uvirtbotNew bug: #883899 in samba "Please update to new upstream version 3.6.1" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/88389900:21
=== TheEvilPhoenix is now known as Resistance
DanaGWhenever I try to boot single-user, I get this looping:03:58
* twb waits impatiently03:59
DanaGo continue): Login incorrect. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue): Login incorrect. Give root password for maintenance03:59
twbIt loops without you typing in a password?04:00
DanaGAnd notably, each piece of that message is on a separate line, shifted right.04:00
DanaGRight.  I hit a letter, and it re-spams the prompt.04:00
twbThat sounds like plymouth has decided to rape you04:00
twbEasiest solution IMO is to boot into a live CD and either remove teh root password or remove plymouth04:00
DanaGtoo bad stuff depends on plymouth.04:00
twbThe right-shifting thing is because something has left the screen in an ncurses-flavoured state04:00
twbDanaG: "remove" as in turn off; you can't actually uninstall it :-/04:01
DanaGI've also seen it spam this:04:01
DanaGUbuntu 11.04  .  .  .  Ubuntu 11.04  .  .  .  Ubuntu 11.04  .  .  .  Ubuntu 11.04  .  .  .  Ubuntu 11.04  .  .  .  Ubuntu 11.04  .  .  .  Ubuntu 11.04  .  .  .  Ubuntu 11.04  .  .  .04:01
DanaGOn the serial console.04:01
DanaGI also figured out why my server kept crashing.... the Patriot flash drive is crashing.04:02
DanaGNow I'm torn between running the OS on my ZFS pool itself, or running it on the only non-usb-flash things I have around, which are old laptop drives.04:02
twbZFS might be OK except that osol blows and running it on linux blows04:04
twbSo I'm sitting here waiting for btrfs to get its shit together04:04
DanaGYeah, give us a fscking... fsck.  That'll actually fix things.04:05
DanaGIf I put my root on the pool, I have redundancy.  If I put it on old 20-gig laptop drive of unknown health (since SMART is only approximate)... then there's only one point of failure.04:05
twbI meant more "actually work"04:06
twbI wouldn't trust its RAID6 implementation right now04:06
DanaGRight now I just have simple mirroring.04:15
twbI'd still do it in md instead of btrfs04:15
DanaGAside from lack of packages, I didn't like how OpenIndiana gave me no indication at all of whether it was checking for ECC errors.04:15
DanaGWhereas on Linux, you see amd64_edac loading and logging.04:15
twbI wouldn't know, I'm too cheapass to get ECC hw04:16
DanaGHP Microserver.... cheap Athlon Neo.04:16
twbYou could always test by unplugging a stick while it's running ;-)04:16
DanaGtwb: safer: hold a compact fluorescent near it.04:16
twbHa04:17
DanaGI've heard that that generates lots of noise.04:17
twbI didn't want to know that :-(04:17
DanaGBut have no clue whether that's actually true.04:17
twbProbably you want an unshielded tube04:17
twbSo it bombards with beta rather than gamma04:17
twbThat is to say, get one without the phosphor lining on the glass housing04:18
DanaGI wish I knew people at HP, so I could address their sucky BIOS.  Or get a debricker so I can try CoreBoot on it.04:19
DanaGdebricker as in whatever they use to connect to their undocumented, presumably SPI, header.04:19
twbYou are lucky, man04:20
twbI deal with ARM04:20
DanaGHope you at least have real serial consoles.04:21
twbHar har04:21
DanaGI have one PCIe serial card that's IO-based, but grub doesn't see it.04:21
twbThere's a 40-pin plug which allegedly has UART on it SOMEWHERE04:21
twbI'm talking to it via an undocumented buggy nvflash program provided by the SOC vendor (nvidia)04:21
DanaGoh, and apparently HP is going to announce ARM servers.04:21
DanaGToo bad AMD doesn't do ARM. :(04:22
twbThat's probably because Windows 8 will have a hard-on for ARM04:22
twbAnd ARM64 was announced recently04:22
DanaGEew, imagine trying to get Flash for that.04:22
