tvdaviesHow does one get a just a bit smaller screen rotatable cube for the workspace ?05:26
urlin2utvdavies, you can set the size in rotate cube generally05:27
urlin2udepends on your tweaks05:27
tvdaviesWould that be in 'CompizConfig Settings Manager' ?05:28
urlin2utvdavies, yeah05:29
tvdaviesThere are 4 tabs to select from, none which have to do with the size.  I use Ubuntu Linux 10.0405:30
urlin2utype zoom on the search in compiz tvdavies05:32
tvdaviesWhen I did, there are two selections to choose from, one - 'Enhanced Zoom Desktop' and the other is 'Zoom Desktop'.05:35
w30it's confusing but there is a change in size depending on the number of windows open and the separation distance settings of those windows. there is also a minimum size of cube size somewhere, I forget just play with it I guess?05:36
tvdaviesok05:36
urlin2utvdavies, it has been a long time since I used lucid and I'm on gnome 3 so when you find it and adjust it it will work immediatly, it is a slider.05:37
w30tvdavies, look in rotate and cube and raised windows plugins for starters05:37
tvdaviesYeah, I kind of think so.  I see alot of sliders in the areas to tweak for a certain visual effect.  Its a matter of them responding when I test to see if it'll work.05:38
w30tvdavies, luckily you don't have to restart compiz to see results05:39
tvdaviesyeah, another thing we can say about Linux.  Still testing here.  I see also that in the controls for rotating the cube, there is some response that I am getting.05:40
tvdaviesTimestep can be like a ping pong ball coming at you.05:41
tvdaviesWe'll...that's pretty good.  Some more experimenting to go...but, I am having fun in the meantime.  This is good.   :D06:02

tvdaviesI've read all I can about making changes to the GRUB boot order, and trying to change the amount of previous upgrades, except I have not been able to make the list smaller for selectivity purposes.  I just want to see the last 2 upgrades in GRUB, and the Windows 7 selection choice.  I use Lucid Lynx 10.04 Ubuntu distro, and GRUB 1.98    Please advise.  :D17:06
hobgoblintvdavies: do you want to juts remove them from the list? Or actually get rid of the old kernels17:11
tvdaviesjust to remove them from the list.17:11
bioterrorwith legacy grub it's 10 times easier ;)17:11
bioterrorbut there's benefits in using grub 217:12
hobgoblinbioterror: indeed - but we've not got that ....17:12
holsteini just remove the old kernels17:13
holsteini leave the last one that worked, and the latest17:13
hobgoblinme too17:13
holsteinactually, i dont even do that much anymore ;)17:13
holsteini kinda let them pile up... but ideally thats what i do17:14
hobgoblintvdavies: try Start up manager https://help.ubuntu.com/community/StartUpManager17:14
holsteini see no advantage to hiding them, when you just remove the olde kernels, and run sudo update-grub, and all is good17:14
tvdavieswe'll...I don't know anything about legacy grub, but I know I have GRUB 1.98, and after reading much on the internet about manipulating GRUB by myself, I have not been able to actually find the list in my Ubuntu system.17:14
holsteintvdavies: you can find the list, but again, i say just remove the kernels.. you wont be able to boot them if they are not in that list17:15
tvdaviesok, I'll look at the link first; it seems after reading your comment people that I should remove the old kernels.17:15
holsteinyou can open up synaptic for example and search linux17:15
hobgoblintvdavies: hang on - try this instead of sum - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=128760217:15
holsteinor, make a note of the verions you want to remove and search those17:15
tvdaviesok, I'll be right back soon after reading a few things here for you continued support if you are still around.  Thank you for helping me and being there.17:16
tvdaviesDid you people just use Synaptic Package Manager to make your GRUB changes to reduce the size of the GRUB gui that comes up, all the while removing the old kernels ?17:18
holsteini use a package manager... usually apt or aptitude17:19
holsteinthats what i decided to do about it17:19
holsteinsometimes i use lowlatency kernels for audio, and want to re-order GRUB or something more advanced17:19
