=== Axlin_ is now known as Axlin [04:09] Is there any way to put a package for 11.04 on a USB drive and take it home? I'm running a Windows 7 laptop and I think #ubuntu said that I can't do that. [04:11] Max_Stone: sure.. you want the .deb, and whatever dependancies, which might be harder to track down [04:11] Okay... [04:12] Should I Google for the .deb? [04:13] you might want to consider this in the long run [04:13] http://blog.mypapit.net/2006/08/get-ubuntu-repositories-on-dvd.html [04:16] That is awesome [04:16] Thanks :) [04:16] Max_Stone: http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/ for example [04:16] just drill down there and you'll find the .debs [04:17] http://packages.ubuntu.com/ might be helpful as well [04:17] im assuming you are on 11.10... [04:17] !offline [04:17] If you need to download Ubuntu packages using another machine or OS, check the desired packages in Synaptic and select File > Generate package download script. Alternatively, try http://ubottu.com/ljl/apt/ - See also !APTonCD [04:18] nice... i didnt realize synaptic did that ubot2 [04:18] Or take a look at apt-offline [04:18] Unit193: * [04:18] have you tried it? [04:18] I would be more likly to use apt-offline, but I haven't needed to yet [04:18] I have 11.04 [04:18] * holstein talks to botz :/ [04:19] Max_Stone: i would use that download gernerator in synaptic [04:19] that'll take care of the dependancies i was mentioning [04:20] Okay. It's really getting to be a pain not having internet at home lol [04:20] Appreciate all the help ^.^ [04:22] hello holstein [04:22] duanedesign: o/ [04:37] I can't use the repository site that the jigdo page points to, it's a language I don't recognize :( [04:39] Oh snap it's Indonesian [04:41] Max_Stone: i just hit the 'translate' button and did OK [04:41] but, im sure there are other places [04:41] and you dont *have* to download the entire repos [04:41] its just an idea [04:50] I'm looking at the packages.ubuntu.com page but I can't tell what I should grab... [04:50] I'm assuming something in the updates section [04:52] yeah, doing it from synaptic is the way to go Max_Stone [04:52] you'll just search what you want, and it'll mark all the dependancies [04:52] Okay [04:53] you say 'generate download script' and you get a file with wget commands in it [04:53] you can use them with a live CD when you are out or with windows... whatever you decide [04:53] Okay, I'll have to do it with Windows [04:55] g2g, be back when I can. Hopefully a couple days. [04:55] Thanks again [04:55] holstein, klattu barada niktu Just finished watching the day the earth stood still lol. :D [04:56] urlin2u: :) === M0hi is now known as IAmNotThatGuy === yofel_ is now known as yofel [15:50] good morning/afternoon/evening depending on where ever you are [15:52] so for some reason after i went from 11.04 to 11.10 i have to choose a previous version of linux when i boot [15:57] marion: ? Explain a bit more please... [15:59] ok if i let it choose the linux with ubuntu 3.0.0 the screen just goes black so i have to scroll down to previous versions of linux [15:59] before it automaticaly boots [16:06] would you mind walking me through that process [16:07] I haven't ever needed to edit grub2, I can have a look if you would like :) [16:07] you can do that i have a user in the Xubuntu channel helping out too [16:07] thanks nothingspecial ... at work so I am wheeling between this PC and my panel :p [16:07] cause i have to boot vmlinuz-2.6.38-12-generic [16:07] instead of /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-13-generic [16:10] * nothingspecial is looking :) [16:11] i found something but the command it said to use is bogus [16:16] marion, like I said I have never done this. Are you comfortable with moving stuff about with the command line and editing config files? [16:16] http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 for nothingspecial and marion ... [16:16] thanks to drs305 [16:17] he's one of the grub masters :) [16:18] marion follow that guide :) [16:27] Hello room [16:29] me [16:30] Guess you're a diver? :D [16:30] Scuba, not cliff. [19:06] sick [19:06] all weekend [19:06] 39ÂșC fever [19:06] sucks [19:15] :/ [19:16] ? [20:10] does anyone know how to get the 3.0.0-12 generic kernel to