twbWho gives a shit about flash04:23
DanaGI don't like Flash.04:23
DanaGBut some people need it.04:23
twbEven normal users mostly only want it for youtube04:23
DanaGThere's a 32-bit Linux flash, but only recently an amd64 flash.04:23
twbPity Apple didn't kill it04:23
DanaGThere's an Android Flash, but no ARM Flash.  Despite the fact that Android IS ARM!04:23
twbDanaG: probably because it's written in java04:23
DanaGI mean, all it'd take for them to build an ARM flash: install ubuntu, install dev headers, copy source, make.04:24
DanaGThat's less effort than 64-bit would even take.04:24
twbYou're assuming their code and build system are actually well-designed and portable04:24
twbThey've probably hard-coded byte order and stuff04:25
DanaGARM is same-endian as x86, isn't it?04:25
DanaGOr at least, the ARM that Ubuntu happens to use.04:25
twbOr e.g. used uint when they meant time_t, so all the time-based calls on LSB behave differently where it it a long uint or whatever04:25
twbARM has, at least historically, had at least two versions, and IIRC also some hardware that can switch04:26
DanaGoh yeah, I do have an ARM server in my server.  Yeah, there's an IPMI card that's ARM.04:28
twbHaha04:28
twbI hate LOM cards, they're a PITA04:28
twbNooo, you couldn't just give me serial.  Instead I have to talk to you over RFB that's buried inside some shitty java tunnel that you want me to access via a goddamn web browser04:29
twbAnd then I can sit there watching you boot your in-house linux slower than the one that's on the main system04:29
DanaGOh, and the chip actually has a SOL port that I can connect to...04:29
DanaGbut isn't wired to anything.04:29
twbYeah :-/04:29
DanaGAnd I did manage to get a serial console on the card itself.  It's an ASPEED AST2150.04:30
DanaGusername "root", password "root".  Nice.  And it spews crap on the console every second, trampling all over vi and such.04:30
twbBlergh04:30
twbI hate hw04:31
DanaGI'm actually thinking of making a project with my old Xilinx FPGA board, to listen on telnet and pass the traffic to/from a serial port.04:41
twbSSH would be better04:43
twbIf your FPGA-fu is that strong04:43
DanaGwell, I'd imagine there might be an ssh server for "lwip", for the Microblaze.04:46
twbOn that subject, not a fan of most switches04:47
bogenNot really sure where to ask this question. I can't find a good howto for bootstrapping oneiric. I've used debootstrap quite a bit on older ubuntus and on debian, and I can get a working system that boots fine. However, with oneric, upstart loops on the first boot. I shut it down. Boot again, this time it does not finish, and when I press enter it continues, then the screen clears and I get the login prompt. I can then reboot and it bo05:19
twbbogen: lost you after "and it bo"05:22
twbbogen: get an IRC client that splits messages automatically, or write smaller messages05:22
bogenI took a snapshot of the disk before booting the first time, and compared it when it was booting fine, but no smoking gun. ok, I'll paste bin it.05:23
twbI don't know offhand what's wrong; you could try passing --verbose at the boot: prompt, but that's a major PITA to debug with because there's so much stuff from upstart05:24
twbdebugging upstart is a PITA in general05:24
bogenhttp://pastebin.com/pH4XAV2j05:25
twbbogen: oh, this is an LXC container?05:25
bogenno, I'm running it in KVM for now. I do that before trying on real hardware.05:26
bogenI was saying that minit looks more suited to LXC then to real hardware or a VM05:27
twbNot really, cinit and minit work fine in the real world05:27
bogenok, well, minit did not remount / rw05:27
twbBut init systems other than upstart aren't supported by ubuntu05:27
twbbogen: well, did you tell it to?05:28
