czajkowskiit should/could happen any time in october for 1109:05
czajkowskifixing it to a date not sure is actually working09:06
oimoni get less excited by ubuntu releases each year. i don't know if that's because i've tested the beta for months already, or that releases have been less momentous in terms of features since 10.04?09:07
andylockranczajkowski: I understand why there's a date there - but I'm not sure if there's too much focus on 'new features'09:07
andylockrani.e. LTS releases should be the rock solid stable ones09:07
andylockranthese 6 monthly releases should be considered beta of LTS releases imho09:08

MartijnVdSEverything it does, it does by design!10:29
AlanBellwhich is why the bug is against ayatana design as well :)10:30

AlanBelland on the non-unity switchers it is a configurable delay10:34
MooDoosmittix: rats foiled again10:34

AlanBelland really there is little point in the delay when quick alt-tabbing doesn't generally do something predictable anyway10:35
davmor2AlanBell: so I wonder what magic thisisthecountdown.com holds for us today10:35
BigRedSAlanBell: exactly. When I select that icon which represents six or seven different windows, it'd be nice to have some idea of which desktop I'm going to be transported to, even if I can't affect what unity decides to do there10:37

AlanBelldavmor2: it is a qr code10:38

diploI'm not against it perse the new look and working, I just find it on both releases buggy as hll13:29
freckleI find it amazing you can't get a classic desktop out of the box13:29
freckleis there a rationale to that?13:30
BigRedSfreckle: gnome 2 isn't supported any more13:30
BigRedS11.10 ships with gnome3 which is incapale of doing a gnome2 de13:30
freckleBigRedS: I understand that but why stop supporting when the alternative is a backward step in many respects13:31
diploI suppose if Gnome are not supporting 2.* then security issues etc13:31
davmor2freckle: Because it is no more?  who do you expect to support it?13:32
diploGnome/Canonical have both made the decision to move on, so whats the point in supporting it13:32
constrictorjust got an email it's alive!!!!13:32
freckleI understand all of that but I think the alternative is inferior13:32
diploWho knows, someone may fork it yet13:32
diploYep, I'm not sold.. XFCE/LXDE or use a distro that still is using 2.* ?13:33
diploOr KDE13:33
freckleI use Ubuntu for my desktop at work and Unity is a disaster in this scenario13:33
andatcheunity is a disaster full stop when multiple monitors are involved :(13:33
freckleall of my colleagues who use Ubuntu feel the same.13:33
ali1234unity is still better than anything that isn't gnome 2.x13:34
davmor2freckle: so don't use it there are plenty of options out there13:34
gordonjcpunity is actually okay once you get rid of the stupid menu-at-the-top thing, and put the window decorations back on the right side13:34
andatcheI love openbox on the desktop, but it lacks some of the convenience features I need a laptop13:34
constrictorit just inverted all my eclipse menu13:34
freckledavmor2: so what is a good desktop for triple monitors:?13:34
ali1234apparently xfce has good multimonitor support13:35
jaymeskellerUnity may be helpful in the case of netbooks/anything portable. Not on desktops, I say.13:35
gordonjcpit would be nice if it had a proper taskbar and didn't take up such a huge amount of space with that strip down the side13:35
ali1234as long as it is real multimonitor nd not twinview13:35
davmor2freckle: no idea I don't use 3 monitors13:35
constrictorso "help" comes first and "file" comes last13:35
BigRedSI really don't get that. It seems as bad to me on a desktop as anything else13:35
frecklelol413:36
jaymeskellerAnd yes, I did get the memo that 11.10 is live. Not in a hurry to upgrade though.13:36
jaymeskellerMight wait until it's settled down some.13:37
BigRedSwell, if you were in a hurry you'd have skipped the rush and done it yesterday13:37
jaymeskellerReally?13:37
BigRedSwell, the RC as it stood yesterday would be basically the same as what's just been released13:37
jaymeskellerAh. I see.13:37
BigRedSand so you'd have a minimal upgrade to do whenever everyone stops ddossing all the mirrors13:37
jaymeskellerNot to mention that bugs that were missed for whatever reason will be fixed by that time. For example, when I first got natty, it was flaky with RAID support. Now it's working fine.13:40
jaymeskellerAlthough that could have also been nvidia acting the goat again.13:41

