New_OneHi! Could someone tell me what is wrong with xubunutu distor 11.04. I am trying to install it through wubi, and then in the midle of process, just pops up an error?00:24
babbleNew_One, what error?00:27
New_OneJust say to check in tem folder and ther is on text file with lot of lines00:27
babblethat's unfortunately not really going to help narrow down what's going wrong.00:28

babblecan we try this another way instead of Wubi?00:31
New_Onei try few days ago with livecd, also didn't work00:31
New_Onewatht another way00:32
babbletry installing VirtualBox and install your live image into a VM there.00:38
babbleyou can try out Xubuntu without changing your Windows install00:39
New_Oneok, could you tell me what this realy menas - http://robertogaloppini.net/2009/12/27/wubi-ubuntu-installer-for-windows-oserror-errno-13-permission-denied/00:40
New_OneI have this error, so may be it colud work00:41
New_OneThis article above doesn't helpe00:45
well_laid_lawnNew_One: it says yu need to have the iso file in the right directory00:49
New_OneI tryed it doesn't work... the only thing I can try is to download xubuntu thorugh wubi, and not thorugh CD, but that is not so ok, because if your computer doesn't have internte, then you are in problem00:51
well_laid_lawnNew_One: you can copy the iso file off the cd and put it into the wubi directory00:52
New_Onehere is the thing, a downloada the iso file, then I create cd image, and then is started this cd... I stil have downloadet iso. So i put it in a folder and I copy wubi form the image cd into a folder, nothing hapened00:54

DeborahI upgraded to 11.10 and when I try to log in, I get a terminal in the upper left . any clue how I can get logged in???02:50
Deborahlovely. loads of people here and nobody's talking.02:51
babbledeborah: it's booting to the commandline instead of a desktop?02:52
Deborah yes02:53
babblecan you still log in using your regular user account?02:53
Deboraha terminal window in the upper left instead of booting to gnome or whatever the new thing is02:53
Deborahthat is my regular user account02:53
babbleI'm not quite sure what you mean by 'a terminal window in the upper left.'02:53
Deborahonly one I have set up, nobody else uses my puter02:53
babbledo you see just a black screen with a text prompt?02:53
babbleno GUI at all?02:54
Deborahin the upper left02:54
babblewell, 'in the upper left' and 'in a window' don't sound like you're actually booting to just a command prompt.02:54
babbledo you have actual windows drawn on screen, or JUST white text on a black screen?02:54
DeborahI have the regular ubuntu background, no taskbars or anything, just the command line box in the upper left02:55
Deborahit doesn't do the usual  loading thing, just pops that up02:55
babbleif you're seeing a desktop picture, you're loading to a desktop.02:55
babbleit just sounds like your regular panel isn't loading.02:55
Deborahno, it's the login background02:55
babbleare you using Ubuntu or Xubuntu?02:55