twbIf you want to use something other than upstart you will need to port all the upstart (and legacy sysvinit) jobs to that init system; they aren't there automagically05:28
bogenI've never used minit, so I'd need to find where the is. I'd rather just use upstart, I just ran into problem. (not working on the first few boots)05:29
bogenwhere the telling it to remount rw05:29
bogenhmm. /run/lock not mounted05:30
bogenupstart often pauses on "settting console screen modes and fonts" until I press enter.05:32
bogenthen outputs more (too fast to read) and clears the console05:33
twbTurn that off, then05:35
twbThat'll be setupcon05:35
DanaGoh yeah, I figured out my spewing password prompt:05:35
DanaGI had ttyS4 service set to start in runlevel 1.05:35
twbDanaG: heh05:35
DanaGSo anyway, no more USB boot for me... my root is now on the pool along with the data.05:35
DanaGJust use a small USB drive for the boot files, since I didn't leave any space free on the actual pool drives for ext4.05:36
DanaGnow, how do I make an upstart job start at a lower-priority Nice value?05:38
twbDanaG: man 5 init, I think there is a specific "nice N" option, otherwise you need to fuck about05:40
twbLike "exec foo --no-daemonize" becomes "exec nice foo --no-daemonize"05:40
Tm_Ttwb: tsssk, language (;05:55
twbGrmph.  This is why I have to make up new swearwords.  Stupid wodging chumblebums...05:58
Tm_Tmy solution is not to swear (:05:58
twbThen you sound like an accountant06:01
twbAlso I'm Australian06:01
laserbledhi, can someone help me with dns and nsupdate please - when i use nsupdate to update or delete a zone it says either server fail or notzone error - I added the error log option but cant seem to get that file - have a couple of queries - in nsupdate for servername - is it the ip or nameserver that need to be fed06:02
laserbledhttp://paste2.org/p/1753534 - contains zone and named.conf06:02
laserbledhttp://paste2.org/p/1753538 this is nsupdate outputs06:03
laserbledplease tell me if I am doing something wrong06:03
twblaserbled: bleh, why even bother, just allow AXFRs from 0/006:04
laserbledtwb, am new with this- dunno what AXFRs are .. sorry06:05
* laserbled looking up AXFRs06:05
twbAXFR is DNS for "give me a dump of your whole domain"06:05
laserbledit says it not really secure - i assume it is doing it without the keys06:07
twbA shared secret isn't exactly secure either06:08
twbEspecially since you just told us what it is06:08
laserbledam just checking it in my local ;)06:08
laserbledthats not a live key06:08
twbBut who cares, AXFR just allows you to see the records you could ask for by name anyway.  It's the equivalent of not having a floor directory in your office building06:08
laserbledtwb,  okie, i il sure look into that but in the meantime could you please tell me what is wrong with that nsupdate - am i giving some values wrong ?06:10
twblaserbled: dunno about that :-)  Sorry, I use nsd.06:10
laserbledand the log files ?06:10
twbBut it sounds like it's pissed about the shared secret being different06:10
laserbledi mis typed it one - corrected it after06:11
laserbled*once06:11
twbIIRC bind allows AXFRs from 0/0 by default, although I'm not sure if -update means AXFR or NOTIFY06:11
twbI'm probably just confusing you more; sorry06:12
laserbledmainly becos am not familiar with AXFR06:12
laserbledit would be great if someone help me fix the log atleast06:13
twbdig AXFR cyber.com.au06:13
twbIt's how the slave gets an initial copy of the zone from the master06:14
twbNOTIFY is how the master tells the slave "don't worry about the expiry time, pull a new update *now*"06:14
twbNOTIFY is entirely optional, AXFR/IXFR are needed for slaves, and optional for everybody else06:14
laserbledand how do you update the master ? - manual ?06:15
twbYes06:15
twbBasically something like ssh master vi /etc/nsd/master/com.example.zone06:15
