tkamppeterWhen will the kernel SRU for Oneiric be ready, for example to fix bug 872711 which prevents half of the USB printers not being detected?06:27
ubot2Launchpad bug 872711 in linux "Kernel does not report some USB printers correctly, making them not being detected by CUPS" [High,Fix committed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/87271106:27
smbmorning .+07:39
aboganismb: morning07:41
* apw yawns07:44
apwtkamppeter, i would expect it to be uploaded very soon though that is now in the hands of the stable team and their cycles07:46
* apw has to reboot ...08:02
gentoo_drummeranyone here?09:30
gentoo_drummerhas anyone tried ubuntu 11.10 command line installation under vbox? i get to a blinking underscore screen forever09:33
smbgentoo_drummer, Have not tried vbox. But done an alternate installation under kvm and xen...09:35
smbgentoo_drummer, you got past the syslinux boot screen I assume? Or when does it get stuck?09:36
gentoo_drummersmb: i get past the ubuntu 11.10 splash screen and then it stays on the underscore forever09:38
gentoo_drummer10.10 works though09:38
gentoo_drummerhow do i do a distupgrade to oneiric?09:38
gentoo_drummerjust put oneiric-ocelot in apt.sources and then dist-upgrade?09:38
TeTeTgentoo_drummer: sudo do-release-upgrade09:39
smbgentoo_drummer, You could try to remove the quiet and splash words from the opetions and see what happens then09:39
TeTeTgentoo_drummer: or, from GUI, update-manager09:39
smbor do as TeTeT said for updating, will take you through 11.04 though09:39
gentoo_drummerhow can i get to verbose through grub boot screen?09:40
smbgentoo_drummer, When you boot from cd, there is one key for options (f6 or so but not sure), then escape and edit the line. It has "quiet splash" which when removed gives you verbose09:41
gentoo_drummersmb: i mean when pressing "c" to get to the grub boot screen09:42
gentoo_drummeris there a command to boot in verbose from there?09:43
apwgentoo_drummer, sadly not, you have to jump through several hoops09:43
gentoo_drummergosh09:44
apwyou have to change the =$foo bit to =text09:44
smbgentoo_drummer, for the kernel you want to boot its e09:44
apwthen on the command line remove quiet and splash and add debug09:44
smbthen edit the line there to remove the quiet and splash09:44
smband then ctrl-x to boot it09:44
Kanoapw: is rc10 building now? was tagged 6h ago?10:54
Kanoor same problem like with daily?10:54
apwwe only check at 9am UTC so it would have started about then if it was ready by then10:54
Kanowell it was tagged before 9 utc10:55
apwthen its in the build queue, looks like there was another stable release too which gets done first10:56
Kanoah which one?10:56
apwv3.0.710:56
Kanoah10:56
Kanowith dvb fixes?10:56
apwif they are in mainline10:57
Kanoyou didnt add the 3 patches i showed you, did you?10:57
apwto the mainline builds, no, they are what they say they are, virgin unchanged mainline builds10:58
apwfor them to have random patches on top would not make any sense for our use case10:58
Kanono for your o release ernel10:58
apwthe release kernel no, it was frozen already10:59
Kano3.0.7 misses em too as i see11:00
apwupstream stable isn't being fed very well it seems11:00
Kanodo you intend to base a kernel on 3.0.7?11:01
apwyep, most likey we'll upload a 3.0.6 plus fixes shortly, and then the next cycle will have 3.0.611:02
apw711:02
Kanowhy dont skip 3.0.6?11:02
apwcause what we have has had some time to settle and there is always a new one on the horizon11:03
apwnot that it is my call at the end of the day, but there is little point in rushing out stuff11:03
apwas they normally find problems in one update and produce a fix for it11:04
Kanook, any estimate for 3.0.7?11:04
apwa couple of weeks or so11:07
apwherton, hey ... has anyone formally handed over the oneiric kernel to you in stable ?11:08
hertonapw: yep, steve talked to leann yesterday11:08
apwherton, ok good ... we need to keep in mind there is an lts-backport for it too which needs uploading as well11:09
apwherton, where are we in the cycle for stable, we likely should push the update for oneiric sooner than later as there is already a heap of stable on there11:10
Kanoapw: whats the reason that rc kernels are not written as ~rc11:12
hertonapw: the first oneiric update is in progress now (bug 876701), will take care of lts-backport as well11:12
ubot2Launchpad bug 876701 in linux "linux: 3.0.0-13.21 -proposed tracker" [Medium,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/87670111:12
Kanoin the version11:12
Kanorc is always newer than first release kernel with mainline builds11:12
apwherton, you are a star -- thanks a lot11:12
apwKano, never thought about it, the names are only meant to be unique as they are 'install, test and remove' kernels not intended for longterm use nor do we provide any updateable sources11:13
Kanowell maybe kanotix users test more of our mainline build than yours ;)11:14
apwmaybe, maybe11:14
Kanoi basically like pure kernels, custom patches needed to fix something is always annoying11:16