Deborahum ... the difference is ... ??? ubuntu02:56
Deborahxubuntu02:56
Deborah?02:56
babblewell, Xubuntu uses Xfce, which is a different desktop environment than Ubuntu and Unity02:56
babbleyou're in the Xubuntu-specific channel, which is why I asked :)02:56
Deborahah! then I guess I'm in the wrong place.02:56
Deborahthank you!02:56
babblenow: it NOW sounds like you're at the LightDM login02:56
babblecan you log into your machine with your regular username and password?02:57
DeborahI'll find the right one and see if anyone has any answers02:57
babbleif it's just a generic login issue, we can try to help02:57
DeborahI log in from the regular login and it just gives me the command prompt instead02:57
moetunessounds like twm with a xterm to me02:57
babbleit sounds like one or more of your Unity packages didn't get configured.02:57
DeborahI don't even want unity. I like my 2 taskbars in gnome! LOL!02:58
babblewhen you log in and get dropped to the commandline, do you THEN get *just* a black screen with white text?02:58
babblewell, in 11.10 if you're using the Ubuntu Desktop, you'll get Unity02:58
babbleyou can install Xubuntu and see how you like it02:58
Deborahno, it's a window over the purple background02:58
Deborahyeah, I know unity is there like it or not02:58
Deborahwhat's different and fabulous about xubuntu?02:58
babbleyou've got Terminal set to autoload.02:59
babblecan you mouse over to the LEFT side of your screen and get the Unity launcher?02:59
babblelooks like a dock with icons03:00
babbleshould appear when you mouse over to the left edge of the screen03:00
DeborahI don't think so. it honestly doesn't load anything, just instant popup of the term window03:00
babbleyeah, we'll get to that03:00
Deborahthe login screen has the purple background. it doesn't move when I login, no time at all between "enter" and window popup03:00
babbleI'm trying to figure out if you have enough of Unity installed and configured to launch anything03:00
babbledo you have window controls on that terminal window? can you close it?03:01
DeborahI did get in once, saw unity, logged out to change back to gnome ... and this happened and keeps repeating03:01
Deborahno header bar or menus or anything, just black window with white letters03:01
Deborahmaybe I need to have my dh download 11.10 and do a fresh install03:01
Deborahwhat a mess. updates USUALLY work fine, so I got spoiled and complacent03:02
babblein that terminal window, try sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop --reinstall03:02
Deborahok, will do03:02
Deborahthank you!03:02
babbleif that doesn't work, come back and we'll figure out what to do next03:02
babble(you'll probably have to run dpkg and redo your system config, but it will do it for you :)03:02
Deborahthank you! I'll be back if it doesn't work03:03
DeborahI'm a user, not a programmer--for about 10 years now with various linux distro's, just haven't ever gotten to remembering commands. have to look them up when I need them03:03
babbleno worries.03:03
babbleI *think*, but can't say for sure, that the ubuntu-desktop metapackage will redo a dpkg configure if you choose reinstall03:04
Deborahbabble? you still here? I'm back03:16
Deborahreinstalling desktop didn't do a thing03:16
Deborahit's there, I just don't have a clue how to get in03:16
Deborahor maybe I do ... be back if it doesn't work03:17
Deborahafter I shut down live cd, boot to login, try it, reboot back into live cd ...03:17
Deborahokay, in case anyone else gets a case of the stupids and winds up here with a term window when attempting to log in to ubuntu 11.10, tell them to click the options gear again and choose ubuntu, because when you click it initially it chooses FOR you the first option, which is some kind of recovery03:27
holsteinDeborah: you are good?03:28

BurfdlHi, I'm on oneiric using an apple aluminium keyboard (uk). It was working fine with the wrong keymap (@=", etc) but now i've switched it across I can't map window switching to the ctrl/alt/meta keys. Keyboard preferences recognises the keystroke, but the event doesn't fire. I'm left switching with the screen-top window buttons for the moment. Other combinations like ctrl+backspace for word-delete work fine though. Has anyone had this before? Thanks08:39
well_laid_lawnwhat do you mean by " but now i've switched it across" ?08:41
BurfdlIt was on whatever the default model+layout was, I switched it to model:"Apple Aluminium Keyboard (ISO)" layout:"English (UK)" in the layout tab of the keyboard section of the settings manager,08:43
JesperDKHi all. I just installed xubuntu yesterday, and I'm already loving it. XFCE is much better than GNOME or Unity in my mind. But I'd really like to have the two panels switch place, so that my "start button" is in the bottom, like I'm used to in Windows. Can anybody help me solve this problem?10:27
knomeJesperDK, do you want to switch the panels head-to-head completely, or just the applications menu?10:28
JesperDKI guess the applications menu would be enough. I haven't been using the panel that's on the bottom now anyway10:28
knomeJesperDK, okay. right-click on the panel, select panel -> panel preferences10:29
Sysijust set up your panel how you want, drag items around, move panels etc.10:29
knomeJesperDK, from that dialog, go to tab items and add/remove the applications menu applet10:29

GridCube1) manual edition12:45
GridCube2) no idea what you are talking about12:45
GridCubeyou never asked a third question12:46
babbletakis-sanjo: I'm not sure what you're wanting to edit, but there's a themerc file inside the xfwm folder for the theme you want to edit12:46
babbleit's relatively simple to grasp12:46
takis-sanjothe color values in themerc12:46
babble(make a copy of the window theme just in case, and edit that)12:46
well_laid_lawnor find a new theme12:46
takis-sanjohoped there was a color tool or something12:46
well_laid_lawn!themes12:46
ubottuTo change your theme in Xubuntu, go to Settings Manager » Appearance (GTK+ theme) or Settings Manager » Window Manager (xfwm4 theme) to change the theme - find more themes at http://xfce-look.org/ or http://gnome-look.org/ (for GTK+ themes)12:46
takis-sanjono this is to change a theme not edit a theme12:47
takis-sanjook12:47
GridCubeoh to change you go to >settings >appearance and >setting >window manager12:48

