[02:29] #ubuntu is no help atm; anyone around? [02:29] [Sat 2011-11-05 06:57:48 PM PDT] is it possible to upgrade from natty to oneiric from the dvd? [02:30] Faqtotum, whats up [02:30] ^ [02:30] ahh... sprry [02:30] *sorry [02:30] You can use a alternate cd [02:30] do you know what that is? [02:31] so the alternate cd can do it but the dvd can't? [02:31] Ubuntu comes on a cd? [02:31] the alternate cd is a cd, so obviously yes [02:32] i burned the dvd iso [02:32] the dvd is the desktop cd and the alternate cd in one [02:32] Yeah, if I were wanting to upgrade from removable media I would use the alternate iso [02:32] as would i [02:33] but everyone kept saying the dvd was everything both cd's were [02:33] Maybe, I have not herd that. but I am not that smart [02:34] do you have the alternate cd handy to check? [02:36] https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OneiricUpgrades#Upgrading_Using_the_Alternate_CD.2BAC8-DVD [02:36] tried that [02:36] there is no such file [02:36] Nice! [02:37] Ubuntu is awesome! [02:37] I wonder how old that doc is then [02:37] teehee [02:37] https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+question/174317 [02:37] even better [02:38] whats wrong with do release upgrade just wondering> [02:38] yeah, i ran into that error too [02:39] what's wrong is that it will redownload everything [02:40] slow connection? [02:41] or dont want unwanted packages downloading> [02:43] Faqtotum: as regards SCALE conf packs, just register and wait to pay until later. [02:43] ok [02:43] Faqtotum: I'll eventually get a free pass because of Ubucon, but I registered first. [02:43] philipballew: combo [02:44] Faqtotum: as regards the Ubuntu DVD, this cycle (and maybe last too) it's just the Desktop CD + all language packs. [02:44] So you'll still need an alternate CD to upgrade, as I understand it. [02:47] grrrrr [02:47] so i burned it as dvd for nothing+ [02:48] Pretty much. Unless you're nostalgic for text debian-installer! [02:48] Now in aubergine! [02:48] i liked the old color better [02:49] unless the text installer can do an upgrade... [02:51] It can't. Although it should be able to ignore the /home directory and upgrade everything around it. But to that I say: keep good backups. [02:51] an upgrade, by definition, keeps the same package set [02:52] =o [03:07] Faqtotum: actually, the Desktop CD claims to do that, too. It seemed to work the last time I looked. [03:09] what i'm about to try is "sudo apt-cdrom add" at the "Do you want to start the upgrade?" prompt where it shows what's no longer supported and what will be removed [03:10] You have to boot into the Ubuntu CD to get the upgrade option. [03:10] ohhhh [03:10] It's worth a try if you have all your data backed up. [03:10] I tried it around alpha 3 or so, I think. It didn't seem to break everything, but I wiped and did a clean install shortly after. [03:28] well i'll reboot and try it [04:06] nhaines: no go. it repartitions, moves /home, and wipes all else [04:06] can someone please simply dcc me a copy of the cdromupgrade script from the alternate cd? [04:07] interesting that the kubuntu dvd has a similar script but the ubuntu dvd does not [04:12] Faqtotum: the "Upgrade Ubuntu xxx to 11.10" does that? Shame. :( [04:13] Faqtotum: if I can find an alternate CD image I'm more than happy to share it, but I don't think it'll work with the Desktop CD (same as DVD) at all. [04:15] the dvd has the text installer, which is what the alternate is all about [04:15] from what i can tell, that's what the script wants [04:20] Don't have one. [04:20] I'd grab a torrent. [04:20] :( [04:22] does he just need someone to download it? [04:23] preferably someone who has already downloaded it and can just grab the file [04:23] I dont mind downloading it if I need to [04:23] i spent 4 days torrenting the dvd [04:24] The alternate should go fast? [04:24] seems like a waste when all i want is one file [04:25] i guess so [04:27] Faqtotum: seems like a mirror should get you the file in just a few minutes. [04:28] a mirror of the cd contents? [04:28] where is the source repository for the cd, anyway? [04:29] where the script is tracked [04:29] Faqtotum: a US mirror, not a CD contents mirror. [04:30] shouldn't there be a bzr repository somewhere? [04:31] Faqtotum: I'll finish the torrent in about 6 minutes. [04:32] i'd rather find the bzr === DonkeyHotei is now known as Faqtotum [04:37] Can't help with that, though. :) [04:40] Faqtotum: http://ubuntuone.com/p/k4g/ [04:48] a screenshot of byobu? [04:55] haha, http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/update-manager/main/view/2253/DistUpgrade/cdromupgrade [04:56] http://ubuntuone.com/4ROHpAoRK2xt4hUl3FumKF [04:56] Faqtotum: that should do it! [05:07] looks like i also needed to download http://mirrors.200p-sf.sonic.net/mirrors/mirrors/ubuntu/dists/oneiric/main/dist-upgrader-all/current/oneiric.tar.gz [05:07] it's running [05:21] Faqtotum: good luck! [05:47] nhaines: seems the dvd doesn't have the text installer after all [05:47] debian-installer, that is [06:19] Faqtotum: that's right and I said as much earlier. :) [06:34] [Sat 2011-11-05 07:47:58 PM PDT] so i burned it as dvd for nothing+ [06:34] [Sat 2011-11-05 07:48:13 PM PDT] Pretty much. Unless you're nostalgic for text debian-installer! [06:34] [Sat 2011-11-05 07:48:21 PM PDT] Now in aubergine! [06:34] seems you said the contrary [07:13] Faqtotum: I must've been researching the alternate CD at the time and didn't switch contexts again, sorry. === ryaxnb_ is now known as ryaxnb [18:23] Dora the Explora gets sooooooooo damn old after a few hours [18:24] * MarkDude is baby sitting now. [18:29] no it doesn't [18:29] but pokemon does [18:47] Ok, now I wish Dora was on [18:48] The Backyardigans are on now. There's an animal in trouble..... [18:48] dunno that one [18:50] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxlWvE2U0nw [18:50] There it is [18:51] Wonder pets [18:56] when i was that age, most parents wanted their kids to play _outside_ [18:56] tv was "bad" [18:56] Well its raining [18:57] So much for going to beach today [18:57] it's november [20:47] pleia2: do you have a link handy to your oneiric slides? I'm giving a talk on Saturday. :) [20:50] nhaines: http://princessleia.com/presentations/ubuntu-11.10-plug.odp [20:50] or .pdf [20:59] pleia2: thanks!
