SIR_TacoMooqi: It depends I guess... some cards like Nvidia and ATI/AMD have programs that can help with the problem, if not, then it depends on what your larger monitor can handle for a resolution (some large screens can't handle smaller resolutions in a nice way)00:00
Num83rGuyInstalling00:00
MooqiSIR_Taco: so this means there is no "easy" way by changing something in the system configuration? i mean, i can only compare it to windows and here i am using a large tv and a small flatscreen with an extended desktop just fine. anyways: would you recommend searching for a ubuntu specific software when i know what gfx card the notebook uses?00:02
SIR_TacoMooqi: Xinermama is one to look for (if it's not already installed), but you need to realize that just because your TV might be 60 inches... the resolution might be equal to or less than your 19 inch monitor....00:04
SIR_Taco**Xinerama00:04
MooqiSIR_Taco: okay, I understand. thx for your help! i will test this prog tomorrow.00:05
SIR_TacoMooqi: not a problem00:05

Num83rGuyNo sound00:34
Num83rGuyI made sure they were plugged in to the right one too.00:36
phoenix_firebrdNum83rGuy: run alsamixer in terminal00:36
eristikophileshad 2 different burns of the installer cd (x64, 11.10) fail at the same point. every time i try to tell it to assign / to a specific drive partition it fails. disk check reveals no errors though00:36
Num83rGuyOK alsamixer is up.00:37
SIR_Tacoeristikophiles: which disk check did you do?00:38
eristikophilesthe one included with the cd00:39

SIR_Tacoeristikophiles: that checks the CD, not your hard drive... are you sure your harddrive is good?00:41
eristikophilesi'm trying to install on a drive that had a really buggy ubuntu system on it, doing a clean wipe.00:41
eristikophilesyeah i'll try and see if the dvd installer can check the hd00:42
phoenix_firebrdNum83rGuy: if you dont mind can you paste a snapshot of your alsamixer00:42
Num83rGuyphoenix_firebrd: OK it's open.00:42
SIR_Tacoeristikophiles: if the pervious install was wonky, and your new install wont work... makes me think you have harddrive issues00:42
SIR_Tacoeristikophiles: possibly RAM issues, but more likely HD issues00:43
phoenix_firebrdNum83rGuy: you there?00:45
Num83rGuyYes up loading screen shot.00:46

eristikophiles..which isn't like, heavy anymore (10 y/o game) but it'd definitely crash if there were RAM issues00:47

