:38
jbichathoeger: it might have been interesting to know what specifically broke, but at least it's fixed for you :)22:38
thoegerjbicha, yeah I know but I also need a working system... :-)22:41
jbichathoeger: I just meant if you had extra time, you could have moved .gconf and .config instead of removing them, but no worries22:44
thoegerjbicha, I did in fact move them rather than kuking them22:44
thoegernuking*22:44
bjsnidercould also have focused on the compiz subfolders instead of the whole thing22:45
thoegerI never delete that kinda stuff until I'm sure it works without them22:45
jbichabjsnider: shouldn't unity --reset have reset the compiz settings?22:45
thoegerbjsnider, sure thing... It's getting late here so patience is getting a little thin...22:45
bjsniderjbicha, hey man, don't ax me. i'm a gnome-shell kinda guy22:46
bjsniderbut it seems like the two are separate22:46
bjsniderbut i think the reset commands should be extended to compiz if it isn't22:47
carl0s-Is there a specific knack to getting the side bar menu thing to appear? It's not just a simple case of putting the mouse to the left of the screen is it? Do I have to put it to the left and make sure I don't hold it there or or something? It often won't come out anyway. It's certainly not intuitive. What's it thinking and how can I deal with that?22:53
carl0s-(it always comes out if I hit Super, but then the app searcher menu comes out too.. although since one of the recent updates at least that doesn't mean I can't used the menu icons.22:54
thoegerbjsnider, jbicha I'm pretty sire it does.22:56
bjsniderwhat?22:57
bjsnideri think what jbicha is getting at is that you used the --reset command and it wasn't good enough to fix you problem. that is a flaw in the command, since it is supposed to fix the exact problem you had22:59
carl0s-more often than not I have firefox maximized. That's when the, erm, unity menu/doc bar thing won't appear unless I hit Super.22:59
thoegerOkay completely different question. After resetting my config folders, all of a sudden I get a Ubiquity icon in the unity launcher, saying "install RELEASE"... Is this the proper way to upgrade to final from Beta?23:00
Daekdroomthoeger, nope23:00
thoegerbjsnider, except if the problem was somewhere else, which is what I suspect.23:00
carl0s-thoeger, I've had that sat here for ages too.. it's like the icon is supposed to be there when using the LiveCD, except I'm not using the LiveCD.23:01
thoegerDaekdroom, okay thanks, what I suspected.23:01
thoegercarl0s-, exactly. Away it goes, got othing to do there.23:01
Daekdroomthoeger, what I find odd is that ubiquity is not even part of the system once you install it.23:01
thoegerDaekdroom, seems very much to be here...23:01
thoeger...My install DVD isn't even in the drive23:02
carl0s-nor mine23:02
bjsniderthoeger, you think the problem was a config file that's not related to unity in any way? that should not be able to stop unity23:02
carl0s-:)23:02
jbichacarl0s-: the left launcher hiding is a known "stacking" bug23:02
carl0s-jbicha, oh ok thanks. It's been like this for some time but I'm glad it's a known bug23:02
jbichasometimes resetting Unity is enough to get the launcher to show normally23:02
jbichaI do Alt-F2 unity23:03
Daekdroomthoeger, you may as well uninstall ubiquity package.23:03
DaekdroomIt's not a ubuntu-desktop recommend, so it's really not meant to be installed.23:03
Daekdroom(unless you did it manually, which I believe you didn't)23:03
thoegerDaekdroom, yeah probably a good idea23:03