laserbledi want someway to run it as a service - thats why i was looking for the signed option so that i could add new zones dynamically06:16
twbIME the way that happens is you write a shitty PHP frontend06:26
twbOr cpanel maybe06:26
laserbledpython for me06:29
twbWhatever06:31
twbBut if I were you I'd just tell your customers to use zoneedit.com or so06:32
laserbledi think i figured out the issue, looks like a permission problem - only if i could get the dns logs :-/06:33

twblaserbled: you don't have root on your own box?07:27
laserbledya - i do - just a habit07:27
laserbledI still haven't figured out the log files :(07:28
laserbledfixed logging, yay08:15
afuenteshi, i have a server that froze. Is there a ubuntu faq somewhere about frozing? and how to hunt down the culprit? or what do i need to install to get help me the next time it freezes?08:59

RoyKanyone that knows how I can debug afpd/netatalk? after a crash last night, it suddenly hangs using 100% cpu, not serving much...11:47
RoyKcorrupt .AppleDB contents....11:57
air_RoyK: IIRC you can verify them with the dbd command.11:57
RoyKdbd: command not found11:58
RoyKoh, bdb....11:58
RoyKno, none of that either11:58
air_$ whereis dbd11:58
air_dbd: /usr/lib/dbd /usr/local/bin/dbd11:58
RoyKthe one under /usr/local/bin probably didn't come from an ubuntu package11:59
air_oh right, I installed netatalk from sources, since it was broken in 11.10.12:00
air_but dbd was included in 11.10, supposedly also in 10.04. (but I have no 10.04 with afp around)12:00
RoyKcnid_dbd, perhaps?12:01
air_probably.12:01
air_what netatalk version are you running? (I suppose ubuntu 10.04 LTS?)12:01
RoyK2.0.512:01
RoyKit's lucid, yes12:01
air_yeah, lucid's man page for dbd forwards to oneiric. http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/oneiric/en/man1/dbd.1.html12:02
RoyKI tried oneiric first, but rolled back when I found netatalk broken12:02
RoyKI just removed the broken db files and retried - works now...12:03
air_er, it's not the same thing. cnid_dbd seems to be the deamone, while dbd is for maintenance.12:03
RoyKI saw that12:04
RoyKhave you looked into how TimeMachine stores data on a network store?12:05
air_in a sparseimage? yes.12:05
RoyKseems it's using a bunch of 8MB files including a HFS+ filesystem....12:06
air_I got a timecapsule as router, so I run my timemachines against that.12:06
air_everything else on ubuntu over afp.12:07
* RoyK uses ubuntu for time machine as well12:08
RoyK5 2TB drives so far, 4 in RAID-5 and a spare...12:08
air_I've considered doing that as well.12:09
air_but since I have no other use for that time capsule. :P12:09
air_performancewise it sux, but I really don't mind for timemachine.12:09
RoyKthe time capsule doesn't offer much redundancy, though12:09
air_jep.12:10
RoyKerm - it does?12:10
air_basically it's the backup of my system drive (80gb ssd)12:10
air_but I do weekly rsyncs of the drive to ubuntu.12:10
air_+ all other content is stored on ubuntu, with backup to external usb.12:11
RoyKI have this home server and then a backblaze account for secondary backup12:12
RoyKshould be safe enough :P12:12
air_I could use some offsite backup, so I'll look into backblaze. :)12:13
air_do you get good throughput there?12:13
RoyKit's ok12:13
RoyKbut not very fast12:13
RoyKremember to yank up the throttler after installing it12:13
RoyKand - backblaze doesn't support linux yet, which sucks12:14
air_oh.12:14
air_then I don't want it.12:15

uvirtbotNew bug: #776818 in vde2 (universe) "[MIR] vde2" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/77681815:16
kpettitcan anybody recommend me a good router/gateway/vpn that does a good job of providing VPN to Windows/Linux/Mac15:17
kpettitI've been having a hard time finding a decent one that works well for Win7/Ubuntu.15:18
virusuykpettit: what about Fortinet15:28