phoenix_firebrdSIR_Taco: so can you help Num83rGuy /02:18
phoenix_firebrdSIR_Taco: i am going to take a break02:18
SIR_Tacook02:20
eristikophilesok, question: at the installer, after selecting manual partitioning, at the bottom it has a selector for "Boot loader" where you choose which /dev to put it in.. you're supposed to use whatever is /boot, or whatever the base /dev is? should i pick /dev/sdb or /dev/sdb2 (which will be /root)?02:22
rotsyguys02:23
rotsyhow do you install drupal on kubuntu ?02:23
SIR_Tacoeristikophiles: intalling with an existing install?02:24
eristikophilesi wiped the old data on the drive02:24
eristikophiles..there is windows on the other drive (i'm assigning its partitions mount points as /xppro /seven and /winstor02:25
SIR_Tacorotsy: which drupal are you wanting to install and which version of kubuntu do you have?02:25
SIR_Tacoeristikophiles: then the boot partition is on your linux drive, but if it asks where to boot from (using the MBR) it's likely from your windows disk... which I would assume (from before) being your first disk02:27
eristikophileshm. i read on a forum post that i should *not* select the first drive, because then grub will overwrite my windows MBR02:28
eristikophilesalso, i will need to have it intact to install win7 later02:28
eristikophiles..i would do that first but i don't have it yet02:28
SIR_Tacoeristikophiles: you do or don't have windows on the machine now?02:28
eristikophilesyeah i do02:28
eristikophilesthere's one drive for windows. it's all windows. there's a different hd for kubuntu to use02:29
eristikophilesanyway, specifically, what i want to know is this: do i select the device as a whole or the specific partition as the 'boot loader' site?02:29
SIR_Tacoif you alter the MBR, the worst case is that Windows over-writes it...  and you'll have to change it later02:29
eristikophileslike, /dev/sdb or /dev/sdb202:30
eristikophilesno, windows won't touch a grub MBR02:30
eristikophilesi've had that happen before. it will just fail to boot02:30
SIR_Tacoyea ok02:30
eristikophilesanyway, you're not answering my actual question dude02:30
SIR_Tacoeristikophiles: you're talking about a fresh new install I gather?02:31
eristikophilesyeah02:31
eristikophilesfor kubuntu yes02:31
SIR_Tacoif you don't care about losing any information on the drive than just partition it as you want, or just stick with the defaults02:32
eristikophiles*sigh* no you don't get it. the partitioner wants input. it wants me to select from a list of devices02:33
eristikophilesit has both /dev/sdb and all the partitions on that device02:33
eristikophilesis 'boot loader' to be put on the device itself, or a partition?02:33
eristikophilesthat's all i want to know!02:33
redeightu think there is any way to fix the USB not working after resume from sleep bug?02:33
eristikophilesredeight- don't let it sleep?02:33
redeightand there we have it! problem solved!02:34
redeight:)02:34
eristikophileslol. sorry redeight .. i can't think of a better way to avoid the issue though02:34
eristikophilesSIR_Taco- you still there?02:34
SIR_TacoOh yea I'm still here02:35
eristikophilesi'm getting a bit frustrated because the installer tends to crash at this point in the process02:35
eristikophilesif i can manage to pass over this bit and get to the next step, it might not crash.. so..02:35
eristikophilesyeah02:35
eristikophilesso far the install DVD works better than the CD did. it only crashed once, and it's not crashing just from selecting stuff02:35
eristikophilesbut i would like an answer02:35
SIR_Tacothe "boot loader" is a program02:36
rotsySIR_taco I'm installing drupal 7.902:36
rotsyon kubuntu 11.1002:36
SIR_Tacorotsy: then you'll have to download it and extract it manually... they should have a step-by-step how-to on the Drupal site02:37
rotsyok thanks02:37
eristikophilesok, i actually found an old forum post about this somewhere, but only after typing a truly ridiculously complicated search pattern (not a more refined one, just one that's kinda silly)02:38
SIR_Tacoeristikophiles: (not trying to be an ass, because I have no idea what you do or do not know)Do you understand what Grub is about and what it needs?02:38
eristikophilesyeah, i know what grub is02:39
eristikophilesit's ok02:39
eristikophilesthe issue is more that the installer app has the option to select /dev/sdb rather than a specific partition02:40
SIR_Tacoeristikophiles: it's offering you sdb for which option?02:40
eristikophilesthere's just a stupid thing saying "boot loader" at the bottom02:40
eristikophilesit doesn't explain anything.02:41
SIR_Tacois there an "advanced" option?02:41
eristikophilesno02:41
eristikophilesthis apparently is advanced. it's the manual option for partitioning02:41
eristikophilesi set the partition tables like i want02:41
eristikophiles(actually i did that earlier in kde's partition manager app)02:42
SIR_Tacoeristikophiles: so you've already set the paritions as you want?02:42
eristikophilesit seems to be installing fine02:42
eristikophilesyeah, i just don't understand why it wants a distinct 'where do i put the boot loader' selection lol02:42
eristikophiles..i'm thinking that either 1) the boot loader will be placed on /dev/sdb itself in an area i don't see as a partition, but the BIOS will see, or 2) the boot loader goes in /boot and is stored in normal drive space02:43
eristikophilesi figured 1 will work because the forum post i read said to use it that way02:44
eristikophilesi'm only a bit worried that i should have perhaps left some space to the beginning of /dev/sdb1 in order for it to fit, but maybe it does that automatically02:44
eristikophilesi mean we're talking a few kb here right?02:44
SIR_Tacoeristikophiles: for recovery reason, it's suggested to have your boot image on a separate partition. (specifically on a seperate hard drive.... if it were to fail, you'd still be able to boot and hopefully recover data)02:44
eristikophilesyeah, i have /dev/sdb1 as swap, /dev/sdb2 as /boot, /dev/sdb4 is extended (number skipped)- inside is /dev/sdb5-7 which are /, /home, and /stor02:45
eristikophilesi like to use a /stor partition for my actual data02:45
playuh_jdTorch: The moment has arrived! I'm about to test the transfer02:46
SIR_Tacoeristikophiles: yes, but since they're all on the same HD... you're screwed if the drive dies02:46
eristikophilesi did that on my netbook and it's so much nicer to know that i can say, install kubuntu clean over everything yet not lose normal stored data, just apps and settings at most02:46
eristikophileswell i can't do much about that really02:47
eristikophilesi try to keep backups :)02:47
eristikophilesanyway this particular box i'm setting up has another drive, which runs windows, and works fine02:47
eristikophilesso i should at the least be able to figure a way to boot windows and take a look and see what the linux drive is like02:47
SIR_Tacoeristikophiles: there aren't much non-paid linux FS stuff for Windows02:48
eristikophilesyeah, that's really more of a last resort. i'd probably end up having to pull the drive out, stick it in a usb enclosure, and look at it on this box02:49
eristikophileslol02:49
SIR_Tacoor use a LiveCD02:50
eristikophilesmy old winbox died (blown PSU i think, but no time to really mess with it for awhile). i did that to its drives. they both work fine02:50
eristikophilesheh, yeah. there is that. it actually has built-in DVD drives02:50
eristikophiles..my other boxen i just plug in one with usb02:50