tvdaviesok, ummm...what do I select in Synaptic Package Manager to remove old kernels ?17:20
holsteintvdavies: you dont have to use synaptic17:20
holsteinthere wont be a 'remove old kernels' button17:21
tvdaviesok17:21
hobgoblinsearch for lionux-image and you'll see them17:21
holsteinyou would open whatever package manager you are comfortable with, and search for the kernel packages17:21
hobgoblinwhoops - linux-image17:21
holsteinhobgoblin: those show in the software center?17:21
tvdaviesI'll look for   linux-image17:21
hobgoblinholstein: oh - no idea - never use the thing17:22
* holstein trying...17:22
hobgoblinI'll have a look17:22
tvdavieswhen I type in   linux-image    a whole bunch of things come up.17:22
hobgoblintvdavies: are you using synaptic17:23
hobgoblinand what version of ubuntu are you using17:23
tvdaviesyes17:23
holsteinyeah, i see it in the software center too17:23
hobgoblinholstein: all I see is generic - which is not much use17:23
tvdaviesI am using Ubuntu 10.04  Lucid Lynx17:23
holsteintvdavies: doesnt matter17:24
holsteini search linux-image in the software center and i see a nice list17:24
hobgoblintvdavies: in the list you now are looking at click the button above the installed or not column - that is the one that has some ticks in it17:24
hobgoblinshould order them with the installed things at the top - go down the list to find the ones you want to remove - right click and mark for complete removal17:25
holsteinhttp://imagebin.org/18089017:25
hobgoblinholstein: in a clean install oneric I have the generic thing only17:25
tvdaviesHmmm...I am now in the Ubuntu Software Centre, and there is a  'Generic Linux kernel image' available.  Do I install that ?17:26
holsteinim running 10.0417:26
holsteinand you can see i dont keep things as clean as i used too ;)17:26
holsteintvdavies: i wouldnt do anything you are not comfortable with17:26
holsteintvdavies: look at that image http://imagebin.org/18089017:26
hobgoblin+117:26
tvdaviesI think I see what you are tyinf to point out to me in that last hyperlink.17:26
hobgoblinI find it all easier and quicker in synaptic :)17:27
tvdavieshang on17:28
holsteinyeah, synaptic is still my fav for it too17:28
holsteinbut, tvdavies , i would remove the kernels i want gone from that list17:28
holsteinwhich, would be the bottom 6 generic kernels17:29
tvdaviesSo, what I gather, is that in the software centre, in order to remove the old kernels, I would just check them off to be removed there which would inadvertently remove them from the GRUB list that I would see for my multiple boot system, right ?17:30
holsteintvdavies: thats the idea17:30
holsteinif you dont need/want them, then thats what i would do17:30
tvdaviesok, I see said the blind man.  Let me try it out.  Hang on please, and I'll let you know how I make out.  If I need to reboot, I'll come back here to let you know how things worked out.17:31
holsteintvdavies: i remember loading up an installation in virtualbox, and testing/breaking that one when i was learning17:32
hobgoblinholstein: this is software centre looking for linux-imag http://imagebin.org/180892 and then looking for linux-image http://imagebin.org/18089317:34
tvdaviesBTW, how do I figure out which version of Linux kernel is on my system without having to go to the GRUB menu ?17:37
holsteinhobgoblin: you know, i had to reload the search once, like the *-center was buggy or something17:38
holsteinthis is the 10.04 version of it though...17:38
tvdaviesyes, I have 10.04 LTS17:38
holsteintvdavies: uname -a will tell you what you are running17:38
holsteini suggest keeping that one *and* one earlier17:39
holsteinsometimes you can get a kernel update to the latest that could break something17:39
hobgoblinholstein: I only ever use it if I'm looking for something for someone else - luckily as I'm oin xubuntu I still had synaptic without installing it17:39
holsteinhobgoblin: this is probaby the 4th or 5th time ive opened it17:40
hobgoblin:)17:40
tvdaviesYes, I want to keep my latest kernel and the previous.  That would be wise and safe.   Please note that Ubuntu Software Centre did not install 'Generic Linux kernel image', nor did it show previous kernels installed.  I have Linux Vostro-1520-Laptop 2.6.32-34-generic #77-Ubuntu SMP Tue Sep 13 19:40:53 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux as the most recent kernel installed.17:42