kpettitvirusuy, I haven't heard of that one.  Google'ing now15:30
virusuykpettit: got a lot of differents appliances15:31
kpettitI just bought a netgear VPN with ipsec and SSL/VPN.  The SSL VPN is pretty cool becuase it's clientless and works through browser java applet or IE active X stuff.  But has quirks15:31
virusuykpettit: oh, i sorry, i didn't ask if it was for a company or just for your home15:32
kpettitBoth.  I'm doing IT for a couple small companies and was trying to find a good one to use for my home network as well.15:32
virusuyoh, if it's just home network, what about a linksys with ddwrt ?15:33
kpettitI looked for that fist.  but couldn't find any decent hardware that already came with ddwrt.  I hate hacking a $100 device for something like that.  I'd rather just pay the extra $100 for something that already has what I need.15:33
virusuykpettit: sound reasonable..15:34
kpettitI do love the dd-wrt project.  I wish the had some commercial version on decent hardware, I'd buy a few of them for sure15:34
virusuykpettit: yeah, me too.15:35
virusuyi mean, if you buy a linksys wrt54G will work pretty decent with ddwrt - full version15:35
kpettitThey suck rocks if you put much vpn traffic through it.15:36
virusuyreally ?15:36
virusuyi used with 2 clients only15:36
kpettitI used to use them for bridging VoIP networks.  They really had a hard time if you tried more than one VPN connection at a time.15:36
virusuyi mean 2 connections at the same time15:36
virusuyoh well, then you take a look at those appliance15:37
iclebytekpettit, look at pfsense15:37
kpettitIt was OK for simple client to connect in for VPN but if you tried to do a small office's network through one on VPN it didn't have the horsepower15:37
virusuythey're really cool, or at least i used in 3 differents enviorments and works awesome15:37
kpettiticlebyte, thanks.  Looking at it now...15:37
iclebytekpettit, http://www.netgate.com/ <-- they do some more powerfull hardware which you can run pfsense on15:38
kpettitvirusuy, yeah for most smaller stuff they are fine, but if you have a very big load or need to use it's little processor it's going to suck15:38
iclebytemight fit the bill a bit more than wrt15:38
kpettitThat's why I wish they had better hardware for it, or sold something designed for heaver load15:38
iclebytekpettit, it's a hobbist thing.. pfsense is probably a  bit better for production15:39
kpettiticlebyte, know of any good hardware that works with it.  Trying to avoid getting a full on linux server just for firewall/gateway/vpn stuff15:39
iclebytekpettit, http://www.netgate.com/15:39
kpettitah nice.  Thanks15:40

tonyyarussoI have a fresh Ubuntu 11.10 server with a grub issue.  It won't boot non-interactively - the grub timeout seems to be being set to -1 even though it's defined as 2 in /etc/default/grub.  It looks like /boot/grub/grub.cfg has a section to do this if something goes wrong, but I don't know why that would be invoked.15:52

hydromethi this may seem like a question with an obvious answer, but with so many web pages around to peruse through, I just wanted to be sure that these four step instructions I should follow for upgrading an Ubuntu 9.10 Server amd64 to 10.04 Server amd64:18:20
hydromethttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/LucidUpgrades#Network_Upgrade_for_Ubuntu_Servers_.28Recommended.2918:20
hydrometit seems almost too simple and I'm concerned that there might be more to it than those four steps18:20
hydrometthis is also for a headless (no desktop) Ubunutu server18:21

=== Guest45150 is now known as lau
SpamapShydromet: no it really is that easy18:28
SpamapShydromet: I'm not sure if 9.10 had the cool feature where it spawns a second sshd just in case the primary gets killed, but I know current releases do that.18:28
