If I read correctly, Wubi (1) installs Ubuntu inside Windows (2) installs Grub 2. Does Ubuntu then run inside Windows...Does Windows anti-virus still operate when running Ubuntu? On Wubi uninstall does Grub get deleted? Does Wubi install slow Win7 down enough to bother gaming? [08:03] Zaragon: Yes, Ubuntu runs inside windows like an application you install in your windows [08:04] Wubi install has no direct relationship with slowing down your machine. It depends on your machine capacity to load the Ubuntu OS [08:04] not anymore as far as I know M0hi :) it installes inside the windows-installation, but you can choose at boot-time what to boot [08:04] I always prefer to install separately though [08:04] not anymore just a virtual machine... :) [08:05] it adds itself to the windows boot menu :) [08:05] Snicksie: Ubuntu will boot. But still Ubuntu will be like an application which you can find listed in add/remove programs. (I am not sure. I've tried it before 2 years) [08:06] 2 years ago, it was... :) [08:06] Okay then. My bad ;) [08:07] i guess you can still remove it via the programs, it installs on the windows disk, but it boots completely seperately, NOT inside windows... [08:07] but still a seperate installation is preferable ;) [08:07] I have tried Ubuntu several times before....Had trouble with Logitech drivers.....Also, Wubi page mentions Grub... [08:09] Grub installed in MBR...I didn't think Win7 has MBR [08:09] Windows boot loader is there though. I think you can bring Win X back after removal [08:10] I am not sure as I never tried removing my *Buntus =) [08:10] It's better that way, M0hi....painful [08:11] and you can't sit down for about a week [08:13] Zaragon: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system/how-do-you-remove-ubuntu-and-grub/42d3f550-bf5f-459d-94ed-4cbadd7c933c [08:13] I read that Wubi installs to a virtual disk...I thought one needed a running OS to have those...am I wrong? [08:14] Virtual disk = some space in your C drive if you are using wubi. Snicksie any explanations? :P [08:14] Thats why I was thinking Wubi, M0hi...to avoid that article [08:15] But why you have to remove Ubuntu from your machine? [08:15] oh! Logitech issues [08:17] 20 years of rock cllimbing toasted the joints in my hands...now I use keyboard and mouse from Logitech....very programable.....makes typing doable [08:21] I can understand [08:24] Ergo, I want to see how far I can push Lolgitech with 3rd party progs available for linux...If I can't push it far enough, its useless on my machine...I would then want to get rid of it and still be able to sit down [08:38] to distill my questions......BIOS sees and mounts some drives...does it do that for virtual disks? and could that be done from the bootloader? [08:39] I hope BIOS finds the boot loader which is present before the MBR [08:39] s/hope/believe [08:40] I know just enough about computers to confuse the hell out of myself [08:41] he he. Its good to know something =) [08:43] well time for me to go to bed...it is getting close to 2 AM here...good night and a thank you for your assist [08:43] Good night Zaragon =) [08:44] M0hi, the disk is space in the C-drive indeedd... [08:45] Snicksie: I'm glad that you responded immediately after I asked that :P :P JK [08:45] sorry, busy :$ [08:45] he he. I was JK [08:45] im lookin' for a simple pdf-editor like my mac-pdf-editor... that one can mark inside my pdf ^^ [08:45] i like that [08:48] PDF Import Extension for Openoffice is there [08:48] http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/pdfimport [08:50] thats too many options ^^ i only want to mark my text with a colored marker like 'this part is done' :p [08:51] this channel is color disabled I believe [08:51] i guess so too, but i need to mark my pdf-text ;p [08:51] Write your own extension then :P :P [08:52] when i got time -- sure [08:52] but i dont have the time now :p === holstein_ is now known as holstein [16:01] Looking for pdf printing application that can be installed as a printer. [16:06] fosburg: with openoffice, ive always just used the export as pdf option [16:07] i see that libreoffice has that functionality as well [16:07] let me google for a pdf printer for ubuntu... [16:07] pdf printer? [16:08] can't u just print any pdf [16:08] coalwater: like.. you have a document, or anything open, and you print to a virtual printer that makes a pdf out of it [16:08] whatever "it" is [16:08] its not to print, its to render a pdf... correct fosburg ? [16:08] and im assuming its not a document or something easy... [16:08] o ok, now i get it [16:09] that sounds useful [16:09] i have used the 'draw' portion of openoffice for that [16:09] libreoffice woul provide the same functionality [16:09] i found it to have more options for saving, resizing... whatever else [16:09] looks like its easy though [16:09] http://www.tohir.co.za/2009/06/15/installing-a-pdf-printer-on-ubuntu/ [16:10] yeah, cups-pdf is in the repos for 11.10 fosburg [16:10] i would start there [16:12] Most applications have the 'export to..." but I have seen changes in the look of a document bases on the application used [16:15] cup-pdf--can you tell me more about this? [16:16] fosburg: sure... its a pdf printer [16:17] how do I install? what is the procedure? [16:17] you can see a screenshot at http://www.tohir.co.za/2009/06/15/installing-a-pdf-printer-on-ubuntu/ [16:17] fosburg: i would go to whatever package manager you use typically and search 'cups-pdf' [16:17] thank you [16:18] there are command line instructions at that link, but you can use the software center, or synaptic, or whatever you are used to using [16:35] Thanks, I used 'software center' and downloaded the cups-pdf--it worked like magic and is now one of my printers. thanks again. [16:35] fosburg: enjoy :) === yofel_ is now known as yofel [22:14] good evening and happy halloween [22:15] does anyone know how i would auto mount a partition with read write permissions through fstab [22:15] marion: you chown it afterward [22:16] marion: I know someone who wrote the book http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?&t=283131 [22:16] ubuntu forums style [22:17] depends on the partition, chown chmod will not work on fat or vtfs [22:18] and chown does not affect auto / noauto mount [22:18] bhodi may i pm you [22:18] sure