holsteintvdavies: there are lots of ways to get what you want... you can try synaptic for example17:42
holsteinor look in your menu list, and search by the version #'s17:43
tvdaviesI appreciate the comment about doing this in VirtualBox to try out.  That would be ultimately safe, but would take quite a long time to do.17:43
holsteinnah... installs are like 10 minutes these days17:43
holsteinsave a snapshot, and do your worst :)17:43
tvdaviesyes, right...we'll do that.  That's smart.  Ok, now when I used Synaptic Package Mgr, I did not see previous versions of my kernel loaded.  What should I search for to see the previous versions in order to uncheck them to remove them ?17:45
hobgoblinlinux-image17:45
holsteinyup, or the version #'s17:45
tvdaviesk, hang on17:46
hobgoblinwhy dont you run syanptic - do the search - make it list them properly - then do a screenie for us to look at17:46
tvdaviesok, I am removing all but the two latest kernels using Synaptic Package Mgr as I type this.17:49
tvdavieswhat is the terminal command to update now the grub ?17:52
holsteintvdavies: sudo update-grub17:52
hobgoblinsynaptic should have run it - bu tif not sudo update-grub17:52
holsteinbut, it probably did it ^^ yeah17:52
tvdaviesok, I am now going to reboot, and come back here to this chat and let you know how successful I was due to your help.  Now I am going to go around the darkside of the moon Houston.17:54
tvdaviesholstein, and hobgoblin....it worked totally, and successfully.  Now I have a shorter boot list on my GRUB gui, and all is well.  Splashdown !!! :D  Yippie   :D17:58
hobgoblincool17:58
holstein:)17:58
tvdaviesYou people have been such a help to get through all the rigamarole on the internet in regards to getting the right instructions to manipulate GRUB.17:59
holsteintvdavies: anytime... now you know a bit more about package manipulation17:59
tvdaviesThank you...yeah...the next thing to work out is wireless connectivity.  I think that my DELL WLAN card is stubborn.  It used to work with a older kernel on this machine I am using.  I'll have to come back here sometime, maybe today to discuss this in more depth.18:00
holsteintvdavies: if you can plug it in to wired internet, look for a proprietary driver popup18:01
tvdaviesok, talk to you later.  Gotta go.  You're the best.18:02
tpyoi just installed ubunutu studio off a usb on some random laptop i have hanging around. Selected no additional packages (as I was having issues with these) selected ubuntu from the menu and now I just have a blinking cursor20:45
tpyois that correct?20:45
tpyoor has something gone wrong?20:45
holsteintpyo: im going to guess graphics card20:46
tpyooh awesome... the screen has now gone completely blank after like 10 minutes of leaving it in this state.20:46
tpyoah... this sounds interesting20:46
holsteinyou might want to try and get to the desktop with the live CD20:46
holsteinor USB...20:46
bodhi_zazendid X (your graphical system) work when you ran it live ?20:46
bodhi_zazenAnd what graphics card do you have ?20:47
tpyoso i would need a different package on the USB than the bootable image to test this?20:47
tpyoor is it just a different option?20:47
holsteintpyo: nope, same installer... let bodhi_zazen know what the hardware is20:47
tpyoi forget exactly what the gfx is on the device but its some intel integrated gfx chipset20:47
tpyoit was previously a windows lappy20:48
bodhi_zazenOK, well re-boot ...20:48
holsteinyou could start reading some #'s off the bottom, side or top of the unit and we can all google for the GPU20:48
bodhi_zazenAt the boot menu, boot to a recovery shell20:48
tpyok, lemme google the info I have in the bios to find the gfx20:49
bodhi_zazenYou will then have a command line, and from there you can look at the hardware, and install the driver20:49
bodhi_zazenIf that is sounding too complicated, boot windows and look from there20:50
tpyono, thats fine, whats the command to query the hardware from the console?20:51
tpyolooks like i get some cute errors while booting the recovery console20:53
tpyofailed command: READ FPDMA QUEUED20:54
tpyoWRITE too20:54
holsteini usually spend some time with some live CD's testing hardware20:55