* SpamapS upgraded his 11.04 EC2 instance to 11.10 with the same steps just recently18:29
cwillu_at_worka second ssh doesn't help with that post-upgrade reboot :p18:31
SpamapScwillu_at_work: indeed.. but ultimately, what does other than remote console? ;)18:35
cwillu_at_workSpamapS, at which point, who needs the second sshd? :)18:36
SpamapScwillu_at_work: its for the times where the ongoing upgrade fails hard18:37
cwillu_at_workSpamapS, but... you have remote console18:37
cwillu_at_workit's like complaining that btrfs doesn't have fsck, so what will you do if it breaks?18:38
SpamapScwillu_at_work: often much easier to just ssh -P xxxx than fire up the remote console, but I see your point.18:38
cwillu_at_workSpamapS, exactly.18:38
SpamapSbasically "meh, get remote consoles"18:38
cwillu_at_workif it's more than a convenience, you're in deeper than you think18:39
hydrometSpamapS; thank you, I'm really glad to know that its as easy as those steps provided, even if the SSH connection gets terminated that's not the end of the world (I have physical access to my machine if I should need it though I would prefer not to plug in a KVM)18:47
cwillu_at_workhydromet, it varies though18:56
cwillu_at_workif you generally do things properly re: settings and so forth, and any universe/third-party packages all work properly, it's generally pretty smooth18:56
cudgelis this the proper channel for discussion of cloud-init related topics?18:58
cwillu_at_workcudgel, if you had asked the actual question, whether this is the proper channel would be clearer :p18:59
cudgelfair enough.  how do I make use of LVM2 through cloud-init?  I've got a custom cloud-boothook, that does the work of pvcreate, vgcreate, even carves out a swap volume.  However, not sure how exactly I should deal with the default mounts.19:00
cudgelfor instance:19:00
cudgelin my cloud-config, I have:  mounts:19:01
cudgel - [ ephemeral0, null ]19:01
cudgel - [ swap, null ]19:01
cudgel(sorry for the spam paste there)19:01
cudgelyet, with those entries, /etc/fstab is still updated w/ swap and /mnt entries.19:01
cudgelpresumably, I can modify that swap line to use the right volume I'm creating.  But…  not sure how to deal with /mnt19:02
cudgelhow's that?  more clear?  proper channel? :)19:02
JanCcudgel: certainly more useful for people to decide if they can answer (I can't)19:05
JanCcudgel: #ubuntu-cloud might be useful to19:05
cudgelash, interesting, I didn't see that channel in the list.  I'll check it out!19:05
cudgelah.  not ash.  fingers = fat.19:06

TakyojiAnyone know of a way to remotely deploy Evolution configs for users? Or perhaps with Thunderbird, or?23:15
twbTakyoji: on a single LAN, from a server to a bunch of linux workstations?23:17
twbTakyoji: do the users' get their $HOME from the server?23:17
Takyojitheir /home folder is via NFS23:18
twbYou can probably just edit files in /home if it comes to that23:18
twbMost of the MUA config will be user-local23:18
Takyojithat's what I'm thinking; I'm just not sure if Evolution has secret little binary config files or similar23:19
TakyojiI was also worrying about password config, but I guess I'd just have the users save enter their passwords (or have it remembered by the keyring daemon)23:19
twbWhat I do for tbird, since I control the desktop SOE, is to put stuff in /usr/lib/thunderbird-*/greprefs/all.js23:19
twbhttp://paste.debian.net/142197/23:20
TakyojiPssh, you and your convenient lambda scripts. :P23:21
hydrometSpamapS: just wanted you to know that indeed Ubuntu Server 9.10 amd64, when upgrading to 10.04, spawns a second SSH daemon in case of failure / emergency. This is great, it made my day and was easier than I expected (keep in mind, the Microsoft dominated world train people into thinking things have to be overly complex). How refreshing Ubuntu is!23:41
twbdru *is* overly complex23:43