ogasawaraapw: I suspect we'll only have a handful of specs for UDS which need an actual meeting slot, I wonder if we should spread them out over the week rather than monopolizing a single day13:31
apwogasawara, other than the version flavours discussion i suspect they can float forward13:32
apwi think the plan with putting them together was to allow the rest of the week for us to go to things13:32
apwbut actually that really doesn't make any difference where they are13:33
apwfriday afternoons is often prep for party time as well13:33
ogasawaraapw: I'm guessing we're only going to have 4 (config, delta, version, stable), so was thinking to just schedule 1 per day13:34
apwcan't see anything wrong with that13:34
ogasawaraherton: I assume you or bjf will be having a stable kernel blueprint for UDS? or are you guys pretty much just turning the crank now and don't need to work out further details?13:35
apwi am sure there will be people wanting to input on it13:37
hertonyes, probably will be good to have at least one session13:37
hertonogasawara: I'll wait bjf to show up and see with him13:42
ogasawaraherton: ack13:42
bjfoh mistress of the dark, i hear you have questions13:48
ogasawarahehe13:50
ogasawarabjf: was just assuming you and herton would want to have a stable kernel session at UDS?13:50
bjfogasawara: blueprint wise .. though we are just turning the crank i think we are expected to do a uds session so that people can have somewhere to whine13:50
ogasawarabjf: heh was assuming it would be more of a bitch session13:51
bjfogasawara: we'll nod and tell everyone we will take their input seriously .. and then do what we want13:51
smbbjf, Will you play some annoying music as well?13:51
bjfogasawara: just the usual13:51
bjfsmb, i'll put that on the list13:52
ogasawarabjf: ok, I'll throw a stub blueprint together for you guys to fill in later and throw it in the schedule13:52
smbCool, then we feel just as with any support line... :)13:52
bjfograsawara, "state of the cadence" kind of thing13:52
bjfogasawara: are we "other-p-kernel-*" ?13:57
ogasawarabjf: "hardware-p-kernel-*"13:57
bjfogasawara: nice that there is a "kernel" track which we are not allowed to use :-)13:58
bjfi guess only linaro has kernel issues13:58
ogasawarabjf: you want me to assign you or bjf to this blueprint13:59
ogasawarabjf: heh, you or herton13:59
bjfogasawara: me please14:00

apwbjf, nice lets go for that14:39
apwbjf, actually or .... poolbar-p-kernel14:39
bjfgema, it's in my contract "required to complain, bitch, whine"14:39
apw"like a grumpy old man"14:40
* gema goes to check her contract, being QA she expect to have even more rights than bjf...14:40
gemabtw, bjf do you guys run any kind of static code analyser on the kernel?14:42
bjfhahaha ha ha HA!14:42
gemaI will take that as a no :D14:42
smbnot us as such, but isn't that coccinelle thing somehting like that?14:43
apwthat more happens upstream yes, on the raw kernel14:43
bjfgema: actually, i do think there are static analyzers that upstream does14:43
gemasmb, apw, bjf: but if they are run upstream, we don't benefit from then in our specific bits of the kernel, right?14:44
bjfgema: our kernel differences are very minor in reality14:45
smbno, thats why we try to keep our bits as small as possible (amongst other)14:45
* bjf not sure he likes the implication that the kernel team has tiny bits14:45
gemabjf, smb: thanks! 14:46
smbbjf, aren't we always told size does not matter? ;-P14:46
bjfsmb, they just tell us that to make us feel better, but they lie14:46
bjfgema: http://lwn.net/Articles/208312/14:48
bjfgema, i knew linux had written one14:49
gemabjf: thanks!14:49
* herton -> lunch15:06
apwBAH unity just stopped updating my laptop screen like it was hung15:07
apwonly cause i could see my external monitor could i tell it was actually just that screen15:07
apwogasawara, are you ready for precise kernels to be uploaded to pre-proposed ?15:11
ogasawaraapw: just about, I want to make a quick tweak to the VIRTIO bits you pointed out (ie disable except for -virtual), and I want to rebase to -rc1015:11
apwogasawara, so i can add them for tommorrow 15:12
ogasawaraapw: yep15:12