BigRedShah. no. wrong month :)13:42
jaymeskellerMind you, there's always using a VM to road-test it. :)13:43
BigRedSwhich wouldn't catch your hardware bug13:43
jaymeskellerTrue. Then again, it's useful for testing if software I compile on a regular basis form mercurial and so on still work.13:44
jaymeskellerAlthough getting an ISO of orneric is tricky due to the aformentioned bandwith spike.13:45
jacobwtorrent13:46
jaymeskellerThat's what I thought.13:47

hcfdHi, has anyone got advice on installing Windows 7 alongside Ubuntu? I have 7 HDDs, 6 of which are Ubuntu/ext3 and ext4 RAID1 mirrors. The 7th drive I want to install Windows 7 on. I propose to use the Win7 USB installer, point at HDD#7, install, then use BIOS boot order to boot that drive. Later I will add Win7 to GRUB. Will my Ubuntu installation be fine?15:14
hcfdGRUB (and /) is on /dev/sda and /dev/sdc ... I'm guessing Win7 will not touch these drives or any of the others?15:15
ali1234install windows first15:16
ali1234if you can't install windows first, unplug all other drives to prevent windows from screwing with them15:17
hcfdWell that's my main question.. do I need to unplug the drives or not15:17
hcfdAlso, I'm on Ubuntu now (using all 6 current disks). Win7 is going on its own disk.15:18
hcfdNo MBR backup/restore needed I'm assuming.15:18
hcfdWin7 will put its own MBR on its own disk. BIOS determines which OS boots (sda or sdc = Ubuntu via GRUB, and sdX = Win7)15:18
hcfdI'm guessing Windows 7 will see the sdX drive just fine15:19
hcfdLater.. when all is working.. Win7 can be added to GRUB15:20

daftykins^_^ indeed17:19
daftykinsoh look new ubuntu - *yawn*17:20
daftykins:D17:20
MartijnVdSdaftykins: this is why I left #ubuntu-nl -- people refusing to read instructions, and then blaming me for pointing them to them ;)17:20
daftykins:D17:20
MartijnVdS("I followed the instructions, and it doesn't work." "So, did you do X Y Z?" "X Y Z?" "Yes, step 3/5 from that HOWTO I linked earlier" "...")17:21
MartijnVdS*shakes fist*17:21

scoundrel50ahow do I know if I have the correct kernel for 11.10. I didnt get the upgrade button....and it keeps telling me that there is no upgrade available18:01
scoundrel50abeen updating every day, via the terminal18:01
emorrisscoundrel50a, uname -r # should be 3.0.0-1218:07
DJonesscoundrel50a: What version of ubuntu did you have prior to the upgrade?18:08
scoundrel50ait was the beta version, I did sudo apt-get dist-upgrade this morning, really early, and since then it tells me there are no upgrades.18:09
DJonesOver the last few days, there have been very few updates because they were finalising the images18:10
scoundrel50aIt seems I am up to date, with out a huge upgrade, it says after that command I have 3.0.0-12-generic18:10
DJonesThat sounds about right18:10
scoundrel50aThat is good news I was dreading a huge upgrade18:11
scoundrel50abrilliant18:11

smittixare the mirrors getting hammered or what?18:11
smittixtrying to update a natty box and getting nowhere18:11
DJonesI would expecr they're being hammered at the minute, you could change to a different repo and try with that18:13
scoundrel50aI got the Tomboy Synch working as well, it was a simple as removing the / at the end of the url18:15
jacobwsmittix: have you got many extra packages on this natty box?18:15
smittixquite a few.18:16
smittixim begining to think its my connection now18:16
DJonesI'm just trying to get on the lubuntu site, but that must be overloaded18:22