eristikophileshaha totally broke it. boots only to the grub rescue prompt...03:01
eristikophilestime to fix03:01
Num83rGuy_SIR_Taco: I booted into both a 11.04 and an 11.10 live CD of Kubuntu and the sound does work with the speakers untill I touch the test button in the phonon kcm. At which time all sound output stops untill reboot.03:28
Num83rGuy_SIR_Taco: I also purged pulse and reenabled the on board audio. The speakers still did not work on the SB but, did with the on board audio with the execption of Chrome03:29
mr-richNum83rGuy_: have you picked your default aduio device in Phonon?03:31
Num83rGuy_SIR_Taco: I then reinstalled pulse and now I am back to square one sound from the SB front headphone jack and no where else.03:31
Num83rGuy_mr-rich: Yes03:31
mr-richNum83rGuy_: you moved the default device up to the top and SAVED/APPLIED the settings?03:32
Num83rGuy_SIR_Taco: In fact the on board audio has disapeared from the list of cards after I reinstalled pulse.03:32
Num83rGuy_mr-rich: Yes03:32
mr-richNum83rGuy_: just checking ... :)03:32
Num83rGuy_mr-rich: The SB Audugy card refuses to output from the rear and now the on board audio is gone though I reenabled it in BIOS.03:33
Num83rGuy_mr-rich: We have been trying for hours to get it to work.03:34
logicalmelthello03:34
Num83rGuy_mr-rich: I would set pulse on fire and laugh at it if it were a physical thing.03:35

mr-richNum83rGuy_: you and me both ...03:35

eristikophilesmaybe ask an ircop?06:59
andyccOkay, I have another stupid question: is there a way to speed up resuming from standby in Kubuntu? It currently takes about 20 seconds for Plasma to become responsive after resuming and unlocking the screen.07:00
eristikophilesandycc- what kind of hard drive do you have? also how much RAM?07:02
eristikophileshard drive spin speed could be more significant than any software issue here07:02
eristikophilesthat assumes you've left it on standby for long enough to stop spinning the hd07:03
eristikophilesmight check power settings for that07:03
andycceristikophiles: I doubt hardware is at fault. Fedora with Gnome 3 fully resumes in about 8 seconds, and Ubuntu in about 12. Kubuntu takes around 30 in total, more or less.07:03
eristikophilesalso, if your system is slow, or you just don't care about stuff like animations, install low-fat07:04
eristikophilesi just locked my system then unlocked it.07:04
eristikophilesit took about .5 seconds to come back07:04
semitoneseristikophiles: are you able to join? maybe you could ask "how can a user appeal a ban"07:04
eristikophilessure, if anyone's there.07:05
eristikophileswhich it doesn't look like07:05
andycceristikophiles: well, yeah, but I'm resuming here, not unlocking - the hardware needs to be restarted and everything.07:05
semitonesthanks. #kde?07:05
eristikophilesi asked for you but not sure whether any reply tonight07:05
eristikophilesyeah i know #kde07:05

eristikophilesandycc- ok true. but more aptly, on my netbook the resume speed is like, a full second maybe07:06
eristikophilesi'm guessing that my power settings aren't like yours07:06
eristikophilesthat you turn off more things than i do07:06

=== 15SABUYRW is now known as voodoo123x
saulusBluesKaj: I plug my extern HDD in. It gets mounted as /media/hdd with 700. I want to share a subfolder via samba. Only the user can access it, not the anonymous user mapping to nobody14:23
BluesKajsaulus, share the password maybe?14:27
saulusno way! Its a password ;-)14:30
BluesKajI use samba at times to access my other linuxbox, but I'm not really familar with samba permissions , saulus , guess i should have let your question pass14:30
saulusthx anyway BluesKaj. I know a bit about samba. You always have to care about two different parts: The samba settings and the linux setting. When the samba setting is good and it does not work, then it is because its failing on the linux side. In my case the authentication in samba succeeds and the mapping is done to the user "nobody". This user then tries to access the shares. Thus the shares need +xr for "nobody". But automount does14:34
saulusre14:37
BluesKajsaulus, i use ssh to access my other box mostly and nfs-server on this one so the export/home/user file is mounted with fstab14:39
saulusBluesKaj: thats pretty straightforward but does not work in a heterogenuous network. Yesterday I had the need to access some files via my android device, tomorrow windows clients will access it. Thus nfs is not the perfect candidate for that. It would be so easy with samba if the automount procedure would not mount the hdd with 600 but with 644 permissions.14:42

BluesKajsaulus, can't the user give permissions to nobody +rx15:41

sluckxzsome decent stuff around comment #15 16 1718:24
BluesKajsluckxz, it has alot to do with the audio drivers that alsa can access , pulseaudio is defualt so some cards work well with it and others don't due to direct access alsa gives to the soundmodules and in some cases paulseaudio blocks that access . ...basically hit and miss18:30

But when I go into the Development menu there's nothing there and when I re-open the "KDE Menu Editor" my entry has disappeared? What's going on?22:30

Snuggles88:-)23:53
HulkHoganSnuggles88: yes u can do that, but now Virtual Workspace has those features also23:53

HulkHoganSnuggles88: yes23:57

HulkHoganbut Activity can contain Workspaces, but Workspaces does not contain Activtity23:58