jsalisburyogasawara, bjf, I'm seeing lots of new possible duplicates for bug 836250 and many people are reporting as affecting them ( /me included ;-) ) 15:45
ubot2Launchpad bug 836250 in network-manager "[Oneiric] Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 poor networking, packet loss and very slow Lenovo X201 and T500 laptops" [High,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/83625015:45
ogasawarajsalisbury: so are you able to test a few things, like boot back into a Natty kernel and confirm it's not an issue?15:49
jsalisburyogasawara, I could give that a try, but I may have to do it later since its my primary laptop15:50
jsalisburyogasawara, I can also ask others affected by this to try Natty15:51
ogasawarajsalisbury: ack.  I also thought tgardner did some extensive wifi testing but he wasn't able to reproduce a lot of these issues.15:51
jsalisburyogasawara, yes, I did see that thread15:51
DBOjjohansen, so I am still running into issues with the rtl8192ce module. I found that if I do ips=0 that *seems* to fix it (hard to tell). Should I report this any further or just modify my machine and move on?15:52
* apw notes they are lenovo's ... they are always troublesome15:52
jjohansenDBO: it would be good if you could file a bug, and add that information15:53
* jjohansen is going to have to try that as well, and see if it works for me15:53
DBOso now I have to ask a somewhat silly question15:53
DBOhow can I make this permanent (rather than just use modprobe)15:53
apw/etc/modprobe.d contains various files which have examples, you could make a new file there in a similar form15:54
hertonppisati: bug 877497 is the correct one to be worked on linux-ti-omap4 update for oneiric, the other ones I already closed (should be ignored)15:55

DBOjjohansen, 20 minutes and no disconnects so far, this is pretty much a record for me16:05
DBO:)16:05
DBOstill replacing the card... but no rush nwo :)16:05
jjohansenDBO: nice16:05
ppisatiherton: yep, saw it16:10
ogasawarabjf: I assume you're aware the daily bug report email is stuck on Friday Oct 1416:13
bjfogasawara: no, will look into it though16:13
DBOjjohansen, false alarm, it might have improved it for a bit, but it just did it again :/16:32
jjohansenDBO: :(16:32
DBOjjohansen, https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=72961816:33
DBOthat looks interesting16:33
ubot2bugzilla.redhat.com bug 729618 in kernel "rtl8192ce reloads firmware all the time" [High,New]16:35
jjohansenDBO: hrmm, interesting16:39

bjft3_: cool, let us know if it doesn't19:59
t3_bjf: will do, ttyl20:00
twbI'm a bit confused; I git cloned the lucid kernel repo, copied the .config from /boot of a lucid box, did a "make deb-pkg", installed it, did a "update-initramfs -c -k xxx".  The resulting ramdisk was 71MB where it should've been more like 13MB23:03
twbI noticed that the -Os option was off in .config, but AFAIK it was like that already; I didn't mess with it.23:03
twbI suppose the other likely thing I did different, was compiling on hardy23:06
twbBuilding it with -Os doesn't help; the resulting ramdisk is 68MB23:26
twbWTF, man.23:26
twbI'll try building it inside a lucid chroot (hence gcc 4.4 or so)23:27
jjohansentwb: did you strip it?23:30
twbNot explicitly, but IME make deb-pkg does that for me23:31
twbI'll check23:31
twbAh, good catch23:31
twbSo why didn't it strip them?  Is it just that the 2.6.32 kernel predates that feature in the deb-pkg approach?23:36
