toshaSAIdea. Develop to the main system that when an application is run, it checks what that application is with a server. the server returns all packages to the client to make sure that the application will run. This will benefit when running .Net throu wine. E.g.... Running COD4, it retrieves the wine package, Directx.dlls and then executes.06:35
nigelbLaney: ping, around?06:35
pittithere, all SRU queues empty again *phew*06:39
nigelbpitti: *applause* :)06:39
ChipzztoshaSA: in one word, HORRIBLE. real solution: package the application. EOT06:40
RAOFtoshaSA: To some extent that's what winetricks does; that's packaged in the archive and wine Recommends it.  To turn it into a general-purpose solution you'd end up doing essentially the same work as packaging the app.06:45
Chipzzbut his solution ends up reinventing apt. we already have apt.06:47

Laibschpitti: SRU queue is empty?  what's missing in bug 508545? I thought I had completed all the necessary steps for it to enter the queue...07:37

pittiLaibsch: by "queue" I just meant stuff that was uploaded, but needs processing by SRU team07:48
Laibschmvo: thanks.  By the way aptitude in oneiric and precise does not load changelogs with C.  There's a ticket so I guess you already know about it.  Just wanted to raise awareness of bugs dear to my hear, hehe.07:49

Laibschmvo: unfortunately, no.  And I don't even have a workaround inside aptitude.  The program does seem to actually download the log, I believe, but somehow fails to display it.07:54

jamespageis syncpackage --no-lp ... the right way todo fakesyncs?  I have a few I need to deal with due to inconsistent generation of .orig.tar.gz's from github13:02
Davieyjamespage: no, that still won't work.13:03
Davieyoh, maybe it will.13:04
jamespageits the advice from syncpackage when it encounters one - but there is a WARNING in the man page about using it13:04
Laneydiscouraged unless necessary13:04
tumbleweedjamespage: --no-lp is the right way, yes13:04
Laneywhich it sometimes is, like for fakesyncs13:04
Davieyjamespage: The warning is due to possible breakage in the users hands..13:05
DavieyI didn't know syncpackage could handle fakesync's.. i thought you had to do it manually.13:05
jamespagegreat - thanks for the guidance13:06
tumbleweedyeah the warning is for people using syncpackage for non-fake syncs13:06
Laneythat sounds annoying though; can you write a get-orig-source to avoid it in future?13:06
tumbleweedwhenever there's a get-orig-source and we leapfrog debian, there are going to be mismatches13:07
Laneynot if it gives you identical output13:07
Laneysounds like using github is almost guaranteed to give you mismatches13:07
tumbleweedthat too13:07
tumbleweedget-orig-source normally does some kind of repackaing, which will never give you identical output13:08
Laneyno reason why it can't13:08
jamespageLaney, tumbleweed: took me a while to figure out that github was doing this13:08
Laneydirecthex figured out the runes some time ago13:08
directhexsnuh?13:08
Laneyinvolves gzip -n and tar --mtime iirc13:08
Laneyfor deterministic get-orig-source13:09
directhexoh, yes13:09
tumbleweedLaney: can we document that somewhere?13:09
jamespageit would be great if it could be added to the uscan man page - it has a specific section about using the github redirector so would fix nicely there13:09
* tumbleweed added my list of gotchas to the repacking section of the packaging guide (back when it was on the wiki)13:10
jamespageI've tried to avoid this happening by using git to maintain my Debian package branches13:11
Laneypristine-tar takes care of it for you, indeed13:11
jamespageand storing the .orig.tar.gz alongside the source and packaging branches13:11
Laneyyou just need to make sure that debian use an identical orig if they upload second13:12
jamespagebut it relies on the DD that sponsors my upload using that rather than get-orig-source13:12
Laneyboth using a properly deterministic get-orig-source is one way of achieving this, pristine-tar is another13:12
jamespageusing both covers both bases13:12

cjwatsonlooks plausible enough from a quick scan13:37
barrycjwatson: thanks.  i guess that's what bug reports are for, right? :)13:38
tumbleweedbarry: why are we making the symbols optional, why not remove them?13:38
cjwatsonugh, has that symbols file not heard of (c++)13:38
cjwatsontumbleweed: it would make the patch submittable to Debian13:39
barrytumbleweed: because in debian, there are using (optional) all over the place, so i followed suit13:39
barrycjwatson: i wonder if debian would want this patch since it's purely a result of our main/universe b-d policy13:40
tumbleweedbarry: fair enough I see what you muean13:41

xtianhi everyone. i'm seeing a funny behaviour with ubuntu/precise. have set up a precise chroot (amd64) on an amd64 host16:57
xtian...using debootstrap --arch=amd6416:58
xtianchrooted into it, added few sources, updated, selected a bunch of packages (~100), and ran apt-get upgrade16:59
xtiannow apt would try to install i386 packages randomly, for about half of the packages selected16:59
xtianremoved 'foreign-architecture i386' from /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg.d/multiarch, re-ran apt, now everything is installed as amd6417:00
xtiandid not see this with oneiric, even though the i386 multiarch entry was also there17:00