bigcalmLaptop has just finished upgrading and rebooted. Looks nice. Opening any folder shows the archive manager which complains about not being able to handle it. Dropbox doesn't work anymore.19:28

smittix40 minutes to install vlc :(20:26
bigcalmAre you doing a fresh install?20:26
smittixyeah20:27
bigcalmIt's not really surprising that installs will take a long time tonight :)20:27
smittixheh20:27
bigcalmTurns out the dropbox updater was trying to do system stuff without asking for permission 1st. So it failed every time20:40
bigcalm"sudo dropbox update" worked from the command line20:41
bigcalmsmittix: ping20:41
bigcalmHow might I have more than 4 workspaces in Unity?20:49
mgdmso, Oneric has removed GNOME classic, correct?20:50
smittixbigcalm: does compizconfig-settings-manager have the option to add more workspaces?20:50
bigcalmmgdm: yes20:50
bigcalmcompizconfig-settings-manager: command not found20:51
smittixinstall it :)20:51
mgdmbigcalm: byebye Ubuntu, then20:51
bigcalmHeh20:51
smittixit will take 3 hours to download though20:51
bigcalmmgdm: try xfce?20:51
smittixmgdm: :( not a Unity fan then?20:51
mgdmsmittix: oh heck no20:51
emorrismgdm, if you install gnome-panel, you get the Ubuntu Classic options back20:52
mgdmbigcalm: actually if I can get LXDE I might stick with it20:52
mgdmemorris: Oh?20:52
smittixmgdm: KDE?20:52
mgdmi *detest* Unity, it's unusable for me20:52
mgdmsmittix: not a huge fan of that20:52
emorrismgdm, yeah it installs some fallback package20:52
mgdmemorris: interesting20:52
mgdmeither that or I use this Mac as my main machine20:53
mgdmwhich i'd rather not20:53
mgdm(I am no longer interested in the politics of free software/OSS - RMS has put paid to that)20:54
mgdmI don't want to be associated with a movement with him at the head of it20:54
emorrisFOSS OTTness annoys me20:55
bigcalmI won't be updating my workstation any time soon as Unity won't be able to cope with 3 screens20:55
bigcalmJust about works so far on my laptop though20:55
mgdmbigcalm: does it cope with 2?20:56
bigcalmUn-maximising everything is a good start20:56
bigcalmmgdm: the version on 11.04 didn't do what I needed20:56
bigcalmmgdm: I'm slightly unusual in that I have my central screen (2nd) rotated 90deg. So no defaults will ever work for me :)20:57
mgdmbigcalm: heh20:58
bigcalmI _have_ to have my workstation working. So testing the waters on my laptop20:58
bigcalmWonder how the eeeeeeeepc 1000 would do with 11.1020:58
smittixi dont like it how the appearance menu has gone20:59
smittixso changing font sizes and themes is more of a pain20:59
mgdmCan I install GNOME 3's shell on Ubuntu?20:59
bigcalmYou have to search for everything now20:59
bigcalmYes, it'll work propperly with 11.1020:59
mgdmIf I can do that, I might be able to tolerate it20:59
smittixi installed gnome-tweak-tool to just change the fonts :/20:59
bigcalmWill have a look at Gnome 3 in a bit20:59

Myrttidumdidum21:21
Andres-kainbigcalm i guess the basic things really. for a user that uses firefox and little more21:38
bigcalmThen upgrade whenever you want. Consider that you'll be providing the support though :)21:41
Andres-kaini'll need to upgrade my machine as well. just to know where things are.21:44
jacobwi think i prefer unity in natty :s21:52
zleapit will be nice when the ubuntu manual is updated (if ever) so new and i mean new users have a good reference for how to use stuff21:57
bigcalmWould be good if that were to happen in time for the 12.04 LTS21:59