tpyobut it does eventually find its way to the recovery menu20:55
holsteinrunning a memory test real quick, and the hard drive20:55
tpyoi want to drop to the root shell prompt?20:55
holsteini run lspci from there, and look at the hardware20:56
tpyoaha20:56
tpyoVGA Compatible Controller - Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Intefgrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)20:57
tpyowhich is also the Display Controller20:57
tpyopretty much every line returned by lspci is an intel jobby20:58
tpyois that typically a problem?20:58
holsteinintel hardware? a typical problem?20:59
holsteinusually intel is well supported20:59
tpyoah okay20:59
holsteinanyways, you have options20:59
tpyok20:59
tpyoi like options20:59
tpyooh and out of interest, what does "lspci" stand for? So that I might remember it better21:00
holsteinwell, ls is list typically21:01
bodhi_zazentpyo:21:01
bodhi_zazenhttp://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/oneiric/man8/lspci.8.html21:02
bodhi_zazenls = list21:02
holsteinso, list pci hardware?21:02
bodhi_zazenpci = pcidevices21:02
holsteinthats how i think of it21:02
holsteinlsusb too21:02
bodhi_zazenLearning to read man pages is a skill under-emphasized to new users =)21:03
tpyothanks, that will help me remember it :)21:03
bodhi_zazenexplanation + reference to man page is best21:03
bodhi_zazentpyo: best way to learn the command line is to use it ;)21:04
holsteinyeah... i have only recently been getting into man pages21:04
tpyoyes, I would love to be able to do this21:04
bodhi_zazenFirst few sections here : http://linuxcommand.org/21:04
tpyoalas I am mired in 15 years of pure windoze experience21:04
holsteini usually google, but i was stuck without internet access, and sorted something not too trivial out by referencing man pages, and -help flags :)21:04
tpyough, tell me about it... im presently in an internet cafe in Iceland21:05
bodhi_zazenThey seem a foreign language at first, well they are a foreign language at first21:05
tpyocause I still have no internet access at home yet21:05
bodhi_zazenbut one day they will click21:05
tpyowell im used to developing in managed languages where things are expressed in full21:06
tpyonot C based development environments where name lengths are restricted21:06
tpyoand commands have smaller names21:06
tpyo:)21:06
tpyoso.... i guess the next thing to check would be performing a memory and HDD test from the USB key?21:06
tpyoto just check these areas are okay21:07
tpyothen following this (if they're okay) finding some sort of mechanism to manually install my display drivers?21:07
tpyoor well.... all drivers for that matter21:07
tpyoweird when I try to "check the disk for defects" from my usb installer I get "The CD-ROM you have inserted is not a valid Ubuntu CD-ROM. Please change the disk"21:11
tpyowhen I "test memory" it states: "cannot load a ramdisk with an old kernal image"21:12
tpyowell perhaps it would be prudent to recreate the usb image21:15
tpyowhich application would you recommend to make bootable usb images?21:16
tpyoi used unetbootin to make this one21:16
bodhi_zazenunetbootin is fine21:17
bodhi_zazenwe sort of need more information on your card to get it working21:18
bodhi_zazenI understand it is an intel21:18
bodhi_zazenbut that is not saying much as in general most intel work21:18
tpyowhere would I be able to obtain more information about the device?21:19
tpyo" Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Intefgrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)" was about as detailed as the output from lspci got21:19
bodhi_zazenhttp://www.ubuntu.com/certification/catalog/component/pci:2A42:8086-VIDEO21:19
tpyomy device wasn't listed there21:20
tpyoi have21:20
tpyohttp://www.overstock.com/Electronics/TravelMate-8371-Laptop/4366204/product.html#none21:20
tpyoi mean... if that list is supposed to be comprehensive... that is21:20
tpyothe link i just posted contains the string: "Intel GMA 4500MHD Graphics Card"21:22
bodhi_zazenIf that is the model, you have Graphics Controller Model: GMA 4500MHD21:22
tpyohmmm but thats not what lspci returned....21:22
tpyobut that link I posted is the correct "brand" Acer Travelmate 837121:22