support ati radeon [20:11] MarionV: Where you able to edit your Grub2? [20:12] i couldnt figure out how to get into it [20:14] MarionV: I posted this link http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 just after you left :p [20:14] It has all you need to know about editing Grub2... [20:15] As for getting Radeon's to play wiht the new kernel I don't know... hang about and see if one of the Guru's sees it and assists ;) [20:16] will linux recognise my motherboard graphics card? [20:18] MarionV: I guess that would depend on what it is... a easy way to get past most booting issues with gfx cards is to add "nomodeset" to the kernel argument when booting... [21:54] is there a way to uninstall a kernal [21:54] MarionV: there are lots of ways [21:54] i would open synaptic and search linux [21:54] well i wanna uninstall 3.0.0 [21:54] then, i would look at just why you want to remove it [21:55] i would suggest keeping 2, the current one, and the last one that worked [21:55] cause it wont recognize my ati radeon [21:57] how do i open synaptic [21:57] MarionV: i would typically find it in the menu and click on it [21:57] but, im not sure about how to navigate unity if thats what you are using [21:58] i can help wit unity [21:58] In unity you click on the Ubunto logo on the left side on the launcher bar [21:58] a dash appears and type your application [21:58] hands it back to holstein [21:59] hehe [21:59] what is unity [21:59] everything is basic [21:59] MarionV: it is potentially the user interface you are using [21:59] depending on what versino of ubuntu you are using [21:59] im assuing 11.10 with a 3.x kernel [21:59] 11.10 with and i am using the 2.6.38 kernel [22:00] cause the 3.0.0 kernel wont load [22:00] MarionV: look for a bug report to follow up on [22:00] i cant find one [22:00] sucks when theres a regression like that [22:00] MarionV: make a new one then, if you want [22:01] how do i do that [22:01] i would start with https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs [22:02] it can be challenging to get started, but for you, it would be benificial [22:02] potentially [22:02] * philipballew needs to report more bugs [22:03] im going to try and get in on 12.04, the LTS [22:03] im upgrading to 12.04 this week I think [22:03] apparently pre alpha is out [22:03] yeah, i was thinking about grabbing a daily :) [22:04] * philipballew will be emailing holstein tonight [22:14] hello holstein [22:14] hello duanedesign [22:14] holstein: are you on the Beginners Team Mailing List? [22:14] Hello philipballew [22:14] * philipballew knows he is not holstein [22:14] :) [22:15] doing good philipballew ? [22:15] i experienced my first earthquake yesterday [22:15] I think so, I am just doing laundry and doind some ubuntu newsletter summeries [22:15] What was the magnitute [22:16] 5.8 [22:16] it was pretty mild [22:17] * philipballew is born and raised in California [22:17] I think I felt a 5.8 when i was taking a shower today [22:18] :) [22:18] * philipballew just messing duanedesign [22:18] duanedesign, noone has emailed me asking for an interview [22:18] they are to darn humble [22:19] i waswi have been trying to pay extra attention to who has been giving support [22:20] I was thinking of doing like 5 to 10 people or so [22:20] and was going to try and invite some active folks to participate in your great idea [22:23] It came to me when I was in a UDS session. It seemed like a obvious idea that i had been missing or something [22:25] and I dont have many ways to help, so i figured there, I can do something small like that. Its not much, but it might do something [22:28] philipballew: it is an awesome idea [22:28] philipballew: their was a session at uds about making community more obvious [22:28] I was there duanedesign remotely. [22:29] calling attention to all those great people who give their time to help others and ask for nothing in return [22:29] It was a really good session imo [22:29] * duanedesign nods [22:30] * philipballew nods back [23:17] philipballew, wanted you to know I got my problem resolved. A friend suggested using the USB install Ubuntu 11.10 to do an UPGRADE of the 11.04 that was hanging up on boot. That seems to have resolved the issues [23:17] nice! Usb is faster anyway then a cd