Sysinotification systems should conflict so that package manager removes other when you install different one, dunno what happens when you remove that17:14
holsteinthe xfce one could be removed when installing the other one17:15
raevolit didn't conflict, it let me install both at the same time17:15
raevoloh well i can live with the settings being broken17:16
Sysilibnotify-osd doesn't really sound like entire notify system.. I think notify-osd is called notification-daemon now17:17
raevoli see17:17
raevolsure enough, my unmounting notification is broken again17:32

preecheri dont know why i say this but i feel its just some little BS thing that i dont know how to correct17:45

muzzy_hi guys... i have a really annoying problem with a fresh install of xubuntu 11.10, i keep getting random blank screens and i have to reboot to get back to the desktop... i mean, sometimes while using my computer, the desktop disappears and everything i can see is the mouse pointer18:42
Satanaahelps a lot since im on a netbook :)18:42
holsteingnome-do like... nice and light though18:42
Satanaaits from gnome-do :)18:43

muzzy_anyone with the same problem? a guy suggested me to replace lightdm with gdm, but it didn't work...18:43
Satanaaits in the repos as "docky"18:43
holsteingnome-do seems heavy though...18:44
Sysiif panel is same color as window titlebar it has to be at the bottom or desktop looks unbalanced18:44

muzzy_Satanaa, but i'm using xubuntu too...18:45
Satanaai only had that issue with ubuntu18:45
Satanaaso did you update xfce or format and install?18:46
Satanaaknome, how did you get it to say "places" ?18:46
muzzy_i installed and updated all packages18:46
knomeSatanaa, it's the places plugin, not the dir plugin18:46
Satanaamine is there but has no icon.. the icon looked stupid without text18:46
muzzy_hmmm but the same happened once during the installation process18:46
Satanaaooohh thanks18:47
muzzy_it seems like a problem with the intel driver18:47
knomeSatanaa, you can't mount removable devs with the places plugin though18:47
Satanaaah18:47
Satanaai just want the homedir :)18:48
holsteinthe question i have is... in http://imagebin.org/181266 you can see that there is room on the left side for the unity bar18:48
knomei just want the gtk bookmarks :)18:48
holsteinthats gotta be some global compiz setting?18:48
SysiSatanaa: I found just launching thunar faster18:48
knomeSatanaa, yeah, if you want the homedir only, add a launcher for thunar18:49
SysiI could try compiz before I decide to blow up this fedora installation..18:49
holsteinSysi: you should, then you can teach me some things :)18:50
Satanaaknome, you did see my xfce start menu icon right? right next to it is my homedir.. just picked a icon that is transparent :P18:50
knomemmh18:51
Satanaaused the "directory dir" one18:51
Satanaaoh wait muzzy_18:52
Satanaa"muzzy_> hmmm but the same happened once during the installation process"18:52
Satanaahappend to me too18:52
Satanaabut then i just shut my box down and reinstalled18:52
muzzy_hmmm yes, i had to start installation again18:52
Satanaai just figured that i shut the box off too early when it had a black screen18:53
Satanaagot no issues now18:53
muzzy_second installation went ok...18:53
Satanaabut i cant use ubuntu 11.10, some dev messed uo18:53