tpyobut i dont know if the components for that brand were always fixed21:23
daveinlvI had to switch a 10.04 laptop install from a laptop with Nvidia video to one with Intel. I get the dialog during startup telling me X cannot find the Nvidia video adapter. I select "create new config" and X starts up fine. However this does not stick after a reboot, I have to redo the "create new config" after each reboot.. How do I save the new config??21:23
tpyodid you state earlier there would be numbers on the back of the device that might be more accurate?21:23
bodhi_zazentpyo: that video card looks as if it is going to be difficult to get the graphics card working21:25
bodhi_zazenIt appears you need the same driver as the GMA500, and support for that card sucks21:25
bodhi_zazenhttp://www.linuxjournal.com/content/how-kick-your-friends-face-gma50021:26
bodhi_zazenYou can try this : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCardsPoulsbo21:26
bodhi_zazenOr this : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Poulsbo21:26
bodhi_zazenPersonally I use gentoo for this problem21:27
bodhi_zazenhttp://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Acer_Aspire_One_AO751h21:27
bodhi_zazenbut unless you want to start compiling your kernel and such, of all those choices, I would21:28
bodhi_zazenuse another laptop21:28
bodhi_zazenIf I had to use Linux, I would start with Arch21:28
bodhi_zazenIf Arch did not work, gentoo21:28
tpyoyou sir are the awesomesauce21:28
tpyofinding all this niche information so quicklt21:28
tpyoand sparing me hours of potential confusion21:28
tpyoi salute you21:29
* tpyo salutes bodhi_zazen 21:29
tpyookay I can easily earmark another lappy for this purpose then21:29
tpyothanks for sparing me hours of suffering :)21:30
bodhi_zazentpyo: you can try this21:31
bodhi_zazeno21:31
bodhi_zazenhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=645003221:31
bodhi_zazenbut it is for an older version of Ubuntu and that I know is no longer supported21:31
bodhi_zazenI do not have that exact card, but, support is going to be spotty at best21:31
tpyoconsidering this is my first install21:32
tpyoand the symptoms given in that thread dont exactly match my own21:33
tpyoill just earmark a different laptop21:33
tpyofor the ubuntu install21:33
tpyothis one was going to be given to a lovely girl in Hamburg anyway.... to run windoze21:33
bodhi_zazenMore recent threads on your card look like this21:33
bodhi_zazenhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1457530&highlight=Intel+GMA+450021:33
tpyoso i'll grab one of my spare Dell Inspirons instead :)21:33
bodhi_zazenCheck the video card first21:34
bodhi_zazenfrom windows21:34
bodhi_zazenand tell us what it is21:34
tpyoim pretty sure it was listed in one of your earlier links21:35
tpyolemme check quickly21:35
tpyohmmm21:36
tpyo: Intel HD Graphics 300021:36
tpyothat isn't the same piece of crap is it?21:36
tpyothe make/model of the laptop im NOW considering to use is a  Inspiron N504021:39
tpyoif that helps21:39
bodhi_zazentpyo: probably easier if you fire up the desktop21:39
holsteinyou could try a custom xorg.conf with the vesa driver21:39
tpyoah well its not with me atm21:39
bodhi_zazenYou can test all your hardware from there, including graphics and wireless21:39
tpyobecause my office is an internet cafe *cries*21:39
bodhi_zazenIf it works out of the box -> install21:40
bobweaverhi there anyone having any trouble with lubuntu and older dell's I installed lubuntu 10.10 and after install got busy box. I then tried to install lubuntu 11.10 and now the VGA is blown out (I think ) anyone seen or had any troubles like this ?21:40
bobweaverI tryed to install other vga that I have laying around and still nothing no bios nothing21:40
holsteinbobweaver: pull up a chair... thats similar to what tpyo is going though i think21:40
bobweaversweet21:40
bobweaverI have 7 more of these computers that i need to put os's on21:41
holsteini usually just try live CD's til soemthing works, and note the kernel, driver and take a look at and copy the xorg.xonf if there is one21:41
bobweaverI think that this is a little different I cant even get to bios like something may have shot the board21:43
