meltiestoohello, i just installed lubuntu as an "upgrade" (ubuntu 11.10->lubuntu 11.10), and when it boots up it looks like it tries to start x, fails, and then kind of sits there at vterm(?) 7.  when i go to an alternate vterm, i can login and run startx just fine, and things go about their merry way.  any idea what's going on here?  i looked in /var/log/messages and in the x logs too, and didn't see02:04
meltiestooanything that really stuck out.  i'd be happy if lubuntu would just not even bother trying to start x and hang out at vterm 1 until i login/startx manually, but i couldn't figure out how to do this02:04
wxl!purelxde | meltiestoo02:05
ubot5meltiestoo: If you want to remove all !KDE, !GNOME and !XFCE packages and have a default !Lubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purelxde »02:05
wxltry that :D02:05
phillwwxl: I will marry him, He has done so much, quietly, for lubuntu.02:09
wxlphillw: i'm speechless02:10
silverarrowhi03:14
silverarrowwhat would input/output error mean?03:14
silverarrowI sometimes get it when I am about to boot down03:14
phillwwxl: starting via startx sucks, they should really use the command to start lxdm, else they get a really poor system.03:19
silverarrowphillw, how?03:21
phillwsilverarrow: sudo service lxdm start03:21
silverarrowoh I see03:22
silverarrowI have that one on a postit on the wall here03:22
silverarrowwhat gives the error "input /output error"?03:22
phillwsilverarrow: then remember it and use it :)03:23
silverarrowI will03:23
silverarrowI sometimes get it when booting down, and nothing seems to respond03:23
silverarrowI hope it's sorted itself out after reboot I did03:24
phillwsilverarrow: pass. The kernel does as it sees fit. It has to work on many different systems. If it causing a failure to start / shut down then raise it as a bug.03:24
silverarrowyou think?03:24
silverarrowhmm03:24
silverarrowit does start, more like trouble that acts up when system is running03:25
silverarrowyyy03:25
phillwsilverarrow: as keeps being told, please raise a bug report with the system details. "It does not work" does not let the devs have any information as to why you have a problem. There are areas to teach you how to raise a bug report that has the details that they need. Unless they have them, they will not consider looking at them.03:28
phillw!bugs03:28
ubot5If you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its derivatives, please file a bug using the command « ubuntu-bug <package> » - See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs for other ways to report bugs.03:28
silverarrowI was a bit worried it might be hardware failure, but I haven't had any trouble with puppy linux, but then again it is a frugal install03:28
silverarrowthanks03:29
phillwsilverarrow:  ^^^03:29
silverarrowis that a smilie of sorts?03:29
phillwsilverarrow: for, you? of course it is. you always keep the people who help on their toes :) One day, you will make a great helper - as you will have gone through all the pain of learning & be able to help new-commers.03:31
silverarrowI hope I'm not too much of a bother lol03:32
silverarrowI have made some investment into lubuntu especially03:33
silverarrowmaking it work on my laptops03:33
phillwsilverarrow: my only advice to you would be to read the support area for lubuntu, that way you will get a good idea about things & also how we deal with them.03:35
phillwhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation It has so much info, that when you read through it, you will feel more confident in dealing with issues. Just be aware, it is quite a training course!03:36
silverarrowI shall keep reading up on info there : )03:37
silverarrowis there a way I can check if/when swap gets used?04:09
silverarrowI run htop but I cannot see anything?04:10
silverarrowI made swap 2GB, a bit large perhaps04:11
silverarrowbut lots of space on hd04:11
w30silverarrow, cat /proc/meminfo04:17
w30silverarrow, but that's not a history04:18
silverarrowhmm04:19
silverarroww30: it came out as priority -1 and 0 used04:20
silverarrowbut not much running now04:20
w30silverarrow, I think hibernate uses a lot of swap04:20
silverarrowyes, and it seems to be a must04:21
silverarrowI have 2GB  swap and my system will not hibernate04:21
silverarrowit acts up04:22
silverarrowactually I haven't tried hibernation this time04:24
silverarrowit might work04:24
w30silverarrow, I have a 2 gig swap partition also04:25
w30silverarrow, but I have no desire to hibernate04:26
silverarrowme neither really, so I never looked much into it04:26
silverarrowhowever, I did wonder if system might benefit from swap even if ram is fairly good, like 1GB04:27
wxlno one here has any experience with debian live do they? (the project that actually creates live images)04:28
wxlbtw phillw thx for that ubuntu-bug tip. i thought all there was was apport04:29
silverarrowhi  mark7604:31
mark76Hey silverarrow04:36
mark76I'm not staying long. Just waiting for the nasal spray I took to work04:38
wxlthat's what i usually do when i take my medicine; check out the situation at #lubuntu04:38
mark76Lol04:38
mark76I have it set to log in automatically04:39
w30silverarrow, screenlets has a system monitor for ram,swap.uptime.etc.04:42

benccstlsaint: what does it means to be part of the ubuntu family?13:40
benccstlsaint: by compatible I mean that apache or mysql version on ubuntu 11.10 will be the same as on lubuntu 11.1013:41
stlsaintbencc: well that does not mean ubuntu/lubuntu are compatible...that is based off packages but to answer your question: Yes, those same packages from ubuntu will work in (L)ubuntu13:45

xsaidxmark76: no i mean install15:05
xsaidxmark76: whats that bsd ??15:05
mark76Why don't you install them in a separate partition?15:05
mark76No, it's ROX on Debian GNU/Linux made to look like OpenSolaris15:06
xsaidxyeh i have a partion set for tests but  im jst havin problem to make a good use of my time like kno15:06