Guest93301Hello. I have just installed Xubuntu 11.10 64-bit. When I boot it stops at "Checking battery state".19:14
drcGuest69301: Laptop. I assume?  Turn it off, take the battery out and reboot...See if it boots thru?19:16
Guest93301drc: No, it is a desktop.19:17
Guest93301:/19:17
holsteinwell, i got that compiz expo thing sorted.. http://imagebin.org/181271 it was just some default settings in the expo config making room for the unity bar19:19
drcGuest69301: Then I have no idea.19:22
holsteinGuest69301: did you get to the desktop live? do you have the live ISO handy?19:23
holsteinim finding old bugs similar to that... i would like to boot a live CD with the 'noacpi' option and maybe test for a few more options... see if a live CD goes to the desktop19:26
drcGuest69301: Did you install from the LiveCD/USB desktop, or go straight to the install option?19:27
ScottEGuest69301, Try pressing ctrl-alt-f1 when you see that message. If you get a login prompt, that's a good sign19:28
drchmmm...lots to tab completion errors here :)19:33

chrisNYCHello, I am trying to install SMath Studio (http://en.smath.info/forum/default.aspx?g=posts&t=643) on xubuntu. It requires Mono runtime, which I have installed via Ubuntu Software Center. However, I am unsure what to do with the *.mono.tar.gz file i have downloaded from the SMath website. Am I supposed to manually uncompress this file?20:55
beardygnomechrisNYC: i'm not familiar with smath studio, but that's the normal process for installing third party apps20:57
beardygnomethe archive should have installation instructions in it20:58
chrisNYCok well after extracting it, all i have in the folder is an exe file, I guess mono runtime is required to open this file20:58
chrisNYCthere are no installation instructions20:59
GridCubechrisNYC, then from a terminal go to the folder containing that exe21:03

beardygnomechrisNYC: np, good luck21:09
GridCubechrisNYC, you should check what version of mono you need21:09
nim0_Sysi, there are only meta keys there, i want to change : max window, min window,  prev window etc etc21:10
chrisNYCit says latest, but the SMath release is about 1 year old21:10
GridCubei only have mono because i really like pinta, so :( i don't know21:11
Sysinim0_: window manager settings21:12
nim0_Sysi, yea thats the place, thx21:12
chrisNYCgridcube, thanks im going to try a restart. btw did you install mono via Ubuntu software center?21:17
Sysisurprise, compiz failed21:22
chrisNYCGridCube, Just noticed that you were right i need Mono 2.0, so i am uninstalling  4.0 now21:30
=== CiPi is now known as cipi
chrisNYCDoes anyone know how I can install an older version of software? (specifically Mono runtime 2.0)21:31
FerchoLPchrisNYC: I think that if you have the repo with the 2.0 version, you can force that version in Synaptic21:33
FerchoLPif you open the package properties and go to the "Versions" tab, there you can force different version than the latest21:34
chrisNYCok thanks fercholp21:34
scribus12Is there a way to disable abality to select different session on startup? I want it to always be xubuntu, not xfce or gnome etc.21:40
chrisNYCIf i want to run an exe file with mono runtime. should i add anything to this terminal entry:   "./file.exe"21:41
knomechrisNYC, i suppose rather 'mono file.exe' or something, but i'm not really familiar with mono21:42
chrisNYCI am getting "missing method EnableVisualStyles in assembly"21:42
chrisNYCtype System.Windows.Forms.Application21:43
knomescribus12, probably via some configuration files, but the easiest way it just not use the other sessions21:44
chrisNYCJust trying to see if I can get this program working in linux, in which case i will have everything i need to setup my laptop as a linux only machine21:45
chrisNYCSMath Studio is an nice MathCad alternative, that should work on linux21:46
scribus12knome: yeah. i'm setting this up for someone else. simpoly don't want them to get frusterated.21:46
Sysithey never need to select, just use the default21:47
knomeyeah. just tell them not to change the session, simply :)21:47
scribus12knome: yeah. I used to do tech support in the past. simply telling them not to do something simply doesn't work.21:49
knomei they go poking the session, they can just change that back to xubuntu21:50
knomeif you want a foolproof system, you probably should be looking at something much much much simpler, because people can just break things anyway.21:51
scribus12knome: the thing is - that might *uck up other thing. like I've just switched from xubuntu to xfce and back - xubuntu xfce theme got messed up and skype wouldn't start anymore.21:52
knomemaybe you should read about lightdm more then, to get those sessions disabled. btw, even obfuscated non-family-friendly words are not welcome - just saying that you know it in the future too21:53
scribus12knome: oh....didn't know you guys.... family friendly... lol21:54
knomescribus12, that's per the guidelines and code of conduct.21:56
knomescribus12, you did get a notice about the terms of service when joining the channel21:56