tpyobobweaver, bodhi_zazen identified an issue with specific intel gfx cards that dont play nice with linux21:43
bobweaverI will try more graphics cards now21:43
tpyoah... that shouldn't effect the bios though21:43
bobweaverI have about 20 of them21:43
holsteinyeah, youd want to test the hardware bobweaver , then move on to OS21:43
bobweaveroh hardware is good21:44
bobweavertested last night broke out the om meter ande all21:44
tpyothe conversation we were having was around Intel  GMA 4500MHD cards and derivitives21:44
bobweaverstatic matts the whole 9 yard21:44
holsteinhow do you test the bios with an om meter?21:44
tpyothey dont play nice with Linux, basically21:44
bobweaverhardware21:44
bobweaverthese are old poweredge 140021:45
bobweaverDell21:45
holsteinwell, i dont want to split hairs about if the bios is hardware or software... all im saying is, if you dont get to a bios screen, then its notihing to do with the OS21:45
bobweaverholstein:  but I did have it before21:46
bobweaverI installed lubuntu21:46
holsteinbobweaver: before the hardware broke ;)21:46
bobweaverlol21:46
bobweaver could be21:46
holsteinbobweaver: if you want, and if its easy, just unplug the hard drive21:46
holsteinthen, you'll know its not lubuntu21:47
bobweaversure21:47
bobweaverl9ike I said I have 8 of these things21:47
bobweavernota21:49
bobweaverziltch21:49
bobweavertrying new graphics card21:50
holsteini pull the hard drives if its easy... hten you can force the power on and off... hwatever.. really mess around til you get a live CD working21:50
bobweaveryeah I pulled the hardivew from power and from board21:51
bobweaverbut getting power out the vga port21:51
bobweaver()_o21:52
bobweavernothing21:54
bobweaverone more box if happens there then debian21:55
holsteinyeah, but you have the hard drive unplugged21:56
bobweaveryup21:56
bobweaverand no21:56
bobweavertryed both ways21:56
bodhi_zazenbobweaver: what video card ?21:56
bobweaverlet me look up specsc21:57
bobweaverspecs21:57
bobweaverthey are old Dell poweredge 140021:57

bobweaverbodhi_zazen:  00:-e.0 VGA compatible controler: ATI technoligys Inc Rage XL [1002:4752 ](rev 27 )22:06
bobweaverjimmie:  also take a look at bleachbit22:09
bodhi_zazenbobweaver: support for that card also looks spotty22:15
bodhi_zazenUbuntu 10.04 might work22:15
bobweaveryeah I just DL bios hope that I can get it back22:16
bobweaverthey are servers I should just make into servers ? not desktops22:17
bodhi_zazenbobweaver: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=143088722:17
bodhi_zazenIf you need servers , yes22:17
bodhi_zazenIf you need desktops, fine inexpensive graphics cards ?22:17
bobweavergot about 20 of them ok maybe 15 in box somewhere22:18
bobweavergraphics cards that is22:18
bodhi_zazenTry Ubuntu 10.10 or 10.0422:19
bobweavercool will do I gave lubuntu 10.10 a shot but got busybox after install22:19
bodhi_zazenSo it worked live ?22:20
bobweaverYeah22:20
bodhi_zazenbut not post-install ?22:20
bodhi_zazencheck the md5sum of the iso22:20
bobweaverboth 10.10 and 11.1022:20
bobweaveryup22:20
bobweaverall good there also22:20
bodhi_zazenbusybox is not a graphics driver problem22:21
bodhi_zazenWhat partition did you install into ?22:21
bodhi_zazenYou using RAID ?22:21
bobweaversda122:22
bobweaveronly one HD22:22
bobweaverpulled others22:22
bobweaverfor testing22:22
bodhi_zazenbusybox is an emergency shell in the initramfs22:22
bodhi_zazenif you are getting that your initramfs is bad22:23
bodhi_zazenor you have some unusual hard drive ?22:23
bobweavernot that I know of22:23
bobweaverlet me see what kind they are22:23
bobweaverI think mamtor22:24
bodhi_zazenTry this22:24
bodhi_zazenhttp://www.tuxtrix.com/2009/12/solving-busybox-black-screen-problem-in.html22:24
bodhi_zazenboot the live CD22:24
bodhi_zazensudo -I22:24
bodhi_zazensudo -i22:24
bodhi_zazenmount /dev/sda1 /mnt22:25
bodhi_zazenThe edit your grub menu22:25
bodhi_zazenBetter , when you boot ...22:25
bodhi_zazendrop to a grub command and boot from there if you know how22:26
bodhi_zazenhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub222:27
bobweaverohhhh noooooo22:27
bobweaverI am idiot22:27
bobweaverok when installing I said overright all and installl22:27
bobweaverit said that there was  only 9.1 gigs I thought  that that was small22:28