xtian(i've been redirected here from #ubuntu)17:15
cjwatsonxtian: it may be transient due to i386 and amd64 builds not necessarily being in perfect sync at the moment17:16
cjwatsonwhich is slightly inevitable with development releases although unfortunate17:16
cjwatsonxtian: do you have specific examples that are going wrong at the moment?17:16
cjwatsonI kind of think apt-get shouldn't pick foreign-arch packages to satisfy explicit requests, but I can't remember what the spec says ...17:17
cjwatsonslangasek might have a better handle on that17:17
xtiancjwatson: yeah, apt was picking i386, although amd64 packages were available17:17
xtiancjwatson: after removing the multiarch entry for i386, everything went fine17:18
cjwatsonavailable but perhaps not installable17:18
cjwatsondo you have specific examples?17:18
xtiancjwatson: not at the moment, i could do it again (afresh) and post the result17:18
xtiancjwatson: would take a little whilre17:19
cjwatsonyep.  you might find the results changing from hour to hour at the moment, of course17:19
xtiancjwatson: should i open a bug for that17:19
cjwatsonit probably wouldn't hurt, although I don't know how immediately addressable it would be17:19
xtiancjwatson: okay, if it is not a bug in apt/dpkg, then i'm not worired17:19
xtian*worried17:19
cjwatsonit sounds like a misfeature at least17:19
cjwatsonalthough I don't know if it's fixable without breaking other things we rely on17:20
xtian...in the light of the respective amd64 packages available and installable, a misfeature, yes :)17:21
cjwatson(e.g. smooth transitions of biarch/traditional -> multiarch)17:21
cjwatsonxtian: how do you know they were installable?  you know they were available, but ...17:21
xtiancjwatson: after removing the multiarch entry for i386, the amd64 packages were installed17:21
cjwatsonmy unproven hypothesis here is that apt wasn't able to resolve some dependency using only native-architecture packages, and fell back to foreign-arch17:21
cjwatsonxtian: right, but you ran apt-get update in between, right?17:22
xtiancjwatson: yes17:22
slangasekxtian, cjwatson: would like to see specific commands and output of what's happening; yes, apt is meant to always prefer the native packages, but I know there's at least an issue that once it's picked *one* i386 package to satisfy a dependency, it will remain sticky to that arch when it shouldn't17:22
cjwatsonso the situation might have changed in the archive17:22
slangaseki.e., whereas installing an i386 library that depends on a multi-arch: foreign package should prefer the amd64 version of that package, apt is preferring the i386 version17:23
cjwatsonit doesn't sound like xtian's situation ought to have involved anything from i386, though17:24
xtianslangasek, cjwatson: i've searched all regular files in the chroot, and all ELF objects were amd64 after removing the multiarch entry17:24
slangasekxtian: much easier to run dpkg -l '*:i386' :)17:24
slangasekbug #877681 is the apt bug about wrong m-a: foreign packages being chosen17:25

xtianslangasek: ok, convinced... :)17:26
slangasekcjwatson: right, so bug #877681 describes the one issue I know where there's an apt bug; I agree that xtian's situation sounds more like transient archive skew17:26
ubottuLaunchpad bug 877681 in apt (Ubuntu) "Oneric's ia32-libs has unresolved dependencies, breaks subversion" [Low,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/87768117:26
cjwatsonslangasek: right, I'm unconvinced that transient archive skew ought to be allowed to lead to this though17:27
xtianslangasek, cjwatson: okay, i'll keep an eye on it, just wanted to make sure it is not apt/dpkg/... failing somewhere17:28

xtianslangasek, cjwatson: thanks for your insight, i'll also check out #87768117:28
cjwatson(maybe)17:29
xtianslangasek, cjwatson: will it be worth it to file a bug, if only for the record?17:33
xtianthen again, it's always a pain searching in a bug-db, so not sure how much good a report could do17:33
slangasekxtian: probably only worth filing a bug if you can provide apt-get output showing the issue in question17:33
slangasekwhen you can do so, yes, please file a bug on apt17:33
slangasek(without the output, I'm sure it's too vague to ever get actioned)17:34
xtianslangasek: i can just set up the chroot again (freshly) and provide the commands and their output17:34
slangasekxtian: if it's reproducible this way, then that would definitely warrant a bug report, thanks :)17:34
xtianslangasek: as i'm thinking i see it cjwatson's way that even if there's rumble on the archive, apt should not prefer a foreign arch over it's native one, if the packages are available17:35
xtian(in native format, that is)17:36
slangasekthe problem is in deciding what to do when the foreign arch package is installable and the native one isn't17:36
slangasekour choices are a) install the foreign arch one or b) hold the package back; both have drawbacks17:37
xtianhum, i've just checked, sources.list has oneiric and precise, in that order17:39
xtianmaybe, after removing i386 multiarch, apt fell back to oneiric and used amd64 packages from there17:39
slangasekthat could be it indeed17:40
xtianwhile, with the i386 multiarch in-place, it was seeing newer i386 packages in precise and used them17:40

slangasekxtian: I think a bug report against apt showing the specifics would still be worthwhile; preferably including 'apt-cache policy $pkg' output, with multiarch enabled, for one of the packages that apt picks the i386 version for17:46
