Max_StoneIs there any way to put a package for 11.04 on a USB drive and take it home? I'm running a Windows 7 laptop and I think #ubuntu said that I can't do that.04:09
holsteinMax_Stone: sure.. you want the .deb, and whatever dependancies, which might be harder to track down04:11
Max_StoneOkay...04:11
Max_StoneShould I Google for the .deb?04:12
holsteinyou might want to consider this in the long run04:13
holsteinhttp://blog.mypapit.net/2006/08/get-ubuntu-repositories-on-dvd.html04:13
Max_StoneThat is awesome04:16
Max_StoneThanks :)04:16
holsteinMax_Stone: http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/ for example04:16
holsteinjust drill down there and you'll find the .debs04:16
holsteinhttp://packages.ubuntu.com/ might be helpful as well04:17
holsteinim assuming you are on 11.10...04:17
Unit193!offline04:17
ubot2If you need to download Ubuntu packages using another machine or OS, check the desired packages in Synaptic and select File > Generate package download script. Alternatively, try http://ubottu.com/ljl/apt/ - See also !APTonCD04:17
holsteinnice... i didnt realize synaptic did that ubot204:18
Unit193Or take a look at  apt-offline04:18
holsteinUnit193: *04:18
holsteinhave you tried it?04:18
Unit193I would be more likly to use apt-offline, but I haven't needed to yet04:18
Max_StoneI have 11.0404:18
* holstein talks to botz :/04:18
holsteinMax_Stone: i would use that download gernerator in synaptic04:19
holsteinthat'll take care of the dependancies i was mentioning04:19
Max_StoneOkay. It's really getting to be a pain not having internet at home lol04:20
Max_StoneAppreciate all the help ^.^04:20
duanedesignhello holstein04:22
holsteinduanedesign: o/04:22
Max_StoneI can't use the repository site that the jigdo page points to, it's a language I don't recognize :(04:37
Max_StoneOh snap it's Indonesian04:39
holsteinMax_Stone: i just hit the 'translate' button and did OK04:41
holsteinbut, im sure there are other places04:41
holsteinand you dont *have* to download the entire repos04:41
holsteinits just an idea04:41
Max_StoneI'm looking at the packages.ubuntu.com page but I can't tell what I should grab...04:50
Max_StoneI'm assuming something in the updates section04:50
holsteinyeah, doing it from synaptic is the way to go Max_Stone04:52
holsteinyou'll just search what you want, and it'll mark all the dependancies04:52
Max_StoneOkay04:52
holsteinyou say 'generate download script' and you get a file with wget commands in it04:53
holsteinyou can use them with a live CD when you are out or with windows... whatever you decide04:53
Max_StoneOkay, I'll have to do it with Windows04:53
Max_Stoneg2g, be back when I can. Hopefully a couple days.04:55
Max_StoneThanks again04:55

marionok if i let it choose the linux with ubuntu 3.0.0 the screen just goes black so i have to scroll down to previous versions of linux15:59

MarionVdoes anyone know how to get the 3.0.0-12 generic kernel to support ati radeon20:10
nlsthznMarionV: Where you able to edit your Grub2?20:11
MarionVi couldnt figure out how to get into it20:12
nlsthznMarionV: I posted this link http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 just after you left :p20:14
nlsthznIt has all you need to know about editing Grub2...20:14
nlsthznAs for getting Radeon's to play wiht the new kernel I don't know... hang about and see if one of the Guru's sees it and assists ;)20:15
MarionVwill linux recognise my motherboard graphics card?20:16
nlsthznMarionV: I guess that would depend on what it is... a easy way to get past most booting issues with gfx cards is to add "nomodeset" to the kernel argument when booting...20:18
MarionVis there a way to uninstall a kernal21:54
holsteinMarionV: there are lots of ways21:54
holsteini would open synaptic and search linux21:54
MarionVwell i wanna uninstall 3.0.021:54
holsteinthen, i would look at just why you want to remove it21:54
holsteini would suggest keeping 2, the current one, and the last one that worked21:55
MarionVcause it wont recognize my ati radeon21:55
MarionVhow do i open synaptic21:57
holsteinMarionV: i would typically find it in the menu and click on it21:57
holsteinbut, im not sure about how to navigate unity if thats what you are using21:57
philipballewi can help wit unity21:58
philipballewIn unity you click on the Ubunto logo on the left side on the launcher bar21:58
philipballewa dash appears and type your application21:58
philipballewhands it back to holstein21:58
holsteinhehe21:59
MarionVwhat is unity21:59
MarionVeverything is basic21:59
holsteinMarionV: it is potentially the user interface you are using21:59
holsteindepending on what versino of ubuntu you are using21:59
holsteinim assuing 11.10 with a 3.x kernel21:59
MarionV11.10 with and i am using the 2.6.38 kernel21:59
MarionVcause the 3.0.0 kernel wont load22:00
holsteinMarionV: look for a bug report to follow up on22:00
MarionVi cant find one22:00
holsteinsucks when theres a regression like that22:00
holsteinMarionV: make a new one then, if you want22:00
MarionVhow do i do that22:01
holsteini would start with https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs22:01
holsteinit can be challenging to get started, but for you, it would be benificial22:02
holsteinpotentially22:02
* philipballew needs to report more bugs22:02

notreallyherephilipballew, wanted you to know I got my problem resolved. A friend suggested using the USB install Ubuntu 11.10 to do an UPGRADE of the 11.04 that was hanging up on boot. That seems to have resolved the issues23:17
philipballewnice! Usb is faster anyway then a cd23:17