bobweaver\could I have overwrote the bios ?22:28
bodhi_zazenI doubt it, you will see your bios when you boot, no ?22:29
bobweaverNope22:29
bobweaverI do Not see it22:29
bodhi_zazenYou might have over written a recovery partition ?22:29
bodhi_zazenWell you boot, bios starts, passes off boot to grub -> grub passed to initrd -> busybox22:30
bodhi_zazenso I would imagine it not a bios problem22:30
bodhi_zazenI would boot the live CD and change the kernel line in grub from root=UUID to root=/dev/sda122:33
bobweaverok just pulled HD out and it is a Quatum 3.5 series22:34
bobweaverother graphics card is not working either22:36
bodhi_zazenwhat card is not working ?22:36
bodhi_zazenlol22:36
bobweaverok so stock is not working VGA and also old one that i have laying around is not working22:37
bobweaverI will pull one of firewall box22:37
bodhi_zazenIn general, you are going to get the best support / results (IMO) with Ubuntu 11.10 and perhaps a non-gnome version (kubutnu, xubuntu, or lubuntu)22:38
bobweaveryeah these where donated to me so I thought that I would sell one to pay for a month membership to local hackerspace22:40
bobweaverthat is why I started to install desktop on it22:40
bodhi_zazenJust donate the boxes to the hackerspace for a 6 month membership =)22:41
bobweaverthere was open filter on it before I installed  11.10  . Oh and I got the boxs form the old hackerspace22:41
bobweaver:>)22:41
bobweaverso they 100% do not want them back22:42
bodhi_zazenWonder why ?22:42
bodhi_zazenI mean if a hacker space threw them out ...22:42
bodhi_zazen=)22:42
bodhi_zazenbut OK , you can probably use them for something22:43
bodhi_zazenSlitaz ?22:43
bobweavergoogleing22:43
bobweaverWow that is cool22:44
bobweaver30mb22:44
bobweaverOo22:44
bodhi_zazenThere is also tinycore22:45
bobweavercool22:45
bodhi_zazenI use both on older machines, I sort of like slitaz, but tinycore might be a little more user friendly for you22:45
bodhi_zazenThe are both minimal distros, but you can add packages post install (or compile them which is what I do)22:46
bobweaverhow to deal with dependence hell22:46
bobweaverwhen compile ?22:47
bobweaverCDE?22:47
bodhi_zazenyou have to download or install the dependencies22:47
bobweaverI have been having some trouble with that22:47
bodhi_zazenI only compile if the application is small "simple" , with minimal dependencies, and not in the repos22:48
bodhi_zazenWell, most of the errors you get with ./configure are dependencies22:48
bodhi_zazenof course you can read the README , usually (not always) helps22:48
bodhi_zazen ./configure --help22:48
bobweaverI also have been getting error with make and my ruby has been ... and after perl got moved from 5.10 to 5.1222:49
bobweaverI had to reinstall all perl programs22:49
bodhi_zazenWell, ruby is, IMO, typically a little more complex22:49
bodhi_zazenand you would have to pastebin the errors if you want me to look at them22:50
bobweaverfor my distro I use ubuntu server 11.10 as base mod kerenl and start adding things22:50
bodhi_zazenbobweaver: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD22:50
bodhi_zazenUnless you are running a server, the standard kernel is probably better on a desktop22:51
bobweaverhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/720184/ <--error with libncurses5-dev22:54
bodhi_zazenThat looks like a perl error22:55
bobweaversame program with Qt http://paste.ubuntu.com/720187/22:55
bobweaverinstead of gtk22:55
bodhi_zazenis this a perl script ?22:57
bobweavercan not find a good libqyoto4.5-cil22:57
bodhi_zazenhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdebindings/+bug/67790322:58
ubot2Launchpad bug 677903 in kdebindings "Package libqyoto4.5-cil is missing dependency on libqyotoshared1" [Undecided,Confirmed]22:58
bobweaverthat would be the one22:59
bodhi_zazendid you try the solution at the bottom of the page ?22:59
bobweaverit is just kinda dumb gui wep cracker but kiddies love it22:59

bodhi_zazenMicrosoft support was both expensive and of poor quality23:28
bodhi_zazenIf the support I needed at the time was decent I probably would not have started down the dark path23:29
bobweaverI tried to go back to widoz and blue screen of death within 8 hrs23:29
bodhi_zazenYea, here we are much better off23:30
